01 INITIAL IDEA

PROJECT 1

MIND HELMET INDIVIDUAL PROJECT DATA VISUALIZATION(HUMAN BRAIN ACTIVITY) “Mind Helmet” is an interesting interactive installation. It uses the THINKGEAR brain wave module to retrieve the helmet-wearer’s thoughts (attention, meditation, raw wave and other related values). Using Arduino, stepper motors, magnets, iron sand and other materials, it takes what were originally formless thoughts and ideas and displays them via the movement of iron sand. I hope to explore how people express different levels of thoughts with this project.

ue Brain, a Swiss national nitiative, aims to create a reconstruction of the brain erse-engineering mammrain circuitry.

I always toy around with a wild idea: How do people think? What is thinking? Is thinking visible or invisible? If it is invisible, why does a visible physical form (the brain) produce invisible ideology (thoughts themselves)? If it is visible, what is its form? Thoughts are, to some extent, brain waves. Brain waves are potential differences among cell masses of pallium, resulting in electric currents from cerebral cortex cells. So, every brain is a mini-generator. I want to attempt to visualize thoughts using the mind helmet and define them as being tangible.

The shape of the iron sand is very similar to a neuron, so 360° rotary Type (gear motor/stepper motor) is my final choice.

//// (ELECTRO) MAGNET I think regular magnet is better than electromagnet for the following reasons: —Magnets are limited by distance. For this experiment, regular magnets needed to have stronger attraction than 3V electromagnets. —Too many wires were required to connect the electromagnets; it was too messy.

RELATIONSHIP INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (SUB)CONSIOUSNESS STUDY “Relationship” is an interactive system exploring the relationship between people who share bed, and their subconsciousness when they fall asleep. The interactive system records people’s position data (specified joint position data) through Kinect and is shown in an artistic way. Finally, the generated art images were applied into commercial use such as business cards, T-shirts, tissue paper and so on.

By careful consideration via mind mapping, I decided to express the relationship between people who share bed by their location data. As we fall asleep, sleeping position often reflects true self. The "relative" sleeping position between people would imply the nature of the relationship and feelings about this relationship in one’s subconsciousness.

CONSCIOUSNESS Consciousness is the quality or state of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. In this research,it means the cognizance about “relationship” of people who were in an awakened state. (interview on the next page)

SUBCONSCIOUSNESS In the strictest psychological term, the adjective of subconsciousness is defined as “operating or existing outside of consciousness”. In this research,it means the cognizance about “relationship” of people who were in a sleep state. (sleeping position)

There are 24 hours in a day, and a third of the time was spent in bed. Bedroom is a completely private space, and many mysteries that are buried deeply inside the subconsciousness could be revealed here.

Sleep is an appropriate sociological concern and an important social event. It is legitimate to analyze preparation for sleep and sleeping itself as role behavior and rule governed.

Sleep is a relationship system. It is the interplay of the physiology, behavior, psychology, needs, preferences, previous learning, beliefs, fantasy life, and so on of the two people that makes the phenomena of sleep happen for them.

03 DESIGN RESEARCH :SLEEPING POSTURE

/ INTERVIEW How do people think about sharing the bed with different people? I interviewed 20 people (10 males,10 famales )about the following six questions: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING ALONE? comfortable/easy to fall asleep/ presumptuous sleeping position/ clean up the whole bed, leaving only myself/cool/ easily turn over

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING WITH YOUR ENEMY? I prefer to sleep on floor/refused /f all asleep later than the other person/ it is hard to imagine/impossible/ basically insomnia

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING WITH YOUR FRIENDS? make space for her unconsciously/ we sleep little and keep talking/ happy and relaxed, but not in physical contact/a sense of distance-may be disturbed/I am afraid of waking him up

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING WITH A STANGER? depends on the face and figure/ no sense of security, can not sleep/ pray don‘t snore /can't sleep

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING WITH YOUR LOVER? generally quite relaxed, occasionally be woken up/do whatever I want/ very reassuring, just move/a little annoyed if he fell asleep first/ as warm as a small fire in winter/ hand in hand

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SLEEPING WITH YOUR PARENTS? not used to/no pressure and a sense of security/can't imagine, but it should be very strange/a little weird

// SLEEP ALONE Sleeping alone is the most relaxing way of sleeping, whether physically or mentally. So the positions of sleeping alone are the most diverse. There are 24 most common sleeping positions, which could tell something about your personality in subconsciousness.

/// TWO IN A BED According to relationship psychologist Corrine Sweet, “During sleep, you cannot fake your body language. This is the time when you are honest, vulnerable and your sleeping position can reveal a lot about your relationship.” Different positions have different meanings, which reveals different relationship status of people. I summarized 9 most common sleeping positions between couples, and different positions means different things.

LOOSELY TETHERED It signifies trust, allowing for more space and comfort without sacrificing affection, and it represents balance.

ZEN STYLE This position is most prominent in a couple that has been together for quite sometime.

THE SWEETHRART’S CRADLE It is a very caring, nurturing, intimate position, creating a sense of protection and safeness.

THE CLIFFHANGER They‘d rather get a comfortable night’s sleep than snuggle and listen to your snoring.

THE LEG HUG It could mean that a couple isn‘t entirely comfortable showing physical affection such as after quarreling.

THE HONEYMOON HUG The most intimate of sleeping positions such as after lovemaking or the beginning of a relationship.

THE CRAB This is a potentially ambiguous sleeping position. Or, you or your partner could be creative sleepers.

THE SPOON The most common position for all couples, which provides the most amount of contact with partner, ensuring physically closeness.

THE PURSUIT This is basically spooning but one person chases the other.

DESIGN

According to above-mentioned three kinds of design methods, I wrote 3 programs by processing (as the pictures on the left side). Before programming, I simulated people‘s sleeping through Photoshop. I used different colored points to represent different joints (e.g.: the head is black, hand is purple, etc.). Taking 9 most common sleeping positions as samples, I completed 9 “point pictures and overlaid these pictures together to simulate sleep state for a period of time. Pictures on the left were overlying 1 times and 10 times, respectively.

STEP 2 Inflate two air cushions

Limited by dolphins’ body habitus and stranded environment, I think there are two main points to design this tool: / How to place dolphin on the tool without dragging; // How to move the tool (which has placed dolphin) on the beach. In order to verify the feasibility of this tool, I carried out two tests of these two scenarios.

P.S.: Test Object: 172cm, 62.5kg (an approximately average value of dolphins' weight and a possible value of dolphins' length)

02 DEEP RESEARCH: HUMAN & ENVIRONMENT / WHY CAN NOT LEAVE EXCRETION ON SNOW-MOUNTAINS? Mountains Snowmelt Pollution Due to the lack of sanitation on the snow-mountain, most climbers can only excrete in relatively safe flat land. Tons of excretion was frozen beneath the ice. In high elevation and bitter cold region, microorganism is very rare and lack activity. This can make for difficult degrading. Psychological burden Worry about leakage, feel disgusting, smell bad Subject to the influence of peers No awareness, there’s no proper way to carry Increase heaviness

“Imagine the picture that climbers hiking with excrement /urine on their back, how disgusting!”

Problems:

I feel a little bit inconvenient to excrete in the wild. Firstly, I must find a place where I cannot be seen, which means I need to walk for a distance suffering altitude sickness. After that, heavy dressing brings me some difficulties and all of my movement is clumsy. Most importantly, cold weather makes me shiver.

Goals:

solve the problem of heavy loading solve the problem of getting cold solve the solve the problem of psychological burden

SUMMARY: The samples were taken from the excretion frequency of most people in the survey , applied with the most common commercial climbing patterns (7 days in a cycle, 4 days in BC, 3 days in BC or above) Each person needs this total amount of sealed bag: ( 2.5 + 1 ) * 4 + ( 1 + 0.5 ) * 3 = 18.5 Due to the special environment of the plateau, the vast majority of climbers experience constipation, and some experience diarrhea. The number of the carried coagulants can be reduced accordingly.

BACKGROUND: Kunshan is the richest county-level city in mainland China. It has made great progress in terms of economic development during recent years. As Kunshan is located near Suzhou and Shanghai in Yangzi delta region China, this special city has beenattractive to foreign investment for a long time. In the 1980s, Taiwanese investment were welcome to Kunshan. In the 1990s, Kunshan was already known as “Little Taipei”. Later on, more and more Taiwanese investment flowed into this city. To pursue the promised profits in the market of Kunshan, a large number of Taiwanese businessmen traveled across the strait and settled down in this city, which was 608 miles away from their hometown in Taiwan. As time went by, their affiliation with Taiwanese cuisine became deeper and deeper. To revive the taste of home, some Taiwanese started to run Taiwanese restaurants in Kunshan, which appealed to thousands of other Taiwanese here. Years after years, more and more authentic Taiwanese restaurants emerged, and now the food industry is well established in Kunshan.

THE TASTE OF HUANGHE ROAD GROUP PROJECT DUCUMENTARY FILM “THE TASTE OF HUANGHE ROAD” is a documentary about the living and operating conditions of the Taiwanese in Kunshan.

My role and responsibilities in the group: photographing & editing
