This year’s Art Competition and exhibition will be held on Saturday 21 October. Voting will take place between 9.30am and 16.00pm and presentation of awards will be at 16.30pm. All entries have to be about Essex and the People, Places and events that are and happen in Essex. If a painting/photograph or craft is entered, that has nothing to do with the Essex then it will be displayed but not entered into the competition. The Committee of Management will make the decision on who is entered into the competition and who is only displayed. So do not enter a stock picture you have done in the past. There is no limit on the size of the Oil, Acrylic and other Canvases this year but if you enter a big picture please provide your own stand.
This money will go to our chosen charity for the day, which is the Thursday Art Group at the Old Fire Station. Children can either draw or paint their own picture but if they are only colouring we can provide a set colouring sheet for them to use. Their pictures should be no bigger than A4. CHILDRENS ENTRIES ARE FREE. All entries need to handed in by 14th October to 43 Oak Walk, Hockley, Essex, SS5 5AR and collected on the day or arranged for collection from the Secretaries house. The prizes will presented in Cheque form or gift card no cash is given. Runners up prizes will be items of art or craft equipment.
Water colour, pencil drawings and colour pencil drawings must be no bigger than A3. Photographs can be up to A4 in size. Craft items must be either an Essex Craft or a model that is relevant to Essex. ADULT ENTRIES ARE £2 AN ENTRY.

Hockley and District Horticultural Society
H
ockley and District Horticultural Society have opened their trading hut and will be open from 10am - 12 noon, every Sunday morning until Sunday 29th October 2017. We are located behind Hawkwell Village Hall with free parking. We have compost, grow bags and all sorts of fertilisers, all at very competitive prices. Membership is £3 per family per year. There is also friendly advice on various aspects of gardening.

S
hangri-La Cattery is a boarding cattery but also helps rescue and rehabilitate cats and kittens for the RSPCA! We pride ourselves on giving the best holiday for any guest that comes to stay with us. Our RSPCA work is carried out mainly by volunteers who give up their spare time to look after any cats/kittens in our care. The RSPCA rely heavily on volunteers, therefore are always looking for people who can help within the cattery, fostering, vet runs and home checks. One cat still in our care is Jerry, this lovely boy came to us initially after being found injured from a road traffic accident. He was in a poor state and needed emergency surgery to save his back leg and was in a metal frame for many weeks. When the frame was removed Jerry then needed lots of gentle exercise to build up the strength and muscles in his hind quarter! Jerry is now back to full fitness and would love to find a forever home. He loves other cats so ideally would want a friend or two to share a home with. Jerry is just one of the many cats we’ve worked extremely hard to rehabilitate and deserves his happy ever after. The Perfect Day
The sun was just rising as I jumped out of bed And I smiled as I thought of the day ahead I’d planned it so long, The Perfect Day I really hadn’t the time to pray The day would begin with a long long soak, Did I really say that, it must be a joke, Then I’d go for a walk , find a quite shady nook While away the hours and read a good book This day was for ME and only ME And this was the way it was going to be I’d worked so hard it seemed only fair That the day was for ME and not to share Oh dear, the phone is ringing, who can it be? The children to mind, ‘only two hours you say’ ‘mmm’ oh well thats not long in a Perfect Day A knock at the door, Mrs Browns had a fall Could I pop round she’s in the hall Oh and on the way, there’s shopping she’ll need And don’t forget the cat needs a feed Mr Smith feels very low Just pop in and say hello The hours of my day were dwindleling fast Surely it wasn’t too much to ask Oh well my Perfect Day was not to be For GOD had other plans for me If I’d only prayed at the start of day I would have heard what he had to say The sun is setting I go to bed I close my eyes and start to pray And thank God for a Perfect Day. The State Of Our Roads
W
hen will they get a grip on the state of our roads? Some pot holes have been repaired but as soon as one is done another appears. When I was a child living in London they seemed to always be resurfacing the roads, now it seems to happen once in a blue moon, and what about the state of our pavements. About a month ago they came round and painted orange spray paint on all the dodgy areas of paving and that is a lot believe me. A few days later someone else painted out some of these markings, in our road and other roads, with black spray paint. I rang Essex County Council who assured mePage that1they never use black spray paint and 24/7/09 9:07 am they would investigate. Of course I never heard any more about this and most of the paint marks have faded without any repair taking place, and what about the street lighting. Lights not working and lampposts knocked over and missing, don’t get me started! Alan James

s Britain heads for its momentous exit from the EU; a vacuum of both potential and uncertainty now looms over our nation. Which paths should we follow? Which bridges should we build and maintain? What foundations should we have for Great Britain? Now can be the time for Britain to focus on the fundamentals for its people, industry, production and global partners. Now can be the time for Britain to be free from the political obligations the EU weighs upon its members; and develop into both an aspiring economy and a global companion. First, we should try and develop stronger foundations within our society so that our economy can grow and prosper. There can be more apprenticeships which can become an almost necessary and reliable step into the world of Britain’s employment. Apprenticeships which are no longer rare and a lucky gifted opportunity, but more consistent and competitive across all industries. The value of living costs need to reflect the expectations and income of British citizens and we can build a stronger public sector too. With more support from the government and the high-end profit-making spectrum of the private sector; more people’s lives could begin to find a luxury of living again. We cannot afford to let the fast-forward pace of big, bureaucratic politics manipulate and saturate the lives of this country’s people and the life of its economy.
