Shiluva to carry the Tsonga flag at Indoni

Veteran musician back in his community After many years of plying his trade in Gauteng, veteran musician Nelton Dama, who trades under the name Mukhuwa Dama on his latest solo offering, is back home. He has worked with the country’s best in the music industry, such as members of Stimela, and assisted many renowned musicians such as Tshigomboza. Dama has just released a hit, Ni Dovhe ni Vhuye, featuring the monster track Lunch Boy, a mixture of sounds from the 80s and modern dance music. This is his third solo offering. To top it all, this musician, who has been around for a long time, is back on a mission. He is now mentoring youngsters from his township, giving them

music lessons and perfecting their voices. Since his arrival on home soil, this multi-instrumentalist has prepared material for three groups and is busy recording them at his home studio. “I have been away from home for a long time and have helped many realise their dreams, but have not done enough for my people back here at home. There is a lot of talent here that only needs nurturing.” He says that he is at present grooming a group of youngsters with voice training “and they have perfected their skills and we are almost done with their recording. In the near future, we will be having great musicians from this area. This is my contribution to

the arts in this part of the country. I have vast experience in all music genres and this is the time to share with my people.” Nelton, who is also the brother of Whitey Dama, one of the most refined and expert rhumba guitarists to have come out of this part of the country, says that he is worried about the state of affairs in the music industry, where artists are made to suffer because of piracy. “We are now left helpless with no income, while our music is being heard all over the country because of piracy. We have nothing to show, while music thieves live a life of luxury out of the dirty proceeds of piracy.” For assistance and any music-related issues, Dama can be phoned at 072 906 3671.

The 17-year-old Shiluva Shi rindza will be representing the Tsonga culture as one of the finalists in the Indoni Miss Cultural South Africa pageant. Earlier this year, she won the title of first princess at the Miss Hlanganani contest. Shirindza is currently a Grade 11 scholar at Hluvuka High School. “I started entering for beauty pageants at the age of 13,” she said. She mentions that she had been crowned Miss Hluvuka for two consecutive years, in 2014 and 2015. According to Shirindza, her parents had motivated her a lot to be an achiever. “My parents taught me many things about culture. They are from the royal family, an aspect that I am very proud of,” she said. “I feel very special to be one of the finalists of the Indoni Miss Cultural pageant. I know a lot about the history of Tsongas and how you have to behave when you are a Tsonga. I also know so many songs, dances and how to cook traditional food. I hope I will be crowned Indoni Miss Cultural South Africa 2016,” she said. She advised young ladies who want to enter for beauty pageants not to underestimate themselves. “They should give it a try, because you don’t know where your gift is. Maybe one day they can become Miss World,” she said.

The 12 finalists from nine provinces participating in the Indoni Miss Cultural South Africa competition were presented in Durban during the Indoni Cultural Festival. The theme for this year’s competition is “My Heritage, My Pride”. Shirindza has called upon people to vote for her. People

can vote for her by sending an SMS “Indoni Tsonga” to 48496. They can vote as many times as they want to and each SMS message costs R1,50. The red-carpet day for the 2016 Miss Indoni Cultural South Africa competition will be 15 October and the event will take place in Durban.

Mr Tinashe Mutemi (back, right), Musina Hotel & Conference’s operations manager, was invited to Eric Louw High School in Musina on Friday, 2 September, to give a speech on hospitality and tourism to the Grade 11 class. “Students need to understand what tourism is about and its different definitions. They need to learn the components of tourism and tourism management. They also must learn to appreciate how important this industry is to the economy of the world,” said the school. Photo supplied.
