he man behind one of Britain’s quirkiest calendars has expressed his surprise at having only sold one copy so far. Its creator is especially puzzled because 2016’s calendar which features Elizabethan, Victorian and Georgian postboxes from across Wales, saw its 2015 predecessor attract very good sales, at the same time last year. Kevin Beresford is the President (and only member) of the Car Park Appreciation Society and likes to create ‘out of the box’ calendars. He said “I like to capture slices of life that people can miss but look beautiful.” “We have Welsh post boxes on poles, wall boxes, pillar boxes, Franked Mail Only boxes, Elizabethan, Victorian and Georgian boxes, boxes in the valleys, boxes in the countryside, boxes in the towns, boxes in the cities and we even boast double aperture boxes!” Defending his ‘creation’ Mr. Beresford continued, “Whatever you say about my calendars, they are unique, people are bound to be interested in them.” Are you still awake?! For some people, Christmas holds about as much interest as Mr Beresford’s calendar. But if you can get beyond the tinsel, wrapping paper, turkey and everything else that goes with the season, you will find the most amazing truth about a baby boy born to transform ordinary lives into an adventure which is anything but ‘boring’. Why not attend an event at one of the local churches this Christmas and put some meaning back into the season. Make a date with the most amazing King - who is still offering a new purpose to life – mark it on your calendar – whichever one you choose to use! Happy Christmas and every blessing! Bus Survey

ssex County Council (ECC) recently carried out a review / survey / consultation on bus use. These surveys are usually only filled in by a very small proportion of the population they cover. As usual it was very complicated and lengthy just to put people off, not that they need any putting off in the first place. I asked ECC under the freedom of information act how much of our council tax they will be spending on this survey, as it looks very expensive to me. After letting me know that it may cost me up to £450 to find out, they have now informed me free of charge that the final cost will be approximately £500,000. They certainly know how to waste money but do not spend enough on things that really matter to us like street lighting and repairs to roads and pavements

e have now lost our last bank Barclays in Hockley but did you know that most of our banking and not just for Barclays, can be done at any Post Office including the ones in Hockley Village and at Hawkwell Parade. • You can pay cash and cheques in for 96% of UK banks with a ‘paying in’ slip free of charge. • You can withdraw cash using a debit card up to a daily limit pre agreed with your bank - most are set at £300 a day but this may be increased. • You can pay most bills in a post office, including utilities, telephone bills for free except a £3.02 charge for water bills. It is best to check for any charges before paying. • The Post Office ATMs can be used for all UK banks, to draw pensions and benefits and as the Hawkwell ATM is external it is available 24/7. The Post Offices also supply the following service – Mail, Drop & Go, Parcel Force Express Services, Foreign Currency, Travel Insurance, National Express Tickets, Savings Accounts, Lotto Tickets and Lotto Prize Payments. In the Hockley Post Office they also have Passport Check and Send and you can pay your Vehicle Road Tax. I believe we should use our Post Offices as much as possible as many across the country are disappearing and we don’t want that to happen in our area.
