Incubation and Hatching

Introduction

The armory has the potential to serve local music schools by building a new concert hall.

-8-

The Cranston Street Armory was completed in 1907 for the Rhode Island National Guard, which occupied it until 1996. At nearly 200,000 square feet in total, the Cranston Street Armory is one of the largest in the country, and it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to military installations, the Armory has hosted many other uses since it was built, including gubernatorial and mayoral inaugurations, expositions, movie shoots, and even a New England Patriots practice.

Nowadays, the Armory is empty, and the government spends vast money on repairing every year. lt is urgent to find a method to solve this problem. According to the site analysis, there are many music schools located in Providence. However, Most of these music schools do not have their own space to stage symphonies and existing concert halls have poor sound qualities.

URBAN FABRIC

The ample green land as a training place for soldiers in the past is now unmanaged and has become a place for families and friends to play or picnic.

Although the site is surrounded by a large number of densely populated residential areas, the ample open space behind the site has a broad view to highlight its unshakable position.

ACOUSTICS AND SIGHT

Incubation and Hatching

PROVIDENCE CONCERT HALL In providence, there is only the shoebox style here. The disadvantage of that is the audience who sit far away from the stage will feel less intimate with the performers. Meanwhile, a unified layout design makes it difficult for locals to access innovative performances.

Sound Acoustic

Normally We can classify concert hall into three types — Shoebox, Arena, and Surround. The sound is more intimate at the front but distant at the rear in Shoebox, and actor’s expressions not visible at the rear. More people around the stage in Arena and Surround, but acoustics of the Surround are more clear and intimate.

The Armory was usually selected to host activities since it was built. As a result, Armory and art are inextricably linked, and armory acts as a shield for the birth of art, music is also included.

The ancient Roman architecture-like cloister blurs the boundary between indoor and outdoor so that the space on the ground floor is not entirely closed. Still, as a semiopen space, everyone is welcome. The vast “egg” inside shows a strong sense of presence, and four stairs connected evoke people’s curiosity and desire to explore the interior space.

The towers on both sides have passages for performers and staff, respectively, so that the circulation for relevant personnel to enter the concert hall does not conflict with the general public.

Coworking Stair

Introduction

The combination of co-working system and the context of the site has a possibility to give birth to a unique working environment.

- 28 -

Nowadays, the co-working space has developed from a lifestyle choice into a serious, real estate facility management model. In stark contrast to the secure corporate ‘cubicle’ job of previous times, today’s preference of young people is to seek employment within smaller firms, startups or self-made entrepreneurship. In our individualist culture, the creative work environment of the office share offers a more personal, richer work experience and fulfilment, merging conventional work duties with fun, socializing, and networking.

Industry City is a historic complex including intermodal shipping, warehousing, selling, and manufacturing in New York. The coworking megatrend is also prompting it to transform. When visitors arrive at the side of the building, they will have a panoramic view of the Upper Bay. However, Few people are willing to go to the end that they missed the chance to enjoy the beauty.

The Bread Show

Introduction

The efficiency of food production has still occupied a major position since ancient times

- 42 -

This building is called People’s Bank, designed by Cram Ui Ferguson, architects in 1949. 6-story, brick, and polished granite sheathed, steel-frame building with flat roofs on the 6-story towers at Kennedy Plaza; Westminster Street and Kennedy Plaza facades identical with polished-granite first story with bronze entrances; projecting flat structural canopy above first story; brick wall surface on upper stories broken by broad continuous vertical bay of glass-block windows flanked by similar narrow bands; handsome original interior of simple oak

wainscoting and vaulted plaster ceiling with skylight. lt is significant as the only fully realized example in Downtown Providence and provides an exciting contrast with older nearby structures while maintaining the scale of the street. According to the site analysis, the timeline of those bakeries below the mapping. The orange bar chart represent the popular time from Monday to Saturday. Short working time, small volume and low productivity lead to a large number of demands on bread.

Enlightenment A walking city is my enlightenment of mechanism. And that is made by Archigram — an avant-garde architectural group drawing inspiration from technology in order to create a new reality that was solely expressed through hypothetical projects.

Field work Here is a CVS store in the People’s Bank. When l first come to here, this place give me a strong imagination on mechanism. l can image that the ceiling is full of trusses and conveyor belts. The narrow space can easily create a sense of order, and as a small transportation hub, it also welcome customers.

Introduction

Adaptive reuse is a only way to prevent historical and cultural buildings from dismantlement.

- 56 -

Shanghai Sculpture Space is located in the core area of Huaihai West Road, Integrate with Shanghai City Sculpture Art Center. The total construction area is 18,000 square meters, and the business office area is 11,000 square meters. Although it is located in a significant part of the city center, it lacks the prosperity of the pedestrian commercial district due to the junction of the three regions of Changning, Xuhui, and Jingan. As a result, the whole building is facing dismantlement.

This project is trying to excavate its new possibilities through renovation and make it into an art synthesis to arouse local people’s interests in art and culture to create a space of art and culture in the bustling downtown. With historical and cultural value embedded in the unique red brick wall, the risk of being demolished can be avoided through interior design to provide a brand -new space experience and diverse functions to make its profit comparable to commercial benefit.

Concept In ordinary people’s eyes, the modeling of the cave is a circular arch. But in the artists’ eyes, they usually turn the figure upside down. It is artists’ thinking logic different from ordinary people that creates a lot of funny artworks. It is also the inspiration for the design space.

Material The building has maintained red brick external wall and there exists huge contrast between the withered coarse texture on its surface and other modern materials like black steel, marble and perforated plate , which brings visual impact to visitors who just enter into the hall. All sides of the corridor are decorated with glass as principal. The store entrance is decorated with arch concrete to support ceiling. It is possible to get a glimpse of the 1st floor through the Polycarbonate sheet which also leaves room for visitors’ imagination. Top grade marble is mainly used for the floor to present a refreshingly modern sense of building by matching with the perforated plate. BOOST CONCEPT STORE

Boost Concept Store

Introduction

Creating a space that inspired by BOOST.

- 70 -

Adidas Boost technology is a product of the Adidas Innovation Team (AIT) and German chemists BASF. It was created to bring together the formerly contradictory benefits of soft and responsive cushioning. At the time, EVA foam was the industry standard for performance running shoes. Boost was about to change all that, introducing a midsole made from thousands of expanded particles that work together to deliver an uptick of energy return in every stride. Boost was officially integrated into the Adidas running line in 2013. Over the

following years, Boost would make a name for itself as an icon of running, eventually becoming so popular that it would break into the world of sports and streetwear culture. As a loyal fan of Boost technology, I hope to design a shoe shop with exceptional material as inspiration, which can express all the features that technology owns.

Local Oasis

Introduction

Medical resources in remote mountain areas are scarce, and it is crucial to speed up the construction of rural hospitals.

- 82 -

Yunnan Yanshan County is a well-known impoverished county in China, even worse in Longtanzhai with the deplorable sanitary condition, high morbidity, and mortality. It is urgent to establish a clinic to relieve the local disease condition. Due to a problematic aging situation and low per capita income, the county is short of capital to build a large-scale clinic. Due to budget constraints, the primary purpose of the building is to reduce expenses. Based on the use of local materials, some necessary facilities such as elevators will be abandoned. Considered the number of local elderly, the large ramp-based building will become a source of inspiration

The first floor provides registration and paid service. Patients can go up to the consulting room at the 2nd floor after getting the number for diagnosis or to the infant room to visit newborns. Wards are at the 3rd floor far from the noisy 1st and 2nd floor to provide a peaceful environment for resting and nursing. The roof of the 4th floor can be used as a leisure space for patients to take a walk or chat.

Rural clinic can solve problems. In addition, it meets local people’s psychological needs. Either the design of leisure space or the application of local materials that local people are familiar is to make the building more acceptable among local people and bring in people’s daily life. The construction materials took from the local also have a positive influence on that.
