Introduction My Name is Chai Wei Sheng and my portfolio is an analysis of Wa Shan Guest House that I have done as a student for the past 3 months. all of the slides shows my understanding toward design principle that have evovled over the course of the program

-Point & Line -Plane & Volume

-Form & Organization -Ordering Principle -Quality of Space and Circulation

01

Analyzing Design The Following Slide show my first impressiong of Wa Shan Guest House and Wang Shu. The slide contain the detail information of Wang Shu & Wa Shan Guest House. For instance it contain the overall information of Wang Shu, location of Wa Shan Guest House, The Main idea of the building, the material used, the issue that tackled, the interesting feature and my understanding of architecture after this project.

Wang Shu He is from China. Pritzker Architecture Prize. Founder of Amateur Architecture Studio. Focuses on designing buildings and urban spaces that foster community and work from the bottom up. Basic Belief of the Studio Don’t believe in large scale of architecture.

Wa Shan Guest House The foot of elephant mountain at Zhuangtang, Hangzhou, China Supplementary facility of living accommodation

The Main Idea

To combine modern and traditional methods and style. Exists solely in relation with its surrounding Principle of (Shan Shui) into his architecture. Tribute to the vanished culture.

Issue that tackled Wa Shan Guest house Lacks of accommodation The sustainable of materials The confusing route in the building The facilities of the disable The use of methods

Materials used Concrete Stone Wood Adobe Bamboo The Remains of demolished building Bricks , roof tiles , Wine jar

Interesting Feature The confusing route Some small obstacles The first idea of the project The route on the roof

The combination of traditional and modern methods. A large number of covered terraces. The overall experience The self-supporting roof.

My understanding of architecture Understanding of the environment Understand materials Architecture is a combination of art and philosophy . Factors and aspect “This is not a jobs for people . This should be the work of GOD . Said Wang Shu .

Points & Line

The following abstract show my understanding of points and line. Based on my undertanding a point marks a position in space. It has no length, width, or depth, and is therefore static, centralized, and directionless. A point extended becomes a line. Conceptually, a line has length, but no width or depth. Whereas a point is by nature static, a line, in describing the path of a point in motion, is capable of visually expressing direction, movement, and growth.

Abstract The White space represent Nature. The circle represent courtyard and the rectangle represent screen like walls. The walls were built using concrete and have adobe as construction camouflage, this prove that Wang Shu wanted the walls to represent nature.

03

Plane & Volume The following slide show my understanding of plane and volume. Based on my understanding, plane and line extended in a direction other than its intrinsic direction. Planes in architecture define three-dimensional volumes of mass and space. The spatial relationship of planes determine the visual attributes of the form they define and the qualities of the space they enclose. A plane extended in a direction other than its intrinsic direction becomes a volume. Conceptually, a volume has three dimensions: length, width, and depth.

Base Plane Uncommon Shaped to suit the riverbank

Parallel Plane Strong Direction Quality Extrovert Generate Dynamic Movement

Overhead Plane

Specially Design to allow natural light into the building

Depressed Plane Reinforce the identity and independenca of the sunken field Weaken its visual relationship with the surrounding Space Introvert Space

Four Plane/ Closure Strongest type of spatial defination Introverted Promote the center space

U-Shaped Plane

Elevated Plane

Widen Visual EXtrovert space

Main Idea Exist SOlely in relation with the mountain and the river and not an obstacle between them Merge with the environment and nature

04

Form & Organization The following slide show my understanding of Form and Organization. Based on my understanding, the primary organzation of Wa Shan Guest House is linear. For the spatial relationship of Wa Shan Guest House consists of adjacent space, space within a space and space linked in a comman space. For form grouping, Wa Shan Guest House consists of spatial tension, face to face contact.

Shape of Wa Shan Guest House Square + Triangle Shapes

Primary Solid

Stretch in length

DImensional Tranformation OF WA SHEN GUEST HOUSE

Stretch in width

Subtractive Tranformation OF WA SHEN GUEST HOUSE

Subtract the exterior of the building to be irregular Subtract some space in the building to create voids

Additive Tranformation OF WA SHEN GUEST HOUSE

Entrance

Add a space to create a space as a reception counter

Linear Organization Entrance

Organization

Adjacent Space

Spatial Relationship

Allow each space to be clearly defined Reinforced the inviduality of each space

Space Within a Space

Spatial Relationship

All of the structure are built individualy under the same roof The outline of the building create a space that enveloped all the structure

Space linked by a comman space Restaurant the space that linked the two space is a gathering space

Spatial Relationship

Face-to-Face Contact The Screen like plane and the structure are having Face to Face Contact

05

Ordering Principle The following slide show my understanding of Ordering Principle. Based on my understanding, the ordering principle that occur in Wa Shan Guest House is hierarchy, repetion / rhythm and datum. And at the end of the slide there is an abstract that shows all the three ordering principle.

HIERARCHY Hierarchy by Size Placement Planar Level

Pool

Courtyard

REPETITION / RHYTHM The Planes and and Structure were repetition of rectangle structure

Datum Have sufficient Size Closure Rgularity Continuety Can gather the element within its field

ABSTRACT

The series of square on the outside shown repetition and also forme a rhythm that show circulation. The figure in the middle show hierarchy by placement, shape and size. The entire paper shows datum as it organize, embrace and gather together the abstract within its field.

06

Quality of Space and Circulation The following slide show my understanding of quality of space and circulation. The following slide shows opening, view, light, approuch, entrance, configuration of path, space relationship and form of circulation space of Wa Shan Guest House.

Opening Within Planes Create a degree of visual tention between them. Multiple openings are clustered to form a unified composition within a plane.

Qualities of Spaces

-

Degree of Enclosure

Opening at Corners Provide natural light and create a new view Visually erodes the edges of the plane .

Qualities of Spaces Degree of Enclosure

Opening Between Planes Reinforces the horizontal layering of a space Create a extrovert space

Qualities of Spaces Degree of Enclosure

View Provide an amazing view and establish a visual relationship between the space and its surrounding. The people inside the space are probably attracted by the view which help Wang Shu to achieve his main idea. Qualities of Spaces

Light

One of the Main source of light of the building is from the opening at the side of the building. Most of the building's side are formed by balcony, the all of the balcony have opening as the diagram above. Qualities of Spaces

Light

The Second Main Light source of Wa Shan Guest house are the opening that serve as skylights. These Opening ensure the quality of light inside of the building Qualities of Spaces

Approch Oblique

There is no path that provide a direct route to the main entrance of the building Enhances the effect of the perspective on the front facade and the form of the building

Entrance Projected Forms a transitional space Provide overhead shelter Has a meaning of Welcome and it is widely used by hotels

Circulation

Configuration Of The Path Composite of Network and Linear

Circulation

All path are linear There are paths that connect established points in the building There route are built based on maze, to temp people to explore more about the building

Path – space relationship Pass through spaces

There are certain spaces that you have to pass through to get to other places

Path – space relationship Pass by spaces The integrity of each space is maintained These linear route pass by various space

Form of the circulation space

Open on One Side As mention, most of the side of the building are formed by balcony, and balcony is clearly open on one side, so i would only show the interior of the building that shows open on one side in this slide..

Form of the circulation space Open on Both Side There are path that form a colonnaded passageway that becomes a physical extension of the space it passes through.

Spiral Stair

U-shaped Stair
