The History of Essential Oils
An essential oil is an aromatic, volatile liquid that is found within many shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds usually extracted through steam distillation – a special type of distillation (a separation process) for temperature sensitive materials. Such oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs and are strong antimicrobials – agents that kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms.
Essential Oils can be considered Man’s first medicine. Records dating back to 4500 BC describe the use of balsamic substances with aromatic properties for religious rituals and medical applications. A medical scroll, discovered in 1817, and dating back to 1500BC, outlined some 800 different herbal prescriptions and remedies.
Essential oils are by their nature, complex structures and contain anywhere from 80 to over 300 different chemical constituents. Studies have shown that these compounds inhibit neurotransmitters and have sedative and painrelieving effects as well as many other benefits.
