Masingo chiefs to visit each other again Masingo chiefs in Vhembe have embarked on a campaign to revive an age-old tradition of visiting each other as a way of strengthening relationships among themselves. Five prominent chiefs, Vho Thovhele Masakona, Chief Rammbuda, Chief Ramugondo and Chief Ravhura gathered at Chief Bohwana’s royal residence at Tshaulu for the annual gathering. The day, which was characterised by cultural activities, took place during the Easter weekend.
After the formal programme, different families came together for meals and networking. After the meals, it was a day of fun, with lots of cultural activities such as dances. Vho Khotsimunene Mmbofheni Ravhura, one of the coordinators, said they had watched their culture being eroded without any remedy over a period of time. He said the healthy relationship among traditional leaders and their families that used to exist in the olden days was becoming
history. “We are here to revive that good relationship that our forebearers used to have with each other. We are here to revive our culture. They used to visit each other from time to time, and there was intermarrying among these families. We would like to see this happening again,” he said. He said they started meeting as families in 2004 and it had been done on a rotational basis. “It is working. We have come to realise who our relatives are and the new generation is benefitting because they are learning many things which they would not if it were not for these types of gatherings. We also have time to relieve stress that we accumulate throughout the year,” he added. Adressing the chiefs and their subjects, Vho Thovhele Vhalinawe Rasikhuthula VI urged all the Masingo to work in unity and to lead exemplary lives. “Masingo are the ‘real people’ and we do not expect ill behaviour from any of you. We are all known for development and education. Let us work together for the Vho Thovhele Vhalinawe Rasikhuthuma Masakona leads other sake of our good name,” traditional leaders in tshikona dance during the gathering. he said.
