Love has always been a driving force behind the most memorable songs in music While it may seem that hip-hop and R&B sit on opposite ends of the musical spectrum, these genres share a deep connection in how they explore the theme of love its highs, its lows, and its complexities

From the smooth melodies of R&B legends like Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston, and Mary J. Blige to the heartfelt storytelling of hip-hop icons like Tupac, Nas, and J Cole, love continues to be a central theme that resonates with listeners across generations Whether it’s about romantic relationships, self-love, or even the love for a community, both genres have shaped how we perceive and express affection in modern culture

R&B has long been synonymous with love and emotion The genre thrives on vulnerability, using soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics to connect with its audience Whether it's SZA singing about love’s imperfections, Usher serenading with tales of devotion, or Jazmine Sullivan exploring

the pain and passion of relationships, R&B captures the full emotional spectrum of love

In R&B, love is raw, intimate, and often deeply personal. The smooth rhythms and rich harmonies of the genre create a safe space for artists to bear their souls This openness has cemented R&B as the go-to genre for listeners seeking to feel understood in their experiences with love.

While hip-hop is often celebrated for its braggadocio and social commentary, its exploration of love is equally impactful Artists like LL Cool J, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar have given us anthems that balance swagger with sincerity Hip-hop’s love songs often take a unique approach, blending poetic lyricism with beats that carry both grit and emotion.

For many hip-hop artists, love is not just romantic it’s also about loyalty and connection Tracks like Tupac’s “Dear Mama” show love for family, while songs like JAY-Z’s “444” and Kanye West’s “Bound 2” delve into the challenges and rewards of romantic relationships

The beauty of love in hip-hop is its ability to be unapologetically real It acknowledges imperfections, celebrates vulnerability, and reminds listeners that love is multifaceted.

One of the most magical moments in music happens when hip-hop and R&B intersect. Collaborations like Method Man and Mary J Blige’s “All I Need,” Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” or the more recent Chris Brown and Drake hit “No Guidance” illustrate the seamless blending of two genres in their exploration of love.

This fusion allows artists to balance the raw energy of hip-hop with the melodic beauty of R&B, creating tracks that appeal to fans of both genres. It’s a testament to the versatility of love as a theme it can be shouted, whispered, rapped, or sung, but the message remains universal

As music continues to evolve, so does the way love is portrayed in hip-hop and R&B Today’s artists are unafraid to tackle the complexities of love, from toxic relationships to self-love and healing. They’ve shifted the narrative, showing that love isn’t always perfect, but it’s always worth exploring

Artists like Summer Walker, Giveon, and J Cole are leading the charge in redefining how love sounds in modern music. Their work speaks to a generation that values authenticity, emotional intelligence, and deeper connections

Love in hip-hop and R&B isn’t just a theme it’s the heartbeat of these genres It’s what connects artists to their fans and listeners to one another. As long as there are stories to tell and emotions to feel, love will remain a central force driving the music we love.

Whether you’re in the mood for an R&B ballad to soothe your soul or a hip-hop track to fuel your passion, one thing is clear: love is alive and thriving in these genres, and it’s here to stay

My dad introduced me to rap music, while my mom leaned more toward country and pop. Being from Michigan has influenced me in many sounds I love

ways Some of the biggest names in the industry are from here it’s a melting pot of creativity. That’s reflected in my music, which blends everything I’ve grown up on, the lessons I’ve learned, and the

10OutOf10Promos: You’ve opened for artists like Juicy J and DJ Paul What lessons have you taken from those experiences?

Sharpie J: Honestly, I take lessons from every show Working with them isn’t all that different from working with other artists, but I’ve learned a lot about engaging with the crowd both on and off stage. Observing seasoned artists interact with their audience has been incredibly insightful.

10OutOf10Promos: Can you walk us through your process of recording, mixing, and mastering your own tracks? How does being hands-on shape your music?

Sharpie J: I started at 15 with a program called Ignite, making beats and recording nothing great, but unforgettable memories. Over time, I moved to Audacity, then FL Studio, and began buying beats and watching tutorials to learn mixing. Being hands-on allows me to give my tracks a personal touch. When people hear my music, they immediately know it’s me. Whether it’s good or bad, it’s authentically me that I’m sharing with the world.

10OutOf10Promos: With over 50 tracks in your discography, which song or project do you feel defines you the most and why?

Sharpie J: That’s tough because each song and project is like a piece of the puzzle that is Sharpie J. The Dark Room was something I worked on in high school, while G Alien King came out when I was 22. They’re like chapters in my life. As of now, though, I’d say “Lil Bit Country” feels like a defining track because it represents where I am and where I’ve been.

Sharpie J: My influences include Eminem, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Johnny Cash, Metallica, Godsmack, Billy Joel, and many more. These artists inspire my songwriting, especially in how they tell stories or evoke feelings. I strive to do the same in my music.

10OutOf10Promos: Your music has been described as dynamic. What’s your approach to keeping your sound fresh and engaging?

SharpieJ: I’m always searching for something I haven’t heard before, something that resonates deeply. I think about what I’d want to hear or what I’d want my great-great-grandkids to hear 200 years from now. I aim to leave a timeless impression.

10OutOf10Promos: Do you have any rituals or routines you follow when preparing for a live performance?

Sharpie J: Definitely. I like to give myself a pep talk, maybe take a shot, hit a pen, pop in some gum, drink water, and say, “Showtime!”

10OutOf10Promos: How do you choose collaborators for your projects, like Pamela, ZigZag, and epAdemyk?

Sharpie J: Most of my collaborations come from personal connections through shows I met ZigZag and Pamela at a show at Carl’s Tavern in New Haven I thought ZigZag was a dope artist and perfect for a beat I had, and I knew Pam would kill the hook I met epAdemyk at a show as well, but he wasn’t performing Later, he took photos for one of my shows, shared his music, and we’ve been working together ever since

10OutOf10Promos: As an independent artist, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

Sharpie J: The biggest challenge is funding. As an independent artist, it’s all on me. I work

a 9-to-5 to pay my bills and fund my music I’ve learned to invest wisely, but I’ve also accepted that mistakes happen. For example, I once spent $1,200 on a buy-in for a tour that got canceled due to COVID It was a learning experience, and I made valuable connections through it.

10OutOf10Promos: What advice would you give to up-and-coming artists about managing their finances in the music industry?

Sharpie J: Invest wisely, but don’t be afraid to take risks Just make sure you’re only putting in what you’re willing to lose Sometimes things don’t pan out, but every experience is a lesson

10OutOf10Promos: What’s been the most pivotal moment in your career so far?

Sharpie J: That canceled tour I mentioned earlier Through that, I met Rich Dreamz, who helped me get on my first two tours and taught me about booking shows That experience was a turning point for me

10OutOf10Promos: Touring can be demanding. What has been your most memorable tour experience?

10OutOf10Promos: How would you describe the current music scene in Michigan, and where do you see it heading?

Sharpie J: It’s growing Where I’m from, there hasn’t been much of a music scene, and I’m working to change that My hope is for better opportunities for local artists to be heard

10OutOf10Promos: Are there any local artists in Michigan you’re excited about collaborating with?

The music industry is undergoing a seismic shift, fueled by the rise of artificial intelligence (Al) tools that are revolutionizing how songs are written, produced, and remixed Al-powered applications like Suno Al Music Maker, Audimee, and others are providing groundbreaking tools for musicians and producers, enabling creativity and efficiency like never before. But as with any disruptive technology, this innovation comes with its share of controversies and ethical dilemmas

The Pros of AI in Music Production

Speed And Efficiency

One of the most compelling advantages of Al in music is its ability to save time Legendary producer Timbaland recently demonstrated this when he used Suno Al to remix one of his hit songs effortlessly. He laughed while recounting how he didn't need to return to the studio or spend hours thinking through new ideas-the remix came together seamlessly in minutes For busy artists, Al tools are a game-changer, allowing them to focus on creativity rather than logistics.

Speed And Efficiency

For music producers, creating unique samples has always been a cornerstone of originality. Al tools like Audimee offer unparalleled capabilities for generating bespoke sounds, enabling producers to craft unique sonic palettes without relying on overused sample packs

Additionally, Al is proving to be a powerful ally for songwriters who may not feel confident in their vocal abilities With Algenerated vocals, creators can bring their lyrics to life, experiment with different styles, and even emulate specific vocal tones, all without stepping into a recording booth. This democratizes music production, empowering more people to bring their ideas to fruition

Innovation and Accountability

Al is leveling the playing field for independent musicians Tools like Suno Al allow anyone with a laptop or smartphone to access capabilities that were once reserved for high-budget studios From generating chord progressions to mastering tracks, these apps make it easier than ever to produce professional-quality music on a budget.

Job Displacement

Another concern is the potential loss of jobs within the music industry Session musicians, vocalists, and even producers may find their roles diminishing as Al becomes more capable of handling tasks traditionally performed by humans

The Cons of AI in Music Production

Ethical Concerns and Resistance from Artists

Not everyone is embracing the Al revolution

Some producers and artists argue that Al diminishes the human element in music, reducing the art form to an algorithmic process They worry that the soul of music- a deeply human expression of emotion and experience-may be lost when machines take over creative tasks

These concerns have sparked heated debates about the role of technology in art. Critics point out that while Al can mimic human creativity, it cannot replicate the depth and authenticity that comes from lived experience

Impact On The Music Industry

Al's ability to generate music also raises questions about intellectual property and copyright For instance, Universal Music Group (UMG) has been embroiled in lawsuits against Al companies, accusing them of training models on copyrighted material without permission. These legal battles highlight the murky waters of Al- generated music and its potential to disrupt traditional business models

Strilingual A Balance

Despite these challenges, many artists are finding ways to incorporate Al as a tool rather than a replacement. The key lies in using Al to enhance creativity rather than replace it For example, a producer might use Al to generate a starting point for a track but still rely on their expertise to refine and personalize the final product.

As Timbaland's experience shows, Al can simplify certain aspects of music production, freeing up time for artists to focus on what truly matters: connecting with their audience. At the same time, it's crucial to address ethical and legal concerns to ensure that this technology benefits everyone involved in the music-making process

The Future Of AI In Music

Al is here to stay, and its impact on the music industry is only just beginning While it may never fully replace human creativity, it is undeniably reshaping how music is made, distributed, and consumed Whether you see Al as a threat or an opportunity, one thing is clear: the music industry will never be the same

As we navigate this new era, the challenge will be finding a balance that honors the artistry of music while embracing the possibilities of technology For producers, songwriters, and fans alike, the future of music promises to be as exciting as it is unpredictable

HOTEP AND BLESSINGS TO EVERYONE

As we know the proverbial "28 DAYS" to acknowledge "Black History" has crept back upon us with renewed vigor and the same stories retold over and over again.

Now mind you as a young Asiatic king in school back when, world history class was where black history was taught. And of course, Alex Hailey's "ROOTS" movie series dominated ABC at the end of the 70s into the 1980s on television.

Dr. King, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglas, Mary Bethune, Madame C.J Walker, etc......all came across the lesson plans of homework and class projects. The ones they kept from the school curriculum were Mansa Musa, Tarik Taharka, Ghenghis Khan, Moors of Spain, Morocco, and America, Nat Turner, (Briefly about Denmark Vessey) and a whole medley of other prominent Asiatic Kings, Queens, Scholars, Leaders, Warriors and Soldiers.

PHARAOH FACTOR

As great as these accomplishments are, the darkside is that "RACISM" still exists and it is more economical (as was "chattel slavery"). The social climate of today is not accepting outright public displays of raw savage racism. It's covered or shall I say "veiled" in American society.

Whereas in other countries its open as the grand canyon and unless you are of some societal financial status, you are forced to bow to whatever form of prejudice/racism given out.

Such sad and disgraceful thinking and yet.....this Egotistical thinking has innocent peoples slaughtered in the auspices of WAR all around the globe.

STOPRACISMWORLDWIDE=FREEPALESTINE #STOPTHEKILLINGOFINNOCENTPEOPLES

It's cool as a child to learn about forerunners and pioneers etc....that paved the way for alot things we as Asiatic peoples in this country and the world have access to, that just 70 something years ago, it wasn't even thought of and now different cultures and ethnicities are in unity in all areas of civilization.

I was in the Belly of the Beast when I actually learned that ROME had Black Emperors (Black Ceasars) "Septimus Severius" was a full blooded African Emperor of Rome, and the role Denzel Washington portrays in Gladiator 2 is a Roman Emperor "Macrinus" who was born in the Roman outpost town in modern day Algiers (Northern Africa).

We must fully overstand that in today's generation of technology and lack of proper attention (span), not many people read

El Martello: Introduce yourself to our readers Where are you originally from, and what led you to pursue a career in the music business? How did you get your start DJing?

DJ Roots Queen: I’m DJ Roots Queen, originally from Tampa, Florida, and now based in Atlanta My journey into DJing began as a way to cope with losing my dad in a car accident when I was a teenager Music became my outlet and my way of healing I started playing at underground warehouse raves in Tampa, where I developed my skills and fell in love with the art of DJing. It was there that I realized how much power music has to connect people and create unforgettable moments.

El Martello: What are the pros of being a female DJ in a male-dominated field?

DJ Roots Queen: One of the biggest pros is that I get to bring a unique perspective and energy to the table Being a female DJ sets me apart and allows me to stand out in a way that challenges the norms I’ve also

been able to inspire other women to break into this space, which is incredibly fulfilling.

El Martello: If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self when you decided to become a DJ?

DJ Roots Queen: I’d tell myself to never second-guess your purpose The path won’t always be easy, but your passion and hard work will get you through Focus on staying authentic and trust that the right opportunities will come as long as you stay consistent

Welcome to 10 Out Of 10 Magazine, where we dive deep into the stories shaping today’s culture Today, we’re thrilled to sit down with Frank Mahindaratne, the author of Lives of Wolves, a thrilling exploration of power, survival, and the high-stakes world of “The Network” From its gritty origins to its cinematic evolution, Lives of Wolves promises to pull readers into a realm where danger lurks behind every decision, and truth hides in plain sight. Frank shares the inspiration behind his novel, the challenges of writing in intense genres, and what’s next in his storytelling journey Let’s step into “The Network” and uncover what makes this story so compelling.

10OutOf10Promos: Lives of Wolves takes readers into "The Network," a world of power and danger What inspired this setting, and how did you develop its unique atmosphere?

Frank Mahindaratne: The Network has been years in the making, evolving through different names, but its foundation has rules, and loyalty is the ultimate test.

always been tied to the character Stacks and his empire. The final name came from a track by my friend, N.A. Tre who actually plays Stacks in the independent film of the same name. His song, The Network featuring Hotboy Willay, cemented the vision and

solidified the name for Stacks’ unique and powerful organization

What sets The Network apart is its reach it’s not just street hustlers, but a full-spectrum empire that pulls in corporate elites, doctors, lawyers, even cops and judges Whether you're a Member or an Associate, you're granted privileges the average person could never touch Developing this world meant blending the grit of the streets with the calculated precision of corporate power, creating an atmosphere where influence

10OutOf10Promos: The tagline says, "Feel the danger. Hear the truth." What truths do you hope readers take away from the novel?

Frank Mahindaratne: In my writing, I aim to weave layers of truth within the harsh realities of life. At the core, everything comes down to choices whether it's small daily decisions or life-altering ones that can lead us down unexpected paths. Every choice carries consequences, and sometimes they hit harder than we ever imagined.

Lives of Wolves explores this in a raw, unfiltered way. Through characters like Malik and Junior, we see how even the smallest choices can ripple into something much bigger sometimes too big to control. A bad decision can spiral into danger, while a good one can be the light that pulls you out.

10 OUT OF 10 MAGAZINE

Ultimately, I hope readers walk away with a deeper awareness of their own choices and their ripple effect If they choose to make more good ones than bad, I’ve done my job

10OutOf10Promos: The concept of power being everything and escape being impossible sounds intense How do the characters navigate this high-stakes environment?

Frank Mahindaratne: I wouldn’t say escape is impossible it always comes down to choices But power? Power is everything It gives people the ability to make moves that those without it can only dream of, right? But like anything in life, where there’s a blessing, there’s a curse. Power can open doors, but it can also trap you in places you never wanted to be.

In Lives of Wolves, you'll see how power plays out on both sides of the spectrum. The powerful aren’t always untouchable, and the powerless aren’t always as weak as they seem. Remember David and Goliath? Sometimes it’s not about strength. It’s about strategy. This story dives deep into the minds of both, showing how they navigate a world where survival means constantly making the next move before someone makes it for you.

10OutOf10Promos: Is there a particular character in Lives of Wolves that you relate to the most? If so, why?

Frank Mahindaratne: I could give the cliché answer and say I relate to one of the cool characters Malik, Stacks, Gates, Tommy, Dreads, Tee because truthfully, there’s a little bit of me in all of them I think every writer leaves pieces of themselves scattered across their characters But if I had to choose the one I relate to the most the one I have the most in common with, and the one that was easiest to write it would be Junior His struggles hit closer to

home than the others, and writing him felt like second nature

Why? I guess you’ll just have to read it and get to know me if you don’t already

10OutOf10Promos: Without giving too much away, what’s the biggest twist or moment in the story that you’re excited for readers to experience?

Frank Mahindaratne: Oh man I don’t know if I can answer this without giving too much away, but let’s just say I draw a lot from the way people hurt each other sometimes intentionally, sometimes without even realizing it In Lives of Wolves, the people you think have it all figured out whether they’re the culprits or the victims might not be what they seem. And sometimes, the ones who get hurt the most are the ones who least deserve it.

Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, that’s when it hits the hardest.

10OutOf10Promos: What was the most challenging part of writing Lives of Wolves?

Frank Mahindaratne: The biggest challenge was staying true to the rawness of the story When you’re writing something that explores power, danger, and survival, it’s tempting to soften the edges or gloss over some of the harsher realities But I wanted to write a story that was authentic and unfiltered, something that didn’t shy away from the hard truths of life

Another challenge was weaving all the character arcs together seamlessly Each character has their own story, struggles, and motivations, but they all exist within this interconnected world Making sure their journeys felt real and balanced while keeping the pace of the novel exciting was no small task.

10OutOf10Promos: Lives of Wolves is being released in multiple formats digital, audiobook, and print-on-demand What excites you most about reaching readers in these different ways?

10 OUT OF 10 MAGAZINE

Frank Mahindaratne: I love that each format has its own way of bringing the story to life. With digital, it’s all about accessibility you can dive into the book anytime, anywhere. The print version gives you something tangible, something you can hold, which feels more personal and permanent The audiobook, though that’s something special Hearing the characters’ voices and the intensity of the scenes brought to life is a whole different experience It adds an emotional layer that you don’t always get from reading alone I’m excited to see how readers connect with Lives of Wolves in their preferred format

10OutOf10Promos: How did the independent film adaptation of Lives of Wolves influence your writing process for the novel?

Frank Mahindaratne: The film brought a lot of clarity and depth to the story. Seeing the characters and their world come to life on screen made me think about them in new ways. It gave me a chance to dive deeper into their backstories and motivations, which added layers to the novel that might not have been there otherwise. It also pushed me to up my game in terms of pacing and dialogue. Writing for the screen requires you to be sharp and concise, and I tried to bring that same energy to the book. The synergy between the two formats has been incredible it’s like they fuel each other.

10OutOf10Promos: For aspiring writers looking to tackle complex stories like Lives of Wolves, what advice would you give them?

Frank Mahindaratne: First and foremost, write what feels real to you Don’t worry about whether your story is going to fit into a specific genre or whether it’s what people expect Authenticity resonates with readers Second, don’t rush the process Complex stories take time to build Let your characters and world develop naturally, and don’t be

afraid to revise until it feels right. Lastly, stay open to feedback but trust your instincts Writing is a deeply personal journey, and while feedback is valuable, you’re the one who knows your story best. Stay true to your vision, and the rest will follow

10OutOf10Promos: What’s next for you after Lives of Wolves? Can we expect a sequel or new projects on the horizon?

Frank Mahindaratne: I definitely have more stories to tell within the world of Lives of Wolves There’s so much depth to The Network and its characters that I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface A sequel is definitely on the table

Beyond that, I’ve got a few other projects in the works some tied to this universe, others that venture into new territory I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself as a writer and storyteller, so stay tuned

10OutOf10Promos: Finally, where can readers find Lives of Wolves and keep up with your work?

Frank Mahindaratne: Lives of Wolves will be available on Amazon in February in digital, audiobook, and print-on-demand formats To stay updated on my latest projects and releases, readers can follow me on social media or check out my website I’m always excited to connect with readers and hear their thoughts on the book!

10OutOf10Promos: Thank you for sitting down with us, Frank. We can’t wait for readers to experience Lives of Wolves and step into the gripping world you’ve created.

Frank Mahindaratne: Thank you for having me! It’s been a pleasure, and I’m looking forward to seeing how readers connect with the story.
