Singing through mayhem Cheekily hailed as “the greatest show in television history” by the New York Times, Killer Karaoke hits all the wrong notes in the best possible way. This hilariously twisted show challenges brave contestants to sing songs while facing extreme, skin-crawling distractions designed to tap into their worst fears. Six contestants sing the opening number and the highest-ranking players earn advantages throughout the show, such as deciding who goes first, picking their challenges and even choosing what obstacles their opponents will face. Their ultimate goal is to win over the audience, who will be voting throughout the competition. When all is “sung and done”, the top two contestants must face each other – and their biggest fears – in a glorious head-to-head finale. The world’s toughest primetime quiz Contestants require patience and lateral thinking skills, as well as great general knowledge, to identify the connections between apparently unrelated things. Two teams of three compete over four rounds. The opener, Connections, includes music and picture questions. The sooner they answer correctly, the more points they win: 5 for guessing right after just one clue, 3 for two clues and so on. In Sequences, the first clue might be “5 C in an N”, and the second “2 N in a D”, but what is the fourth? Clue; they’re abbreviations of US coin values: 5 cents in a nickel. In the Connecting Wall round, each team must identify four groups of connected items. The final Missing Vowels round is head-to-head on the buzzer. Wife Swap USA gets to the heart of the way we live by inviting two mothers to switch households (but not bedrooms) for a week. The first part of the challenge sees each mom adopting her new family’s lifestyle, as set out by the departing mother – how to parent, manage their social life, perform household chores, and unwind. Everything changes when ‘new mom’ takes charge and introduces her own set of rules. The results are eye opening, enlightening, emotional and often very funny. In a potentially highly charged exchange, the couples then meet to make assessments of one another and talk candidly about what they’ve learnt from the experience. Finding Babylon’s Hanging Garden

Revealing the world’s most elusive wonder

Humanity’s most remote outpost

1 x 60’

This groundbreaking film proves for the first time that the Hanging Gardens really existed, pinpoints their location and shows what they would have looked like. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon have eluded archaeologists for centuries. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylonia in the sixth century, is credited with creating a lavish watery paradise in what is now Central Iraq, but no trace of them has ever been found… until now! Dr. Stephanie Dalley, an Oxford University Assyriologist has provided startling new evidence: the gardens were actually 300 miles further north in Nineveh! Further still, this incredible feat of artistic prowess has been attributed to the wrong man. The real genius was the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. This cutting-edge film tears the accepted wisdom to shreds and sets out an authoritative alternative. See the luscious gardens and fresh water aqueducts rise again in high-quality CGI. Academics asserted that a determination to build ever-larger ‘moai’ caused deforestation and devastation. Dr Jago Cooper presents new evidence to challenge this ‘ecocide’ theory. Carbon dating suggests the settlers only landed in 1200 AD, much later than thought. Could they really have removed all the trees in such a short period of time? We also see how the Polynesians built walls to protect their crops – a clear commitment to self-sufficiency. Has this civilisation been unfairly judged? IWC Media for BBC Four (2014)

Lost Kingdoms Of Africa Series 1: 4 x 60’ Series 2: 4 x 60’

Seeing Africa in a whole new light This stunning and thought-provoking series reveals the extraordinary story of Africa’s ancient civilizations. For five hundred years, Western experts in academia, religion and politics presented Africa, ‘The Dark Continent’, as backward, primitive and hopeless. The latest theories suggest that nothing could be further from the truth. A torrent of ground breaking archaeological and anthropological research is turning the tide of opinion. Advances in carbon dating, and the recent discovery of sensational ancient texts, are forcing a complete re-evaluation of African history. In Lost Kingdoms Of Africa, Gus Casely-Hayford introduces us to this amazing new world… taking us on a voyage of rediscovery into long-lost empires of spectacularly advanced culture and learning.

The Olmec of Mexico (1200-400 BC), the Taíno of the Greater Antilles (400 BC-1600 AD), the Teotihuacan of Mexico (200 BC-700 AD) and the Chiriquí of Costa Rica (1000 BC-1400 AD) were vibrant and highly significant cultures. Sometimes pre-dating their famous neighbours, and often inspiring them, they deserve to be recognised alongside the mighty Aztec and Mayan civilisations. From paradise islands to deserts and rainforests, the environments of Central America are astonishingly diverse. The human responses were equally startling – temples clinging to the sides of volcanoes and sprawling citadels now in ruins. Dr Jago Cooper highlights these forgotten peoples’ greatest achievements and reveals why each kingdom ultimately disappeared.

The Plane That Saved Britain 1 x 60’

WWI Top Gun: Revealed 1 x 60’

The scramble for air superiority

No, not that one… the De Havilland Mosquito A true unsung hero of World War II, the Mosquito was an ultra-fast light bomber used for everything from reconnaissance to night-fighter missions. One WWII aircraft influenced modern air combat more than any other, yet few know its name. While Spitfires and Hurricanes are still famous today, the De Havilland Mosquito is all but forgotten. One man – Paralympics presenter, former Royal Marines commando and pilot Arthur Williams – is determined to right this wrong. Dusting down his old Airfix models, he tells the story of an attack on Gestapo headquarters so extraordinary the Ministry of Defence had to reveal the secret weapon: enter the Mosquito, the 400mph ‘wooden wonder’, a plane made out of plywood. The Mossie went on to protect more of its pilots than any other plane in bomber command. Finally, Arthur gets to fly the only airworthy Mosquito in the world. Blast! Films for Channel 4 (2013)

The astonishing story of how pioneering WWI aircraft mechanics and pilots engineered victory for the Allies. Exploring the brave new world of aerial reconnaissance, artillery spotting, bombing and dogfights, this film charts the technological evolution of the first air forces. On both sides of the war, experimental engineers scrambled for superiority of the skies, with British pioneers like Geoffrey de Havilland competing to outdo Anton Fokker, the Dutchman whose planes helped Germany to dominate for a time. With exclusive access to ‘The Vintage Aviators’, a unique fleet of replica aircraft – the brainchild of New Zealand director Peter Jackson – WWI Top Gun: Revealed brings history to life by mixing present day airplane reconstructions with expert interviews and gripping archive footage. Young guns having some fun

American youth justice on trial

A jaw-dropping character-led documentary following American families who are passionate about firearms and believe their children are safer armed.

In the USA 2,572 juveniles have been sentenced to ‘life’ with no possibility of parole – a sentence considered as a human rights violation. Can a group of voluntary lawyers offer these youngsters new hope?

Provocative and explosive, this film follows American parents who love guns and want their kids to be the same. It explores the many reasons why they believe learning to shoot is important. For some, the motivation is self-defence, for others it is a basic constitutional right. There is a long tradition of families going hunting together simply because it’s fun. For these gun lovers, firearms are part of everyday life. We see a happy four year-old receiving a gun for her birthday… it’s bigger than she is! We also consider the implications of these choices. Is arming their children their American duty or a potentially deadly mistake?

Sexting Teacher 1 x 60’

Bridegroom 1 x 80’ or 1 x 60’

Teachers, pupils and the social media minefield

Change the future: equal rights to marry

How seemingly innocent exchanges on text, Twitter and Facebook can lead to sexual and emotional entanglements between a teacher and pupil.

A crowd-funded documentary telling the amazing story of Shane Bitney Crone and the YouTube sensation he created to honour the love of his life, Tom Bridegroom.

Pupil-teacher affairs are as old as education. Some end up in court and prison, others in love and marriage. With no consistent national policies to guide teachers, the last three years have seen a rapid increase in such cases. There are now estimated to be over 1,000 illicit pupil-teacher relationships every year. Like the global headline-making case of 30 year-old music teacher Jeremy Forrest and his 15 year-old student, many of these affairs start with a simple ‘x’ at the end of a message. Can we ever have sympathy for both sides? At what point does a friendly Facebook message become grooming?

Funded by over 6,500 people, Former President Bill Clinton described this film as “heartbreaking yet exhilarating and life affirming”. On 7 May 2011, Shane tragically lost Tom to an accident. Because they weren’t married or prepared for the unexpected, Shane lost all legal claim to him. Tom’s family banned him from the funeral so he couldn’t even say goodbye. This painful experience drove him to create the YouTube video It Could Happen to You. Showing what can happen when two people are legally barred from having equal rights to marry, it immediately went viral. Shane soon found himself being interviewed by Cher and Whoopi. This is his story.

How Jaws Changed The World 1 x 60’ + 1 x 120’

How shark fear turned to fascination Tracing the impact of Steven Spielberg’s Hollywood blockbuster: from igniting widespread panic to inspiring ground breaking advances in oceanic research. In the summer of 1975, the movie Jaws made the Great White Shark famous. The theme tune alone was enough to make people think twice about going swimming in the sea! Sharks became the epitome of evil. They were mercilessly hunted and slaughtered, causing great damage to marine ecosystems. However, as the years passed, the film’s legacy has become far more positive: It inspired a whole new generation of shark enthusiasts. Nearly 40 years since the film’s premiere, scientists, shark attack victims, divers, hunters and conservationists come together to tell the amazing story of how Jaws led to a new and more respectful relationship between humans and sharks. Cryos International – “the world’s biggest sperm bank” – ships sperm to 70 countries with the slogan “Congratulations it’s a Viking.” Bourne’s film reveals that you can go online, surf through hundreds of potential donors, choose the one you want, order the sperm from the website and have it shipped in a frozen canister. Meet the boss of Cryos and some of the handsome, articulate donors who make dreams come true. In the expert hands of one of Britain’s top documentary directors, this film provides a fascinating insight into the hidden world of Danish donor babies. Homeless In Detroit 1 x 60’

Surviving on America’s meanest streets Investigative reporter Stacey Dooley meets young homeless people living on the fringes of society in America’s most dangerous city, Detroit. The cameras follow Stacey into the abandoned buildings that now litter Detroit, where homeless people, prostitutes and drug addicts often take shelter. Amid crumbling buildings, Stacey meets young people with nowhere to go. Battling the freezing cold winter, they face the constant threat of violence and crime. 25 year-old Tiera is a transexual living on the streets and forced to work as a prostitute, she seeks safety at a shelter dedicated to LGBT youth. 21 year-old father of two, Martel, is trying to distance himself from his old gang lifestyle by pursuing a music career. People like Kenneth provide hope. A former drug dealer and addict, he now works as a substance abuse councillor. Can the charities and shelters provide the chance of a brighter future? Underage & Over The Limit 1 x 60’

A daily battle with underage drinking Courageous youth worker Phil Tye strives to help children as young as 11 whose lives are being blighted by alcohol. The North East of England has a drink problem. It has the country’s highest percentage of 11-15 year-olds drinking alcohol, and double the national average of under-18s in treatment for drink-related problems. Why do kids in Newcastle and Sunderland start drinking so young and drink so much? Some say it helps them to forget, some say it makes them happy. Many of them know they take it too far. If they want to be helped then Phil will help them. “Even if I change just one person’s life, I have made a difference,” he says. Tackling the problem head-on, this film asks: who should be responsible for teaching children about alcohol? Special Edition Films for BBC Three (2014)

The Naked Rambler 1 x 60’

Nakedness, freedom and the law Why does Stephen Gough, ‘The Naked Rambler’, persist in public nakedness when, time and again, he ends up in jail? Stephen is well known for walking in public, naked except for a pair of boots and a rucksack… but he hasn’t been about much recently. He has been in prison in Scotland for nearly seven years, mostly in solitary confinement. A controversial figure, Stephen’s incarceration has meant he has not seen his two teenage children grow up. This film follows Stephen as he attempts to walk home to his family in Eastleigh. Walking the entire 400 miles naked is fraught with difficulties. It’s a four-month quest beset by arrests, police cells, court appearances, releases, rearrests and prison. At turns funny and emotional, this film challenges our notions of freedom and morality. 100 Year Old Drivers (w/t) 1 x 60’

Is it the end of the road? Get behind the wheel with some of the UK’s 191 registered centenarian drivers. Are they still roadworthy despite their advanced age?

Nine Lives for CBBC (2014)

Popular Factual Human Interest

Meet Britain’s oldest drivers. Witty and likable, they represent a growing sector of society: elderly men and women maintaining their independence thanks to their cars. They had to re-apply for their licence at the age of 70, and every three years thereafter, but they don’t have to undergo any kind of test. 100 year-old Mary is ‘a bit of a speedster’, while 102 year-old Searson spent years riding motorbikes, performing the famous ‘globe of death’ stunt. They might have less-than-lightening reflexes, yet statistics show older drivers cause fewer accidents than their younger counterparts. What do they think about driving in Britain today?

Deciding to go and live in another country is a life-changing event. CBBC’s My Life strand follows the Budd family as they move lock, stock and barrel from Devon, England, to Wellington, New Zealand, through the eyes of 10 year-old Daniel. He describes the move as ‘a big adventure’, but although he’s excited he is also extremely nervous. Daniel’s little brother Jake is even more apprehensive. Both are very sad to have to say goodbye to their grandparents, friends and pet cat Bailey. Will the family settle into their new life on the other side of the world, or will they be one of the 40% who decide to return home?

London life consists of 23 million journeys a day. This warm, character-driven series introduces us to those whose job it is to keep the city moving. We cut between the all-seeing eye of the control room and seemingly incompatible transport sub-cultures – from cabbies who resent the ever increasing number of cyclists, to hard-working surface repair teams who face nightly abuse from drivers stuck in rush-hour gridlock. Seeing the city through the eyes of those responsible for vital maintenance and traffic regulation is a revelation. That this overcrowded city’s roads work as well as they do is more than impressive, it’s an everyday miracle!

Help My Sick Kid Get Better (w/t) 3 x 60’

Can You Trust Your Surgeon? 1 x 30’

Tackling Britain’s child health crisis

Devastated patients tell horrifying stories

With unique access inside three organisations on the frontline of the war on childhood obesity and preventable illnesses, this is the story of what’s going wrong with our children’s health’.

Investigating the serious allegations against surgeon Ian Paterson, who stands accused of performing inadequate and unnecessary operations on hundreds of patients with cancer.

Across Britain, the number of children with serious but entirely preventable health problems is spiralling. They eat too much. They don’t clean their teeth. They never exercise. For the first time in centuries many could die at a younger age than their parents. In Leeds, a quarter of all youngsters under the age of five have tooth decay and a third are obese. We follow the frustrated professionals at Leeds General Infirmary as they tackle this modern epidemic and meet the anxious parents on the frontline of a health disaster. Working hard to embrace a healthier lifestyle, we see families making big changes to help their kids get better.

Considered an expert in breast cancer, Ian Paterson was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and, until recently, a patron of a cancer charity. He now stands accused of butchery and mutilation, of conducting dangerous and unnecessary surgery. Nearly 500 patients are consulting lawyers. Many feel he put them at risk of a recurrence of their cancer. Reporter Tazeen Ahmad reveals key missed opportunities to prevent women being put in danger, and asks why it took the authorities 16 years to act. The sister of one of Paterson’s patients, now deceased, says: “I could have sewed her up better … it was a mess”.

Personal battles with irrational fear An observational documentary, filmed over six months, following some of Britain’s most severe sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Exploring the headline-making family nightmare

The wonder of modern neuroscience

In December 2012, Sally Roberts went on the run with her 7-year old son to ‘protect’ him from radiotherapy… and ended up facing his doctors and his dad in the High Court.

This surprisingly upbeat series follows the staff and patients at one of the UK’s most advanced neuroscience centres, Liverpool’s Walton Centre.

With extraordinary access to the Roberts family, this film by Sarah Burkeman captures the only interviews that Neon’s father, Ben has ever given and follows Sally on her relentless persuit for an alternative cure for cancer. At the heart of the story is the experience of Neon himself, a boy struggling to cope with cancer, family breakdown and debilitating medical treatment. Sally takes us to the place she hid from police and introduces us to the alternative therapy practitioner who harboured her. We hear why she was so convinced that she was doing the right thing while public criticism of her rejection of conventional medicine grew.

Thanks to pioneering new techniques, neurosurgeons now have the ability to tackle brain tumours, save accident victims with serious head injuries, stop epileptic seizures, control Parkinson’s tremors and even treat depression. As well as dealing with life-threatening diseases and traumas, this increasingly important branch of medical science can dramatically improve patients’ quality of life. The Walton Centre is in the vanguard of this patient care revolution. For this series, it has granted full access to its experienced staff and cutting-edge facilities. Following the journeys of patients suffering from different neurological conditions, we see this ground breaking science in action.
