Labor Day Celebration in

Joint Declaration of Cyprus Trade Unions Members of WFTU for International Workers' Day 2025 PEO, DEV-İŞ, KTAMS, KTÖS, KTOEÖS, BES, KOOP
United, the workers of Cyprus honor once again International Workers' Day, the Global Day of Struggle and solidarity of workers.
May 1st remains a timeless symbol of the struggles of the global working class and a day of honor and remembrance for the pioneering activists of the Chicago uprising in 1886. Their messages remain relevant today, and their sacrifice continues to inspire the struggles of workers around the world for peace, for dignified work with rights, and for a society free from the exploitation of man by man.
2025 marks 100 years since the first celebration of May Day in Cyprus, when, amidst the harsh conditions of colonialism, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot pioneering workers raised their voices in demand. With a spirit of class solidarity, organization, and struggle, the united workers of Cyprus laid the foundations for significant achievements of the working class in Cyprus.
Today, workers around the world are experiencing the severe consequences of the ongoing capitalist crisis, rising costs, and inflation. Millions of people live on the brink of poverty, and social inequalities are widening dramatically. At the same time, attacks on trade union rights won through hard struggles intensify. Trade union action is being restricted, collective bargaining agreements are undermined, and essential social goods like healthcare and education are being commodified.

Humanity today is facing, more than ever since World War II, a dangerous intensification of militarization and aggression by imperialist forces. The war between Ukraine and Russia continues, with dramatic consequences for both peoples and for the peoples of Europe.
The European Union, instead of acting as a promoter of peace and international cooperation, chooses the path of militarization, increasing military spending. This choice not only intensifies the risks to global peace but also comes at the expense of social spending on health, education, and social welfare.
The targeted genocide and brutal crimes by the state of Israel against the Palestinian people continue with unrelenting intensity, with the complicity of the USA and the European Union.
Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot workers stand by the Palestinian people. We unite our voices with workers around the world against the genocide and Israeli occupation and express our full support for the Palestinian people's right to an independent Palestinian state.
On this symbolic day for the international working class, with our joint declaration, we reaffirm the message that we will not compromise with division and that the reunification of our country remains a priority for the working class of Cyprus.
The ongoing stagnation and lack of dialogue, combined with the creation of new faits accomplis, lead to the definitive partition of our homeland. The only realistic prospect remains the resumption of negotiations from where they were left off at Crans-Montana, aiming for a solution of a Bizonal, Bi-communal Federation with political equality, as defined by the United Nations. In anticipation of the meeting between the two leaders in July, it is crucial to use the period until then to promote confidence-building measures and create the conditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations with the sole aim of resolving the Cyprus problem based on the agreed framework.
The common problems and challenges faced by Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot workers highlight the need for intensifying the joint struggle and solidarity, with the sole aim of achieving peace and reunification of our homeland. In today's critical economic and social conditions, the solution to the Cyprus problem will provide a new perspective and dynamic for the development and progress of Greek-Cypriots, Turkish-Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites, and Latins.
With the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country, we will have the opportunity to continue our common struggles in conditions of peace and security within the framework of a united economy, with a unified system of labor relations and unified working conditions for all.
At a time when imperialist powers are bloodletting the world, and the voices of fascism, nationalism, and division are rising, we stand firm with class solidarity and the common struggles of Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot workers.
Through the ranks of the WFTU, we align ourselves with the global class trade union movement in the struggles for a better world.
Together for peace and social justice.

Mother's Day in Nicosia in the presence of Magda Fyssas
In the presence of the mother of Pavlos Fyssas, who was killed by the fascists of Golden Dawn in Greece, the Mother's Day took place on May 8 in a full hall in Nicosia in the local club of Omonia Kaimakli.
The event was organized by EKYSY and the Women's Office of PEO in collaboration with the EKYSY of Kaimakliou.
In her speech, the General Secretary of PEO, Sotiroula Charalambous, stated:
"There is no woman who brings a child into the world and has set a life goal to become her child a hero. Magda Fyssa did not choose to be the mother of a man who was violently killed by the fascists. She is the mother of Pavlos Fyssas today because she raised a son who did what every democratic person should do. To stand against injustice and fascism!"
At the event, Magda Fyssa and the Secretary of the Women's Department of DEVIS, Sevkiul Ulutag, addressed the event.
This was followed by an artistic program by the choir of EKYSY Kaimakli dedicated to MANA!
