The Badge of Merit

The Badge of Merit (Knoop van Verdienste) is awarded to those who have made exceptional efforts on behalf of HMSM. Last year, the following people were awarded the badge: Mien Segers for her participation in the IHAB board and Vera Dühring – former member of the management team for her contributions to our community such as transforming Château Bethlehem into a 26-rooms Teaching Hotel, developing the new Student Residence and establishing Foundation HMSM.

National Student Survey (NSE): Student satisfaction improves again We are very proud to share that in this year’s National Student Survey (NSE), we score 4 stars out of 5 on student satisfaction, an upward trend over the last years and a score above the national average. Students also awarded us high scores on ambiance (4.2), study coaching (3.9) and how our programme connects to the work field (4.2).

New minors

We have extended our curriculum with three new minors: Haute Hospitality, Leading People & Culture in a Changing World and New Economies & Sustainable Transitions. We developed these minors in cooperation with alumni and other industry leaders. These new minors offer our students the skills and knowledge that meet the needs of their future employer.

Second edition of Dine & Music for Talent a great success Last April the second edition of Dine & Music for Talent took place at the Teaching Hotel - a charity evening organized by Foundation HMSM and Conservatorium Maastricht Foundation. The funds raised by this fully booked event will enable both foundations to provide financial support to students who need it, helping them to grow in the fields of music or hospitality.

PD programme Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality Last academic year, the Professional Doctorate (PD) programme of Esther Sarphatie [F 1996] in the domain Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality started. Over the next 5 years, Esther will investigate the added value of hospitality to public services in the social domain. She will do this together with her supervisor Ankie Hoefnagels, and Maja Ročak and Karoline Wiegerink (HTH). A Professional Doctorate (PD) is a practice-oriented doctoral degree that focuses on solving complex real-world problems through applied research in a professional context.

Roots and Wings over gastvrijheid met een missie

Voor zowel Camille Oostwegel [F 2009] als zijn vader Camille Oostwegel sr. [F 1972] voelt terugkeren naar de Hotel Management School Maastricht als thuiskomen. Toen directeur Bas Vogel­sangs hen uitnodigde voor een interview over het thema Roots and Wings, leek de cirkel rond. Beiden hebben hun wortels diep verankerd op deze plek en vlogen van daaruit over de wereld om uiteindelijk met visie en slagkracht Oostwegel Collection op te bouwen: een familiebedrijf van wereldklasse met een Limburgse ziel. ‘Ik merk dat ik direct een glimlach op mijn gezicht krijg als ik op de campus loop’, vertelt de jonge Camille.

Geworteld in Maastricht Camille sr., zelf net zo oud als de Hotelschool, zat er begin jaren ‘70 met zijn neus bovenop toen Château Bethlehem gerenoveerd werd. Die ervaring wakkerde toen al onbewust het vuurtje aan voor zijn eigen levenswerk. Hij ging geïnteresseerd het gesprek aan met bouwvakkers en verdiepte zich als student in het proces van renovatie. Hij vroeg de architect een college te geven over restaureren én nieuwbouw.

En ook al zaten er slechts drie mensen in de zaal, alleen al voor hemzelf was het waardevol. ‘Hier heb ik het fundament gelegd, voor wat ik later gedaan heb’, vertelt Camille sr. ‘Zowel de fysieke leeromgeving als mijn bestuursfunctie binnen Amphitryon hebben daaraan bijgedragen.’

Hij combineerde zijn passie voor gastronomie met renovatie. Zijn zoon Camille trad later in zijn voetsporen en vond zijn weg naar dezelfde wortels: op de Hotelschool en in het familiebedrijf.

Vleugels uitslaan

Meaningful luxury

Net zoals veel andere Hotello’s, vlogen zij tijdens en na hun opleiding uit naar andere plaatsen in de wereld. ‘Ik ben na mijn opleiding eerst het buitenland gaan verkennen bij de Franse Accor Group. Daar ontdekte ik wat moderne hotellerie is, hoe je concepten aan moet passen per land en vooral hoe je een exploitatie rendabel maakt’, zegt Camille sr.

‘PR en marketing waren destijds nog heel nieuw. Toch had ik dit wel al geleerd op de Hotelschool: we kregen in ons studiejaar voor het eerst marketing en publiciteitsleer. Die vernieuwing, die later tot ontwikkeling is gekomen, hebben we vanaf het begin meegemaakt.’

Wat wel is veranderd, is de ontwikkeling van gastronomie. ‘Gastronomie is nu anders dan toen. Daar spelen we goed op in met onze wijngaarden en groentetuinen. Mensen gaan bewuster om met keuzes als ze op reis gaan - of ergens gaan werken. Wij hebben dat omschreven als ‘Meaningful luxury’. Dat gaat niet om rijkdom, overdaad en gouden kranen, maar om oprechte aandacht voor elkaar, voor de omgeving en iets nalaten voor een volgende generatie’, legt Camille uit. ‘Betekenisvol klinkt misschien een beetje zweverig, maar bij ons betaal je niet alleen voor een bed of een gerecht, maar je draagt ook bij aan het in stand houden van een erfgoed, en je doet écht mee.’

Terug op eigen grond Na een aantal jaar werkervaring greep Camille sr. de kans om te starten als ondernemer. Kasteel Erenstein was zijn eerste, grote vastgoedrenovatie (Red. verkocht in 2010). Later werden ook Château Neercanne, Winselerhof, Château St. Gerlach en Kruisherenhotel Maastricht aan de collectie ‘huizen’ toegevoegd, die iconisch zijn voor Zuid-Limburg. ‘Mijn vader is vanuit niets begonnen’, aldus Camille.

‘Hij heeft alles opgebouwd. Ik heb een kruiwagen met vier wielen gehad, zeg ik wel eens. Op 1 januari 2020 heb ik het bedrijf overgenomen: een grote eer. Ik kijk dankbaar terug op wat mijn vader heeft opgezet.’

De Hotelschool heeft een grote rol in gespeeld in het leven van vader en zoon.

En deze stap was niet vanzelfsprekend legt Camille uit: ‘Het is niet zo dat we uit een hospitality-familie kwamen: mijn opa was tandarts. Maar nu zijn we dat inmiddels wel.’

Blik op de toekomst Als Bas aan Camille vraagt wat de accenten zijn voor de toekomst van de Oostwegel Collection, is het antwoord heel helder: ‘Wat ons betreft staat kwaliteit altijd bovenaan.’ Dit geldt volgens hen niet alleen voor hun eigen onderneming, maar ze zien dit in de hele branche. ‘Ongeacht in welke regio je zit, ongeacht hoe de wereld zich ontwikkelt, is er altijd behoefte aan kwaliteit. En in ons geval zijn dat 5 sterren, je moet het gewoon heel goed doen voor diegene waar je je op richt.

Dan heb je een grote kans op succes.’

Gezamenlijke verantwoordelijkheid Bas stipt de overeenkomsten op het thema ‘verantwoordelijkheid’ aan. In de nieuwe strategie van HMSM heeft ‘Responsibility as a starting point’ een prominente plek in de ambitie van de school. Waarom is betekenisvol voor Oostwegel zo belangrijk? Camille deelt zijn visie: ‘Het zit in het DNA van ons bedrijf.

‘Hier heb ik het fundament gelegd, voor wat ik later gedaan heb.’

Hotelschool. Camille sr.: ‘Je ziet het overal terug. De lat van kwaliteit is voort­durend hoger gelegd: natuurlijke ingrediënten, niks bespoten en gezond leven.’

Bas vraagt wat ze de studenten nu al kunnen meegeven. ‘In de opleiding kun je daar meer aandacht aan geven. Je hebt hier al natuur. Ik zie voor me dat studenten dat onderhouden en erin werken. Als je met je handen in de grond zit, ervaar je wat het betekent als je gaat zaaien en er mooie producten uit­komen, zoals fruit en groente. Dat is een leerschool. Die kans heb je hier. De campus als laboratorium, met de natuur.’ Een idee dat naadloos aansluit bij de ambitie om als instituut te pionieren in verschillende gebieden.

het zijn rijksmonumenten die van de ondergang zijn gered en een nieuwe bestemming hebben gekregen. Dat is betekenisvol en duurzaam. Wat mijn vader heeft gedaan was min of meer duurzaamheid avant la lettre.’

Verbinding met de natuur Camille sr. voegt daaraan toe: ‘Ik heb de huizen gebruikt om mijn passies en interesses neer te zetten. Mijn sterke verbondenheid met de streek is ook zichtbaar in de omgeving.

Natuurgebied Ingendael, bijna 100 hectare, hebben we voor 1 gulden geschonken aan Limburgs Landschap. Als je dat gebied nu ziet?

Dat is fantastisch! We hebben het teruggegeven aan de natuur en twee jaar later waren er honderden plantensoorten terug. Dat vind ik één van de mooiste dingen die ik heb kunnen doen.’

Natuur als leerschool Het groeiende belang van ‘meaningful’ is relevant in de sector en in de strategie van de

Zo kunnen ‘roots’ op een dag heel letterlijk worden. Wat begon op de Hotelschool, groeide uit tot een levenswerk dat Limburg én de hotellerie heeft verrijkt. Camille sr. en Camille Oostwegel bewijzen dat traditie en duurzame vernieuwing hand in hand kunnen gaan, geworteld in het verleden, met vleugels naar de toekomst. Benieuwd naar het hele verhaal? 

Track Hotel Management In dit profiel worden studenten gevormd tot ‘game changers’ voor de internationale hotelwereld. De studenten specialiseren zich verder in revenu management, hotel vastgoed, luxere hotellerie en merkontwikkeling. Daarna voeren ze, in opdracht van een bedrijf uit de industrie, een strategisch adviesproject en sluiten ze af met een managementstage in een internationaal hotel, white label operator, hoteltech-bedrijf of op een HQ. Vrienden voor het leven De blijvende kracht van verbondenheid; hoe studentenvereniging Amphitryon vormt én verbindt.

Studentenvereniging Amphitryon is voor velen het kloppend hart van hun studentenleven aan de Hotel Management School Maastricht. Hier wordt niet alleen feest gevierd, maar ook karakter gevormd.

Leiderschap, samenwerking, verbondenheid.

Het zijn begrippen die er niet alleen geleerd, maar vooral geleefd worden. In het jubileumjaar van de Hotelschool kijken drie generaties alumni uit verschillende groeperingen terug op de rol die Amphitryon in hun leven speelde, en vooral: hoe die rol is blijven bestaan.

was ook de kracht binnen Amphitryon, waar destijds iedereen verplicht lid van was. Je werd serieus genomen, of je nou eerstejaars was of niet. We leerden samenwerken en bijsturen als het moest. En het belangrijkst: we hadden er lol in. We zaten geregeld aan de bar, vierden carnaval als ‘Nondesjukes’, zaten in verschillende commissies zoals de Senaat en maakten het allereerste Maastrichtse Kroegenboek.’

Die gedeelde ervaringen vormden een band die nooit is verdwenen. ‘We zijn elkaar altijd

Een halve eeuw verbonden door vriendschap Carel van Heereveld en Huub Goossens, beide [F 1975], studeerden 50 jaar geleden af aan de Hotelschool Maastricht. De vriendschap van de afgestudeerden van dat jaar is een halve eeuw later nog altijd springlevend. Dit jaar vierden zij hun 10e lustrum en keerden zij terug naar Maastricht en ‘Het Kasteel’. Een traditie die al bij het eerste lustrum in 1980 ontstond en zij met de hele jaarclub blijven volhouden. Zoals iedere keer werden ze ook dit jaar hartelijk ontvangen door het bestuur van Amphitryon, de school en het Teaching Hotel. In dit jubileumjaar was de afsluiting een bijzonder diner op Château Neercanne.

‘Gastronomie: Goed eten en drinken is een belangrijk smeermiddel in het onderhouden van onze relaties.’

‘We leerden elkaar kennen op de Hotelschool, in een tijd waarin er nog enkel mannen waren. We leefden op het kasteel, waar onze kamers, de school en met name de bar slechts op meters afstand waren’, vertelt Carel. ‘Je moest samen iets organiseren, verantwoordelijkheid nemen en zorgen dat het goed kwam.’

‘En als het niet goed kwam’, vult Huub aan, ‘dan moest je dat ook samen oplossen. Dat

blijven opzoeken en hebben belangstelling en interesse in elkaar’, zegt Huub. ‘Niet alleen als vrienden, maar ook als sparringpartners. Als er iets speelt, privé of zakelijk, dan bel ik Carel of een van de andere klasgenoten. En zij mij. Zo is dat met onze hele lichting. Bourgondiërs met een groot horecahart.’

De Funda-uitreiking was, in vergelijking met nu, klein met 35 studenten. ‘We deden heel veel samen. De praktijklessen, het vele werken buiten de Hotelschool, Amphitryon.

Dat we daarna bijna allemaal in de horeca gingen werken, maakte onze band alleen maar sterker.’

Van ‘pitje’ tot ‘tros’: Leren en vriendschap sluiten Voor Axelle de Loose [F 2022], voelt dat niet anders, al is de tijd natuurlijk veranderd. ‘Ik werd lid van Caves d’Amphitryon, de wijngeleding van de vereniging met locatie op het kasteel. Ik kwam al vaker op donderdag naar ‘de Kelder’. Vrij snel werd ik gevraagd een motivatie te schrijven om lid te worden. Ik voegde een fles uit het nabijgelegen wijngoed Genoels-Elderen toe, gevuld met water met de hoop te mogen groeien tot een mooie wijn.’

Een proeftijd volgde, waarin ze ‘pitje’ was, die uiteindelijk groeide tot ‘tros’ met een tastevin.

‘In zo’n proeftijd leren ze je wat de normen en

De vriendschappen die zij daar vormde voelen als een zelfgekozen familie: ‘framily’, zoals ze het zelf zegt. Er is begrip en respect. Het fundament van vriendschap. ‘We vieren verjaardagen, gaan naar Antwerpen voor fine dining, zoeken elkaar op voor zaken, eten een doordeweekse AVG bij elkaar, sturen kaartjes en bloemen en zijn er voor elkaar als er ‘mineur’ is.’

‘Het bijzondere aan Caves d’Amphitryon, maar ook aan Amphitryon is dat je als jonge student zo veel kan organiseren. Je draait echt mee. Je bent medeverantwoordelijk. Er is ruimte om te leren, maar je wordt ook uitgedaagd. En je leert van anderen die één, twee of drie jaar boven je

zitten. Het organiseren van de wijnreis, bijvoorbeeld, doe je allemaal samen en daarbij leer je van elkaar.’

Een netwerk van verschillende generatie Ook Barbara Kerstens [F 1999] ervaart de verbondenheid met andere lichtingen. Barbara, oud-lid van dispuut Alcmenae, beschrijft hoe die band nog steeds voelbaar is. In 1995 werd zij lid van het damesdispuut en liep zij met haar lichting H-tijd (red. de Aspirant tijd, de H is van Heracles). ‘Nog steeds hebben wij een hele hechte band. Voor leuke dingen of als het moeilijk is, zoeken we elkaar op. Een van mijn jaargenoten woont zelfs naast mij, daar is vriendschap echt familie geworden. Ook zijn er hechte contacten tussen de lichtingen en is er bewondering en respect voor elkaar. We steunen elkaar.’

Ze sprak dit jaar samen met 2 andere oudleden op de HED-talks, een variant op TED Talks voor Alcmenae’s leden en oudleden.

Jaarlijks komen meer dan honderd vrouwen van verschillende generaties samen. ‘Iedereen draagt dezelfde spijkerblouse. Dat geeft herkenning. We delen verhalen uit Maastricht, lachen, dansen, zingen ons dispuutslied en praten over serieuze thema’s als generatieverschillen of persoonlijke groei.’

Barbara’s vriendschappen van Alcmenae

reiken verder dan het persoonlijke. ‘Laatst hoorde ik een oudlid op de radio over duurzame bedrijfskleding. Ik had net schorten nodig voor mijn organisatie. Binnen een week was het geregeld.’ Ze vertelt over een ontmoeting met een jong lid dat een koffie wilde drinken om te praten over haar carrière. ‘We hadden het over werk, keuzes en vertrouwen op jezelf. Heel bijzonder.’

Als oudleden hebben we een hechte band met ‘zittend’ Alcmenae. Het oudleden bestuur ontmoet de vrouwen 2 keer per jaar in Maastricht en we steunen hen als oudledenvereniging financieel. We zien elkaar op verschillende evenementen en vieren ieder jaar in november ‘onze’ verjaardag. Voor vragen over Maastricht, stage, carrière of persoonlijke vragen, kunnen ze bij ons terecht.’

Levenslessen en vriendschap voor het leven Wat ze alle vier delen, is de overtuiging dat Amphitryon méér is dan een studentenvereniging. Het is een levensschool. ‘Ik heb daar geleerd wat verantwoordelijkheid is,’ zegt Axelle. ‘En wat vriendschap betekent.’

‘Het is als een speeltuin van de Hotelschool,’ zegt Barbara. ‘Daar waar je van alles kan proberen, terwijl je ook kunt vallen. De landing is zacht.’ ’We hebben het meest geleerd van de dingen die niet persé aan de

lessen gekoppeld waren’, zeggen Carel en Huub, ‘het was een geweldige tijd.’

‘De kernwaarden van een hotello: ‘initiatief, samenwerking en vriendschap die zitten in elke generatie’. Daarom herkennen we ons in elkaar, ook al zijn we decennia van elkaar verwijderd. Die kruisbestuiving tussen jaargenoten en verticale lichtingen maakt Amphitryon krachtig. ‘Je voelt dat je niet alleen bent’, zegt Axelle. ‘Er zijn mensen die hetzelfde hebben meegemaakt, die hetzelfde denken en die je begrijpen en willen helpen. Of dat nu oudleden zijn uit 1975, 1999 of 2022, je voelt het in je vezels.’

Amphitryon is voor velen de rode draad die alumni van alle leeftijden verbindt. ‘We kwamen daar voor een opleiding. Maar we kregen een leven vol vriendschap en verhalen erbij. Wat wil je nog meer?’ 

In het jaar dat de Hotelschool Maastricht haar 75-jarig bestaan viert, is Amphitryon misschien wel het mooiste bewijs van duurzame verbinding. Wat begint met een commissie of baravond, groeit uit tot een netwerk dat decennia overstijgt. Een

15 Studentenvereniging Amphitryon Voor veel alumni is de tijd op Hotel Management School Maastricht sterk gekoppeld aan de tijd bij Studentenvereniging Amphitryon. Beide partijen, onlosmakelijk verbonden aan elkaar, een unieke samenwerking sinds 1951.

Wanneer je praat met je lichtings-, jaarclub- of dispuutsgenoten, of andere mensen die je in de loop der jaren hebt leren kennen, merk je al snel dat er veel herinneringen zijn om op terug te kijken. Vaak zijn het gesprekken vol verhalen en anekdotes, ontstaan uit gedeelde ervaringen en vriendschappen voor het leven.

Als je er wat langer bij stilstaat, zie je dat Amphitryon meer heeft betekend dan alleen de feestjes. Het komt misschien niet altijd ter sprake, maar het heeft wel degelijk invloed gehad op wie we zijn geworden. Of je nu lid was in 1951 of net je Funda hebt gehaald, we delen iets gemeenschappelijks.

Tijdens het lidmaatschap bij Amphitryon maken we allemaal een ontwikkeling door, op verschillende gebieden. We hebben onze sociale vaardigheden verder kunnen ontwikkelen en zijn als persoon gegroeid. Door samen te wonen en veel tijd met elkaar door te brengen, ontstaat er een stevige sociale basis.

Daarnaast kregen we de kans om al op jonge

leeftijd verantwoordelijkheid te dragen. Denk aan het draaien van een bar, het organiseren van een evenement, het beheren van financiën of het doen van een bestuursjaar. Ook hebben we hier een netwerk opgebouwd waar we later, zowel privé als professioneel, profijt van kunnen hebben.

Om dit in beeld te brengen hebben wij een video gemaakt waarin we diverse oudleden hebben geïnterviewd over hun tijd bij Amphitryon, en hen hebben gevraagd naar de toegevoegde waarde die het ze heeft gebracht.

Social Deal An unmissable story

The entrepreneurial story of Social Deal reads like a modern boy’s adventure tale, with a strong ‘from paperboy to millionaire’ vibe. Or, as their company slogan puts it: ‘an unmissable story.’

Rens van den Berg and Bart Oosterholt (both [F 2010]) got to really know each other during an internship in South Africa. In an effort to boost their modest internship allowance, they began playing roulette at the casino, using a fixed system — and with some initial success. One morning, luck seemed to be on their side: a positive balance of € 4.000. Until a cruel twist of fate changed everything. The roulette ball landed on red, fourteen times in a row, and their profit vanished, like snow under the Swaziland sun.

With the last bits of change they could find in their car, they managed to buy themselves a simple lunch. Sitting at the table, one thing became clear: relying on luck wasn’t going to cut it. It’s time to take control, time to start their own business. Ideas? Plenty.

From a DVD rental system to a scheduling tool for driving schools. But the real spark doesn’t come until Rens, working as a dishwasher at a local restaurant, overhears a conversation about a new American concept: Groupon. An attractive online concept for restaurant owners looking to fill tables: they only pay for actual bookings and get new guests in return. Intrigued, Rens pitches the idea to a restaurant owner in Maastricht... and gets an immediate yes. In nothing more than a student room, with no name, no logo, no website, Social Deal was born.

System-oriented + People-focused = The ultimate dream team In that tiny student room, it doesn’t take long to realise where each of their qualities shines through. Bart, the people person, building relationships with restaurant owners. Rens, the systems guy developing the entire software platform from scratch.

From the very beginning, their partnership is built on complementary strengths and deep trust. They don’t get in each other’s way — they bring out the best in each other.

As they put it themselves, quite perfectly: ‘Bart makes sure today is a good day. Rens makes sure tomorrow will be too.’

ALUMNI CAREER Dancing on the couch Making every day a good day doesn’t happen by itself. In the early years, Bart and Rens are working around the clock. They move to Lanaken because the rent is cheaper, and they live off spaghetti with ketchup. It takes six months before their first deal finally goes live at restaurant ‘O’. Regional broadcaster L1 is following their every move. After a sleepless night full of technical hiccups, they stand nervously outside the restaurant in Maastricht while the website goes live. First 11 reservations... eventually 130. The owner is thrilled, guests are excited, and the two founders are proud.

At first, they launch just one deal a day, only in the Maastricht region. That makes their model fragile: no sales means no revenue.

The turning point comes with their first dinner deal — 400 sold in a single day. They are literally dancing on the couch. For the first time they realize: this could be something big.

Entrepreneurship is no straight line Rens and Bart quickly learn that building a business is anything but a straight path from A to B. At first, their idea is to launch under a different name in each city, like Domstad Deal or Lichtstad Deals. However, from a branding perspective, that turns out to be untenable. One strong, consistent brand all across the country would be far more powerful. There’s just one problem: they use the name Social Deal in Maastricht exclusively. Letting go of that localized strategy feels risky. They do decide to take the leap.

The reaction? Mainly positive. For restaurant owners, it doesn’t really matter where a guest comes from as long as that empty table gets filled. Choosing a single brand name brings clarity and focus. At the same time, the local touch is preserved: every city has its own dedicated account manager from the region. Someone who knows the hospitality scene inside out, feels personally responsible, and knows exactly how to connect with the best local businesses.

The strategy is clear: first become the local market leader, and only then expand to the next city — usually within a 50 km radius.

The account manager from that city helps kick-start the next location. Driving an hour

once in a while is fine, but doing that daily?

Not ideal. As the platform grows, so does the offer. It’s no longer just about restaurants — now it’s wellness, workshops, specialty shops, even sports. The result: local entrepreneurship, rolled out nationwide.

Hanging by a thread What started as one deal a day quickly turned into multiple deals per city. Business owners want to stay online longer, and customers are asking for more payment options. At the same time, new team members are onboarded remotely, while systems, teams, and office space must all keep up with the rapid growth.

They realize that Maastricht isn’t a centrally located at all. They decide it is time to relocate.

Den Bosch seems the perfect spot: full of character, rich in Burgundian charm, and packed with restaurants – but too expensive. So they settle for a house in nearby Rosmalen. Working upstairs, living downstairs. For the first time, there’s a physical separation between work and private life.

There’s just one problem: the internet is terrible. A cable has to be run along the outside of the house, from the utility cupboard all the way up to the attic. The legendary line from that time? ‘Don’t slam the door too hard – Social Deal is hanging by a thread…’

We’ve been there During a meeting with their accountant, Bart and Rens decide to finance the new office fully out of their own pockets. After all, what could possibly go wrong? The entire revenue stream would have to stop overnight for things to get tricky.

And that’s exactly what happens when COVID hits. In fact, revenue doesn’t just stop – it goes negative. Thousands of euros

Social Deal is a Dutch online discount platform founded by Bart Oosterholt [F 2010] and Rens van den Berg [F 2010] in 2011 in Maastricht. The platform offers daily deals with discounts on restaurants and cafés, as well as leisure trips and experiences such as theme parks, museums, overnight stays, and much more. Today, Social Deal reaches millions of users across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France, and collaborates with tens of thousands of local and larger partners.

In the Horizons in Hospitality minor, students analyze and define the ‘Why, How, and What’ to enhance hospitality in organizational practices, focusing on areas like guest and employee journeys. Meanwhile, the new Leading People and Culture in a Changing World minor provides an in-depth, co-creative approach to understanding People, Culture, and Leadership, emphasizing hospitality, technology, diversity, and sustainability.

in cancellations pour in each day, while millions have already been paid out to entre­preneurs for reserved vouchers. Guests only had to show up, right?

A crisis team is formed, and the entre­preneu­ rial spirit kicks in immediately. One restaurant owner wants to turn to take-away. With a rendang set menu, the very first ‘corona deal’ goes live – and the deal is ordered 5.000 times. Social Deal temporarily turns into Social Dealivery. They buy a refrigerated van, paint it blue, and personally drive to Michelin-starred restaurants to pick up dinner boxes. In parking lots in Breda and Antwerp, thousands of customers wait to collect their dinners. No money was made, but it became a remarkable chapter in their entrepreneurial journey.

Deal quickly receives around 1,500 applications each month. Working at Social Deal doesn’t feel like just a job — it feels like joining a family, with Bart and Rens as the modern-day patres familias.

Yin & Yang in business Do these now-seasoned entrepreneurs have any advice for today’s students and future founders? Absolutely. Above all, they’re grateful they took on this adventure together.

When one of them hits a rough patch, the other pulls him through. That only works when you’re each other’s opposite – and they are. Looking back, personality tests revealed they sit at completely opposite ends of the spectrum, but that contrast has only made their partnership stronger.

A company we’d want to be a part of ourselves

The future

Behind the idea that entrepreneurship should be enjoyable, not only for the founders, but also for their employees lies a clear vision: ‘We wanted to create a company where we ourselves would love to work.’ That’s why, every day in their beautiful office, there’s a good lunch, excellent coffee, and — unmistakably inspired by their time at the Hotel School — the occasional unforgettable party.

These parties are legendary: from four days of catamaran sailing in Croatia to a full Social Deal Winterhouse in the snow. Not just as a thank-you, but also to strengthen loyalty and connection. Work hard, play hard.

After a trip like that, the office buzzes with positive energy for weeks. The after movies do their job when it comes to recruitment: who wouldn’t want to work for a company like this? It’s no coincidence that Social Deal has been named Employer of the Year twice. Social

At first, the idea was to work hard for two years and then sell the company.Nearly fifteen years later, that vision completely changed. The new goal? ‘To become the leading online platform for leisure activities in Europe.’

Recently, they took a stake in the market leader in Norway and Sweden. Today, Social Deal operates in six countries and accepts payments in three different currencies.

They see especially strong growth potential in France and Germany. However, their growth strategy remains unchanged: step by step, city by city, but just a little faster than fifteen years ago. Social Deal is far from finished. With a smile, they add, ‘You can always tell by our faces whether it’s been a good day for Social Deal.’ As they say it, there’s no doubt at all: for Bart and Rens, it’s been a fantastic day for the past fifteen years. 

COLUMN

Let’s catch up with Beatrice Bonioli The Italian Beatrice Bonioli [F 2018] was drawn to the atmosphere at HMSM, so she started her journey in the English bachelor in 2014. Now she works as a Partner at SCM Executives and is responsible for setting their new public sector practice from the ground up working with clients like ProRail, Schiphol.

How did you end up in your first job?

I did my management internship in the Event Sales department at the Hyatt Regency in Amsterdam. Since there were no opportunities to stay on afterward, I applied at Zoku Amsterdam and eventually started as an Events Supervisor. I had originally applied for a different position, but a fellow HMSM student who was already working there connected me with the Events team, and that led to the switch.

What is your best memory of your study at HMSM?

Hard to pick just one—but I’d say my internship in Dubai stands out. I learned a lot, worked with people from all kinds of cultural backgrounds, and handled a wide range of stakeholders. I also celebrated my 21st birthday there with a great party surrounded by my colleagues, which made it even more memorable.

I was a Young Blood Leader during the Boostcamp and also served as an Inkom Mama. I really enjoyed both roles, as they gave me the opportunity to meet new students and support them during their first days and weeks.

What is the most important skill you have gained at HMSM?

For me, it’s the ability to navigate complex environments and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Whether in operations or in strategic discussions, learning to listen, adapt, and find common ground has been invaluable. It’s a core strength in my current work in executive recruitment, where understanding people and building trust is important

Why did you choose HMSM in Maastricht?

I had wanted to study abroad since I was 11 (not exactly my parents’ dream at the time). When I first visited the Netherlands during high school, I connected with it—no, not because of the weather. I couldn’t attend an open day, so I visited HMSM on a regular day in January. I had lunch at L’Étoile with my parents and was immediately drawn to the atmosphere.

We spoke to some students working there and walked around the campus. The combination of the environment and international opportunities really won me over.

Why did you stay in the Netherlands after graduation?

I decided to stay in the Netherlands because it really feels like home. I moved here when I was 19, got used to the Dutch way of doing things, started working, made great friends, and somewhere along the way, I also picked up a Dutch boyfriend. I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon.

What is the role of HMSM in your life?

It represents a very special time in my life, one I look back on with a lot of fondness.

I built lasting friendships and had experiences that still mean a lot to me today.

New funds, more opportunities Foundation HMSM proudly announces three new scholarships and funding opportunities to broaden the group of students who can benefit from our funds for studying and growing at HMSM.

If it is your dream to develop yourself in the hospitality industry, a lack of funds should not hold you back from realising your ambition.

With three new funds we want to broaden our scope and give financial support to new and current students at different stages of their academic journey to help them succeed and grow.

An important addition is not only the support for new students, but also for our current students.

Especially those who are ambitious and eager to go beyond the standard curriculum. Students who are looking for more: more opportunities, more challenges, more space to develop their talents. We want to provide the financial support to make sure that this is accessible to everyone.

The Extra Mile Fund (for current students) As an alumnus you know that your leadership skills, connections and personality have developed beyond the classroom. This fund enables students to create and participate in extra-curricular group activities that challenge, inspire, and connect. Fourth-year student Amy Keulen participated in the Excellence Programme in 2024 and later served as an External Coordinator for two editions. ‘This experience didn’t just boost my organizational skills; it also gave me confidence.’

Entrepreneur Fund (for current students) Our students are full of bold ideas. They see possibilities where others see limits. In our curriculum, we challenge them to think creatively and explore innovative solutions to real-world problems. Some of their ideas have the potential to grow and could turn into a

business. With the support of our alumni community, we can help the next generation of entrepreneurs turn their ideas into life.

Mieke Pelzer, coordinator of the minor New Business sees this as a valuable stimulus for pioneering and entrepreneurship: ‘With funding, mentorship, and access to the alumni network, we don’t just teach and inspire our students in the minor New Business to think like entrepreneurs, we support them to become entrepreneurs’.

First Generation Fund (for prospective students) With the First Generation Fund we focus on students who are the first in their family to attend higher education and for whom (financial) support isn’t a given. With this fund, we want to encourage first-generation students to choose HMSM and help them make a strong start in their first year.

For many of these young people, the transition to campus life is not just about academic challenges. Alumna Samira Haji-Akaiouar [F 2017], now a policy officer at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, shares her perspective: ‘As the first in my family to go and study, HMSM felt like an unfamiliar world and a leap into the unknown. A First Generation scholarship would have given me financial relief and, more importantly, the feeling of being seen and supported, that my place at HMSM truly mattered. That kind of recognition builds confidence, especially when everything is new.’

Make a difference where it matters the most Global Talent Fund (for prospective students) With this established fund, we continue to support international students, as they bring diversity to our student body. According to Nuffic, many non-EU students remain in the Netherlands after graduation, contributing to the local economy and our industry. By supporting non-European students, we help shape the future of our industry and give young talent a life-changing opportunity.

Creating opportunities together These scholarships and grants but the scholarships and grants can only be awarded when resources within the funds are available. Suzanne Laszlo [F 1991], director of Unicef Netherlands and chair of the Advisory Board of Foundation HMSM: ‘The foundation is going through a wonderful development, and it’s heartwarming to see how alumni and partners are committing themselves with such dedication.

Together, we make sure that the unique experience and education we had ourselves, becomes accessible to others as well.’

These new funds are more than just financial support; they reflect the close-knit community where we lift each other up and create opportunities for others to thrive. You once walked on the campus of HMSM. You know how life-changing that experience can be. Now, you can be part

of why someone else getting that same opportunity.

Suzanne Laszlo agrees: ‘With the introduction of the new scholarships, Foundation HMSM is taking an important step: not only are we creating new opportunities for talented students, but we are also giving you the chance to choose where you want to make a difference consciously. Together, we are building a community that shares opportunities, supports talent, and amplifies impact. I sincerely hope this initiative will inspire even more people to join in and help make this unique opportunity a reality.’

From Limburg soil to global brands Two alumni shaping the future of food

One chose a path through multinational corporations, while the other rooted his work in local soil. Both reshaping the future of food. Together, Esther Crum [F 2017], Media Lead Foods & Lipton at Unilever, and Casper Nieboer [F 2024], co-founder of Harvest Hub and the innovative Lubosch Land food forest, embody the diverse and inspiring ways alumni are reshaping the future of food, from local fields to international tables.

Two pathways into food Esther began her professional journey with a marketing internship at Coca-Cola.

Reflecting on that experience, she shared, ‘I think with a bit of luck I started doing something I liked, but I wasn’t ready to work yet, so I went on to study for a master’s in Business Administration.’ After finishing her studies, she joined Unilever in 2019 with the help of a fellow HMSM year club member who was working at Randstad at the time. ‘I started in the global ice cream team and worked on brands like Ola and Cornetto. I really enjoyed collaborating with colleagues from different countries.’

Since the start of this year, Esther has been working as Media Manager for Foods & Lipton, focusing on developing campaigns and selecting the most effective media strategies for reaching target audiences.

‘Media is changing rapidly, so we need to make choices that balance reach, relevance, and of course, the message we want to deliver.’

Casper took a different approach. After completing his management internship in the United States, he returned home and looked for ways to contribute to the family business. Together with his sister Laura, he runs Harvest Hub, a good food café and catering concept, as well as Lubosch Land, their pioneering nature inclusive farm with food forest in Limburg. ‘We transformed a former dairy farm into a five-hectare food forest and market garden with a production kitchen, meeting rooms, and a farm shop.’

What began with a Christmas meal box quickly evolved. A webshop and catering services followed, and eventually the organic food café in Maastricht. He explains, ‘We want to prove that it works on a larger scale, because this will ensure our business is financially sustainable.’

Sustainability as a starting point Casper and Laura place sustainability at the heart of everything they do. ‘It’s about the whole system,’ Laura said. ‘Working with local farmers, preventing waste, composting, and involving the community.’ Their good food café encourages guests to try plantbased eating, with the option to add meat for an additional charge — a concept that aligns with their commitment to sustainability.

Esther also sees sustainability as one of the motivators in her career. The belief that companies should contribute positively to society played a major role in her decision to join Unilever. She noted that under former CEO Paul Polman, sustainability goals were ambitious, though often broad.

‘Nowadays, we work with fewer goals, but they are more specific and measurable, which helps us create more impact.’ One example is the reduction of salt in Unilever’s products. ‘It’s a balancing act,’ she explains. ‘Products still need to be delicious, or consumers won’t buy them.’

Making healthy food accessible Both alumni are committed to improving access to nutritious food, though in different ways. At Knorr, Esther helped develop wraps made with 35 percent vegetables and partnered with Wageningen University on a school programme that encourages children to cook with vegetables. ‘That programme really meant something to me,’ she said. ‘It gave children a chance to try foods they would not eat at home.’

Casper and Laura approach accessibility through smart scaling. ‘We can make a bigger impact if we scale our production.’

prices accessible.’ Their seasonal menu also supports this approach. Laura added, ‘You cannot buy tomatoes in winter at the same price as in summer. So instead, we highlight winter vegetables like cabbage or root vegetables.’

Innovation in different forms Esther has experienced firsthand how marketing strategies must evolve. While working with Knorr, she helped launch the brand’s TikTok channel, aiming to connect with a younger audience that mostly knew Knorr through their parents. ‘By working with influencers and following trends, we managed to connect with a younger audience. More than ten of our videos went viral with over a million views,’ she recalled.

In her current role, she collaborates with media agencies and brand teams to determine the best media mix for each campaign.

‘There is so much happening in social media that it’s important to be flexible.’

Casper and Laura focus their innovation on operational processes. Their supplier network is diverse, with each supplier using different systems. To manage this, they rely on AI tools to track availability and pricing. ‘It helps us avoid overpaying

adjustment, especially coming from the more direct Dutch communication style.

I had to learn how to communicate differently.’ She also learned to manage her work-life balance better. ‘In the beginning, it was tough. In some cultures, working until 8 p.m. is the norm. Over time, I became more confident in setting boundaries.’

When they noticed that rice was often left uneaten, they adjusted portion sizes and began repurposing leftovers. Laura emphasizes the team’s approach to learning and growth: ‘If something goes wrong, our first question is always: what did we do?

For Casper, the biggest lessons came from trial and error. ‘We try things. We can respond quickly and adapt.’ Casper experienced the opposite during his management internship in a large American hotel. ‘There, change was basically impossible,’ he said. ‘Everything had to be approved by the union.’ In contrast, the flexibility he experiences running his own business has been liberating.

Shared roots, different wings Both alumni reflect fondly on their time at HMSM. Esther highlighted how living independently from the start helped build resilience and self-reliance. ‘I think it really starts with moving out on your own right away, which quickly makes you independent.’ Casper emphasized the power of the campus experience. ‘You live together, work together, learn together. It is where you really grow up.’ Laura added that she witnessed this transformation firsthand.

‘I’ve seen Casper grow professionally and personally during his time at HMSM. The way he works now reflects those lessons.’

Esther believes that her practical mindset and ability to take initiative, both developed at HMSM, continue to benefit her daily work. Casper shares a similarly grounded perspective: ‘Stay curious. And if something doesn’t work, adjust it and move on.’

Although their paths are very different, Esther and Casper are united by a common foundation and a shared mission to improve the food system with vision, responsibility, and a strong sense of purpose. 

Just graduated Sebas Vis [F 2025] Influencer en foodvlogger

Sebas Vis startte 1,5 jaar geleden met zijn zus LekkerSeb - een foodchannel op Instagram en TikTok met lekkere recepten, smaaktests en foodhacks.

Inmiddels hebben ze een samenwerking met Albert Heijn en bijna 50K volgers en 1,7 miljoen weergaven per maand.

‘Ik ben de hele dag met eten bezig, en dat zit er al sinds jongs af aan in. We moesten thuis alles proeven van onze ouders voordat we mochten zeggen dat we iets niet lustten. Tegenwoordig maak ik me na het ontbijt al meteen druk over de lunch en vervolgens over het avondeten. Ik vind het ook een beetje verdacht als mensen niet van lekker eten houden, maar die mensen zie je op de Hotelschool gelukkig erg weinig.

Ik ben tijdens de laatste 2 jaar van de Hotelschool begonnen met social media content maken, omdat ik dat gewoon heel leuk vond.

Na mijn afstuderen vond ik het lastig om dit te combineren met werken. Door de betaalde online samenwerkingen met merken en bedrijven, ontstond er ruimte om te kiezen voor fulltime content creation. En nu doe ik nu dus elke dag wat ik leuk vind!

Bij de marketingvakken op HMSM wordt het vak en de rol van influencers nauwelijks benoemd, terwijl het vandaag de dag bijna de grootste vorm van marketing is, waar veel bedrijven gebruik van maken en ook flink voor betalen. Ondanks dat dit meer aandacht mag krijgen in het curriculum, zitten studenten veel op social media dus denk ik dat ze dat in de praktijk wel ervaren en leren.

Hoe belangrijk zijn influencers?

‘Goede vraag!

Kort antwoord: niet belangrijk. Lang antwoord: Ik vind het belangrijk dat er een realistisch beeld wordt weergegeven op social media. Ik denk dat veel onzekerheden en problemen voortkomen uit alle perfecte plaatjes die je op social media ziet. Daarom wil ik echte beelden en verhalen delen, en niet alleen de perfecte kant.

Het waardevolste advies wat ik ooit heb gekregen, was: ‘Blijf vooral doen wat je leuk vindt, daar ben je goed in.’ Dit klinkt misschien simpel, maar ik denk dat dit de basis is voor een succesvolle carrière. Ik vind het ook geweldig om dit terug te zien bij andere alumni die vol passie over hun vak en loopbaan vertellen. Ik houd ervan als mensen enthousiast zijn en ik geloof erin dat dit je heel ver kan brengen. Voor de toekomst focus ik me op LekkerSeb! Tot er iets anders op mijn pad komt of er nieuwe ideeën komen. Ik sluit absoluut niet uit dat ik naast dit nog iets anders ga ondernemen!’

Playing catch-up with technology Educating future game changers

26 This article will likely already be outdated by the time you read it, as it is written before the summer break. It depicts a snapshot of how the Hotel School keeps up with technologydevelopments in education and research.

Today, tech changes seem to go faster than a teacher can teach. Not only educators might struggle, also the hospitality industry is challenged to manage tech in the service process. How does HMSM deal with all these changes?

From microwave to ChatGPT If 75 years ago ‘Technology in Hospitality Education’ would have been the topic, it would probably be about the wonders of a modern kitchen tool like the microwave oven. It would have been an inspiring example for an ambitious Hotel School, that just took off. But today, the buzzword has shifted to Generative Artificial Intelligence, or GenAI. The moment ChatGPT hit

the market in 2022, its impact became clear. The American Writers Guild went on strike, the Turing test was dusted off and pop artists went to court to take fake songs with ‘their voices’ off the market. Another challenge, for an educational program that looks back at 75 inspirational years but also looks forward. That challenge is being picked up, with a strong focus on the ‘next step’. HMSM is pushing the limits of the international hospitality business towards innovation and sustainable business practices and turns students into game changers.

In her L1-Radio interview on June 29, HMSM colleague and professor at research centre Global Minds at Work, Ankie Hoefnagels, compared developments in GenAI to playing music. It took decades to move from vinyl to cassette-tape to CD-ROM to streaming services. We experience similar radical changes in AI, but this time they happen within months. No wonder that we are all challenged to catch up on our AI-savviness.

EDUCATION

Next to the GenAI-sprint, tech is manifest in data-analytics, in robotics and in Extended Reality (XR). To a certain extent, data analytics have already been integrated in hospitality education. There are initiatives on the other topics at our institute too.

Immersive experiences in a lab

For the robot technology part, Kimberley is cooperating with colleague Sander Jansen, lecturer marketing, who has built expertise working with AI. He keeps ‘Pepper’ in good condition, co-organized the AI-update course for lecturers at HMSM and helps to integrate AI-technology in education. A nice example is the series of short self-study videos in Module 3, all created with AI and presented by an avatar. These videos demand no recording time, are easy to produce, are appreciated by the students, and can be quickly adapted to new content. The saved time can be used for other, specific teaching sessions. Have a look at this example by scanning the QR code.

About four and a half years ago, Danny Han, professor of research centre Future of Food, initiated the Food Experience Lab. It offers the students an immersive experience, created with five short-throw projectors and a high-tech software program. In the projected virtual environment, people can undergo multi-sensory experiments. In order to use immersive technology to influence and experiment on food experiences, VR glasses would hinder an important aspect: the social structure, a very important component of dining together. By projecting on the walls and the table, social interaction between participants can be maintained.

Over the past years, this lab has been used as a playground for research and education.

Constructing it has been a continuous process of pushing the boundaries in cooperation with many industry partners.

Is Pepper joking?

Together with colleague Kimberley van der Heijden, Danny Han recently wrote a chapter of a book that will soon be published. The chapter offers insights into the consequences of interaction between humans and robots in the service process.

Kimberley is specialized in customer behaviour. She does interaction research with the friendly looking service robot ‘Pepper’. After some online studies, she now focuses on the effect of Pepper showing a certain type of personality. How will humans for instance react to Pepper making a joke? The plan is to position Pepper at the entrance of the educational building. Programmed by Kimberley, and supported by the latest version of ChatGPT, Pepper could help students and visitors finding their way, and at the same time friendly address passing students on how well they live up to the dress code at school. AI-savviness is not only necessary for lecturers, it is essential for students too. A recent study in Technological Forecasting & Social Change indicates that employers increasingly prefer graduates who are skilled in AI and sustainability.

One can imagine that all of this also requires a sturdy rethinking of the way students are assessed. The first consequences can already be found in the redesign of elements in the curriculum, where students are graded on their live reflection on the products they have made, instead of grading their products.

Two way interaction via MetaStage In June this year, Danny Han hosted the 10th International XR Metaverse Conference in Maastricht, together with University of Maastricht, Manchester Metropolitan University, IAITI, ETT and DEXLab. Some 200 international experts, both academics and representatives of the industry, gathered to discuss the latest in immersive technology. Much of it can today be found in the Food Experience Lab. The lab has been redesigned into a MetaStage. To further improve the immersive experience in the lab, the projected environment had to evolve from a pre-scripted into a truly interactive environment, supported by AI. The multi-sensory environment moved to multi-social, where the experience is co-created by virtual humans around you. Example: a training situation for a live presentation in front of an

audience. The projected virtual people in the audience will react to the presenter, thus offering a response that illustrates the effect of the presentation. This offers plenty of research opportunities, but also a very versatile educational set-up.

All of this to support the educational vision, as explained by Danny: ‘When we want to prepare our students to be capable to respond to the complexity of the world of tomorrow, we need to offer them a playground, that not only stimulates knowledge gathering via books, but we need to allow students to experiment here, to try different things, challenge the status quo and experiment with various perspectives, to develop a mindset to create a next step towards a better world.’

Excellence Programme At HMSM, we know that real leadership is developed outside of the classroom. Since 2019 we offer the Excellence Programme for ambitious students, a programme by and for students. This extracurricular activity gives students more opportunities to take an additional step beyond the regular curriculum. They can experience the hotel industry like no other and grow as a person. A lot of alumni support the programme by giving guest lectures, hosting field trips and giving the students the opportunity to connect with the industry and build their network.

The Extra Mile As of the third year, students from the Excellence Programme are able to participate in international hotel school competitions like the EM Cup and Sustainable Hospitality Challenge (SHC).

In March, students Juliëtte van der Ham and Emily Neelen represented HMSM at the Young Hospitality Summit (YHS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. They achieved an impressive second place with their Local Venezia concept; an innovative solution optimising travel and local regulations to benefit the community.

With over two decades of international experience, Simon Neggers [F 2004] has built a distinguished career at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and luxury hospitality. From a childhood fascination with grand hotels on the French Riviera to his current role as Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Communications at Oetker Hotels, one of the world’s most prestigious hotel groups, his journey reflects bold choices, a passion for storytelling, and a lifelong love of beauty and excellence.

‘ There’s never been a better time to start a career in hotel management.’

Where did your love of high-end hospitality begin?

‘My first real memory of the luxury hotel world was a trip to the South of France with my parents.

I must have been twelve years old, and we went to Cannes. I saw these extraordinary grand hotels on the Croisette, like the Carlton and the Martinez. I remember walking into these properties just to see the lobbies and was enamored by this idea of the luxury hospitality industry. I suppose I had an affinity for beautiful things early on, which was actually one of the reasons that I ended up going to the hotel school. I liked the idea of entertaining, of bringing people together in social settings and I liked to make things look pretty from an early age.

It is funny, because now one of our most emblematic hotels in the hotel group that I oversee is Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes.

So I guess things have come full circle!’

After graduating from HMSM, you made a bold move to New York.

What inspired that leap?

‘After graduation, I was accepted into Starwood’s Vita Futura program. Its tag line was: ‘Design your own destiny’, and that is literally

what I did. Thanks to HMSM, I had already done internships in Thailand (Bangkok/Hua Hin) and Washington DC, both of which taught me about resilience and adaptability.

I believed I could handle anything with the right intention, energy, and a bit of self-confidence. I landed in New York in 2005, had to find an apartment within a week, and vividly remember sitting in an internet café near Times Square, scrolling listings on Craigslist (Red. online classifieds advertisement platform for housing, jobs, secondhand items, and much more). It was intense and feels like another era—but it taught me a lot about navigating new territory and learning to quickly assess people and their intentions.’

How did you end up focusing on marketing communications and PR in an industry that’s often more operations-driven?

‘It started with my internship in Thailand.

The female owner of a small hotel group called Aleenta asked me to help publicize her properties, and I discovered a passion for storytelling and brand building. Later, at Starwood, I worked as a maitre d’étage at St. Regis, where we launched the then-innovative “e-butler” concept. That’s how I met the hotel’s press director. When she needed a new assistant, I got the job. That was the real beginning of my PR journey. Over time, I’ve had four remarkable female mentors who’ve shaped my career—I’m still closely in touch with all of them.’

What prompted your return to Europe after reaching such a high level in the US? ‘In 2019, my partner and I began discussing a move back to Europe. I was looking for a role in a more intimate, ultra-luxury environment—somewhere with fewer layers, where creativity could thrive, and things could get done quickly. Joining Oetker Hotels offered just that. Their portfolio includes legendary hotels, and the chance to expand into the commercial side of the business excited me. I also missed what I call a ‘European sensibility‘— attention to detail, craftsmanship, and heritage you find in family-run businesses in Paris or London. And after more than a decade in the US, being closer to friends and family played a big role too.‘

You’ve worked all over the world with a truly international clientele.

Do you still feel Dutch?

‘Absolutely. I think my Dutch side shows in how I stay rational and not overly emotional in business situations, especially when things go wrong or pressure builds. It has helped me, especially in combination with my passion for creativity. For me, after 20 years abroad, I’d say it’s ‘Dutchness‘ as part of a broader global mindset.

What’s your advice for today’s HMSM graduates?

‘There’s never been a better time to start a career in hotel management. Luxury travel, fine dining, and wellness are all booming, and “haute hospitality” is surely here to stay.

If you’re passionate, curious, and willing to adapt, there’s so many opportunities. It’s an exciting time to help shape the future of this industry. And do travel the world… You can always return to the safety of home.’ 

Geworteld in de horeca, geschoold voor de toekomst

De horecawortels van de familie De Marco gaan terug tot 1938. In het familiebedrijf groeiden Elisa, Anna en Rosa op. Na school gingen ze niet naar huis, maar naar de zaak – tussen de gasten, in de keuken, aan een tafeltje met huiswerk. Horeca was geen keuze, het was een vanzelfsprekend onderdeel van hun dagelijks leven en dus kozen alle drie de zussen voor Hotel Management School Maastricht.

‘Moet je ons meemaken als wij met z’n allen met aanhang en kids uit eten gaan’, lacht Elisa. ‘We zijn met veel en nogal temperamentvol, en je ziet de andere gasten denken: wie hoort er in godsnaam bij wie?’

Even uitleggen: Vader Bortolino en moeder Hanneke hebben samen dochters Anna en Rosa. Bortolino had eerder al dochter Elisa en zoon Alessandro. Het is opa Mario De Marco die in 1938 een ijssalon opent in Oss. Die ging over naar Bortolino en later naar Alessandro. Drie generaties in de ijssalon. In 2008 starten Hanneke en Bortolino Italiaans restaurant Amici, ook in Oss. Een paar jaar geleden slaat het noodlot toe: beide ouders worden ziek. Bortolino overlijdt op 31 augustus in 2021 en Hanneke ruim een jaar later. Alessandro neemt dan ook het restaurant over.

Horecakinderen met ondernemersbloed Het mag duidelijk zijn. De roots van de drie zussen liggen in die van een typisch Italiaanse ijsfamilie. Een hechte,

veerkrachtige familie met ondernemersbloed. Harde werkers. Maar ook liefdevol naar en vol trots op elkaar. ‘Wij zijn échte horecakinderen’, zegt Elisa. Anna beaamt dat: ‘Voor en na school waren we niet op ons thuisadres, maar in het restaurant.

Gingen wij naar huis, dan gingen we naar de zaak. Zwierven wat rond in de keuken of zaten huiswerk te maken aan een tafeltje.

Altijd onder de mensen, tussen de gasten.’

Daar word je best sociaal van, denken de zussen. ‘Als kind dachten we soms, wow, dat komt wel heel dichtbij. Het leek wel alsof de gasten zich soms onderdeel van ons gezin voelden. Ondertussen leer je spelenderwijs hoe verschillend mensen zijn, leer je makkelijker aanvoelen wat je kunt bespreken en op welke manier. Daarbij zagen wij non-stop hoe enorm charismatisch onze ouders waren en de kunst verstonden om mensen zich thuis te laten voelen. Toppunt van gastvrijheid.’

Maastrichtse vibes De hospitality genen zijn in de jeugd van de zussen flink opgeschud. Een studie aan een hotelschool lag voor de hand. Ze hadden zich alle drie ook aangemeld in Den Haag, maar Maastricht gaf toch een fijner gevoel.

‘De goede naam van de school, kleinschalig onderwijs, veel persoonlijke aandacht en het campusleven. Met een Funda kun je zoveel kanten op. En dan de stad zelf, met de bourgondische levensstijl en de vele restaurantjes.’ Elisa heeft na haar Funda nog een master Internationale Betrekkingen afgerond aan de UvA. ‘Toch is bij al mijn sollicitaties juist het hotelschooldiploma op mijn cv doorslaggevend geweest.’

Connecties ‘Wat hebben ze tot nu toe geleerd op de hotelschool? Connecties maken!’, zeggen Elisa en Anna volmondig. ‘Je leert er verbinding maken met mensen. Wat onze ouders ons ook al voordeden. Mét verbinding zijn gesprekken vloeibaarder en krijg je meer voor elkaar.’ Anna: ‘Dat zag ik ook tijdens mijn stage bij Baoase Luxury Resort op Curaçao, heel belangrijk om eerst een vertrouwensband op te bouwen met je team

voordat je opdrachten gaat uitdelen.’

Rosa is net in het eerste jaar gestart.

Praktijkervaring in de horeca heeft ze al heel wat, ze verwacht tijdens de studie ook haar theoretische horeca-, management- en marketingkennis flink te kunnen vergroten.

En ze is nieuwsgierig naar ‘het grotere geheel’; de verbanden tussen de verschillende vakgebieden. Maar vooral ook naar hoe het campusleven zich zal ontwikkelen, de stages en – daar zijn ze weer – de connecties die ze ongetwijfeld gaat leggen: ‘Ik heb laatst Anna’s jaarclub ontmoet, superleuke meiden.’

Anna (24), middelbare ­hotelschool afgerond, nu in 3e jaar met specialisatie Foodservice. Noemt zichzelf een praktijkmeid.

Rosa (18), is reislustig, verbleef in haar tussenjaar in Rome om Italiaans te leren, en op Curacao om te leren duiken, net gestart in Maastricht.

‘ Wat ik me nu realiseer, is dat onze vader straks drie hotello-dochters heeft’ Onze ouders trots maken Avonturier Rosa zag sowieso al legio mogelijkheden, maar sinds ze directeur Bas Vogelsangs laatst pardoes vroeg ‘Hoe bent ú hier eigenlijk gekomen?’ en ze enthousiaste verhalen over Nyenrode hoorde, is een vervolgstudie aldaar óók een optie. En ook Anna ziet te veel scenario’s voor zich om nu al te kunnen kiezen: ‘Een master? Reizen?

Wijnkennis vergroten? De Italiaanse taal leren? Of bij zoveel mogelijk verschillende bedrijven werken en zicht krijgen op al die diverse bedrijfsculturen?’ Elisa’s tip: ‘kies altijd iets waar je plezier aan beleeft, zo belangrijk.’

‘Wat ik me nu realiseer’, wil Elisa nog kwijt, ‘dat onze vader straks drie hotello-dochters heeft. De sterke, positieve roots die onze ouders en de hotelschool ons hebben meegegeven, hebben ons vleugels gegeven om mee de wereld in te gaan. Ons doorzettingsvermogen, een familietrekje, zorgt ervoor dat we ons niet klein laten krijgen door tegenslagen. Die vormen juist een nóg grotere drijfveer om onszelf en onze ouders trots te maken.’ 
