Foreword Membership of this Golf Club provides you with the opportunity to participate in all aspects of competitive and social golf. Golf is a game which depends a great deal on tradition and long custom for its charm. Your enjoyment, and that of others, is often impaired by the lack of knowledge or disregard of what is expected of a Member of the Club. It cannot be over emphasised that the fundamental Rule is consideration of one’s fellow Members. The status of a golf club may be judged by the etiquette of its Members. The Rules of the Club are designed to make our Club a better place for us to play golf. Preservation of the history, traditions and customs of the game of golf is the responsibility of all Club Members. To know the Rules and observe the Etiquette will not only ensure this, but also enable you to better enjoy the game and earn you the respect and support of your friends and other Club Members.

Priority on the Course 1. Order of Play 1.1 Players should allow the President and the Captain the courtesy of precedence from the tee. 1.2 All play must commence from the 1st or 10th tee, unless otherwise approved by the Match Committee. 1.3 Four ball matches have right of way on Tuesday am, Wednesday am, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday competitions. One, two and three ball matches have right of way at all other times. 1.4 On other than Club Competition Days, or when a booking sheet is not in operation, order of play is to be determined by the Club Professional.

2. Saturdays 2.1 Saturday is a compulsory competition, starting from the first and tenth tees. 2.2 Each player at the end of any competition round must SCAN HIS OWN SCORE CARD through the Card Reader in the Pro Shop. Do not rely on your partner, as it is not his responsibility; incorrectly marked cards may result in disqualification.

3a. Wednesdays 3a.1 Women Members Golf Day; Women have priority until 12pm, unless otherwise defined in the programme. 3a.2 Compulsory competition for booking sheet players.

3b. Thursdays 3b.2

Compulsory competition.

4. Sunday Competitions 4.1 Sunday (am) is a compulsory competition, starting from the first and tenth tees. On programmed events, competition players have right of way.

5. Etiquette – It’s up to you 5.1 Do not move hoses or sprinklers or attempt to stop automatic sprinklers. 5.2 Do fill divots with sand. 5.3 Do repair pitch marks on greens. 5.4 All players must carry and use a sand bucket to fill divots on the fairway and in the rough.

6

5.5 Do think of other players following you. If you are having trouble and holding up other players, then call them through so that you can all enjoy the game. Courtesy and thoughtfulness pay dividends on a golf course. 5.6 Do call following players through when it becomes apparent that a ball will not easily be found. It is not only golf etiquette, but also a ruling of the Match Committee. 5.7 Do remember that if you wish this course to be what you want it to be, then each player must see that nothing is done to destroy fairways or plants.

14. Local Rules

Local Rules and Temporary Local Rules are as printed on the Score Card and posted on the Notice Board.

15. Rules and Regulations •

• • •

Any Rules and Regulations of the Board of Directors relating to competitions shall apply whether printed herein or otherwise published or not. All cards must be scanned through the Card Reader in the Pro Shop IMMEDIATELY upon leaving the last green, unless the player has retired. Player entering competition is responsible for the payment of the competition fee; failure to do so is disqualification, but scorecard maybe accepted for handicap. Players must report to starter five minutes before tee off time, or earlier if specified, as a condition of a competition. Players are requested to make every effort to hold their position in the field. Members should acquaint themselves with “Order of Play”.

Male Members Handicap Grades “A” Grade Scratch (or better) to 12 “B” Grade 13 to 19 “C” Grade 20 and over.

16. Slow Play 16.1 With the large number of players to be accommodated on the course it is imperative that slow play does not impede the fields. The Match Committee regularly looks at the effect slow play is having on the comfort of Members’ games. Your position in the field is just behind the group in front of you not just in front of the group behind you.

14

16.2 The following time saving measures should be taken: • Walk immediately to your ball and play if there is no danger of personal injury to players in front. • Always play your own ball before looking for any fellow competitor’s ball. Don’t wait for 3 minutes before calling the following group through. • If held up in front, use this time to make club selection and practice swings. • When reaching the green leave your bag adjacent to the next tee. • Player who tees off first must hit before marking card. • The first players to putt out should proceed to the next tee and tee off if the next fairway is clear. 16.3 If players fail to keep their place in the field and lose one clear hole behind those immediately in front, the players following may exercise the right to go through. The players at fault must therefore: • Make up the lost ground without delay or • Call the following group through. If they fail to do so, the players following must indicate they are exercising their right to go through. 16.4 Players should not be concerned with the position of the following group but should at all times keep up with the group in front. The low handicapper, or nominated Group Captain is responsible for etiquette and observance of the rules of Order of Play.

17. Corporate Golf

Held generally on a Monday or Friday, members are advised to check the Website and Notice Boards for tee closures.

18. Golf Competitions & How They Are Played

These notes are only intended to assist in the general concept of how various competitions are played. They must be read in conjunction with the Rules of Golf and in particular the Board of Directors shall lay down the conditions under which a competition is to be played (Rule 33).

15

18.1 Stroke

The score at each hole is entered on the scorecard, totalled and the player’s full handicap deducted. The player who completes the stipulated round in the least nett strokes will be the winner; usually a gross winner is also determined.

18.2 Par

In Par play the score is entered on the card in the same way as in stroke play with the exception that where the score exceeds par for the hole, after allowing for handicap stroke (if the player is in receipt of one) the score should not be written in. It is the custom that when a player is beaten by Par, the ball shall be picked up. This helps speed up play. After entering the stroke score on the card, the result is marked in the column provided with a ‘+’ sign for a win, an ‘0’ for a half and a ‘-’ for a loss. At the end of the round the plus and minus signs are added and the nett result written in as so many ‘up’, ‘down’ or ‘all square’. A player is allowed his full stroke handicap and the strokes are taken at holes as indicated on the stroke index on the card. Where the handicap is more than 18, two strokes will be allowed on the number of holes that the handicap exceeds 18. These strokes will be taken in the same order as followed for the first 18 holes unless the index goes beyond 18.

18.3 Stableford

This system of scoring by points was introduced by Dr. Stableford of the Wallasey Golf Club (Liverpool, England) in 1932 and has become very popular. The popular method of playing a Stableford competition is for the player to take strokes at holes as in a Par competition using full handicap and to score points on the nett result at each hole. At the end of the round all points scored are added up and the player having the highest number of points is the winner. In scoring, after allowing for handicaps, a player who scores par receives 2 points, for 1 over par 1 point; for a birdie or 1 under par, 3 points; for an eagle or 2 under par, 4 points, and so on. For example, a player receiving a stroke on a par 4 hole scores 4 giving him a nett 3; for this he receives 3 points. A player at a par 3 hole scores a 4 but does not receive a stroke; for this he would receive 1 point.

16

18.4 Four Ball Best Ball v Par

Two players play as partners each taking strokes at holes as in a par competition. If one of the partners wins a hole and the other halves it, only the win is counted. If one halves a hole with par and the other loses it, only the half is counted and so on. Plus, half and minus signs are added at the end of the round and recorded as in an ordinary par competition. In a four-ball handicap event care must be taken to mark the scores of each player in separate columns headed by initials of the player. If the scores are mixed and it is impossible for the Committee to check the card, the players will be disqualified.

18.5 Four Ball Best Ball Stableford

Played in exactly the same manner as above except that the better ball of the partnership will be credited with points instead of plus, half or minus. In four-ball events players should discontinue play of the hole if they cannot better their partner’s score.

18.6 Foursomes

Two players play as partners and use one ball. The partners strike off alternately from the tee and thereafter strike the ball alternately during the play at each hole. Scoring is done as for a stroke round and the total is subject to a deduction of half the partner’s aggregate handicaps.

NOTE: If either player incurs a penalty stroke it does not alter the rotation of play. In a foursome stroke play competition which consists of more than one stipulated round the order of play may be changed between rounds unless the Committee has laid down as a condition of play that the original order of play must be preserved throughout the competition.

General All the foregoing competitions are forms of stroke play and subject to the Rules governing stroke play. Special rules for par and stableford competitions are set out in Rule 32. Rule 31 covers the special rules for four-ball par and stableford competitions. Foursomes may be played under either stroke play rules or match play conditions and Rule 29 is relevant to foursome’s events. Other Competitions In addition to the competitions listed above, many clubs conduct competitions that are not specifically covered in the Rules of Golf. Some of the more popular types of play are listed below, together with suggestions regarding methods of conducting these events.

17

It cannot be too strongly emphasised however, that since these competitions are not covered by the Rules of Golf, the Committee must carefully lay down in advance and publish the conditions of play. The State Association will not, except in the most exceptional circumstances, give a decision on any query submitted when play is conducted otherwise than in accordance with the rules. It is also emphasized that singles events cannot be held in conjunction with four-ball events as the Rules do not allow a player to be simultaneously a fellow-competitor and a partner. A similar prohibition applies to playing a stroke round and a match play round concurrently.

18.7 Mixed Four Ball Best Ball Par or Stableford

These games are played as described previously, except that the woman plays from her own tees, uses her own scorecard, local rules, etc. The result is only transferred to her partner’s card when her score for the hole is better than his. Care must be taken when checking the card to refer to the women’s card when dealing with holes halved or won by her.

18.8 Mixed Foursomes

Mixed Foursomes are played in the same manner as foursomes except that the women use their own tees and observe their own local rules when it is their turn to play. The Committee should lay down a condition of play whether the male or female is required to play from the first tee, and in competitions played under stroke conditions, and consisting of more than one stipulated round, whether this order is to be preserved.

18.9 Canadian Foursomes

Played as above, except that both players play tee shots at every hole and afterwards continue with whichever ball they nominate, with the partner playing the second stroke. Handicap allowance is 3/8 of aggregate stroke handicap.

18.10 Pinehurst Foursomes

Both players play tee shots at each hole, and then play a second stroke with their partner’s ball. One ball is then selected and play proceeds as in foursomes with the owner of the ball selected playing the third stroke. Handicap allowance is 3/8 of aggregate stroke handicap for stroke competitions

18

18.11 Medley Competition

Played as four ball – either Par or Stableford – but two men or two women play on ¾ of their stroke handicap using their own card or full handicap using the men’s card.

18.12 Ambrose Competition

A Team Stroke Event usually played by a group of four but can be any number. On every hole, each member of the team may hit a tee shot. The team then selects one of the tee shots from which to play. All members of the team may then hit from that position. This procedure is repeated until the ball is holed. Team members can play in any order at any time. TEE SHOTS: 4 BALL - Each team member’s tee shot must be used a least THREE (3) times per eighteen (18) holes. 3 BALL - Each team member’s tee shot must be used a least FOUR (4) times per eighteen (18) holes. 2 BALL - Each team member’s tee shot must be used a least SIX (6) times per eighteen (18) holes. The scorer must record whose tee shot was used on each hole. Selected Shot: The position of the selected shot is marked. Each player may then place their ball within one club length of the marked position, no closer to the hole and play from this position. If the selected shot is on the fairway, in the rough, the fringe of the green or in a hazard, the ball must be placed within one (1) club length of the selected shot, no closer to the hole and must remain on the fairway, the rough, the fringe of the green or in the hazard. In a sand bunker, the sand may be raked prior to any ball being placed.

On the Putting Green: The position of the selected ball is marked. Other team members may then place their ball within one putter head length of the marked position, no closer to the hole and putt from this position. To speed up play a player may hole out on the green.

Scorecard: The scorecard must show each team member’s handicap and must be signed by the marker and countersigned by one other team member.

19

Handicaps: For groups of four, one eighth of the total team handicap is used. For groups of three, one sixth is used and for a two ball one quarter.

18.13 Flag Competition

The score taken on each hole is entered on a card as in a stroke round. When a player has completed a number of strokes equal to the par of the course (as shown on the score card) plus his stroke handicap, he will have finished the round. The first player to start in the competition will carry the flag (mounted on a stick) and plant it on the spot where his ball lay at the finish to the round. If the ball is in the rough the flag may be planted at the side of the fairway, but no nearer the hole. If a subsequent player has not finished his round when he reaches the flag, he carries it with him, and replants it when he reaches the end of his strokes. The winner is the player who carries the flag the longest distance from the first tee and it normally happens that the final position is somewhere beyond the 18th green, usually on the 1st or 2nd hole. When the competition is played in two or more divisions, two or more flags, clearly marked will be necessary. NOTE: Players are required to complete full 18 holes.

18.14 Match Play

Match play is second only to stroke play as the most popular form of competition in golf. In fact, match play and stroke play are the bedrock forms of competition. And there are many different ways to play match play, all built around its core principle: players (or teams) compete to win individual holes, with the side winning the most holes claiming the match. Here is an introduction to those match play formats:

Singles Match Play Singles match play pits Player A against Player B, hole after hole. If Player A scores a 4 on the first hole while Player B records a 5, Player A wins the hole. Ties are called “halves”; a match that is all square (or tied) after 18 holes continues until there is a winner.

Fourball Match Play In Fourballs, each side consists of two players. Each player plays his or her own ball throughout the round. On each hole, the low ball of the two players serves as that side’s score. For example, on the first hole for Team A, Player 1 scores a 4 and Player 2 scores a 5, so the team score is 4. If Team A gets a 4 while Team B scores 5, then Team A wins the hole.

20

Foursomes Match Play Foursomes match play is one of the best-known forms of match play. It’s not very common as a format used among friends during a casual round of golf, however. Foursomes pits 2-person teams against each other, with each team playing one ball, alternate shot. Example: Player A and Player B are partners. On the first hole, A tees off; B plays the second shot; A plays the third hot; and so on until the ball is holed. The lower of the two teams’ scores win the hole. Handicap allowances can be applied for the various Four Ball competitions.

18.15 TTG Medal (Gross) / TTG Plate (Handicap)

Monthly Medal and Handicap winners compete in April each year for the above trophy. Medal winners play for the TTG Medal and handicap winners’ play for the TTG Plate.

18.16 Countback Method for Deciding Ties

For 18 hole events the best score for the last 9 holes shall be used. If there is still a tie the last 6 holes, or if still tied, the last 3 holes. If a tie still persists then hole by hole from the 18th. In 27, 36 and 72 hole events, the last 18 holes shall be used and if still tied, countback as in 1 above. In handicap events the relevant handicap or fraction thereof shall be applied. Where a penalty applicable under Rule 3-5 of the Rules of Golf is applied to a result, this penalty shall be ignored so far as the countback is concerned.

Notes: (a) For a 9-hole event the best score for the last 6 holes shall be used; If there is still a tie, the last 3 holes; If a tie still persists, then hole by hole from the 9th hole. (b) In all cases, the last holes are as per the scorecard, not necessarily as played.

24. Care of the Course Players shall at all times co-operate with the course maintenance staff to allow them to perform their tasks. 24.1 Bunkers

Before leaving a bunker, the player should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints. After smoothing, rakes should be placed with the rake handle at right angles to the bunker edge. The end of the rake handle is to be rested IN THE BUNKER in easy reach so as to avoid the need to enter the bunker to retrieve it. DO NOT: • Leave the rake parallel to the bunker edge. • Leave the rake handle resting on the bunker edge and sticking up in the air. • Throw the rake in the bunker and cause damage to the bunker surface.

24.2 Repair divots and pitch marks in greens

Through the green, a player should ensure that any divots made are filled with sand at once and pressed down, and that any damage to the putting green made by a ball is carefully repaired.

24.3 Damage to greens, flagsticks, etc.

24.7 Hand Pulled Buggies

Hand pulled buggies including battery-operated buggies are permitted to be taken across greens, but not permitted on tees.

25. Green Cutting Procedures

Greens are cut in a predetermined order. On days on which competitions are programmed, the aim is to cut each green before players on the time sheet are in a position to reach any particular green. In the event of players in a competition being ready to play a green, the staff are instructed to stand aside and allow the players to proceed. On other occasions, i.e. no competition or members playing golf earlier than times shown on the time sheet, the course staff are instructed to proceed with their programme of work. There are good reasons for this procedure, including the need to complete essential work on the entire course in the time available, after allowing for scheduled competitions. On such occasions, players must allow work to proceed, be it on the fairway, tee, green or practice fairway.

26. Course Safety Requirements: 26.1 Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare

The Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare Act requires the employer to maintain a safe working environment.

26.2 Safe Working Practices

Alternatively, the operator may call on golfers to play their shots. 26.2.3 In all situations, golfers MUST receive acknowledgement from Course Staff who are in range before playing a shot.

26.3 Failure to comply

Failure to comply with the above procedures could result in prosecution under the Occupational Health, Safety & Welfare Act.
