Easy 2-0 victory for Maniini All Blacks Maniini All Blacks were too strong for Western Stars in their rehersal match at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday. The final score was 2-0 in favour of Blacks. Phumudzo Mafukata of Blacks shot in a loose ball after a scramble within the box, but his shot was cleared by Lufuno Ndou. Blacks immediately took command of the game, in search of an early goal. The pressure increased on the Stars

defenders, who continuously made mistakes. The players who gave the Stars defence a terrible headache were Mashudu “Tjolo” Mashapha and Phumudzo Mafukata. Stars were playing against the wind in the first half, but managed to contain the Blacks. The visiting side came close to scoring in the 18th minute, but Zane Nkhumeleni shot wide with only keeper Tshia-

mangadzo Masala to beat. In the second half, Mashudu Mashapha beat the off-side trap and ran straight to the opponents’ keeper, Tshimanagadzo Masala, and sent him the wrong way. The goal prompted more attempts from Blacks, who invaded their opponents’ goal area on numerous occasions. Stars came back into the game towards the 70th minute. The Madombidzha outfit was unfortunate when Oscar Ramantswana’s shot hit the post with the Blacks’ keeper, Rembuluwani Mbedzi, well-beaten. Zane Nkhumeleni scored his team’s second goal in the 80th minute. He received a neat pass from Maduvha Mudologi and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. In the last 10 minutes of the match, Stars enjoyed more ball possession. Several promsing moves were stopped by the rock-solid deGeoff Mthembu (right) tries to close the way for Maduvha Mudologi. fence of Blacks. Old Mutual Mangaung Cup

Early success for Leopards against Ajax rattled the crossbar for a second time, as Terror Fanteni’s goal-bound header took a deflection off the back of a Leopards defender that directed it onto the woodwork. The Cape side were virtually camping in Leopards’ half in the last 20 minutes of the game, but a combination of Ajax’s substandard execution in the final third and some stubborn defending from Lidoda Duvha left Maarten Stekelenburg’s team frustrated. Black Leopards held out to secure a 1-0 win that sees them through the final of the Old Mutual Mangaung Cup on their tournament debut. They will meet the winners of the second semifinal between defending champions Bloemfontein Celtic and Thabo Mongalo of Black Leopards and Thulani Hlatshwayo of Ajax Cape Soweto giants Moroka Town struggle for the ball. © Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Swallows. The Sadtu structures in Limpopo have reacted positively to the call by Minister Blade Nzimande last month to reopen teachers’ training colleges. According to the Limpopo provincial secretary of Sadtu, Mr George Mudumela, the union had always been against the closing of these colleges. “The decision by the minister was long overdue. We support the minister on the call for the re-opening of these colleges. South Africa has a huge shortage of teachers, and opening the colleges may help curb the problem we are facing,” said Mudumela. According to a report by nwu. wordpress.com, the minister said

the call to reopen the colleges was in line with the decision ta ken by the ANC at its Polokwane conference at the end of 2007. The report said that of more than 100 colleges countrywide that existed, about two thirds were closed down and by 2001, the remaining 27 colleges were incorporated into universities. In a report Nzimande said that the first step in any assessment of whether colleges should be reopened was to look at why they were closed in the first place. “There were basically two reasons. Firstly, the quality of the teacher training provided by most of the colleges was considered to be very low. Secondly,

the training provided in the colleges was very expensive when measured on a per-head basis, mainly because most colleges catered for fairly small numbers of students,” he said. In the report, Nzimande explains the reasons why there have been calls for the re-opening of colleges. “It includes the fact that they were more accessible, both geographically and in terms of their enrolment requirements, including, but not limited to, the issue of fees. Another reason is that there has been a problem to produce enough teachers for the schooling system,” explained Nzimande.
