Three amazing Venda films from 30-Cent Mboswobeni Films has just made history in the film industry with the release of three indigenous movies, 30-Cent IV - The Mechanic, 30-Cent V - The Venda Boys, and 30-Cent VI - Original Venda Hustler. The three hard-hitting movies are the products of an internationally recognised filmmaker, Mboswobeni “30 Cent” Mulugana, who originally hails from Folovhodwe village. “The Mboswobeni team have really worked hard and with determination,” Mulugana said. “These three movies are the result of the experiences we gained through the years.” He said that The Mechanic tells the story of a motor mechanic who was expelled from the vehicle workshop because of fraud and theft of car parts. “The man was compromising his work, because of his love of money,” Mulugana said. “So he decided to open his mechanic
workshop at home. The problem started when he collected money from a client known as Phiriphiri (Chillies) and couldn’t fix his bakkie.” In The Venda Boys, viewers are invited to follow the story of a young boy who failed his matric and was not eager to go back to school. “He took to hustling as his new path, which always led him to trouble-making, the kind of behaviour that made his community suffer,” he said. “He misled his peers into doing the same mischievous acts. They were always up to no good and the community grew tired of him. He was then discovered by Mr 30-Cent, a top Venda mafia member, who used him to do his dirty work. The two worked together in their mischievous deeds but the consequences are not always good.” The idea for the film Original Venda Hustler was conceived some two years ago when Mulugana had visited
New York City, in America. “It was inspired by Canal Street; it’s a lively street,” he said. In the film, a Venda young film student finds himself in New York City. He needs money and he has to find quick ways to make large amounts of money. So he learns some money-making tricks from the Canal Street crowd. “After his studies, he gets back to South Africa and tries using his new tricks to make money here at home,” he said. “He wants to see if his newly learnt tricks can still work in rural Venda. This film was shot in New York City and Venda. It’s a good movie across two cultural landscapes.” So far, this enthusiastic filmmaker has taken his movies to different national and international film festivals. felt that her music was mature enough and she decided to go solo. After a short meeting with the internationally acclaimed artist, Dan Tshanda of Splash fame, early this year, Rhuu started to work on her debut gospel album, Madzanga. The album was recorded at Dalom Music Studios in the first week of July and released recently. The album comprises 10 songs, with songs such as Wait on the Lord, No one like you, Don’t worry my child and the title track, Madzanga, that make the new release a must-have album to the fans. Rhuu revealed that she will be performing live at various concerts in Botswana in the next two months. The album is available at most music outlets in South African and Botswana. She also confirmed that Madzanga will be launched officially at a concert to be staged at the Tshixwadza playground in October. For live performance bookings, Rhuu can be phoned at 076 120 1428.
Newie’s debut album focuses on God’s love By Mbulaheni Ridovhona An upcoming gospel artist with a mesmerizing voice, Ronewa Nthabalala (26), popularly known as Newie, has won many peoples hearts with her debut album entitled For Your Love. She was born and raised in Vleifontein. Her passion for gospel music began when she was still young. “My love for gospel music is something that I have been doing from an early age while I was still at Sunday school at the Apostolic Faith Mission Assembly in Vleifontein and that in itself just makes gospel music part of my life,” she said. She further said that recording an album had always been her dream and she always saw herself “preaching the love of God on my album.” Before releasing her own album, she had an opportunity to work with the well-known local gospel group Worship House, as well as the Pile Gospel Choir. “I have also worked with artists such as Tshifhiwa Mulovhedzi and Sam Ngonyama, whom I have featured on my album,” she said. The album comprises 15 songs. “Achieving this goal of having my very first album brings so much fulfilment and relief as this is what I have always wanted to accomplish.
I have peace and happiness in my heart that I now also have gospel music to reach out to the nation. This album heals broken hearts,” she said. When asked why she had named her debut album For your Love, she said that it was after she whad gone through some rough patches in her life. “I realised that the love that God has for me and all people is beyond everything in life and greater than all the challenges I have ever encountered in my entire life,” she said. One of the beautiful song on her album, Ha Lati Vhana Vhawe, is based on Psalm 37:25. “Where I am standing as a witness to say, indeed God doesn’t leave or forsake his children and He will always be there to provide for them. When God revealed this song to me, I had all those people in mind who are going through a tough time in life, being tormented and also suffering from sickness,” she said. She further said that the message from this song was to encourage them and to give them hope that God would always be there with them, no matter what they were going through. She is planning to release another album at the end of this year. Newie can be reached at 072 535 0452, or at Nthabalala@gmail.com. She is also on Facebook as Newie.
