Investigation into Mara escape continues The police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said that the investigation into the cause and circumstances around the escape of a suspect from police custody continues. This follows after a 25-yearold suspect, David Rhaetsi, escaped from police custody when he was being escorted back to the cells at Mara Police Station
a fortnight ago. “It depends on the nature of the case,” Col Otto said. “A specific time frame cannot be given.” The circumstances around the escape of Rhaetsi remain vague. However, there are allegations that the suspect’s escape might have been made easier by the fact that there is a staff shortage and
of resources such as leg shackles, handcuffs and police vans at the police station. Meanwhile, Col Otto could not confirm those allegations. Instead, she had confirmed that a suspect arrested for illegal hunting escaped after being escorted back to the cells. Investigation into the matter continues.
