The past is always pleasant to cherish, however, it is also accompanied by melancholy. Portfolio is a combination of past experience. Knowing our past could prevent us from making the same mistakes, and define future directions.

The title "I know there's a black hole behind me" stands for my acceptance of regret and sadness, and I'm ready to move forward.

ABO UT ME

I am Jimmy Jian. I was born in Thailand to a Thai mother and a Taiwanese father, but spent most of my childhood in China. Though my parents spent much money on my tuition in international school, I've never concentrated on study but hobby. There is a saying in China that goes, "Only to be a scholar is being the best of all." Rebellious as I was, I spent a lot of time participating in art and dance classes in order to oppose to this traditional Asian values. I was really passionate about both of them and diligently practicing my painting skills day after day. It seemed that study was the last thing in the world I would like to do.

Fortunately, I was encouraged by many teachers that I am talented in art, thus I kept putting my heart and soul into it. In addition, I even got into an art studio and a dance company which cultivated artists or athletes in young age. I won a lot of awards in painting competitions as well as dancing competitions. However, just when I was contented and inwardly decided to become an artist in the future, the God made a great joke on me——My father decided to move home to Taiwan. Suddenly I lost everything, my art studio, dance company, and a heart filled with hopes and dreams.

After I came back to Taiwan, I turned into a body without a soul, a thing without thought. Just as purposeless life goes to sea and sails but has no compass. I was leading a befuddled life for three years. It took me a long time to realize that I must retrieve art in any case. Finally, I began painting again right before the high school entrance exam, and got into Yingge Vocational High School, Department of Arts and Crafts. After back into the arms of painting, I received assistance by lots of wonderful mentors, I gradually built up my confidence and determined to change myself.

Therefore, I started to study very hard. I spent most of time in library, putting a lot of effort on every subjects and art works. As heaven never ignores sincere seekers, my graduation project won the first prize, and I also graduated with the first place honor from the department.

In my years of studying in collage, I widely dipped into different design fields, including product design, graphic design, editorial design, interaction design, user experience design, etc. I’m especially interested in material processes and manufacturing. I hope that in the future, I can establish my own studio, use unique material and method to develop products. In addition to set up a new brand, I will diligently contribute to society, try to make world a better place by using the force of design.

I am a Taiwanese product design student. I was born in Thailand but spent most of my childhood in China and Taiwan. I have been learning art since I was six. I met design when I was sixteen and knew for certain that this is the thing I want to do for my future. My main focus is on product design, but I also works extensively on graphic design, interaction design and art.

Ceramic art has existed for thousands of years. How can we push the boundaries of ceramic design by implementing contemporary technologies?

Material Exploration

We used thinking through making process to develop our project. Before we decide on the topic, we tried a lot of different materials and combinations, such as silicone, plaster, epoxy, glass, etc. We also apply different subjects, such as seasons, emotions, to assist in the concept development.

Form Exploration

I'm responsible for the main art direction and the manufacturing part of this project, while my partner focuses on the modeling part. So, before my partner start doing the parametric modeling, I sketch a lot of small shapes and patterns, to help him with the next stage.

Parametric Modeling

The terms "parametric design" is originally used in architecture, to describe design method using an algorithm based model system. By constantly changing parameters, we're able to get different forms in realtime, analyzing best results based on design intents, and even being a form-finding process.

In this project, we aim to explore the forms which fit in original slipcasting process, hard to be crafted by hand, but with rich parametric aesthetic. Form exporation stage shows the possibility we discovered by applying distinctive math pattern in nature, adding gradual changing parameters, altering smooth or low-poly facade, etc.

Slip Casting

Slipcasting is a technique for the mass-production of pottery and ceramics. The technique is suited to the production of complex shapes, especially if with relief decoration and thin walls. By combining this technique with digital parametric design which generate forms depending on the behavior of a computer algorithm in response to a set of data, we can create pottery that is aesthetic, hard to be crafted by hand, yet manufacturable.

The porosity of the plaster mold absorbs the water in the slurry and thus causes a deposit of material to form on the inner wall of the mold, taking the shape of the mold.

The thickness of this "skin" is proportional to the time for which it is allowed to form.

Prototyping

Before starting the final works, we design a series of objects that are relatively easy to produce. All the ceramic objects in this stage needs only one plaster mould and can be released from one side. This step help us to prototype the manufacturing process and adjust some details.

Final Design

After finishing the prototyping stage, we start designing the final ceramic objects. We use the system we designed in the early stage to generate a huge amount of different patterns, then select eight patterns in the end. Before opening the plaster moulds, we 3D-print the models and make many test pieces of glaze for the final coloring stage.

Design Concept

Today's CAD only plays a role in aiding designers to communicate design intent after finalization of 3D model. By building generative algorithms, however, not only allows to rapidly generate unlimited numbers of design alternatives in parallel in compliance with design specifications, but also helps designers open up a wider range of possibilities for form explorations.

The Principle

The prototype of the Coral system comes from the basic principle in mold design. By setting the models to grow randomly on a predetermined plane, it’s promised that these models can be split by two separated moulds. Then, the system extends to the three planes of X, Y, and Z, and even to unoriented planes in order to increase the complexity of the forms it generates, while challenging the traditional mold splitting method.

E stands for electric and effortless, E-Clipper is an electric nail clipper eliminates the possibility that elders would hurt themselves while nail-clipping.

People are often accompanied by joint stiffness, blurred vision and other issues when they get older, these make them difficult to cut their nails, even accidentally hurt themselves.

How might we improve the nail-trimming experience for elders, let them no longer disturbed about it?

Observation

At the beginning of this project, professor ask us to observe and record elder’s behavior within its context without interfering with their activities. It’s useful to see what people actually do within real contexts and time frames, rather than accept what they say they did after the fact, it could help us to find the real problems.

Define the Problem

After finishing the observation stage, I chose to tackle the nail-trimming problem. People are often accompanied by joint stiffness, blurred vision and other issues when they get older, these make them difficult to cut their nails, and even accidentally hurt themselves. How might we improve the nailtrimming experience for elders, let them no longer disturbed about it?

因為老了、另外一半也過世了，也沒什麼社交生 活，每天對我來說最重要的就是做家事，還有煮 飯給家人吃。

傳統市場人很多，地板又很髒，又有機車來來回 回，常常擠來擠去的很不方便。

菜剛煮好熱熱的時候家人就來吃是我覺得最有成 就感的時候了！有時候煮好了大家都還在忙沒有 馬上吃，菜冷掉了我就覺得很可惜。

但傳統市場是最有人情味的地方，去買菜還可以 順便跟鄰居聊天，平常都沒有人可以聊天。

兒子跟孫子常常很晚回家，問他們要不要吃東西 他們都說吃飽了，有時候會有點失落。

有時候地板有坑坑洞洞，菜籃就會被卡住，要用 手輕輕扳一下才能繼續前進，雖然這個動作不費 力，但還是小小覺得麻煩。

買完菜後都會站在巷子口跟鄰居們閒聊，有時候 會聽到哪家人的孫子又出國念書了，或是哪家人 的長輩又去世了。自從另一半過世後就常常思考 這個問題，雖然現在身體還健壯，但不知道什麼 時候會換我呢。

晚上在陽台時會聽到樓下安養院有人在亂叫的聲 音，覺得很可怕。不知道自己老了後會不會也是 這樣需要人家照顧。

PAIN

有時候買太多東西真的會覺得自己老了，雖然有 菜籃很方便，但因為家裡是老舊公寓，要提著菜 籃爬樓梯對我來說還是很吃力。

害怕自己有一天沒辦法再靠自己的力量從床上起 來，沒辦法去菜市場買菜、跟鄰居閒話家常，然 後回家煮飯給大家吃。 煮飯好像有越煮越鹹的趨勢，自己喜歡吃的軟爛 的飯兒子不愛吃、所以要煮兩次。

GAIN

希望家裡能有電梯，但應該是不太可能，因為我 買東西回家要搬上樓很累。

希望傳統市場不要關門，不要被超市取代。不然 我就不知道要怎麼跟鄰居們聯絡感情了，也沒有 地方可以聚在一起講八卦。

教了又忘，手機怎麼這麼難？ The problem about technology learning

THINK AND FEEL?

現在科技真的蠻進步的，有了網路後之前一、 二十年沒聯絡的朋友們都在網路上找到了。

從同事那邊聽到什麼有趣的新軟體想安裝自己又 不會，只能叫老公或是小孩幫忙弄，有時候又怕 他們會不耐煩。 常常不小心按到手機的一些東西，資料不見，趕 快跟小孩求救，但又說不出個所以然。小孩也不 知道問題在哪裡，這時候就會很怪自己。

HEAR?

同樣的問題如果我問小孩或是老公太多次，他們 就會不耐煩，有時候我乾脆不用了。

有一種指甲刀是有配備放大鏡的，但用過幾次覺 得一點都不好用，就算有放大鏡剪起指甲來還是 很吃力啊。

隨著年紀越來越大，指甲有越來越厚的跡象，所 以就越來越難剪了，指甲刀一定要夠利。

同事的手機一隻接著一隻換，我覺得很浪費錢， 手機只要還能用、能上網就好了。

SAY AND DO?

有時候在外面迷路了，還要打電話叫小孩幫我找 路，再告訴我怎麼走，因為我不會用手機找路！

不會用注音打字，用手寫的有點慢，語音又常常 錯字。有時候同事打了兩三句時我只回了一句， 這時候我就會乾脆叫我小孩幫我打字！

因為家裡指甲刀是幾隻共用，所以用完都會洗 過，很怕其他家人被我感染。

不知道有沒有其他更好剪指甲的方式，能讓我不 用那麼辛苦地盯著看，然後也不會剪到肉。

小孩跟我都忙，常常都是透過臉書得知小孩的近 況，但是他們最近都不用臉書了？

PAIN

老花眼越來越嚴重了，剪指甲時都一定要戴眼 鏡，每次剪完眼睛都好酸。

在公司工作時同事們都會互相分享一些最新有趣 的軟體，說實話我一點興趣都沒有，但有時候又 想要加入他們的話題，就會請小孩幫我載。

晚上手機一定是放在書桌上面充電，因為很多新 聞說放在床頭邊會身體不好，每次跟小孩提醒這 件事情他們都不聽！

最大的麻煩就是剛才說的，常常手機出問題時自 己不知道該怎麼處理，跟小孩講也講不出個所以 然，然後小孩就也沒辦法幫我處理。

THINK AND FEEL?

連處理這些生活小事都變得越來越吃力，真的感 覺時光匆匆、歲月不饒人啊！

在公司看到好多外勞都在用智慧型手機了，心想 不行，絕對不能比他們還落後，所以馬上就自己 新辦了一隻。

用手機上網通常是逛臉書跟用 LINE 居多，在臉 書上面看到朋友們 PO 什麼好吃好玩的，就會也 想要去吃吃看或是玩玩看。 常看到 LINE 上面有人分享用手機太久結果眼睛 出問題的新聞，很擔心小孩以後眼睛會出問題。

早上準備一下就會去菜市場買菜，買完菜後會跟 鄰居們閒聊一下再回家。因為家裡早上都沒人， 所以只會準備自己的份量的午餐，沒有吃早餐的 習慣。

希望家人們能一直吃我煮的飯，但大家好像還是 比較喜歡吃媳婦處的菜。

常常凌晨就起床了，因為睡不著。

吃完飯後會看電視，或是小睡一下，或是偶爾社 區有活動會去參加，但是很少。等到晚上家人回 來後會準備晚餐給家人吃。

平常休假時會去桃園那邊找姐妹，如果有吃大餐 就會想要拍美美的照片在臉書上面炫耀。

雖然這個好像是我的問題，但希望手機有時候有 突發狀況時能告訴我發生了什麼事情，我才能叫 老公或是小孩處理。 如果手機能有什麼助理或是引導，讓我能用下命 令的方式完成我想做的事情就好了。 如果有一天，我能靠我自己完成所有想在手機上 完成的操作就很好，但其實現在這樣也沒關係。

之前聽過有專門幫老人剪指甲的人，雖然很好， 但是希望我一輩子都不會麻煩到他們。

之前同事有因為亂剪指甲得過凍甲，要帶矯正器 矯正指甲，感覺很麻煩。聽說如果再嚴重一點會 需要把指甲整個拔掉讓它重長，很恐怖。 在網路上有看到正確的剪指甲方式，所以現在都 有照著剪了，就不會剪到肉。

SAY AND DO?

指甲縫裡面常常會藏污納垢，但又很難清理，所 以每次剪指甲時就會剪得很短，比較不容易有髒 東西卡在裡面。 有時候會不小心剪指甲剪得太深，剪到皮肉卻沒 感覺到，結果過幾天就發炎了。

隨著年紀越來越大身體開始出現一些小毛病，比 如說髖關節退化，一到季節變換的時候關節就會 痛得不得了。

在傳統產業工作，看到很多人老了，沒辦法在幹 體力活又沒有一技之長、存款，不知道他們以後 該怎麼辦。

現在連剪指甲、綁鞋帶這種小事都覺得費力。

台灣的傳統產業很多都要被外勞取代了，但他們 中文不好，有時候很難溝通。

以前做生意需要喝酒應酬，喝了太多才導致今天 這個髖關節的毛病，希望小孩以後不要這樣。

希望再過幾年就能退休了，身體越來越不行。

小孩老婆都很常提醒我要注意身體，可是常常一 忙起來就忘記了。

小孩有時候跟我聊到工作的事情就會批哩啪拉講 了一堆，但沒注意到小孩其實不想聽。

平常除了工作外也沒什麼休閒活動，以前會常常 去跟別人打麻將，但現在也越來越少了。

以前年輕時從來不會做菜、做家事，現在年紀越 來越大了反而偶爾會下廚給家人們吃。

From Insights to Design

After analyzing the interview informations, I realize that it's the cutting action that makes elders hurt themselves easily. It would be much safer if elders don't need to cut the nail, so I start to think if there're any alternatives.

As a student who major in industrial design, I'm familiar with machines that make models, such as grinding wheel, milling machine, etc. What if we could grind or mill the nails like machine grind the models?

Ideation Sketch

In the beginning of ideation, I try to solve the problem without using electricity. There’s a little indent at the front of the nail clipper, which would prevent the user from cutting their fingers. The form of product is also based on ergonomics, which includes a storage chamber underneath the blade.

I decide to use electricity at the end, because it’s more convenient for users to cut their nails, and it’s more safe as well. I spend a lot of time to find out the best form for holding, it’s one of the most important part of the tool.

I used Rhino to build 3D models and printed it out to test it. One of the user thinks that it’s a little bit big for females to hold, and the storage chamber is too small that is hard to open. The common point of all users is that they all think the form is aesthetic and it’s easy to hold.

The Art of Light

The design topic of this semester is light. Professor divide us into five groups and let us discover different filed of light, such as the history of light, the physics of light, the biology of light, etc. I’m responsible for the art of light.

At the beginning of this project, I explore the functionality of lamps by researching them.

After discussion with professors, I list 8 dimensions that great lamps should have. I collect a lot of lamps on the market, and score them by these dimensions to pick out the best one.

Interview & Persona

I interviewed lots of people and take pictures of their tables, see if there're any chances to find out the better way of lighting. After this research I find out that there're only three types of student's table, and only two ways of lighting. The common ground of those people is that they all want their table lamp to be adjustable and space-efficient, but no one can do that at this moment.

Ideation Sketch

After researching the information about light and defining the target audience. I start to brainstorm ideas. This process lasted for three weeks, I keep modifying the form and trying to meet the needs of users. These are part of my ideas.

Modeling & Testing

I make a lot of models with corrugated cardboard to make sure that the form will meet the requirements. After that, I build 3D models and print it out to make prototypes.

The Story Behind

The world consists of people, object, and the environment. Defining the relationships between these dimensions is extremely difficult, but possible if done step by step. For example, the lamp is a device which provides lighting, a constitutive element of the surroundings; and it is also a space-dividing tool once emitting light. When lamps light up different places, areas for varied purposes are thus defined.

From Idea to Product

As designers, we must keep searching for the most harmonious relationship between people, objects, and the environment, in order to design an excellent product. This is how the Composition series was made. I interpreted the lamp holders, lamp stands, and light bulbs with geometric elements such as points, lines, and planes.

Through re-structuring of the elements, the lamps are allowed to fulfill both function and aesthetics in the most simplistic form.

chapter 2

This chapter is the record of my internship, workshop, and exhibition experience. Participating in workshops is one of the most efficient ways to learn new stuffs, so I really enjoyed it. I will participate in at least two distinct activities in each semester. Although it often make myself tired, I really think it worth the effort.

INTERNSHIP AT ACER Design Thinking and Research

Acer Inc. is a Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation specialising in advanced electronics technology and is headquartered in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan.

It ranks No.4 for tatal PCs, and has a global workforce of 7400 employees. I participated in the summer intern program and work at Acer Design Studio.

My Work at Acer

At first, it was a two-months intern program. My job is to reasearch about how to break the barriers between Acer and young people. I learnt not only design thinking teamwork skills but also understanding the operation of company. After that, I got a one-year offer as a formal intern because of my outstanding performance. I work two days a week, directly with Acer designers to deal with the internal cases, such as new smart phone research, defining new target audience and design kids wearable.

Acer Design Studio

Acer Design studio, also called A Corner, is a place we use design thinking methodology to carry out the projects. Acer worked with IDEO few years ago and sent their employees to the headquarters of IDEO to learn this methodology. My mentor Kristy was one of them, she is now a senior design manager who run this place.

Achievements

After I presented my report about young people to my boss, the AVP of Acer, I got a chance to present it directly to the CEO and VPs, because my boss think this report is very important that leaders should know about it. I'm the only intern to do that, it's a very special experience.

Challenge yourself with a great group of designers, makers, and hackers, and tinker with an awesome team of 12 mentors led by the MIT Media Lab to enhance our everyday mobility in cities. The topic of this workshop is "Mobility++". Recent progress in AI, IoT, and Behavioral Sciences have opened a new frontier of possibilities for mobility services— in their scale, design, integration, implementation, adoption, operation, and maintenance. These potential improvements in mobility services can contribute directly to enhancing the commerce, citizen/tourist experience, and socio-economic equity of a city.

The interesting problem that we have found is the conflict between pedestrians and drivers. The drivers should let the pedestrians pass the crosswalk first, but many drivers in Taiwan won't do that.

Introduction

CROSSER is an APP which can make drivers and pedestrians safer by using sound and vibration. Users can choose between walking mode and driving mode after opening the app.

Different modes notify users in different ways.

Two modes

Under the driving mode, users can view pedestrians' position within 200 meters, and when pedestrians approach within 5 meters, the App will activate wearable devices to vibrate.

We strongly recommend people enjoy CROSSER with wearable devices, since sound and vibration will notify users to be more aware of environment. Sounds and vibration from wearable devices will warn pedestrians and drivers.

Human-Computer Interaction The topic of this year’s human-computer interaction workshop is “Re-”, “Re-” stands for a process of rethinking, reconstruction and revolution. The workshop invite us to set free our imagination and subvert our mind through multi-disciplinary collaboration in six days. Together, we aim to discover a deeper level of interaction within human, objects, and everything in between.

What is HCI?

HCI (human-computer interaction) is the study of how people interact with computers and to what extent computers are or are not developed for successful interaction with human beings. A significant number of major corporations and academic institutions now study HCI. The purpose of the workshop is to promote HCI. Brainstorming

Initial Idea

Because the topic of this year’s humancomputer interaction workshop is “RE-”, we designed a series of interactive installations to reconstruct the way that people interact with communication softwares. We want people to notice that the development of technology has change the human behavior. By creating the installations, we hope to arouse the reflection of the relationship between technology and human beings.

Our Works

We noticed that the way people communicate in communication softwares is different from the way they communicate in the real world—people tend to be more exaggerated in the communication softwares. Our installations materialize the user interface of communication softwares, if visitors want to send massage in the installations, they need to be acting exactly like what they said.

For example, we would say “OTZ” in the communication softwares, “OTZ” means you worship someone and kneel to that person, if the visitors want to send “OTZ” in our interactive installations, they must kneel in front of the installations.

The last day of the workshop is a open exhibition at National Taiwan University. The workshop has been in place for years so it’s quite famous. There are a lot of professors and people in the industry came to visit it, there are even start-up companies gave us their business card.

Initial Idea

Ascend to another stage of life is always perplexing, on the one hand we look forward to the upcoming challenges, on the other hand we are afraid to leave the comfort zone. The growth process is always accompanied by the sadness of lost and the pleasure of found, that is the complexity of pleasure we are trying to communicate.

Concept Video

We used the image of sushi train to present the concept of growth. Different objects are the metaphors of different stage of life. At the beginning of this video is a birthday hat, which imply the birth. At the ending of this video is a couple have a baby, which imply the end of the story and a new beginning.
