SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 11

CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES -- Several SWAC teams remain ranked in the NCAA FCS statistics. Two teams are ranked in the top 50 in Total Offense. Prairie View is ranked 29th and Jackson State is ranked 36th. In addition, Mississippi Valley State (3rd), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (8th), Alabama A&M (9th) and Jackson State (18th) are ranked in the top 25 in total defense. UAPB (7th), AAMU (10th) and ASU (16th) are also ranked ranked in the top 20 in scoring defense respectively. -- ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF has clinched the WESTERN DIVISION and is returning to the SWAC Championship Game for the first time since 2006. It will be the second appearance for the Golden Lions in the history of the championship game. Meanwhile, in the EASTERN DIVISION, there is a three-team race between Alabama A&M, Alabama State and Jackson State. ** If ALABAMA A&M beats Jackson State on Saturday and Alabama State loses to Southern, the Bulldogs will clinch their sixth divisional title and return to the championship game. A loss eliminates A&M from contention. ** If ALABAMA STATE beats Southern and Jackson State loses to Alabama A&M or Alcorn State, the Hornets will have a shot in the championship for a second time in three years and fifth time overall. A loss on Saturday to Southern will eliminate ASU. *** If JACKSON STATE defeats Alabama A&M on Saturday, and Alabama State loses to Southern, JSU will make their fourth trip to the championship and first since 2009. JSU can also clinch the title by beating both A&M and Alcorn State. If Alabama State beats Southern, and JSU beats A&M, the Tigers will have to beat Alcorn to claim the East. A loss on Saturday to A&M will cage the Tigers’ chances. JSU competed in the first championship game in 1999. Southern defeated JSU 31-30 in front of over 47,000 fans at Legion Field.

SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 11

2012 SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME The SWAC Football Championship Game began in 1999, with conference teams beginning play in an East-West divisional format, allowing division winners to meet on the field to decide a champion. Through an agreement forged with the City of Birmingham, Alabama, the Southwestern Athletic Conference staged its first championship game at historic Legion Field. On Saturday, December 11, 1999, the Jackson State University Tigers (East Champion) and the Southern University Jaguars (West Champion) kicked off the inaugural Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship game. In a thriller, Southern came from behind for a 31-30 win. In 13 years of the SWAC Championship Game, eight of the 10 conference schools have earned a berth to play for the title, with the last two SWAC champions being first-time participants in Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.

From the Western Division, Grambling has earned a trip to Birmingham six times – the most of any SWAC school – and posted a 6-1 record in the championship game. Southern has played in the title game three times with a 2-1 record, while Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff have each appeared once. UAPB is the only of that group not to have claimed a title. Alabama A&M has represented the Eastern Division five times and posted a 1-4 record in the championship game.

Alabama State is 1-3 in four appearances, while Jackson State is 1-2 in three games in Birmingham. Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State have never appeared in the SWAC Championship Game. In all, the Western Division is 10-3 over the Eastern Division and has won four straight in the 13-year history of the event.
