High School education is comprised of 4 years from 9 th grade until 12 th grade. The four years of High School will mirror your academic life of your university pathway whether in the U.S., Canada or globally, allowing a seamless transition to your higher education. Schools will have 4 5 mandatory subjects such as English, Math, Science & Social Studies along with 1 or 2 electives which students can choose from each semester, based on the areas of interest.

AN INTRODUCTION TO WHATCOLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS

WhatCollege Advanced Academics (AP, STEM)

AP (Advanced Placement)

American High School education is considered one of the most prestigious education in the world, in part because of the different level of classes offered within academics.

U.S. High Schools offer AP (Advanced Placement) & Honors classes in certain subjects that are much more advanced than the regular subjects. Students will need a good standing GPA to enroll in AP or Honors, as well as earn extra credits towards graduation and most importantly, earn recognition by top universities including Ivy League schools.

Let’s look at some of the sample AP courses offered at a U.S. High School:

AP Studio Art

AP Computer Science Principles

AP Computer Science A

AP Music Theory

AP English Literature

AP English Language

AP Statistics

AP Calculus AB, BC

Dual Credit

AP Biology

AP Chemistry

AP Environmental Science AP Physics

AP Psychology

AP US History

AP World History

U.S. High Schools also offer Dual Credit Courses where, in certain subjects, students are eligible to earn university credits during their High School studies. These courses are college level courses that are taught at either a college campus or high school campus.

Let’s look at some of the sample Dual Credit Courses offered at a U.S. High School:

AP US History, AP Physics, American Government, Mandarin, Spanish etc.

STEM & STEAM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics and STEAM includes Arts in the process, all provided within a High School curriculum led by accomplished school faculty with a specialization and higher level of education in this specific sector. The current century is moving fast into STEM & STEAM careers and students will be able to focus on creative engagement courses such as Computer Science, Arts, Technology, Graphic Design etc.

Other courses that enhance the program:

AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Environmental Science, AP Chemistry, Design & Technology, AP Computer Science, AP Studio Art

Other activities that enhance the program:

Robotics Club, Math & Science Bowl, Visual Arts Club

Section Two (Part II)

WhatCollege Advanced Academics (IB Diploma)

IB (International Baccalaureate)

The IB Diploma is an internationally recognized qualification that educates students to become global, critical and creative thinkers. It is a holistic, rigorous program respected by the world’s leading universities.

The curriculum includes six subject groups: languages, literature, social studies, science, mathematics and the arts. Students choose one course from each group and study three subjects at higher level and three at standard level. In addition, an independent research project, a Theory of Knowledge course and co curricular activities challenge students to apply their knowledge beyond their subject courses.

The program begins in Grade 11 and students must complete both years in order to obtain their qualification. Let’s look at sample IB courses offered with WhatCollege :

HIGHER LEVEL

Biology Economics French History Mathematics Music Physics Psychology Spanish Theatre Visual Arts World Literature

STANDARD LEVEL Biology Chemistry Economics French History Information Technology for a Global Society (ITGS) Latin Literature Mathematics Music Physics Psychology Spanish Sports Exercise Science Theatre Visual Arts World Religions

How do colleges view the International Baccalaureate Program?

Most major universities recognize the rigor and quality of IB’s approach to academics. Because IB courses are designed to develop skills as well as knowledge, colleges and universities welcome the IB student as someone who is particularly suited to the demands of the college curriculum. Colleges generally view students who complete the whole program more favorably than they do students taking isolated courses.
