The Southend Ordinariate Mission is settling at our new spiritual home at St John Fisher Catholic Church Manners Way Southend (Cuckoo Corner) The Mission is almost 5 years young and we have a dedicated team of five clergy serving the people! As former Anglicans we recognise the importance of beautiful liturgy and our church lends itself beautifully to the singing of the Mass! o celebrate our 90th year the Horticultural Society are giving free membership in 2016 to all if they register in February or March 2016. Hockley and District Horticultural Society will open their trading hut from 7th February 2016 from 10am - 12 noon and will be open every Sunday morning until Sunday 30th October 2016. We are located behind Hawkwell Village Hall with free parking. We have compost, grow bags and all sorts of fertilisers, all at very competitive prices. Membership is £3 per family per year. There is also friendly advice on various aspects of gardening.

The beautiful season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 10 th February: a journey that takes us to the foot of the Cross and ultimately to the glory of Easter. Mass on Ash Wednesday is at 7.30 pm. Our parish Eucharist will be offered each Sunday morning at 10 o’clock, with Stations of the Cross every Friday at 7.30 pm. You will be very welcome to join with us.

A Winter Spoof
The Bells of St. Mary’s, Hawkwell
over 500 years the Church has been standing as a Fandorcentre of worship, witness and service. From records references scattered over a long period of time an
interesting story could be compiled. The little wooden belfry (as it is called in ancient records) could tell a story. A record dated 1757 says that there were three bells; in 1768 there were two bells and, in 1849 we read: “Ther remanythe at thys p’sent tyme in the churche of Hawkwell . . . on bell in the steepyll.” In an inventory of church goods taken in the reign of Edward VI it is recorded that Sir William Stafford forcibly carried off the bells of Rochford, Ashingdon, South Shoebury, Hawkwell and Foulness and sold them for his own benefit! he closure of Barclays Bank in Hockley will undoubtedly have been disappointing for many in the village. I am sure the decision was purely economic, as less and less people are using the bank. Some customers may find relief in knowing that they will be able to do their basic banking at the Post Office in Hockley, situated within Chemicrest Pharmacy. You can withdraw cash up to your daily limit on your Connect Card. You can even deposit cash using your paying in slips, for depositing cheques you can use the Post Office envelopes and your paying in slip. Unfortunately you cannot currently ask for the balance on your account. You will be able to pay most utility bills without charge at the Post Office. The water companies that serve our area do not have any arrangement with the Post Office without charge. You will not be able to pay your credit card bills unless you have a Post Office Credit Card. If you require more than just basic transactions then you may wish to consider opening a Post Office Current Account. There are several saving products to choose from, ranging from instant access to fixed term deposits depending on your personal situation. The Post Office also has a Credit Card, which does not charge you for making purchases in foreign currency. The Post Office also has its insurance products, Car, Home and Travel. he pre-school was founded in January 1966 and has been offering morning sessions to children aged 2-5yrs ever since. It was started with a grant of £250, some of which was spent on a wooden climbing frame – a sound investment as the children still play with it today. The pre-school is the only charity run pre-school in Hockley. The 50th Anniversary year of celebrations started on the 29th January, with the children dressing up in 1960’s clothes; the sort of thing children would have worn when we first opened our doors. The pre-school is planning on continuing to celebrate this milestone over the course of 2016 with a host of events lined up. There will be a big summer fete in June and a local mum, Sam Commons, will be running the London Marathon in April for Hockley Pre-school. The pre-school has an open door policy and welcomes prospective parents to visit for a morning session. HRA Coach Trips The Hockley Residents Association social secretary organises coach trips including pick-up points in Hawkwell. Wednesday 23rd March – Illegal London. Join us for a fascinating day out as we tell the story of the police force. Our guide will tell of the coming of Scotland Yard, looking at the executions in London and the introduction of our first detectives. Police Meetings
I
recently attended the December police meeting in Rochford Town. I have been attending the Rochford and Hockley police meetings for something approaching ten years and they normally get between 5 and 10 residents and councillors that go regularly. Just after the current proposed police cuts a few months ago our meetings were high jacked by Inspector Fergus Caulfield to justify these cuts. He has a way of coming across as arrogant and uncaring and that it’s all out of his hands and tough luck for the public. The October meeting had about 50 people attending the November meeting about 25 and the December meeting about 80. At every meeting there have been a number of angry residents particularly about the cutbacks in PCSOs patrolling our streets when there has been so much Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) in Rochford Town centre. Normally there has been a local PC / Sergeant in attendance that was able to answer local issues but not at the December meeting and it was obvious that Inspector Caulfield was out of his depth on what is happening locally. I was also surprised at Inspector Caulfield’s opinion that local police could be replaced by public volunteers or that we could pay for private local police. I believe we already pay enough for our police force and I see no reason to pay again. The meeting ended with Inspector Caulfield stating that these meetings are not “Police Meetings” but “Community Meetings” and may have no police in attendance. Rochford or Hockley police meeting dates have now been added to the Essex Police website: essex.police.uk. As police meetings will now be three monthly community meetings with possibly no police attendance, I have decided I will no longer attend these meetings. The Hockley Residents Association monthly meetings are already community meetings and I believe Hockley does not need an additional three monthly community meeting. PC Steve Judd has agreed to keep us informed about local police issues to discus in our Hockley Residents Association monthly meetings. I will also collect police information from the Essex Community Messaging (ECM) and other sources for a monthly report. Hockley has had a spate of burglaries recently including the Hawkwell Post Office, which leads me to believe we need more police on the beat, not less. Local PCs Steve Joynes and Steve Judd have recently been using bicycles to get around, so maybe this could be the way forward? It would certainly keep them fit. Alan James
