Every year we maintain our links with our neighbours in the Anglican tradition by praying the Stations of the Cross together. he fasten seatbelt sign flickered on with the accompanying *bing* sound. This is the most unnerving time of flying as people fear a rough landing, but after our 18 hour flight covering 8000 miles the sight of land was welcome. I’d started my 4 month tour of the Falkland Islands with the Royal Air Force. The land is famous for its 1982 conflict with Argentina which has unfortunately forever tarnished its name with bloody memories and political tension. However, I was fortunate enough to discover the true beauty of the islands for myself. Stanley, the capital, sports the world’s most southerly cathedral, a handful of shops and a tiny population of around 2000 people. Needless to say, it makes Hockley high street look like a metropolitan paradise! If one is so inclined to scramble up the rocky heart of the terrain, multiple aircraft crashes remain as permanent memorials to the courageous airmen from both RAF and Argentinian Air Force, just be ready for the freezing Antarctic wind and of course the odd minefield! I was blessed to visit the various penguin, elephant seals and albatross colonies that so richly pepper the coast. I also had a lucky encounter with a pod of curious dolphins, having one of the creatures swim between your legs is an experience never to be forgotten! I felt profoundly touched by the rustic beauty of the Falkland’s and decided to add to Stanley’s famous sign post. Hockley was here, 7915 miles away. SAC Charles Hammerton, White Hart Lane. Hockley Primary School Readathon
E
nthusiastic pupils at Hockley Primary School read everything from comics to classics, raising over £800 to help give brand new books to children in hospital. To encourage its pupils to read for pleasure, Hockley Primary School has just completed a very successful Readathon sponsored read. Pupils rose to the challenge, reading as much as possible during the Readathon fortnight (9.1.17-20.1.17) and raising a fantastic £826 for seriously ill children. Their achievement also earned the school free books worth £165 (20% of total), provided by Readathon in partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs to boost school library stocks. Readathon, a nationwide charity, uses the sponsorship money raised to provide brand new books for children in hospital up and down the UK, as well as supporting charities who help seriously ill children.

Rochford District Residents Councillor drop in sessions

eet your local Councillor drop in sessions from 10 am – 11 am alternate months, Jan, March, May etc. First Saturday of the month the drop in session will be held at the Hockley Library, Southend Road, Hockley. On the third Saturday it will be held at the Rochford Library, Roche Close, Rochford.

was unable to attend the Rochford District Council meeting on the 13th December but I was informed that no decision was made regarding closure of any of the public toilets in Rochford District. It also was emphasised that the administration consider it to be a last resort. I was in the Hockley Library and I thought I would pop next door to use the facilities and to see what state they are in. I was surprised to find that they are in a reasonable condition but could do with a fresh coat of paint. I was also surprised that someone else came in during my visit and another was entering on my exit. In a Rochford District Council meeting that I attended in November, a councillor stated that they are seldom used. I would have liked to know where he got that information from, but members of the public are not allowed to ask questions in their meetings. I don’t believe this is the last we will hear about these closures but we will try to do all we can to retain these facilities in Hockley and keep you our residents informed. Alan James

With an entire universe of different flavours and styles; creativity in any Chinese kitchen really can become infinite. Here are few examples of China’s cooking culture! Chao Of course the most popular and world renown method of cooking. ‘Chow’ translates to ‘stir-fly’ and is a very traditional style in China’s cooking culture, one that can be (and probably has been) used to cook almost anything! To perform an authentic ‘Chao’ cuisine, you must use a wok and allow the oil to sizzle and spit to almost boiling temperature before you start cooking your meal. Chinese traditions believe “the bigger the flame, the bigger the passion…” something we Brits should be cautious of when attempting to ‘Chao’. Shao kao Everyone’s summer favourite … BBQ! “Shao kao” directly translates to ‘barbecue’, or ‘to roast’. Shao kao will involve a whole selection of different meats and vegetables offering themselves wrapped around a skewer ready to be barbecued!
Hot Pot This can be a very creative, social and fun method of cooking. Traditionally popular during the cold, bitter winters, Hot Pot is both unique and engaging as it brings its social aspect to the dinner table. You simply have a pot of boiling soup (different flavours are available) in the centre of the table from which is used to cook raw meat and vegetables.
