I N T R O D U C T I O N

The process of fundamental change in one's personality, involving the dissolution and replacement of everyday ego and consciousness. The word was created to indicate a spontaneous attempt of the psyche to heal itself of unbearable inner conflict by melting down and being reborn in a more adaptive way. It is considered that psychotic breakdown could be understood as an existential crisis that is occurring as an attempt of self reparation.

The abandonment of the scripted , false self for a more open one. A process marked by a mixture of intensity, despair, depression, self surrender and encounter with inner-self.

PHASE 1: NARRATIVE TUTOR: MS HANIM

Pasar Karat is a flea market, it is located at Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur. The market is known for selling cheap antique, vintage or preloved treasures, however, no one knows where those items came from and how those venders got it. It has always been a mystery, and that attracted more people to visit over the years.

While doing my research on this place, I came across a photographer's blog where he shared his experience while he was visiting Pasar Karat. He heard a story from his teacher that there was a young photographer who was murdered because he disrespected the people there.

It was only this blog that shared this story and there was no evidence about this case. Maybe the photographer said something that disrespected them, or he was robbed and was killed on the spot; maybe he was involved with gangs…

We would never know what the truth is.

However, human can see, observe, and watch, as long as we have the ability to do so. We scan million things a day with our eyes. We learn how to look at different angles or perspectives to conclude our own judgements. Each and everyone differ from one and another.

From the very beginning, we have plentiful of questions in every chapter of our lives. When I visited Pasar Karat, these are my questions: "why are these people here?", "why are they working so hard even when it's pouring rain or when the sun is burning the floors?", "who are they working for?", "what are their purpose here?", etc.

They all have the same dream, same goal... All they wanted is to have a easy happy life, where they don't have to worry about not having food on the table or not able to find a proper job or not capable in paying medical bills for their love ones, etc.

After answering those questions, naturally we come to analysed our assumptions about Pasar Karat and the people around there. We could be right or wrong, but no one will know better than them knowing their own story.

Moving on from assumptions, let's talk about expectations.

We learn to expect how things should be in the presents or in the future. For example, after knowing Pasar Karat is located in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, we expect Pasar Karat is a place is a middle class market where many tourist roam around and taking Instagram pictures. But that is just an expectation.

In order to meet our expectations, we come out with a plan or gather information to identify the problems, etc. To help, to rebuild, to enhance, to beautify Pasar Karat.
