ST PETER & ST PAUL PARISH CHURCH SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR 800 YEARS! The parish church of St Peter & St Paul has stood as an abiding sign of God’s presence in the village for nearly eight centuries. It is a beautiful building, rich in history. But it is no mere monument to times past; our church is home to a living community of faith. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday at 10 am, and every Wednesday at 9.30 am. A warm welcome awaits you. e are a small Charity Shop in the heart of Hockley selling a wide range of donated articles with the profits going to the Lions Club of Rayleigh for distribution to local good causes. For the second time in 15 years we are making a considerable donation to the Hockley Day Centre towards their new mini-bus. This has been due to the support and generosity of the local community in both giving and buying. We are open officially from 9.30 to 4.30 Monday to Saturday, so why not pop in and see us. We have a wide selection of good quality second hand clothes, numerous items of brica-brac (cups, saucers, plates, pictures, ornaments, etc.) PAT tested electrical goods when available, soft and hard back books including reference books, toys, games and jig-saw puzzles. For all knitters in the area we have, since February stocked a small selection of ‘King Cole’ knitting wool, knitting needles, patterns and haberdashery We are staffed by a manager of the day but mainly by a very willing group of local volunteers whose contribution is priceless; also we have a short term free car park (say 20 to 30 mins) for customer use at the rear of the shop accessed down the side of The Fryery. Southend Ordinariate Mission Important News
We are now based at St Peter’s, Eastwood, Leigh on Sea., both Clergy and people. We would anticipate that most of the group will join the Sunday 10.15am Sung Mass congregation although the masses at 8.30am and 6pm are of course open to our people as well! There will be a weekly Ordinariate Mass at 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening at St. Peter’s and we shall play a fully integrated part in the parish life, in a liturgical, educational, social and practical way: most importantly we shall gather with a large group of the faithful every Sunday. Some of the group are already attending Eastwood regularly so it will be good to be together again! We should like to thank the people of St John Fisher for allowing us to use the Church these past 9/10 months. ockley Airsoft Arena offers far more than it would appear at first glance, in addition to the Nerf parties, Airsoft CQB, Target shooting and shop. We are also a club with a sense of community. On Sunday the 14th of August, 44 members went to Tillmanstone Colliery in Kent to play against another team. Hockley Airsoft laid on a bus for the day which was provided and driven by one of the members for those who did not have transport. It was a great day of airsofting, starting with defending an objective against rocket strikes from the other team. The men and women of the Hockley Airsoft team held out for over 2 hours, far longer than anticipated. In the afternoon the team again dominated, controlling two out of three flags for the majority of the game. One of the highlights of the afternoon being a devastating mortar strike by two members of the Hockley team which routed the eight man team defending a flag. The friendship and team spirit that binds the Hockley players will make them a force to be reckoned with in the games ahead. hristines of Hockley is a family run business, it having been Christine’s dream to become a florist and have her own shop, sharing her ideas and the love of flowers with others. hangri-La Cattery re-opened their doors for business back in mid 2013 after 3 years of extensive rebuilding. Since then the business has boomed. Not only are they a luxury boarding cattery but also the owner Wendy works alongside the RSPCA to help rehabilitate and re-home cats and kittens who have been abandoned, mistreated or roaming the streets. Wendy said “I approached the RSPCA and asked if they needed a safe place to house their cats while trying to find homes. We started with a couple of cats and now have around 40 RSPCA cats and kittens in our care. All the RSPCA work we do is voluntary and is totally worthwhile especially when we get updates from adopters as well as them coming back to board with us too!” Wendy, her staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure every boarder and RSPCA cat have the best stay possible at Shangri-La. With a wide range of cat breeds that board at the Cattery such as Bengal, Persian, Maine Coon, Sphynx, British Shorthair, to your everyday domestic shorthairs, no breed or medical need is too much. Wendy added “We pride ourselves on making every cats stay comfortable and enjoyable with a variety of rooms available from standard to luxury. n ancient and historical structure that boasts the strength, resilience and craft of a civilisation that has shared with the world its culture, compassion and companionship. Arguably the most iconic and recognisable site within China and the Asian world, the Great Wall of China was officially granted UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. As the Great Wall stretches its reach across the north of China, it can give those who walk and climb it, the respect of a culture half the world away, with a filling of great achievement and purpose in your heart. Tread your steps upon the back of this great ancient sleeping dragon, knowing that the closer you are to reaching the distance, the further you are too. A seemingly endless river of brick and stone, the Great Wall is over 20,000km long, which makes it longer than mainland central Europe. Initially constructed under the rule of Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259 - 210 B.C.) as a means to separate China from its ancient enemies, the history of the Great Wall is as colourful as its home’s culture. The most renown and preserved sections of the wall were built during the Ming dynasty through the 14th and 17th centuries A.D. (1368 - 1644) and still today it stands as strong as ever. What was once a symbol of fortitude and separation for China from its enemies is now a global fascination and a magnet for international tourism and cultural interests. It is a shared belief within China that one cannot understand one’s self, before climbing the Great Wall.
