Under difficult conditions they managed to have a breakthrough and arrest one of the suspects.” She said that they were very happy and felt that they should not only look at the negative, but to give praise where it was deserved and also to recognize the efforts of the team that had worked so well with the family. In response, Mashaba said that they were humbled by the gesture from the community. “We are always on the receiving end when things are bad, but when we do good, no one seems to take notice. We will keep improving our service for the benefit of our community and we commend the family for what they have done.” Mashaba applauded the investigating team and also urged members of the community to assist the police with information that could be used in solving crimes.

Calvin Munyangane was born in Lwamondo and matriculated at Mphaphuli High School. He says he wanted to follow a career in radio and used to motivate himself to get into radio by visiting the studios of the then Radio Venda. “I learnt a lot about the mechanisms of working with radio as it was my childhood dream. I fell in love with radio at a very young age,” he added. An opportunity to prove his ability as newsreader came when he auditioned at Radio Venda in 1982. “I was so happy and I made a promise to myself that I would make them proud. I had to excel and show them they didn’t make a mistake by hiring me,” he said. He added that he loved news, having grown up listening to Tshivenda news on radio, especially the late Pfuluwani Jonas Matshavha and Norman Tshikota, who inspired him. “I could not resist the opportunity to join Radio Thohoyandou in 1984

and came back to Phalaphala FM in 1997, because I had wanted to expose my talent to the public for a long time. I find radio work to be very interesting and challenging, especially when it comes to interacting with the listeners,” he said. He does a lot of research just to improve his knowledge and to know what is happening around him. When it comes to news, “what you don’t know or are not sure of, you don’t say.” During his career in broadcasting, he had the opportunity to cover various government events, the ANC’s conferences and numerous other live broadcasts. He urged the youth to be serious about their education, so that they can make a significant contribution to the community in which they live. “Youths must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life.” He also mentioned that he was hungry for success and worked hard to succeed.
