A Biography of Elvis Blue

Beyond Hallelujah

It has been said that no one covers Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ like Rufus Wainwright. That was of course until Elvis Blue came along. His soulful rendition of the Cohen standard elicits a wave of emotion from even the most stoic listener. But, what the world has begun to realise is that Elvis Blue resonates with a creative force that transcends any cover version – no matter how great the song is.

O

ne simply has to listen to the hauntingly beautiful Things My Father Said or Lighthouse or Save Me, or any of his original compositions for that matter, to realise that you are in the company of greatness. Balance this divine gift with great humility, a kind heart and the work ethic of Henry Ford and you begin to understand the soul within this artist. The gifted musician’s journey started when he was a young boy, singing in school choirs, and busking in the streets of Joburg and Scotland. His one and only goal was to make and perform music. After a stint overseas as a street musician, Elvis returned to South Africa where he decided to study contemporary music. After appearing in numerous bands Elvis started a project where he sang under the name MONO. He released three albums under this name. When MONO’s record deal came to an end, Elvis decided that he would move to George where he would become a music teacher, write his own music and live a quiet life. After spending some time in George, Elvis was approached by a UHFRUG FRPSDQ\ ZKR ZDQWHG KLP WR UHFRUG DQ $IULNDDQV DOEXP ³7KH ¿ UVW album I did was under the name Jan Hoogendyk, my real name, and the album did really well. It won an ATKV Lier Toekening Award. His second Afrikaans album, Ontskemer also under the name Jan Hoogendyk, was nominated for a 2010 SAMA Award. While living in George he met the friend whose name he would adopt in 2008. “My wife works at an organisation that is a hospice and children’s home and I met this little boy there when I used to go and play my guitar for them. He really wanted to be a keyboard player, and his name was Elvis Blaauw”, he says. When he passed away in 2009, as a tribute to this amazing young man, Jan Hoogendyk adopted his name and Elvis Blue was born. In 2010, Elvis Blue won the title of Mnet Idol for that year – sharing half WKH SUR¿ W ZLWK UXQQHU XS /OR\G &HOH

Elvis Blue released the album that would change his life as a musician and consolidate all his years of hard work. This album was simply titled Elvis Blue. Since the release of his album, Elvis has set himself apart as an exceptional performer of live music, using some of the best local musicians to round out his band on stage, insisting on delivering music with depth to audiences across the country. Elvis is also a dedicated husband and father besides being a world class musician and a household name in South Africa. The success of Elvis Blue over the past few years enabled him to invest in something very near and dear to his heart – The Elvis Blue Music Academy. The Academy was started by Elvis to teach underprivileged children the joy of music. The organisation provides instruments and instruction in a safe, warm environment. “Music has the ability to heal,” Elvis says. “This venture is living proof of that.” The Elvis Blue Music Academy RSHUDWHV LQ WKH :HVWHUQ &DSH *HRUJH DQG LV UROOLQJ RXW LQ Alexandra in Gauteng in the near future. Elvis’ success is due to years of hard work, passion and commitment, and even though the path has been long and sometimes never ending, the real journey has only begun now. There is a lingering feeling of awe when you meet this humble artist. True talent begets respect and admiration. And that’s exactly why Elvis Blue has our country at his feet. Heads UP ell, it is July already and just about everyone is preparing for mid-year examinations right across the system. If you are a Grade 12 learner you will have been advised about the importance of the results in these examinations for your applications to study at a tertiary institution next year. Remember, initial selections are done by universities and technikons on your results from Grade 11 and H[DPLQDWLRQV GXULQJ \RXU *UDGH \HDU <RXU ¿ QDO UHVXOWV VHUYH WR FRQ¿ UP ZKHWKHU \RX KDYH DFWXDOO\ DFKLHYHG DV \RXU HDUOLHU UHVXOWV suggested. If you haven’t yet made your applications to tertiary institutions, don’t waste any time – do it now. You don’t want to be left standing in long queues next year because you didn’t make your application this year. If you are not sure what to do, ask your teacher for assistance;; alternately, visit the website of the institution you would like to study at – they are very user friendly. Good luck. Thanks. Take care. H

Motivation ith most learners having written their Mid-year examinations, some of them have done well and some not so well. This was just however a practice round, a chance to see how much we know, if we are on the right track or if we need to give our studies a bit more attention. For those who did well, congratulations! Keep working hard your efforts

will bring you joy and success and for those who did not do so well, see this as a practice round and not failure. Set realistic targets for yourself and strive to reach them. H

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. - Nelson Mandela The IAJ worked with the following schools during the implementation phase:

St. Margaret SSS, Moiketsi Graves SSS, Mt. Hargreaves SSS, Maluti JSS, Pontsheng JSS, Prospect JSS, and all these schools fall under Maloti Education district. The other schools which fall under Mount Frere Education district are E.N Makaula JSS, Zibokwana JSS, Mt Ayliff JSS and Mahamane JSS. These schools have shown a commitment to be part of School Newspaper Project even though some still face challenges in terms of

lack of resources like computers, cameras, printers and other relevant resources needed to run the school newsletter/paper. In the North West province, the approach was expected to be much better as there we lessons learnt from the Eastern Cape province. The unique thing about North West province is that there was buy-in from the Department of Education at the provincial level. Both North West training of Teacher-Coordinators and Learners were launched in two consecutive weekends of 16 & 17 October 2010 and the second leg was on 23 & 24 October 2010 at Ngaka Modiri Molema District –Regional Education Department. High School, Kagiso Barolong High School, Mmoledi High School, Madiba High School and Leteane High School – all these schools are part of Ngaka Modiri Molema district. The Media Literacy Project does not only enhance the accessibility of community based media platform but it also empowers historically disadvantaged communities and it creates a platform for the very communities through school newsletter/paper to experiment with the right to freedom of speech. The School newspaper project is an ideal instrument to be used by the learners in exercising this freedom of expression within the legitimate and controlled environment. The school newspaper project faces the challenges in terms of lack of resources for participating schools particularly in the

Eastern Cape and part of the problem is that some of these schools don’t have electricity. Lack of computers and other equipment forms part of the challenge that implementing partners need to look at and seek interventions. The other challenge that may be indirect is the commitment of the schools to keep the project running beyond MDDA & IAJ support. The IAJ, in an effort to leverage resources has embarked on donate-old computer campaign, wherein the Institute has sent-out letters to different companies to donate either computers or old printers. The campaign has thus-far collected four computers that will be donated to schools later.

The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism would like to thank MDDA for its continued support and funding of this project;; which part of its outcome is School Newspaper Toolkit titled “Starting your own School Newspaper”. This is part of a pledge that the IAJ has taken upon itself when it started with Kidz Radio Toolkit, which is a spin-off of toolkit for kidz radio mentors, which had beenb called Sakaza Mgani and is also supported by MDDA. FAIRY GODMOTHER FOR YOUNG JOURNALISTS!

A

fairy godmother has come into the lives of 50 learners from ten schools in Nongoma and Ulundi who are being trained as junior journalists. That fairy godmother is the MDDA ZKR ZLOO DOVR À \ WHQ RI WKHVH \RXQJ MRXUQDOLVWV to the Highway Africa Media Conference in Cape Town in September. Well d on

They were immediately asked to write an article with a title, using right brain methods. Some learners read out these articles. Educators were given books written by Felicity with exercises to develop the right brain. The learners were told how to gather news and were expected to do so prior to the after care trainings to take later. These took place on the 9th June at the King Bhekuzulu High School in Nongoma and on the 10th June at Masibumbane High School in Ulundi. What great days these were for learners and educators when they were refreshed on the method of using the right brain’s creativity, again asked to each write an article on a school function, and then given the rest of the day to work in their school teams to produce their own newsletter! This drew out of the learners articles on subjects that mattered to them. Eighty learners in a class, a shortage of teachers, sporting successes, the destructive effect of drugs, fashion and sporting success, entertainment, dances, jokes and competitions were included to make newsletters that will be read by others in their schools, so helping to increase reading interest. Yet it only took only a split second, a minute, hour… A day, a time, a moment, of unexpected and non countered misjudgement. A moment of carelessness was all it took to end it all. Shamefully disgraced when plans had been set and goals had been made. Dreams had, now dashed. Hopes wished, now banned. Outlawed by her kind, alienated by disgrace, misunderstood and forgotten by many. Cast out rotten for a little act of innocent treachery. learners added to the effect of their newsletters with their own illustrations. Titles of newsletters from Nongoma schools were: The Eagle’s Eye, Rise Up;; Umkhanyankude Press;; Ivuna Newsletter and Full Moon. The Ulundi newsletters were: New Day, James News;; Let’s Unite Blog;; and Facing Forward. By the end of the day, happy learners took off a photocopy of their work and the original went back with Felicity Keats Morrison for typesetting and printing. In July, the schools concerned will all receive 100 copies of their own newsletters for circulation in the school. Having learnt how to create a newsletter, these teams are now on their own to produce another two newsletters before September. This wonderful project gives them not only the skills of better writing in all school subjects but can lead to great careers of various kinds in the media. Journalists, script writers, radio interviewers, the advertising industry and television reporting all require a skill in writing. So many thanks go to the MDDA – a fairy godmother indeed - for bringing about this project which so delighted the learners! H

hulabebuka Secondary School in deep rural Umbumbulu on KZN’s south coast are very proud that one of their members, Sthokozile Mkhize, got an A for English in the 2010 exams. For an orphan in a deep rural school this is an incredible achievement, their Principal says, and in a way can be attributed to this school’s Dancing Pencils Writing Club and their publication in English of “With Pencil in Hand.” Together with the English teacher, Mr Mhlongo’s dedicated effort, Sthokozile’s zeal, enthusiasm and hard work and the motivation provided by his work being published by the Writing Club, this accomplishment became a reality. This is their amazing story. Khulabebuka Secondary in Umbumbulu where some of the classrooms have grass and rocks IRU WKH À RRUV 6KH ZURWH WKDW WKH\ ZRXOG ORYH to be invited to collect books as “there was no electricity, water or telephone at the school and the roads were rough gravel but the learners were thirsty for knowledge.” The upshot was that representatives from 6 Umbumbulu schools were so impressed with what other rural schools were doing at the annual book launch that three of their teachers trained with Felicity as Mentors in the December holidays and went back to start a junior club at Ndlandlama Primary and a senior club at Khulabebuka Secondary. To get funds to have just a few books originated and printed for the launch in 2009, the learners did Zulu dances, washed cars and the Principal took photos when they had a civvies day where learners wore casual clothing and

teachers wore school uniforms! The experience of coming to Durban to launch their two books was huge. They also got to be on TV as “The Power Within” was present to LQWHUYLHZ DQG ¿ OP ,W ZDV WKH YHU\ ¿ UVW WLPH VRPH RI WKHVH UXUDO children had ever been to the city. Besides the Durban City Hall with the book launch and lunch, there were the buildings, the cars, the bay and just the general experience of a city. These rural clubs need sponsors and the Dancing Pencils Literacy Development Project does have a banking account and auditors. (see it on://www. dancingpencils.org.za). The Khulabebuka Secondary School and the Ndlandlama Primary School writing clubs are hoping to publish another anthology of their work this year and have already prepared material towards it. Aquarist

What a catch! Bongani Jerry Ntombela

Job Title:

Aquarist: Ushaka Sea World

Why a career in the Marine World?

I grew up in Sodwana Bay and whilst at school;; during the holidays and over the weekends, I used to assist the divers for pocket money. While I was helping and listening to stories about this fascinating world, I knew nothing about and I GHFLGHG WR ¿ QG RXW IRU P\VHOI

What were your initial challenges?

As you know, most black people are very scared of entering the ocean as they fear sharks and the unknown so when I discussed my dreams with my family they were all against my dreams. This was hard for me as a young boy but I was DGYHQWXURXV DQG ¿ QDOO\ FRQYLQFHG P\ IDPLO\ WKDW I would be safe in the ocean.

How did you overcome your traditional fear of sharks?

I was very scared and made sure that I stayed in the middle of all the other divers as I worked out that the sharks would not then not be able to see PH 0\ FRQ¿ GHQFH JUHZ ZLWK HDFK H[SHULHQFH and I was very proud that I was able to overcome my fear and venture into an unknown, fascinating world.

I know you are passionate about fish,

My initial introduction to the Marine World was

through corals which I found out were not plants but animals and the more I learned the more fascinated I became. It soon became clear to me that there was so much to learn and so many fascinating animals to discover it would take a lifetime to discover a small percentage of what there is to know. So my lifelong journey with the ocean begins. I have been working in the ocean world for 9 years now and I learn something new every day.

What do you like most about your job?

The best part of my day is when I am diving and ZRUNLQJ ZLWK WKH DQLPDOV , DP ¿ OOHG ZLWK SULGH when guests marvel at the animals in my care and I am so happy to share information on my precious animals with them.

What do you dislike most about your job?

I really dislike doing paperwork and sitting in my FKDLU LQ WKH RI¿ FH <HW , NQRZ WKDW UHFRUG NHHSLQJ is imperative to good animal health and therefore allocate a set time each day to sit down and complete my paperwork.

Your biggest challenge since you decided to take up a career in the Marine World?

, WKLQN WKH PRVW GLI¿ FXOW WLPH IRU PH ZDV ZKHQ I had to leave my hometown of Sodwana Bay and come to Durban. At home I was told many really scary stories about life in a big city and I almost did not come as I was afraid but again I pushed myself forward and once in Durban soon found there were so many good people living in

Durban who helped me settle down.

Would you recommend a Career in the Marine World to young people

I would recommend a marine career to anyone who has an adventurous spirit and loves nature and wants to spend their life learning and sharing information with others. Working for an 1*2 LV QRW ¿ QDQFLDOO\ FRPSHWLWLYH EXW WKLV LV compensated for by the sense of pride you feel in working with a group of people who work for the good of all South Africans.

What are your prospects in the future?

A career in the marine world is quite specialised but for those who wish to work overseas, there are many opportunities to work in Aquariums around the world. I have visited an aquarium in America and one day, I am sure, I will visit other facilities around the world.

Desmond Dube and Tony Perkins.

T

ony Perkins, one of the world’s leading model/talent scouts, will be visiting South Africa and Botswana (August 12 – 20, 2011) to launch an innovative African model and talent search (‘Gemstones’) designed to provide young people in Africa with personal and career growth

The fact that Tony will be here certainly proves that.” In the past, ‘Gemstones’ has partnered with top South African actor/comedian Desmond Dube and

Wilhelmina Models (which sponsored America’s Top Model with Tyra Banks) and held auditions Top Model (models, TV Presenters) in Botswana where selected individuals (fashion designers, singers, dancers), made their way into the ‘Gemstones’ reality TV series to compete and perform. “We have had great success in the past – there’s a lot of talent out there. There is no doubt there are more amazing models, TV Presenters, fashion designers, singers, etc in the other African countries we did not get to. “In 2011, we have put together an auditions SURJUDP WR EHQH¿ W DOO DVSLULQJ PRGHOV WDOHQW QRW just from Africa, but from anywhere in the world- wide-web. Kobus Wiese, a testament ‘To those who do”!

e are at the beginning of a fundamental shift in the way that teaching and learning takes place – but this should not be seen as a threat to educators, but rather as an opportunity to take on the new challenges that technology and social media tools offer. That was the message from the UK-based social media consultant Jane Hart, who was delivering the keynote address at the bi-annual, three-day Intel “ICT in the Classroom” conference at St John’s Jane Hart. College in Johannesburg. The event drew teachers from across the country to share their practical experience of utilising technology to foster modern learning. ³7KH ¿ UVW VWHS WR WHFKQRORJ\ ZLOO EH WR XQGHUVWDQG WKH FKDQJHV WKDW DUH taking place, and then become immersed in the new social media tools that are underpinning this change in order to work smarter as well as help your students learn smarter,” said Hart, who founded the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies. Intel’s head of Corporate Affairs, Parthy Chetty, says the event not only highlights the fact that the days of “chalk and talk” are being revolutionised, but that there is clear evidence that technology is having ripple effects throughout entire communities where it is deployed. “Teachers are increasingly using education tools such as Twitter, Facebook, online networks, Wikipedia, multimedia software and assessment tool applications to further the learner experience in the classroom,” said Chetty. “What we’re seeing is that where schools use these tools, communities embrace them as well, which leads to a general raise in computer literacy and levels of economic activity.” The event is a joint venture between Intel, which has a long-standing FRPPLWPHQW WR LPSURYLQJ HGXFDWLRQ DFURVV WKH ZRUOG DQG QRQ SUR¿ W organisation, SchoolNet SA, which works tirelessly in South Africa to empower learners and teachers alike. “Today, learners are using technology to learn, and not learning to use WHFKQRORJ\ ± D EDVLF FRQFHSW VLQFH \RX RIWHQ ¿ QG \RXQJVWHUV KDYH QR problem grasping new technology while the older generation initially struggles to come to terms with concepts like social media,” said Chetty. One of the teachers who attended the event is Fiona Beal, of Fish Hoek Primary School in the Western Cape, who is a computer teacher, a senior trainer for SchoolNet SA, and a textbook writer for Vivlia Publishers. “My passion in education is to see ICT integrated with the curriculum in South Africa as it is happening in other countries. We are dealing with digital learners who need to be adequately prepared for their futures in a rapidly changing world,” said Beal. &KHWW\ EHOLHYHV ¿ UPO\ WKDW WHFKQRORJ\ LV D JRRG VWDUWLQJ WRRO to prepare learners for the world teachers prepare their learners for. “Ultimately, our goal at Intel is to produce articulate, numerate, literate and capable school leavers.
