Rover Rescue Keeping Your Dog Safe and HOME! by Lauren Kehoe

Having a dog run away is one of the most terrifying experiences for any pet owner. The world is a huge, dangerous place, and we all want our four-legged friends to be safe at home where they belong. Even the most careful pet parents can fall victim to a runaway pup. Fortunately, there are many steps we can take to help prevent dogs from escaping, and safety measures to take advantage of in the event of a dog running away. Prevention is the most important way to keep a pup safe. If a dog never gets away in the first place, he will never need to be found. Using high quality, secure leashes and collars are a good first step. No-slip collars such as martingales will tighten to a certain point then stop. They are a good mix between regular collars and choke collars, one reason being that it is difficult for a dog to slip or wriggle its way out of in a fit of nerves or excitement.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Flimsy thin leashes that are fraying away run the risk of breaking or being chewed through. Cable or wire leashes are good options for pups that like to bite on their leash. It may be tempting to let a dog off leash, but unless they have excellent recall there is the risk of becoming distracted and taking off. For a dog that may not be ready for off leash just yet, or if traveling through a busy overstimulating area, long line leashes can be a great in between. They allow a dog to burn off extra energy while staying connected to their owners. Fences are another excellent tool for keeping dogs contained. Tie outs and invisible fences cannot compete with a physical fence. Some dogs may be okay with a four-foot-high chain link fence, but many dogs can easily chew, dig, or jump their way out of such an enclosure. Solid materials like brick or wood offer greater security. Fences that are six feet high or taller help protect agile jumpers. Placing some of the fencing underground or lining it with bricks or cement combats the diggers. The less time a dog is left alone in a yard, then less time to become bored and create an escape route. Accidents happen, and if a dog does get away there are safety measures that will increase the chances of return to owner. Wearing a collar with a phone number or address on it will help identify a dog. Nearly all rescues and shelters microchip every animal they adopt out, adopters just need to follow through with updating their information with the microchip company. If not already microchipped, it is a quick and affordable option at any vet. If a found dog does not have identifying tags, any shelter or vet office can scan for a microchip. For dogs that are shy and a flight risk or working dogs that may run long distances, companies sell GPS collars where a dog’s location can be tracked in real time. The internet and social media have made posters on telephone poles a thing of the past. Posting a photo with your contact info and the missing dog’s name is a great way to spread its face. The more shares the post generates, the more chances of the right people seeing the post. This works both ways, as someone may find a dog and create a post asking if anyone knows the owner. There are even groups on social media dedicated specifically to lost pets. We live in an era where there are so many ways to reunite pets and owners, it just takes a bit of teamwork.

The Power of Positive Thinking Beauty Hacks Using Green Tea by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

Green tea is touted as one of the healthiest beverages on the planet. It is loaded with antioxidants and healthy benefits, but I bet you never thought it would also hold so many benefits for beauty. The health benefits abound with lowering the risk for heart disease, weight loss, protecting against cancer, and improving brain function. The benefits don’t stop there though. The bioactive compounds found in green tea help with reduction in inflammation. The green tea substances can reduce the body’s free radicals. There is one little secret ingredient called tannin that will have you not throwing away your tea bag once you’ve drank it. Tannin is an antibacterial agent which stops the growth of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. When you drink green tea, it helps guard you against illnesses and protects your skin at the same time. So, the next time you drink green tea save the tea bag!

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742

Got acne? Treat your skin with the left-over tea bag. Place the tea bag on that pesky pimple. The tannin and other compounds like zinc will help to cleanse the skin and heal it. Another effective compound is catechin ECGC, this is the compound highly effective in reducing inflammation. This can help to reduce acne scarring of the skin too. Other skin problems such as bug bites and sunburn? No problem. You can remove the tea from the tea bag and apply to the skin directly or add it to an ice cube tray with water. Once frozen, the ice cube can be used to soothe the burnt skin or a bug bite. Perhaps you just want to rejuvenate your skin with a green tea facial. A little green tea, brown sugar, and honey mixed together makes for a great facial remedy. Rub this mixture on to your skin and then rinse off. Green tea also helps to reduce puffy eyes. Use cold tea bags, rung out, and place over your eyes to reduce puffiness. The cold will constrict the blood vessels helping to reduce swelling. If you have eye irritations, you can use warm tea bags to soothe. The bottom line, green tea has so many health benefits as well as beauty benefits. You may want to consider adding green tea into your daily routine. Green tea helps you feel better, lose weight, be acne free, and lower your risk for chronic illness. With these types of benefits, why would anyone want to miss a day! In health and wellness, Allison

Students of 08742 Ocean Road Elementary School Receives Grant and Hosts Artist Residency to Unveil New Mural by Madelyn Killi

On May 21st, 2021, Ocean Road Elementary School (ORS) had its annual “No Child Left Inside” Day celebration, where all of the students spend their school day outside participating in engaging and fun-filled activities. Alongside events such as a bubble show, writing positive affirmations in sidewalk chalk, and learning yoga with mindfulness practitioner Sarah Stevenson, ORS also unveiled their new mural. Above the school’s garden area by the playground, the mural serves as a reminder to the students, staff, and community to “Be You!”, and also boosts lasting messages such as “Be Brave”, “Be Creative”, “Be Happy”, “Be Thankful”, and “Be Kind”. This mural was made possible by Artists in Education Residency Grant Program (AIE), as well as the ORS staff and students side-by-side with a guest artist.

The AIE, who awarded this grant to the school, also gave out eleven other grants to different schools in the New Jersey-Eastern Pennsylvania area. It’s goal is to spread appreciation and increase public interest in art, and has partnerships with local art centers such as Appel Farm Arts & Music Campus, Count Basie Center for the Arts, and Morris Arts. The AIE provided our ORS students with a hands-on learning experience with Ms. Sclavi; Mrs. Savage feels very fortunate for this residency and says that it has been one of the most phenomenal learning experiences that could’ve been provided to her students. “One of the biggest benefits of this residency was not only the experience of my students and myself learning specific mural-art making techniques from a professional teaching artist, but also observing Kate’s strategies on how to teach these techniques, and getting to witness my students’ interactions with her,” she says. “As an art educator our opportunities for observing other artist educators are infrequent and oftentimes not geared towards our particular grade levels or student population. Kate felt like a great fit right from the beginning and I thoroughly enjoyed observing her teaching and problem solving with the students.”

Kate-Marie Sclavi, a Brooklyn-based artist, worked with ORS’ art teacher Mrs. Kerri Savage and her students for 20 days to create this mural. “It truly is a legacy piece in that everyone who participated will be able to view the artwork outside the school—even just by driving by—for many years to come,” Mrs. Savage says. “While I was able to observe the impact of this residency on those who were directly involved with the process, it is my hope that everyone who engages with our Be You! mural will benefit equally as well.”

The project has brought joy, hope, and beauty to the school and its surrounding community; the students and staff enjoyed ORS art teacher, Kerri Savage (r), and artist Kate-Marie Sclavi pose for a photo every minute working and “It has been a tremendously in front of the recently completed mural. collaborating with Ms. Sclavi to fulfilling experience to see all the finish the mural, according to pieces of our vision come together in such a beautiful way,” says ORS principal, Mrs. Sheila Buck. “We are grateful for the support Mrs. Kendall, a special education teacher at ORS who played of the Artists in Education Residency Grant Program of the NJ an integral role in writing the grant, as well as acted as a teacher State Council on the Arts and Young Audiences Arts for Learnliaison for the mural project and oversaw the renovation of the ing NJ, the Ocean Road School PTO, the Point Pleasant School school’s garden. “After a difficult year, this residency was like a District, Woodhaven Lumber, as well as artist support from the breath of fresh air that we all needed. The students, staff, and Windswept Motel to make this project possible,” says Mrs. Buck. community truly embraced this opportunity and the outcome was “We are excited to share the children’s amazing artwork with the stunning. Our Be You! mural will enrich our school community for community!” years to come.”

BackBook to Earth The Report It’s Always Sunny by Natalie Berko

Most people know sunscreen is a summer essential, but how many folks know what to look for. According to a research study at Northwestern University Feinerg School of Medicine, only 43% of people know the definition of SPF. SPF stands for “Sun-Protection-Factor’. “People think that SPF equals everything,” says Dr. Roopal Kindu a dermatologist at Northwestern. It does count for a lot, the “sun-protection-factor” measures a sunscreen’s ability to filter UVB rays which are related to sunburn and skin cancer. SPF however only measures UVB rays which don’t tell you anything about protection from UVA rays. Perhaps the most misunderstood factor in sunscreen is UVA. UVA is around every day and can even penetrate through window glass! UVA rays like UVB is also related to an increased risk of skin cancer, unlike UVB it is not filtered by the ozone at all. UVA doesn’t cause sunburn, but it can lead to skin darkening and aging, because it penetrates deeper into the skin it has more influence on collagen. When shopping for a sunscreen it is important to look for a bottle that says “broad spectrum” because there is no other metric on the bottle for UVA coverage. Zinc Oxide is a natural sunscreen alternative that physically instead of chemically blocks rays, and is gaining popularity as consumers seek more natural beauty products. Zinc oxide protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Dr. Andrew Weil for Origin’s makes a great natural sunscreen “Mega Defense SPF 45” formulated with Opuntia Ficus-Indica a desert cactus that helps shield against harmful UVA/UVB rays. It is one of the first 100% non-chemical sunscreens introduced to the market.

proper care is important when having fun in the sun, recent stats show one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Knowing what Natalie Berko Certified to look for and when to apply will help Crystal Healer your skin stay happy and healthy! For sunscreen to work as advertised, you should use about a shot glass worth for exposed areas. Typical adults should look got a water resistant, broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, and reapply every two hours for the best protection. In addition to sunscreen use dermatologist also recommend taking these skin saving tips: • Seek shade: The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 2 pm. If your shadow is shorter than you, it’s time to seek some shade! • Wear protective clothing: Cover-ups, beach pants, widebrimmed hats and sunglasses will keep you fashionable and provide some cover from the sun. • Use extra caution: When near water, snow and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn, so remember to reapply often.

SPF numbers are another confusing factor when it comes to picking out the right sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief SPF 15 is not half as effective as an SPF 30. An SPF of 30 means that technically you could be out in the sun 30 times longer before you get sunburned than you would be able to if you went out without any protection. SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 filters about 98% of UVB rays. Meaning despite the jump in SPF number the UVB filtering improvement is only a 1% improvement. Sunscreen and
