"From this hour I ordain myself loos'd of limits and imaginary lines. Going where I list, my own master total and absolute. Listening to others, considering well what they say. Pausing, searching, receiving, contemplating. Gently, but with undeniable will, divesting myself of the holds that would hold me."

Walt Whitman, Song of the Open Road

TECHNOLOGY INDIFFERENCE

It feels like I don’t belong to this society sometimes, and the feeling of loneliness is bothering me. However, I know this sense isn’t derived from having no friend. It’s derived from the coldness of this society. Therefore, I asked friends and families, how to end this kind of loneliness? They say sharing is the simplest way, and the merit of sharing is not about making a relationship with others instead. It’s about sharing with people your hope and warmth sincerely.

WHAT IF...? What if I could design a product which makes people realize the world is not as cold as they think, and the design can also make people share their warmth unconsciously? It's similar to the concept of "Empathy Box" from the movie Blade Runner. 9

IDEATION In the process of developing ideation, I used mind map to develop the idea "Sharing" and sorted out my initial core idea. That is, I want to connect people's feelings. Then, I chose to use light as a cut in point to design my device. Yet, the light is an abstract object and it would be better if combines with something that people use often in daily life. Finally, the idea of making a glowing bench came into my mind. 10

A BETTER CHOICE It’s not an easy task to drive a motorcycle in my country. In Taiwan, every year more than 40% of casualties were caused by motorcycle riders. However, it seems a general choice for most Taiwanese to have a motorcycle for transportation for it’s cheapness and outstanding mobility. I did some researches and I assumed that the motorcycle could be more user-friendly and protective. Not just a vehicle allows the rider to expose themselves in a risky environment.

18

HOW TO? The process of thinking what is a doable method to protect riders is a big challenge. I can create so many forms, put a bunch of innovative ideas in a futuristic concept motorcycle. However, it must be theoretically working. Finally, I decided to make a shell for motor-cycle because I think it is the most practical way. ALIAS MODEL

OMNI is a 2 seater enclosed electric motorcycle. The rider’s position is lower than motorcycle we have nowadays. The shell is composed of durable and light material. OMNI not only protects the rider, but gives the rider an unprecedented riding experience. 23

UI DESIGN When riders are riding, the primary screen only projects vital information for them, and the secondary screen will become blurry. While they are not riding, second interface will allow users to manipulate to obtain more definite information.

SAFE & EASY When I was designing OMNI, all I cared about was user’s safety and convenience. Therefore, I believe that if an user unfortunately encountered an impact, the structure and air bags can protect him or her to some extent. On the other hand, the shell is easy to open and close. The user can get in or get out with no problem. And the riders of OMNI, it's a big relief to them have no worry about driving on rainy day or under the cruel sunlight. 26

STEERING SYSTEM CONCEPT DESIGN The concept of steering system is modified from the classic motorcycle. In order to create more interior space for the users, I chose to use multi-link control structure. It won’t be too complicated or expensive, either.

27

28

WHAT'S NEXT? I believe in the future there will be more diversity of the forms or uses of motorcycles. Consequentely, the diversity will change the system of transportation in some ways. Although it’s still a vague vision; yet, I put my faith in it.

BALANCE Balance is the topic teacher gave me on the day one of design workshop. The first image came into my head is balancing bird. It’s a small toy which you can use the toy bird’s peak to make it stay on any platform and keep it balanced. Then, I kept thinking what material can be combined with the balancing bird to make it‌ more poetic. Finally, I figure out I can combine balancing bird with a lamp, then, use this lamp to tell a story.

32

SKETCH & DETAILS The idea development was undergoing very fast. Therefore, you can see the sketch is a little bit rough; yet, I want users to be touched by this design and feel the beauty of the relationship between parents and children.

33

34

INTERACTION When users want to turn on the light, they need to take the bird from the branch and use its peak to balance it on the little birds mouth. Then, the mother bird will light up automatically.

STORYTELLING Everyday my parents do the same routine. They leave home in the early morning and come home late at night in order to provide the family. I think my parents just like the glowing bird which I designed. They light up themselves in the darkness to guide us, take care of us and keep us safe and sound. Then, when the sun rises, they need to leave home to work again. The philosophy of Homecoming is that I want to say parents love us relentlessly.
