ANZAC DAY By Sinta Baker SRB Why does a country on this particular day, stop and think of all the soldiers that went to war? Becauseof all the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who volunteered to go and fight in the 1st world war. They went to fight for our country’s freedom, and without the remarkably distinctive courage that was shown by each and every soldier stepping off the ships at Gallipoli, Australia wouldn’t be the democracy it is today. That is why we remember them. Today is the day that we honor them and mark the 97th anniversary of the landing in Gallipoli in 1915. I, as well as other students including our school leaders from Ocean Grove Primary School proudly represented our school by taking part in the march and by laying down a wreath of native flowers around the war memorial. Anzac Day is the day to remember all the soldiers who died in World War 1 and not only them, but also all our soldiers in the subsequent wars. I found it very moving that so many people from different age groups were there to show their respect and listen to all the speechesto form a better understanding of why we stop and think of those who went to war and fought for us. By being involved in this special ceremony, I have been able to increasemy understanding of what families really felt and were going through when their loved ones made the decision to go to war. I have also learnt that it doesn’t take long to remember them, but it took 5 long years to end it, and that we owe an immense gratitude to all those who took part and to those who gave their lives.
