No svijet u kome živimo posljednje dvije godine prepun je vrlo konkretnih bolesti, boli, smrti, neizvjesnosti i straha.

“The world we live in is full of challenges,” says the usual phrase that should cover everything, including – nothing. But the world we’ve lived in for the past two years is full of concrete diseases, pain, death, uncertainties and fear.

Many people, first out of necessity and then on their own free will, get more and more isolated, withdrawn, surrendering to the surge of frightening content from different screens.

And, which is probably the worst, more and more – indifferent. To suffering and fear, but also to joy and small pleasures in life.

Onim najjednostavnijim – ljudskom prisutnošću, susretima, razgovorima, dijeljenjem emocija.

However, life, as we know, cannot be put on hold. This is why we, as much as a film festival modestly can, fight against this. With the simplest possible means – human presence, encounters, conversations, sharing emotions.

We are proud of the fact that we are one of the rare festivals, even in the broader region, which has throughout these years screened films in cinemas alone, motivating people to go out and socialise. We are proud, even though we had to cancel one festival edition a week before the opening and the other (the third, in fact) took place ten days before another lockdown, that the festivals continued uninterruptedly, even in the “new normal”.

These were “extraordinary”, reduced editions, but we have managed to motivate the audience to come and join us in exploring the world we live in.

Regardless of the uniformity and greyness, which surrounded us and even dominated the media scene, we tried to portray the world in all its richness, in different colours and nuances.

We started preparing this edition hoping that we might get close to the “old normal” we want so badly. The frightening war that began in the meantime shook us, but didn’t stop us.

Idemo dalje. Gledamo filmove. Pijemo kave. Pričamo. Svađamo se. Smijemo.

On we go. Making a comeback to the Kaptol Centre, we bring you amazing films and, most importantly – we invite you to hang out with us again. To watch films. Drink coffee. Talk. Argue. Laugh.

Možda čak i – zagrlimo!

Perhaps even – hug!

Sretan nam 18. rođendan!

Happy 18th birthday!

107 MAJKI 107 MOTHERS Peter Kerekes Slovačka, Češka, Ukrajina / Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, 2021, 90’ Venice FF – Orizzonti: Best Screenplay (2021) Chicago IFF: Best Director (2021) Cottbus FF: Best Film (2021) San Sebastián IFF (2021)

Lesya has committed a crime of passion which brings her a seven-year sentence in one of Odessa’s women’s correctional facilities. She has just given birth to her first child, and now she is entering a world populated only by women: inmates, nurses and wardens, women of all ages, wives and widows, daughters, sisters, pregnant women, and women with children. If not for the colour of the uniform, it would sometimes be hard to tell who is who. Director Kerekes delivered an authentic collective testimony of the convicted mothers, their loneliness and flashes of happiness. 107 Mothers was Slovakian contender for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. When protests broke out in Communist Poland in late 1970, a crisis team gathered in Warsaw. Soon after the militia made use of their batons. Shots were fired. Through archival recordings and animations, viewers can observe various power mechanisms. The film 1970 is a story about a rebellion but told from the perspective of the oppressors. The basis for creating this inversion are archival recordings of telephone conversations of the Communist party leadership, which is shown through stop animation of photographs. The military intervention lasted more than a week with about forty dead and more than a thousand wounded. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 22:00 DVORANA 3

DJECA MAGLE CHILDREN OF THE MIST Diễm Hà Lệ Vijetnam / Vietnam, 2021, 92’ IDFA: Best Directing; First Feature Special Mention (2021) Budapest IDF: Senior Jury Award; Brave Children Award (2021)

Di is a 12-year-old girl living in a village lost in the mist of Northwest Vietnamese mountains. She belongs to the Hmong ethnic minority where women get married very young, enduring the controversial tradition of “bride-kidnapping”. When Di enters puberty, her personality changes drastically. The carefree little girl has turned into an impetuous, hypersensitive teenager constantly arguing with her mother who is trying to keep her away from reckless relationships that she is not mature enough to handle. On the Lunar New Year’s Eve, when Di’s parents come back home after celebrating, the house is silent: Di has disappeared. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 15:00 DVORANA 4

SRIJEDA/WEDNESDAY, 06/04, 19:00 DVORANA 4

Protagonisti u sebi nose tajne i zagonetke i nije ih lako etiketirati. Svaka je priča jedinstvena, a život uvijek nadmašuje maštu. Can anyone be a movie hero? Can the world be locked in one film frame? Director Paweł Łoziński is watching people from his balcony as they are passing by: sad, thoughtful, glued to their phones, young and old. Neighbors, random visitors or simply passers-by. The filmmaker accosts them, asks questions, talks about how they deal with life. Standing there with his camera for over two years he has created a space for dialogue, a lay confessional of sorts, where everyone can stop by and tell their story. The protagonists carry secrets and mysteries and are not easy to label. Every story is unique, and life always surpasses imagination.

In a village in the southeast of Turkey, Mahmut wants to divorce his newly wed wife. At the same time, his sister Zeynep enrolls in an open high school and takes on a job in a factory. Against her father’s wishes, she wants to leave the village and ultimately go to university. The siblings’ demands become the center of conflict in their conservative family and community, who are not used to what Mahmut and Zeynep strive for. Intimately captured by their elder brother Ahmet Necdet Çupur, who left the village twenty years ago to pursue his studies, Les Enfants terribles is a story of clashes between generations, between the past and the present. Octopus is a metaphysical exploration of the Beirut port explosion aftermath that starts with a filmmaker who arrives to work on his new film and is faced with a colossal, cataclysmic Port of Beirut explosion that changes his life and what he can do for himself and his city. The film surfaced during that trauma. Octopus silently navigates that unfolding, giving space to the myriad of existential questions birthed by the enormity of the happening. Questions of unexamined worldviews, of suffering and meaning, of collective purpose, and of many other quiet thoughts strewn amidst the rubble. What are we saying when we say nothing at all? Imad, a five-year-old Yazidi child, is released from ISIS captivity after two and a half years. During this time, ISIS has brainwashed Imad and he considers himself one of the ISIS fighters. His eyes still emanate innocence, but he shows no other feelings than hatred for his mother and resentment towards those around him. On top of everything - Imad speaks only Arabic, which prevents him from communicating directly with those closest to him. Will Imad’s family be able to help him overcome his trauma and become again the child he once was? Redateljica Nina prikazuje prijateljicu Juliju, švedsko-dansku umjetnicu i pjesnikinju, i njihovo prelijepo prijateljstvo. Nina Hobert snimila je surov, poetičan i neposredan film intiman poput osobnog dnevnika, u kojem osjećaj izgubljenosti igra i bolnu i prelijepu ulogu u životu. With the intimacy of a personal diary, filmmaker Nina films her friend Julia, a Swedish/Danish artist and poet, and their beautiful friendship. Shot over a period of a few years, this is a sincere portrait of two young women struggling with addiction, self-hatred and identity crises. In this war-worn and impoverished corner of Eastern Ukraine where addiction casts a long shadow, there sits a safe haven for children temporarily removed from their parents. A House Made of Splinters follows three kids awaiting their fate – will they go back or move on to a new home? – while a group of dedicated social workers create small moments of joy and respite from childhoods all but lost. Filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont returns with a follow-up to his acclaimed first feature, The Distant Barking of Dogs, offering a unique look into how the long-term consequences of war on a society already under strain impacts the most vulnerable. Film prikazujemo uz potporu Veleposlanstva Kraljevine Danske u Republici Hrvatskoj. The film is screened with the support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark to the Republic of Croatia. Kako svijet izgleda u očima šestogodišnjeg djeteta? Putovanje u podsvijest nevinog i genijalnog djeteta koje pada u san i tone u dubine vlastita uma. Intiman, nježan film koji propituje temu očinstva sjajno spajajući naizgled nespojive elemente: dokumentarizam i eksperimentiranje pod okriljem obiteljskog filma. Vizualno dojmljiv i emotivno privlačan, Milsteinov film uzdiže suvremeni dokumentarizam na novu, hrabru estetsku i umjetničku razinu. Kratka, no iznimno slojevita filmska studija djetinje nevinosti, životnosti i prolaznosti, idealna za veliko platno. What does the world look like through the eyes of a six-year-old child? A journey into the subconscious of an innocent and ingenuous child, as he falls asleep and drifts into the depths of his own mind. An intimate, gentle film that explores fatherhood by masterfully combining seemingly uncombinable elements: documentarism and experimentalism together with an overall notion of family film. Visually captivating and emotionally engaging, Milstein’s film is pushing contemporary documentary filmmaking to a new, bracing aesthetic and artistic level. A short but extremely layered film study of children’s innocence, vitality and transience that is perfectly fitting for the big cinema screens. Film prikazujemo uz potporu Veleposlanstva Države Izrael u Republici Hrvatskoj. The film is screened with the support of the Embassy of the State of Israel to the Republic of Croatia. The RER B is an urban train that traverses Paris and its environs from north to south. Alice Diop takes us through these suburban spaces and confronts us with some of the faces and stories of which they are composed. It is subtle and shrewd in a world which favours shortcuts and easy answers. Justifiably adopting the fragmented structure of a patchwork portrait in order to describe a riven society, Diop displays impressive control of her essay and its impact. Divisions haunt France’s present. But the human urge to give, as well as to receive, stubbornly creeps into every situation, observed or triggered. Godine 1993. Uzimao je zlostavljane učenike pod svoju zaštitu, upoznavao razredne kolege s važnim retro bendovima i čak pokrenuo školsku produkciju South Pacifica. In 1993, 16-year-old Brandon Lee enrolled at Bearsden Academy, a secondary school in a well-to-do suburb of Glasgow. What followed over the next two years would become the stuff of legends. Brandon had been privately tutored in Canada while he accompanied his mother, an opera diva, on tour before her tragic death. The preternaturally bright student surprised teachers by blazing toward his goal of entering medical school, displaying a wealth of knowledge beyond his years. He took bullied students under his wing, introduced classmates to seminal retro bands, and even starred in the school’s production of South Pacific. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 21:00 DVORANA 2

This short documentary follows the life of Naya, a wolf that walked from East Germany to Belgium tagged with a GPS collar. The first wolf in Belgium in a hundred years, she suddenly makes headlines – but then her presence takes a mysterious turn. This voyeuristic visual collage of wildlife and surveillance camera imagery captivatingly explores the relationship between humans and this iconic wild animal. Director Mulder came to the visual materials entirely using available photographs from the Internet and by using recordings provided to him by biologists. This seemingly simple wolf story raises more complex questions about the future of our world. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 21:00 DVORANA 5

Ovo dubinski osobno razmatranje moći pogleda na vlastiti život vodi nas kroz obilje vidljivog svijeta, kroz kaleidoskop čudesne slikovnosti kultura i era. With just a mobile phone and a gun, Mahmud, Ziyad and their group risk their lives trying to save as many Yazidi women and girls as possible being held by ISIS as Sabaya (sex slaves) in the most dangerous camp in the Middle East, AlHol in Syria. Meanwhile at home, Mahmud’s wife, Siham, and his mother, Zahra, help the traumatized girls with loving care to shed off the black garments of an ideology that tolerates nothing but itself. Impresionistički prikaz kineskog lanca industrijske nabave koji kroz šokantna razmišljanja o radu, konzumerizmu i bogatstvu otkriva sve veći klasni razdor u zemlji. An impressionistic portrait of China’s industrial supply chain that reveals the country’s growing class divide through staggering observations of labor, consumerism and wealth. The documentary portrays capitalism in China across the levels of its operation, from the crudest mine to the most rarefied forms of leisure. Accordingly, the film is structured in three parts, ascending through the levels of the capitalist structure: workers running factory production, the middle-class training for and selling to aspirational consumers, and the elites reveling in a new level of hedonistic enjoyment. In traveling up the rungs of China’s social ladder we see the elusiveness of contemporary “Chinese Dream”.

A short film about ties and gaps between a child and a parent. The author rediscovers love letters her dad used to write her from prison. That love seems to be gone now. She decides to write back in hope to find the connection again. She puts in writing what could not be said: blaming him for family´s break-up but also trying to understand. It is the author´s story. When she was 11 her dad was in prison suspected of a tax fraud and 15 years later, she rediscovered those letters and that was the trigger for this film. Making this film was a process of evaluation and reflection of their relationship and decision to make it better again.

HRVATSKOG NARODNOG PREPORODA THE BUILDING Goran Dević Hrvatska / Croatia, 2022, 68’

On the tenth anniversary of the introduction of workers’ management, the Sisak Iron Mill, one of the largest industrial plants in former Yugoslavia, built an “ideal” settlement for their workers who had thus far lived in huts around the factory. A town was erected around the plant. Sixty years later the building planned as an architecturally contemporary centre of the neighbourhood found itself in a renamed street: Croatian National Revival. The film follows a week in the building’s everyday life. On its grey façade the residents follow a colourful artistic mural being made. At the same time people who grew up here slowly start to leave the building and the neighbourhood, for their age or economic reasons, and some new, unexpected tenants move in at number 2. Alternating between Afghanistan and Romania, the films tells the story of a soldier struck by the brutality of war and that of a young girl who found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Bubble explores senior citizen life within The Villages, America’s largest retirement community, where residents are provided with every convenience to enjoy the twilight hours of their lives. Retired life beneath the year-round Floridian sunshine however, is not as idyllic, or as welcomed, as many ageing Villagers may imagine. Interweaving satisfied retiree existences with the anxieties of several residents from surrounding counties, the documentary illustrates many of the nation’s most combative dialogues regarding class imbalance, racial inequality, healthcare privatisation, political affiliation, state responsibility, and civic obligation. Sitting in the back of a moving car, different passengers go on the road on the edge of a vast forest. They carry tales about hornet’s nests, petitions against nuclear waste, loneliness, carnival treats, folklore traditions, cemetery visits and roads leading home. Passengers and their stories are arranged symbolically to follow a life span – from childhood to old age and final absence. As our passengers “grow older”, the stories become more serious and lively chit-chats are replaced with worrying about social issues, preserving tradition and reflections on life before finally coming full circle with return to childhood memories. MJESTA KOJA ĆEMO DISATI PLACES WE’LL BREATHE Davor Sanvincenti Hrvatska / Croatia, 2022, 22’

Rotterdam IFF (2022)

“A bird knows only two species: its own and the dangerous ones. There are no other. The rest are harmless objects, like stones or trees, or people when they’re dead.” Places We’ll Breathe is an audiovisual essay calling for imagination through a travelogue of constructed and anonymous landscapes. A sort of note on the future sketching the life of a man who is trying to break free from human corruption. If it cannot live in line with its nature, a plant dies; the same goes for men. Stories interweave on the crossroads of visual, auditive and expressed, speaking about loss, quest, presence, wokeness, responsibility, expectation and freedom. These are the stories of us. A Croatian sailor was arrested in connection with the biggest ever drug bust by South African authorities, who seized 230 kilos of uncut cocaine in his room on the ship en route from Argentina to Europe. A filmmaker is following him on a personal journey where he deals with consequences of his decisions, tries to find a way to live a normal life and neglects the temptation of repeating the same mistakes. VEĆE OD TRAUME BIGGER THAN TRAUMA Vedrana Pribačić Hrvatska / Croatia, 2022, 90’

An 18-year-old girl is killed in a bitter family feud in the Albanian highlands. Her bereaved father is torn by the pressures from a local bishop and an NGO chairman from the capital, not only to forgive the imprisoned killer and his family, as a Christian, but to reconcile with them – as the age-old tribal code, Kanun, once required. A quarter of a century has passed after the revival of said code of law, and the protagonists still cannot agree on which value system to rely on to resolve the conflict. A poignant and insightful account of a highly patriarchal Balkan society caught between a lingering past and a precarious present. UTORAK/TUESDAY, 05/04, 21:00 DVORANA 2

Tijekom tri godine film prati stanja i doživljaje triju žena silovanih u Domovinskom ratu, kao i proces njihovog osnaživanja kroz iznošenje potresnih životnih priča. For three years the film follows three women raped in the War of Croatian Independence, connecting with their deepest truths during the strengthening programme. Marija feels she doesn’t deserve to be free, for Katica any change is very scary. Ana describes herself as a little lonely duckling that doesn’t belong anywhere. She is the only Serbian in the group and the issue of nationality is still a burden that our protagonists feel. The fact that they were all raped by Serbian soldiers doesn’t diminish the group’s distrust towards Ana…Today, the discovery of who they could be without the trauma they’re identified with, is changing their life and relations. Ahmet is a champion boxer with Turkish roots and a professional soldier in the Austrian Army. But the more he strives to fulfil the expectations of each of those roles, the stronger his desire grows to break out of the stereotypes cast upon him. Driven by the need to feel himself again, he starts taking acting lessons, and on the stage he comes face to face with his own internal battles. In one scene, he had to show weakness and burst into tears. Easier said than done - Ahmet hasn’t cried since he was a child. The film begins as a parable about a Turkish migrant living in Austria, and it develops as a complex portrait of a young man, his quest for belonging, and the power of his emotional world. Young people aged between 15 and 22 from different backgrounds are auditioning for the role of young Nicolae Ceausescu in the mid-1930s, while trying to find the drive behind his actions. The teenagers assume poses from archive photos, fictionalize a series of historical documents and act upon one another. They relate to the fictional character Nicolae without any preconceived ideas, appropriating his traits in terms of their own interests and the clichés of commercial cinema. The result is a portrait of this young generation, and a glimpse of Romania’s Communist leader’s legacy, now, when social media is motivated by the same “desire to be great” as it was in the 1930s. Jorge leaves his family and his moto-taxi business in the suburbs of Lima to seek fortune as a miner, reaching the highest and most dangerous Andean goldmine in Peru. Due to the global economic crisis, La Rinconada, “the closest city to the sky”, attracts thousands of seasonal workers like Jorge, seeking a lucky strike and a better life. Here starts a journey full of presages, where reality blends with magic, and where the myth of richness is built over a sacrifice. Every now and then, miners mysteriously disappear: since gold belongs to the Devil, El Tio de la Mina requires sacrifices. The director Matteo Tortone turns the mirror back on us, suggesting that our world contributes to this hell. PETAK/FRIDAY, 08/04, 19:00 DVORANA 2

BRAVE, KLJUČEVI, VODA, DRVEĆE LOCKS & KEYS, WATER, TREES Penny Andrea UK, 2021, 99’ IDFA (2021) Kassel Dokfest: Golden Key Award - Honorary Mention (2021)

Told entirely in drawings made over nearly thirty years by British artist/ filmmaker Penny Andrea, locks & keys, water, trees portrays the genesis of a rare brain tumour with its origins in her early childhood. Diagnosed and treated in the artist’s late twenties, the film reflects an ongoing process of recovery from traumatic brain injury. By making this film, she hoped to understand what had happened to her, maybe even why it had happened, trying to visualise a way forward for herself. Portraying drawing as both escape and embrace, a “shuttle between inner and outer worlds”, and video as its counterpart medium in time, the film speaks to the communicative power of art to connect, explore and heal trauma. Prilika za pravim financiranjem i dobrim djelima zvuči izvrsno. No Hannele s vremenom saznaje da financijeri imaju svoj plan. U intimnim razgovorima, kroz međusobno poštovanje i zdravu dozu zadirkivanja, otkrivaju lekcije iz proživljenih iskustava, drevnih običaja i najnovije znanosti o sretnom životu unatoč svim životnim izazovima. Duboko dirljiv i duhovit, sniman tijekom pet dana u Dalaj Laminoj rezidenciji, uz sudjelovanje četiri oskarovca, ovaj je film istinski protuotrov današnjem dobu. Mission: Joy gives us an unprecedented access to the unlikely friendship of two international icons and Nobel Peace Prize winners who transcend religion: His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu. Both having lived through periods of incredible difficulty and strife, through intimate conversations, mutual respect and a healthy dose of teasing, they impart lessons gleaned from lived experience, ancient traditions, and the latest cutting-edge science regarding how to live with joy in the face of all of life’s challenges. Deeply moving and laugh-out-loud funny, shot over five days at the Dalai Lama’s residence and brought by four Academy Award winners, Mission: Joy serves as a true antidote to present times. With a specific docu-drama style, making low-budget films, often about disenfranchised groups, Želimir Žilnik managed to remain engaged and brave for decades, in terms of approach and topics not only contemporary, but also ahead of his time. ŽŽŽ is a sort of road movie, a journey through space and time, in which director Janko Baljak follows Žilnik around the locations from his previous films. The focus is on Žilnik’s works that have dramatically shaped his career, like the Golden Bear winner Early Works, but the prevailing subject is the effort of his team to complete Sloboda ili strip, confiscated by censorship 50 years ago and only recently found by accident. Thus, this little stammering love letter came into being.” A deeply personal documentary by film poet Jon Bang Carlsen that is at a same time a love letter and a dedication to a beloved wife in which the past and the present are mixed into an existentialist and artistically impressionistic questioning of life and death. Zaigrano, no ujedno gorko, on počinje shvaćati svoje suučesništvo i nasilništvo u svakome od nas. Rosenblattov iskren, inteligentan i dobro promišljen dokumentarac koristi se promotivnim filmovima, animiranim segmentima i snimljenom verbalnom komunikacijom s protagonistima u pokušaju rekonstruiranja mozaika sastavljena od krivice, srama, frustracije, bijesa i agresije. Iskupljenje obično stiže baš tim putem. When We Were Bullies begins with a mind-boggling “coincidence” from 25 years ago which ultimately leads the filmmaker to track down his 5th grade classmates (and 5th grade teacher) to see what they remember of a bullying incident from 50 years ago. In a playful yet poignant way, he begins to understand his complicity and the bully in all of us. Rosenblatt’s honest, smart and well thought documentary uses promotional films, animated segments and filmed verbal confrontations with the protagonists in an attempt to reconstruct the puzzle made from pieces of guilt, shame, frustration, anger and aggression. Redemption usually comes through those steps. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 22:00 DVORANA 3

Camillo umire 1968. Zahvaljujući obitelji, Marco Bellocchio nanovo oživljava priču o bratu, bez uljepšavanja i skromnosti, gotovo poput istrage, rekonstruirajući jedno povijesno razdoblje i tkajući u njega crvenu nit mnogih svojih filmova. Camillo died in 1968. Almost fifty years later, Marco brings his whole family together for lunch. With his family, he reflects on Camillo, his twin brother who died at the age of 29. The brothers. The grandchildren. The sister of the girlfriend at that time. A psychiatrist. A priest. Talking to each of them, evoking those years and those events, Marco reconstructs the pieces of the past, finally giving form to a ghost he has been dealing with all his life. Through his family, Marco Bellocchio brings his brother’s story back to life, without filters or modesty, almost like an investigation, reconstructing a historical era and weaving the red line of so many of his films. Fokusiran na čovjeka čiji poduhvat humanizira globalne promjene, ovaj film prati povijesna zbivanja i trenutačnu situaciju nuklearne katastrofe diljem ljudskog društva. Svaka nuklearna lokacija koju posjećuje predstavlja određenu vremensku dimenziju – Fukushima sadašnjost, Semipalatinsk skrivenu prošlost, Černobil zauvijek otuđenu sadašnjost i Onkalo budućnost budućnosti. Anchored by a man whose quest humanizes global changes, this film traces the historical events and present situation of nuclear disaster across human society. Every nuclear site he revisits represents a specific temporality Fukushima as the ongoing present; Semipalatinsk as the concealed past; Chernobyl as the forever alienated present, and Onkalo as the future of the future. The narrative created through deconstruction and reconstruction of histories provides a new space to reflect on nuclear issues. Aya, zaigrana, tvrdoglava i prkosna djevojka živi tu cijeli život. Uživa u branju kokosa i spavanju na pijesku. I dok ocean odnosi zemlju, ekonomiju i povijest oko nje, Aya izjavljuje da nikad neće otići. This coming-of-age tale is both atypical in form and uncommon in substance. Aya is a hybrid of fiction and documentary film, a re-staged reality, which takes us to Lahou, a peninsula in Ivory Coast which is gradually being eaten away by the ocean due to coastal erosion, pushing its inhabitants to move towards the capital. This strip of land which used to be 2 kilometers wide is now only 200 meters wide. Aya, a playful, stubborn and defiant young woman has lived there her whole life. She enjoys picking coconuts and sleeping on the sand. While the ocean is wiping away the land, economy and history around her, Aya declares that she will never leave. Film donosi pregled jedne formativne godine u životu tri prijateljice tinejdžerke u teksaškom gradiću gdje nema mnogo druge zabave osim tulumarenja – i gdje su alkohol, droga i oružje standardni modni dodaci. Cusp chronicles one formative year of teenage life for three friends in a Texas town where there’s little to do but party - and where liquor, drugs, and guns are standard recreational accessories. Followed through lazy hangouts, fastfood outings, and bonfire parties, girls allow directors to observe intimate moments within their homes and social circles. The film’s raw vérité approach creates a sensitive, multifaceted portrait of adolescent girlhood. As they open up about their pasts and explore their definitions of freedom and consent, Cusp illustrates how they rebel against or assimilate to societal expectations and toxic masculinity as a survival tactic. Film o gubitku, izlječenju i prijateljstvu. Four years ago ten-year-old Yaren lost her mother. 19 year-old Hala escapes an arranged marriage by crossing the Euphrates River to find a new home at a Kurdish Women’s Protection Unit, which soon after liberates her hometown of Minbij from the Islamic State. For her female fellow soldiers, the enemy is not just IS, but patriarchy in general. The brutalities these women had experienced at the hands of their husbands and family members led them to the other side of the river where they are trained in combat and educated in the feminist ideals of the Kurdish Women’s Movement. Another rigging of the presidential election in Belarus in 2020 led to massive civil resistance which the country had never experienced before. Brutal suppression of the peaceful protests resulted in more massive marches. Yet, the peaceful protests, having lasted for several months, did not achieve Alexander Lukashenko’s resignation from the president’s post he’s been holding for 27 years. Instead, political repressions in Belarus increased dramatically and became the largest in the history of Europe since the 1970s. When Flowers Are Not Silent focuses on the lives of Belarusian families who try to continue living and carry on despite being traumatised. UTORAK/TUESDAY, 05/04, 19:00 DVORANA 5

Izolacija i fizička udaljenost naglo im ograničavaju broj društvenih interakcija, no ujedno postaju i prilika za promatranje života susjeda. Proizvod te dvorišne kulture jest Koncert s balkona – priča o paru cipela i jednoj od najneobičnijih izvedbi What a Wonderful World. A tragicomic picture of Polish society at the time of the first lockdown. Residents of a townhouse – each locked in their own apartment – are trying to adjust to the new situation. The majority remain at home and their only point of contact with the outside world is via a balcony and a common backyard. Isolation and physical distance abruptly limited the number of social interactions but also became an opportunity to observe the lives of our neighbours. Negostoljubivi promatra kompliciran odnos Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva i migrantskih zajednica. Hostile focuses on the UK’s complicated relationship with its migrant communities. Told through the stories of four participants from Black and Asian backgrounds, the film focuses on the impact of the evolving “hostile environment” policies - a term used by the government in 2012 to describe the atmosphere the government wanted to create for migrants in the country with the intention of provoking them to voluntarily leave. The film explores how the lives of international students and “Highly-Skilled Migrants” have been affected and their personal stories are interspersed with views of activists, academics and politicians. Donggu radi kao građevinski poduzetnik, no nesreća na poslu dovodi ga u financijske poteškoće, zbog čega počne propitivati svoje prioritete i vrijednosti – nakon čega će otac i sin možda konačno stvoriti odnos poštovanja, pa čak i ljubavi. Wei prikazuje napet odnos oca i djeda dok progovaraju o prošlim nesporazumima i neizvjesnoj budućnosti. Filmmaker Deng Wei’s grandfather Zuogui has been blind since the age of three, living most of his life as a fortune teller. Now approaching the final chapter of his life, Zuogui lives a life of bitter discontent toward his son (and Wei’s father) Donggu, whose actions from the past caused a rift between them. Donggu works as a property developer, but when a job-site accident forces him into financial hardship, it prompts a re-examination of his priorities and values - one that may lead the father and son to finally form a bond of respect, perhaps even love. Wei captures the fraught relationship between his father and grandfather as they negotiate past resentments and an uncertain future. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 19:00 DVORANA 4

POKUŠAVAM ZAPAMTITI I AM TRYING TO REMEMBER Pegah Ahangarani Iran, Češka / Iran, Czech Republic, 2021, 15’ IDFA (2021) WOW Festival (2022)

Narrated mostly over photos from the family album, deeply personal and masterfully edited, I Am Trying to Remember focuses on the aftermath of the Iranian Islamic Revolution. When she was a child, director Pegah Ahangarani was very fond of family friend Gholam and she looked up to him. He was “even kinder than her grandmother“ and he was the one who suggested her parents to name her Pegah, which means the break of dawn. When she was seven, Gholam told her about the Revolution which he took part in and filmed. Ten years after the Revolution, he stopped coming by and her family didn’t talk about him anymore. In his only remaining photo, his face was scratched. UTORAK/TUESDAY, 05/04, 19:00 DVORANA 5

River doesn’t fit into any of the usual film or documentary boxes in style or form or genre. It is an orchestral concert film, an extraordinary cinematic experience, an ode to the natural word and a retelling of the history of both rivers and human civilisation. Rivers are the arteries of the planet. Wherever they travel life forms can emerge, survive, perhaps flourish. Just as rivers shaped the landscape, they have also shaped human existence. River takes us on a journey through space and time; spanning six continents, and drawing on extraordinary contemporary cinematography, including satellite filming, the film shows rivers from 39 countries on scales and from perspectives never seen before. RIOTSVILLE, USA Sierra Pettengill SAD / USA, 2022, 91’ Sundance FF (2022) CPH:DOX (2022)

Riotsville, USA takes us to a turning point in American history where the protest movements of the late 1960s came into conflict with increasingly militarized police departments. Focusing on unearthed military training footage of Armybuilt model towns called “Riotsvilles” where military and police were trained to respond to civil disorder, the film reconstructs the formation of a national consciousness obsessed with maintaining law and order by any means necessary. Consisting entirely of archival footage shot by the US military or broadcast on television, Riotsville delivers insight from a time similar to our own amid today’s shifting reckonings on power and state sanctioned violence and systemic racism. Upravljaju nereguliranim naftnim poljem i svakih nekoliko dana isporučuju nekoliko barela. Running an unregulated oil field, they produce a barrel every few days. They wish above all else to see their youngest son succeed, to break the cycle of poverty. Director Saeed Taji Farouky explores the human aspects of the oil industry, examining the point where oil is intimately connected with the human body; where one person reaches into the ground and touches the remnants of millions of years of organic decomposition. A Thousand Fires is a story of intergenerational conflict and compromise, emphasising miniscule detail over epic narrative. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 18:00 DVORANA 1

A little less than a quarter of a century divides us from Katarina Zrinka Matijević’s triumphant debut at the 8th Croatian Film Days with her student documentary The Duel (1998) and the first Croatian Film Days Grand Prix ever given to a woman director. Since then, in only four, but four “rock-solid” directing-screenwriting endeavours, documentary filmmaker Matijević has journeyed from observing ordinary daily life and verité provocation of its strange or “marginal” protagonists, to essay-shaped self-observation. Each of them was characterised by a duel – existential or opposition – between a strict mother and a playful child (The Duel), between man and nature, between husband and wife (On Cows and Men, 2002), between a “republic” of marginal characters and the “official order” (Peščenopolis, 2003) – all the way to laying bare her own intimacy in a sophisticated visual homage to her Lika roots in the multi-award-winning documentary A Two Way Mirror (2016). We will take this journey once again with the director at her author’s night.

DVOBOJ DUEL Katarina Zrinka Matijević Hrvatska / Croatia, 1998, 12’

Dvoboj dječakove dovitljivosti i kuhače, suza i majčinske ljubavi završava pobjedom upornijega.

A five-year-old boy is completely uninterested in food, which results in conflicts with his mother. The effort she invests in feeding him is equal to the boy’s effort not to eat the offered food. The longer the lunch, the clumsier is their balance on the verge of fight. The duel between the boy’s resourcefulness and the spoon, the tears and mother’s love, ends with the victory of the more persistent. The last bites are either left on the plate, or leave with the boy to bed in his mouth.

IZA LICA ZRCALA

The breath-taking yet cold mountain landscapes of Lika shown in this poetic documentary intimate one’s state of mind, inner struggles and revelations.

Active almost six decades, Želimir Žilnik is undoubtedly one of the key figures of politically and socially engaged film. Žilnik’s filmography, comprising around 70 titles, is a synonym for a consistent and uncompromising creative poetics, dedicated to documenting and challenging the political and social climate in post-war Europe and (post-)Yugoslav context. Over the course of several years spent in Munich, where he went after his films were assessed as ideologically unwanted in Yugoslavia, Žilnik continued to turn his camera to marginalised and disenfranchised subjects. Migrant workers whose life in a foreign country is subjected to a series of limitations, uncertain living conditions devoid of privileges and repressive methods of the regime are the topics of his independently produced films, important examples of Žilnik’s “cinema of Europe’s internal refugees” (Pavle Levi).

ŽELIMIR ŽILNIK: FRAGMENTS FROM MIGRANT WORKER OPUS

The film portrays the tenants of an old residential building in central Munich, in 11 Metzstrasse: most of them are foreigners, living in Germany as “migrant workers” (Yugoslav, Italian, Turkish, Greek etc.) with their families. Each of them, including the youngest, presents themselves in German or their native language, briefly revealing their worries and fears, as well as hopes and plans for the future.

JAVNO POGUBLJENJE PUBLIC EXECUTION Želimir Žilnik Njemačka / Germany, 1974, 9’

U formi dokumentarnog filmskog eseja analiziraju se kontroverzni policijski postupci u Njemačkoj u jesen 1974. godine. Tijekom više intervencija dolazi do ubojstava osumnjičenih kriminalaca, prije nego što su uhićeni i podvrgnuti suđenju. Ponekad stradavaju i policajci i nedužni. In the form of a documentary film essay, controversial police procedures in Germany in the autumn of 1974 are analysed, when suspects were killed in interventions even before they were arrested and tried, with both police officers and innocent people also being hurt. The film is based on documentary archive materials with records of real police actions (acquired from television) and on recorded eye-witness testimonies, with the comments of invited lawyers and political scientists. Public Execution uses examples of excessive force to question the humanity of contemporary society.

In collective housing buildings for foreign workers in Germany there were strict codes of behaviour, defined by house rules and monitored by the super. Many rights – for example, the right to free movement, unhindered communication and free behaviour – were breached by these rules. Interviews with the tenants and the “attendants” recorded absurd situations and conflicts arising from restrictions.

ŽELIMIR ŽILNIK: FRAGMENTI “GASTARBAJTERSKOG“ OPUSA

POD ZAŠTITOM DRŽAVE UNDER THE PROTECTION OF THE STATE Želimir Žilnik Njemačka / Germany, 1975, 11’

U filmu jedini stanar Nijemac, vodeći filmsku ekipu kroz zgradu, objašnjava svoju borbu protiv manipulacija stanodavca. The film was made in an old dilapidated building inhabited by several dozen migrant worker families. To avoid the building maintenance obligation according to the legally prescribed standards, the owner – an influential local politician – managed to have the building under state protection as a cultural monument. However, he charged the rent as if it were a standard comfortable building. The only German tenant, taking the film crew through the building, explains his fight against the landlord’s manipulations.

At Munich’s central station, after years spent working in factories in several German cities, a worker from Serbia boards a train and heads south, to Belgrade. The protagonist recollects his impressions of the cities and the state he worked in, speaks of new insights and habits he acquired and thus says goodbye to Germany: Auf Wiedersehen, Deutschland!

TOČKE GLEDIŠTA / POINTS OF VIEW

RETROSPEKTIVA: TOČKE GLEDIŠTA / RETROSPECTIVE: POINTS OF VIEW “Ako možemo ispričati film, zašto ga onda snimati?” zapitao se iranski redatelj Jafar Panahi u svom “zatvoreničkom” ostvarenju Ovo nije film.

“If we can tell a film, why make it?” Iranian director Jafar Panahi asked himself in his “prisoner” piece This Is Not a Film. It is this documentary, made while Panahi was in house arrest, that inspired the making of The Year of the Everlasting Storm omnibus, which has been selected for this year’s ZagrebDox International Competition. Taking the pandemic, which dramatically changed everyone’s daily life, as the starting point, the film gathered a number of filmmakers whose short films in different ways and with different theme focuses registered fragments of this unusual time. The Points of View section features earlier titles by these filmmakers, different in terms of theme, form and poetics, but sharing the common belief in the power of the film medium to become a strong tool for revealing enigmatic and seemingly ephemeral aspects of everyday life, for creative resistance to repression and for opening new perspectives on the world we belong to.

Međutim u intimnim i pronicljivim zapažanjima dviju žena – praćenima rafiniranim snimkama svakodnevice i fragmentima njihovih osobnih arhiva – odjekuje šira politička situacija u rodnim državama redateljica, Čileu i Španjolskoj. In the form of an epistolary film conversation, two young directors discuss film, the present and the past, family, heritage and motherhood, revealing what drew them to filmmaking and inspired the stories they registered in their films. However, the intimate and shrewd observations of the two women – detailed in the sophisticated footage of daily life and fragments of their personal narratives – echo with the broader political situation in their native countries, Chile and Spain. MORAKOT EMERALD Apichatpong Weerasethakul Tajland, Japan / Thailand, Japan, 2007, 12’ CPH:DOX: New Vision Special Mention (2008)

In the Buddhist novel Der Pilger Kamanita by Danish writer Karl Gjellerup from 1906, the protagonists are reborn stars, narrating their stories to each other for centuries, all until the end of their existence. The former Morakot hotel, now derelict and devastated, was opened in the 1980s in the heart of Bangkok, at the time of Thailand’s accelerated economic industrialisation. However, the financial crisis that hit Eastern Asia marked the end of that period. Just like Kamanita, Morakot is a star imbued with memories. Next to his three favourite actors who reminisce on their dreams and life in their native city, Apichatpong Weerasethakul fills the hotel with new memories. SUBOTA/SATURDAY, 09/04, 19:00 DVORANA 4

ROAD DOX

POSEBNI PROGRAM: ROAD DOX / DOX SPECIAL: ROAD DOX Film ceste kao igrani film obično prikazuje osobnu transformaciju likova dok putuju. No u dokumen tarnom filmu ceste likovi su ponekad tek duhovi izgubljeni u političkim previranjima, poput venezuelanskih protagonista Tako tmurnog neba Álvara F. Pulpeira.

HOLGUT Liesbeth De Ceulaer Belgija / Belgium, 2021, 75’ CPH:DOX: Special Mention (2021) Docville: Best Film (2021) Beldocs: Special Mention (2021) The World of Knowledge FF: Best Cinematography (2021) Visions du Réel (2021) DOK.Fest Munich (2021) Indielisboa (2021) DokuFest (2021) Shanghai IFF (2021) Melbourne IDFF (2021)

In fiction cinema, road movie usually shows the personal transformation of characters as they make their journey. But in documentary film, they are sometimes just ghosts lost in a political turmoil, like in Álvaro F. Pulpeiro’s Venezuela-set So Foul a Sky. Sometimes they are not even able to get on the road, but rather actively search for their identity and a place under the sun while they are stuck in a limbo, like African refugees in Ousmane Samassékou’s The Last Shelter. For those with more means, the physical journey is less important than the goal: they follow the money in the form of raw material and its subsequent products between Europe and China, as in Sean Wang’s The Marble Travelogue. And there are those who exist outside our idea of what the road is: for Yakutians in the Siberian tundra in Liesbeth De Ceulaer’s Holgut, journey is a way of life and for viewers it is a time machine, connecting the prehistoric past and a present that is as distant to us as the titular mammoth.

6th mass extinction is upon us. The Siberian permafrost is melting. Ancient bones rise up from the ground and wild animals seem to have disappeared. Three Yakutians venture into the wilderness on different quests. Villager Roman and city boy Kyym hunt for a rare reindeer while scientist Semyon searches for a viable cell of the mammoth, which he needs to clone the extinct animal. While the three men close in on their goals, both the frozen earth that they walk on and reality itself melt into another state. Holgut combines elements of fiction and documentary and manoeuvres from captivating reality to visual poetry. As extinction and de-extinction meet, science fiction seems to become reality and reality seems to become myth. PONEDJELJAK/MONDAY, 04/04, 17:00 DVORANA 2

For decades, the Malian city of Gao has been a transit point towards Europe for thousands of migrants from all over the African continent. The House of Migrants in Gao is a refuge which welcomes those continuing towards Algeria in the north, or on their way back after a failed attempt to make it to Europe. When Esther and Kady, two teenage girls from Burkina Faso, arrive, they form a friendship with Natacha, a migrant woman in her forties whose memory and hopes of regaining her home faded over the years. The trio finds a semblance of family life, sharing moments of hope and tenderness. But the girls can’t shake the dream of a future abroad, even after meeting those who came back, burdened by failure and trauma.

A Marble Travelogue is structured like a road movie, but instead of following people, the film traces the whole surreal journey of marble. Blocks of white marble are mined from a Greek quarry and shipped from the Chinese-owned port of Piraeus to China. In the Chinese capital of carving, Quyang, they are sculpted into Hellenistic-style statues and columns. Unused fragments are turned into fridge magnets which are then exported back to Greece, where they are bought by Chinese tourists. Each stop is depicted by one or a group of characters, while the film also focuses on China’s economy as it shifts its role from the “world’s factory” to “world’s buyer“, at the same time entering a new era of uncertainty. U sjeni kolosalnih rafinerija nafte ovaj film predstavlja putovanje kroz nekoliko pograničnih pokrajina u Venezueli. Tu svjetsku naftnu velesilu danas potresa najgora politička i humanitarna kriza u Južnoj Americi u 21. stoljeću. Under shadows cast by colossal oil refineries, the film presents a journey through several frontier lands of Venezuela – the world’s first petro-state – now shaken by the worst political and humanitarian crisis South America has experienced in the 21st century. So Foul a Sky is a cinematographic meditation on the fragile and conflictive relationship between the citizen and a state that has ceased to provide meaning, future, and identity. It explores the concept of the orphan deprived from its identity and national rights through a series of sporadic encounters with people who live, conscious or unconscious, rejecting all that binds them to take on sides from the active political conflict devastating Venezuela. ZagrebDox Pro: Confessions posebno je izdanje tradicionalnog Pro programa, namijenjenog filmskim profesionalcima u misiji ostvarivanja svojih dokumentarnih zamisli. U 2022. Mali broj polaznika i njihovih projekata u intimnoj, kolegijalnoj atmosferi prolazit će kroz ispovijedi regionalnih polaznika i priznanja internacionalnih mentora s jasnim ciljem: razmjena iskustava, savjeta, perspektiva i ideja vezanih uz točno određene, konkretne projekte polaznika. ZagrebDox Pro: Confessions is a special edition of the traditional Pro section, intended for film professionals on the mission of implementing their documentary ideas. In 2022 ZagrebDox turns 18 and with the coming of age it is quite natural to dedicate the professionals programme to those who have yet to become – final year film school students and all those working on their documentary debut. The word “confessions” in Croatian has a double meaning: revelation and testimony. A small number of participants and their projects in an intimate, friendly atmosphere will go through the confessions of regional participants and international mentors with a clear goal: an exchange of experiences, advice, perspectives and ideas related to specific, concrete tasks.

FACTUM – prvih 25 godina

FACTUM – The First 25 Years

Is “Nenad Puhovski, Factum’s leader, also a Serbian KOS agent”, as the Hrvati Amac website wrote in 2008? Did former president Stipe Mesić indeed say to Croatian Television that if they don’t broadcast The Storm over Krajina, he would buy the slot and sponsor the film’s broadcasting? Is it true that Factum “made up” the Rejected Salon at Croatian Film Days? Is it true that, not even after 25 years of existence and over 80 produced films, Factum wasn’t mentioned in the Film Encyclopaedia even once? Is it true, on the other hand, that Factum is the only producer which, with a bunch of other awards, had two annual Nazor Awards for documentary film? Why did Croatian Television never co-produce anything with Factum? Is it…

O svemu tome, proizvedenim ali i neproizvedenim filmovima, autorima i autoricama, kontroverzama ali i priznanjima, govori Nenad Puhovski, osnivač i ravnatelj Factuma.

All this, the films produced and unproduced, the filmmakers, the controversies, the honours, will be discussed with Nenad Puhovski, the founder and managing director of Factum.

TikTok is a social network whose very simple interface and use globally popularised mass video content creating, sharing and consuming. The aim of this discussion is to reconsider the notions such as authenticity, related to content creating, and audience building since YouTube. Authenticity in the context of platforms like Instagram and TikTok has become a marketing catchphrase stimulating product sale efficiency. We want to examine documenting everyday life in terms of the demands of insatiable audience and creating different forms of social relationships, and raise questions about the influence of daily consumption of a large amount of content, trendsetting, communities, information spreading and entering unknown people’s intimate spaces.

Što nas čeka u budućnosti

What The Future Holds

Over the recent years the methods and conditions of presenting projects, as well as financing system and film distribution have unquestionably changed. A need for faster communication mechanisms, the domination of streaming services changing the views of big productions on festivals, growing accessibility and simplicity of technology, as well as development of hybrid forms have changed the current practice. The panel will address these changes and the possibilities they open, as well as how to adapt to them and take the best possible advantage of them. The speakers include: fund and professional association representatives, producers and distributers.

U razgovoru s gostima, afirmiranim putopiscima i autorima putopisnih serijala i dokumentaraca, otkrit ćemo više o tome s kakvim kreativnim, autorskim i osobnim vizijama pristupaju ovome žanru.

The motto of the legendary documentary filmmaker and passionate long-distance walker, German director Werner Herzog says: “The world reveals itself to those who travel on foot.” Regardless of the means of travelling, it undoubtedly requires from travel documentarians, next to a curious spirit, a skill of transposing their adventures and odysseys into the film medium. A clash with the unknown and often unexpected not only reveals a kaleidoscope of different cultures, spaces, worlds, views and lifestyles, but also conquers completely new imagination fields.
