ogether on Sunday Afternoon began on 6th January 2006 and at that time we were not aware of what might come from the initial idea of providing a safe place for people to meet, who would otherwise be on their own on a Sunday. We have met many local people since then and experienced lots of varied activities and support from so many speakers and entertainers. We will be having a celebration on 3rd January as we reach our 10th Anniversary. Anyone who would like to come along, we meet at Hockley Public Hall between 2.30 and 4.30 pm for an afternoon tea and social activities. Cooks to buy threads, sequins, wool, material for needlework and 3 yards of elastic to play French skipping, a child’s game sadly no longer played. his little house at the bottom of the hill in Hawkwell was at the start of the private road which followed the route of present Park Gardens to the front of Clements Hall. The gate keeper would have to open and shut the gate when the Lord of the Manor of Clements Hall wanted to go in and out in his carriage. In the 1800’s it was called Huttley’s, after the man of that name who died in 1815. The grocer’s shop was added much later as a ‘handy store’ for the villagers to save them trudging up the hill to Hockley. If you look closely there is a pram and in that pram was a baby, and that baby gave me a copy of this picture, not then of course but many years later. The shop later became a wool shop, then printers. Other shops appeared, the Post Office was also a general shop selling oil, lamp glasses (no gas or electricity then), food and vegetables. People had big gardens and often sold vegetables and fruit to the villagers. Long before the wool shop mentioned above Miss Bundick had a wool and haberdashery shop and always many customers. As a new year beckons why not start with watching some golden oldies! Chinatown Roman Polanski’s 1974 film Chinatown is regarded to be one of the best detective film-noir movies of the genre. It stars Jack Nicholson as a private investigator who is coaxed into an adultery case and stumbles onto a murder scheme that has something to do with water! A tale of greed, murder and betrayal, every moment that flies by leads you deeper into the mystery and the ending is as shocking as anything you have seen. Jack Nicholson acted in and directed a sequel to this film called “Double J”, that film unfortunately was nowhere near as successful. 6
Dial ‘M’ for Murder Regarded by many Hitchcock fans to be in the top 5 of his greatest films, this 1954 thriller Dial ‘M’ for Murder is a film-noir movie like no other. Ray Milland plays the creepy husband, who, after the plot to murder his wife goes terribly wrong, improvises a cunning plan B. For me it is the film that invented the phrase “plot twist” it is a film that will always keep you guessing right to the end and carries with it plenty of British charm. The 1998 film A Perfect Murder starring Michal Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow is a re-make of this classic film-noir.
Wait Until Dark Audrey Hepburn stars as a recently blinded woman who is terrorized by a trio of thugs while they search for an unknown object that was stuffed into a doll they believe is in her apartment. The film will have you jumping out of your skin as the tension rises and the vulnerable Hepburn is thrown into even more danger. Terrence Young directs, who is best known for his Bond films. Audrey Hepburn was nominated for best actress at that years Oscars for her roll.

couple of months ago I wrote an article about a solar farm proposal for Hawkwell adjacent to Hockley Woods by a company called Lightsource. One thing I did not include in my article is that if it was approved, it would possibly lead to enlargement and the loss of more prime farm land and increase future house building in our area. There are a number of other issues including access roads, security, transformer buildings and cable links. Well the good news is that for now Lightsource have dropped their proposal and as I understand it due to so many residents opposing it.

Police Cutbacks
Y
ou may have attended the police meetings on the proposed Essex police cutbacks or have just read about them in the media. I am sure residents are not happy to have: • Virtually no local police on the streets. • To travel up to 10 miles to a police desk that is only open at office hours • To wait up to 20 minutes for someone to answer a 101 call. • The police making 75% of PCSOs redundant - with all their experience and training they are now the main eyes and ears on the streets. • Our local PCs doing other work and not concentrating on local issues. I believe the government should not be cutting back on our security at a time of increased terrorist activity with cuts like the proposed 75% reduction in PCSOs and the streetlights going off over night. The police say they are going to increase action on cyber crime but I believe this should not be at the expense of local security. In June the Teen Shelter in Clements Hall Sports Ground was destroyed at a cost to the parish council of £22k. Now we have had a crimewave in Hockley and there has been a lot of ASB in Rochford including the Christmas Tree being cut down. I have written my objections to our MP Mark Francois and PCC Nick Alston but at the time of writing this they have not replied. The government have now relented on their financial police cuts and PCC Nick Alston has stated in the press that he will look at this again. I really hope he takes residents concerns into consideration. At our last Hockley Residents Association meeting members expressed concern that they could be losing their popular PCSO John Venner. John is held in high esteem in Hockley and he knows the people and we trust him. We hope he will be able to continue in his post as he has become a very valuable part of Hockley. The sheer effort of standing upright is enough to double the metabolic rate and the amount of calories burned.” According to the Daily Mail (2008). Airsoft rifles come in a range of sizes and weights, they have no recoil and make about the same noise as an air rifle and they enable people to compete on a level playing field. You can hit the bullseye whether you are 8 or 108. At Hockley Airsoft Arena we not only have a shooting range where you can hire rifles and pistols, but also an arena which is available for practical pistol and carbine courses. Practical pistol and carbine combine shooting with running or walking between targets (depending on your fitness level) to achieve a score which is based on your speed and accuracy.
