One in four college students struggles with mental health issues, but unfortunately, not many people know how significant mental health issues are in the college environment until it’s too late. During my freshman year, I saw my residence hall roommate struggle to maintain a positive mental health. After her suicide, I realized how important mental health is. Since then, I have become an advocate of mental health awareness and suicide prevention at Georgia Southern University. I have started an organization on campus (Standing Together Against Nationwide Depression) aimed to bring attention to the effects caused by untreated mental health disorders. Depression is a rapidly growing problem, and it affects about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older. Statistics also show 80 percent of the people who suffer from depression have symptoms that go untreated. Through Standing Together Against Nationwide Depression, I have helped raise more than $23,000 in two years for mental health awareness. More importantly, we have brought attention to the need for more education on college campuses. Zeta Tau Alpha is doing the same. Behind Happy Faces (see pages 28-29) is a new program launched by the Fraternity to bring an understanding around mental heath. When I went away to college, I never thought I would face mental health concerns as I have. It is important for each and every college student to know help is out there, and it is essential to teach our members about warning signs and symptoms. I have seen poor mental health’s effects firsthand. I am excited to see Zeta Tau Alpha encourage our members to talk about our mental health and ways to help others.

Letters to Themis Summer 2014 Themis and Brand Identity Launch I am absolutely loving this issue of Themis! Everything about our new visual identity is perfect! Every detail has a meaning that represents what we stand for as a sisterhood. I loved reading about it and the history of our ZTA brand.

ZTA Executive Director 1985-2014
Deb Ensor In 1977, Deb Ensor traveled as a Field Secretary for Zeta Tau Alpha. While in Virginia, she had the honor of accompanying then National President Nelly Galloway Shearer and Vice President Collegiate La Verne Porterfield Skipper on a visit to see Ruby Leigh Orgain, the only ZTA Founder still living.
served under 13 National Presidents who valued her insight and encouragement. She loved and respected the fraternity/sorority experience and its ability to make a difference; her influence reached beyond ZTA into the larger circle of fraternal leaders and university administrators.
For decades after that visit, Deb would retell the story. “It was one of the few times in my life I was speechless,” she would say. “The only question I could manage to ask was: ‘Did you have any idea what you were doing?’ Miss Ruby sat up taller in her chair, put her finger in my face and said, ‘Young lady, we knew exactly what we were doing!’”
Whenever Deb would retell the story of meeting Miss Ruby, she would tweak a small detail or embellish the memory just a bit to give the tale new vibrancy. “Never let the facts get in the way of telling a good story,” she would say with a smile. In the pages that follow, using The Creed as our framework, we give you the very good story of Deb Ensor’s love for ZTA and its members, no tweaking or embellishing required.
Every day for the rest of her life, Deb knew exactly what she was doing—honoring the legacy of our Founders by living and demonstrating the values of The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha. Deb served ZTA as Executive Director for nearly 30 years before passing away from ovarian cancer July 18, 2014. Her leadership, vision and passion shaped the growth and development of the Fraternity. She inspired thousands of ZTA members to “Seek the Noblest.” She

To seek understanding that we might gain true wisdom... Deb’s legacy began in 1974 at the 50th anniversary of Beta Gamma Chapter at Florida State University. Beta Gamma was struggling with declining membership, but when National President Martha C. Edens met Deb, a recent initiate, she immediately recognized her potential as a leader and motivator
and asked her to work with National Council to “save her chapter.” Deb became Pledge Trainer (now known as VP II/ New Member Coordinator) and later President of Beta Gamma and restored her chapter as a leader at FSU.
During her college years, everyone called the future Executive Director “Debbie.” Many who knew her then still do, including former National President Nora Nell Hardy Jackson who was Vice President Collegiate II in those days and lived in Tallahassee, near FSU, where she too had been initiated. “Debbie was fun-loving and popular with her peers. People were drawn to her and wanted to do things with her. She and her friends always had lots of fun,” Mrs. Jackson recalled. As a result of her Beta Gamma experience, understanding why a collegiate chapter was struggling and having the wisdom to turn it around became one of Deb’s strongest passions. She traveled extensively for ZTA during her years as Executive Director, and her visits were often prompted by concerns within the chapter. While her arrival at a chapter may have
made members anxious and nervous, her visits always resulted in motivation, inspiration and a stronger sisterhood. Deb had an unprecedented ability to correct a chapter’s behavior while encouraging its members to change for the better and embrace ZTA’s principles by doing “the right thing, for the right reasons, all the time,” one of her mantras. One such chapter was Iota Omega Chapter at University of Maryland. In the early 2000s, the chapter had not pledged Quota or reached Total for a long time, and as a result, had a large debt to the Fraternity and Fraternity Housing Corporation and was at risk of being closed. Deb made many visits to assess the problems, create a plan of action and motivate the officers. In 2007, the chapter reached Total for the first time in a decade and earned a Crown Chapter Award in 2008 and the Becky Hainsworth Kirwan Chapter Improvement Award in 2010. Even then, Deb continued to visit Iota Omega to keep it on track. “Her visits were special; they were a big deal,” said Elise Hawkins, a former President
of Iota Omega and Traveling Leadership Consultant who is now Director of New Chapters (DNCH) for Lambda Kappa Chapter at Appalachian State University. “Ms. Ensor instilled confidence in us. She would tell us what we needed to do and trusted us to do that. When we succeeded, she would applaud us. Having someone that influential and inspiring say you can succeed is very powerful.”
To find satisfaction in being rather than in seeming... From the moment Ms. Edens recognized her potential, Deb chose to be a transformational leader. She served as a Field Secretary for two terms (1977-1979), an experience she cherished and that led to her hiring at International Office. As Executive Director, she annually interviewed the TLC candidates, often in airports or hotels as she zig-zagged across the country. Over the years, the job title changed from Field Secretary
to Field Consultant, then to Traveling Leadership Consultant, but the premise has remained the same: select outstanding recent graduates with leadership skills, provide excellent training and then send them from coast to coast to help our chapters achieve success. Deb’s advice to the TLCs during both training and travel left lasting impressions. “I always felt like I wanted to write down what she was saying because it was so good,” said Kristen Humeston Harthorn (Beta Phi Chapter, Michigan State University), who has served ZTA as Province President, DNCH and Mentor. “If you were with Deb on a visit, she always brought the chapter back to reflecting on sisterhood and why members were there. I have always tried to remember how important it is for a chapter to have strong sisterhood.” Deb’s influence remained with former TLCs after their years on the road were
complete. “When Ms. Ensor hired me to be a TLC, I never imagined the profound effect it would have on who I am and what I’ve embraced as my life’s work,” said Katie Peoples Zamulinsky (Theta Xi Chapter, Rutgers University), now Assistant Dean of Students for Fraternity & Sorority Life at Drexel University. “I thought working for the Fraternity was a good way for me to do something I enjoyed while I figured out my next steps. Little did I know my experience would ignite a passion for working with college students and jumpstart my career in higher education.”
Under Deb’s leadership, the number of consultants traveling for ZTA grew from just five or six in the 1980s and 1990s to between 10 and 14 in the 2000s. Since 2010, between 18 and 21 TLCs have traveled each year. No other national fraternity or sorority has employed as many consultants as ZTA in the past decade. As a result, ZTA has had the personnel to add or reactivate 16 chapters in the last five years, and during the 2013-2014 academic year, all 163 ZTA collegiate chapters received a TLC visit. Since 1985, 126 of the 250 eligible TLCs hired by Deb became National Officers.

Clearly, Deb’s personal interaction with the consultants resulted not only in stronger chapters, but also in emerging alumna leaders who remain involved with and dedicated to ZTA. “I was a nervous senior walking down the steps of the ZTA house for my TLC interview, and Deb instantly greeted me with a smile and threw her arms wide open for a hug,” recalled Carla Martin Cobb (Theta Tau Chapter, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), who went on to become DNCH to both Phi (Duke University) and Alpha (Longwood University) chapters. “With that hug, she went from Executive

At each Convention, she cherished being in the group photograph of former TLCs (pictured below) and speaking at the luncheon where, with the new TLCs seated behind her at the head table, she promoted the program to a banquet room full of collegiate leaders.
As Executive Director, Deb recognized the potential for further collaboration and urged all three entities to continue working together beyond 1998 for the betterment of ZTA. Thanks to this foresight, succeeding National Councils and boards have embraced this teamwork, furthering the reach of ZTA’s impact.
“This may be the hardest, yet most rewarding job you’ll ever have,” she would say, “but you can make an enormous impact on the Fraternity. Being a TLC will also prepare you for anything life throws at you. Ten years into your career, people will ask, ‘How did you know to do that?’ And you’ll have this job to thank for it.”
“Deb strongly believed developing friendships between the three boards would make ZTA a leader in the fraternity/sorority community,” said Becky Hainsworth Kirwan, President of the ZTA Foundation. “She could foresee that our chapters would thrive if all three entities worked together to provide opportunities for excellence in programs, service and housing.”

“Deb had her finger on the pulse of nearly every campus in the country due to her connections and stature in the fraternity/sorority world,” said Fraternity Housing Corporation President Julia Marthaler Hill. “Our board valued her knowledge and respected her opinion, especially when we embarked on major construction and renovation projects. She understood the impact housing would have on our chapters and helped us weigh all our options.”
The opportunity to learn those things that will ever enrich and ennoble our lives... In her dual role as Executive Director and Foundation Vice President of Development, Deb saw the opportunity for the Foundation to provide funding for values-based leadership development and education, and she engaged the Foundation and Fraternity in her vision. Her commitment to our Founders’ principles led to the development of groundbreaking and innovative programming over the past four decades. Early in her career, Deb encouraged the Foundation to develop programming about sensitive topics, including eating disorders, AIDS, acquaintance rape and fetal alcohol syndrome, and to sponsor a 24-hour crisis hotline. Under her direction, ZTA also created A Matter of Balance, a comprehensive program on time management; and Stand

In the last decade, Deb focused her attention on risk education and harm reduction programs. “Deb was smart, passionate, funny and tough; a big picture thinker and a great woman. She was more concerned about doing the right thing for ZTA than doing what trends and resolutions told her to do,” said Dr. Lori Hart, an expert on campus harm reduction and consultant on ZTA programs. “Deb had big ideas. When she was thinking about risk management initiatives for ZTA because policy wasn’t meeting practice, Deb asked me to help. Because of our collaboration, ZTA created My Sister, My Responsibility and, in

my opinion, became the first NPC organization to make harm reduction a priority.” My Sister, My Responsibility, a compilation of workshops on hazing and responsible use of alcohol, coupled with a series of posters co-sponsored by Pi Kappa Phi and Alpha Chi Omega, changed ZTA’s message and tone of harm reduction education. Their success led to ZTA earning 12 programming awards from interfraternal organizations in the past five years. More recently, Deb championed the development of the
Crowning Achievements academic success program and the Behind Happy Faces mental health program. She also pushed for the implementation of GreekLifeEdu™ as a required harm reduction tool for our chapter members and MentalHealthEdu™ for our advisors and volunteers.

her urging, ZTA shared our programs with other organizations and campuses. ZTA provided a copy of My Sister, My Responsibility to every campus with a fraternity/ sorority system— more than 800 universities. Through sharing, Deb created a culture of caring, and ZTA became a leader in harm reduction education. “Everywhere you look in our fraternity and sorority world, you see Zeta Tau Alpha associated with programming and cutting edge changes,” said Dave Westol, former CEO of Theta Chi Fraternity

“Deb knew that by supporting people and programs like AFA, she was building strong communities that would in turn benefit sororities and fraternities and the ZTA experience,” said Mari Ann Callais, former National President of Theta Phi Alpha, CAMPUSPEAK speaker and educational consultant to ZTA. “She created a movement of investing in the people who work with our members.”
As part of ZTA’s Music Committee, Deb would record music chapters could use during recruitment. During Conventions, the committee would also sing the songs live during performances of the recruitment skits chapters could bring back to campus.
Bonnie Wunsch, longtime Executive Director of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, was one of Deb’s dearest friends. They were two of the first female executives admitted into the Fraternity Executives Association (FEA), which Deb served as president in 2004. Bonnie believes Deb knew the strength of the fraternity/ sorority community could be measured by its weakest link, so she supported other organizations and campuses. “I truly believe Deb will live on through each of us. Her advice and role modeling will be a part of how we do our jobs,” Bonnie said. “Personally, I’m sure I will stop many times and think ‘What would Deb suggest at this point? What would she have done?’”

As a powerful force in ZTA and the interfraternal community, Deb was on a level all on her own. However, she always wanted everyone to know she was just another woman who loved ZTA and the sorority experience. The best way she knew how to do this was through music. Blessed with a clear, melodious alto voice, Deb sang at Conventions, National Leadership Conferences, special events and chapter visits. Frequently, she was also asked to sing at National Panhellenic Conference events. “Whenever Deb was singing, you got to see her as a sister,” said Malaea Nelms Seleski (Eta Rho Chapter, The University of North Alabama), Panhellenic Alternate Delegate I and one of Deb’s musical collaborators. “In that moment, she didn’t have to be any other role. It put her out there and made her approachable. It let you see the very best layer of Deb, the one where she got to be your sister.” In early years, her performances at Conventions were part of ready-made recruitment skits, including costumes, some mild and some outright comical. Deb had the dubious honor of portraying a singing cowgirl and a singing nun, even playing Sonny Bono while Malaea portrayed Cher.

“It was one of our greatest sources of humor, seeing Deb first put on her costume, especially if her role was to be played for comedy,” said Gloria Culberson Hice (Zeta Psi Chapter, Jacksonville State University), former Music Committee Chairman. “But Deb understood these skits were more than just entertainment at Convention; we were trying to persuade chapters to utilize the skits as solid recruitment tools. So, Deb demonstrated a character trait we need from all our sisters. She took the role that was in the best interest of the Fraternity and gave it her absolutely best effort.”
Deb’s closest friends since their time working together at International Office, gave her a huge hug. “I told her ‘I love you.’ She was able to stand up there and sing because she truly loved what she did and believed what she did was meaningful.”
In more recent years, the songs Deb performed conveyed the deeper meaning of sisterhood. She would often hand-select them based how the lyrics would resonate with her message. Just three weeks before her death, she delighted the ZTA Convention in Los Angeles with her singing of “I Was Here.” The lyrics now have a special significance to those in attendance:
“I started calling her that as a way of saying ‘I know you’re in charge,’” Nona said. “Then it became a term of endearment. Later, when everyone was calling her Deb, I could always call her Margaret D. to get her attention.”

Nona is now DNCH to Beta Upsilon Chapter (Kansas State University, but as Administrative Assistant at IO from 1981 to 1984, Deb was her boss, as well as her friend. She noted that Deb signed paychecks as “Margaret D. Ensor,” her given name. So Nona began to call her “Margaret D.”
Deb worked for ZTA for 35 years—an unprecedented example of loyalty and dedication. In fact, loyal and dedicated were the words most often mentioned when we asked our former and current National Presidents to describe Deb. Their other words form a mosaic of Deb’s leadership style. “A story of opportunity and philanthropy, of friendship and sisterhood. Part comedy. Part drama. Part love story. All celebration.” It sounds like the making of a great Hollywood movie. It is also the story of the amazing, lifelong experience you find in Zeta Tau Alpha. ZTA’s 52nd National and 41st International Convention may have been held in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, but it showcased how membership in ZTA is anything but a Hollywood fairytale. Sure, glitz, glamour, awards ceremonies and fun were involved throughout the week, but the 864 attendees saw firsthand that our real life sisterhood story is one for the ages. Convention highlighted the best ZTA has to offer— leadership development, sisterhood, educational programming, tradition, recognition and fun—starting with the launch of ZTA’s new visual brand identity during dinner on the first night of the event, a meal hosted by the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation. “Wearing the crown, like wearing our badge, makes us stand a little taller—a little more like royalty,” said

National President Keeley McDonald Riddle of the new brand identity. “Seeing the crown makes us think of the things ZTA means to us.” This recognition of what ZTA means was repeated throughout the week and as members learned about the brand. An educational session led Thursday afternoon by Extension Director Marlene Dunbar Conrad and Vice President Alumnae II Carolyn Hof Carpenter taught members the process behind determining the new visual identity and how to use it in everyday life. Printed Style Guides detailing the identity and its uses were also given to all attendees to serve as a script for living the ZTA brand. Thursday afternoon, words from ZTA’s brand research results also served as the cornerstone of the State of the Fraternity Address. Given by Mrs. Riddle, ZTA Foundation President Becky Hainsworth Kirwan and ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation President Julia Marthaler Hill, the speech highlighted ZTA’s accomplishments from the 2012-2014 biennium using the real words Zetas used to describe their membership experience—words that included: fun, outgoing, innovative, involved, classy and confident.

“What an amazing list of fabulous words,” Mrs. Riddle said in the address. “When we asked our members to help us explore how we might identify ourselves in the future, we discovered just how much we all celebrate what we have stood for all along. I think our nine Founders would be thrilled to know that.” In addition to the launch of ZTA’s visual identity, the Fraternity rolled out the red carpet for two new educational programs that live up to ZTA’s storied history of innovation. Crowning Achievements (see pages 26-27) and Behind Happy Faces (see pages 28-29) are ZTA’s newest academic achievement and mental health programs and add to an already stellar lineup of programs aimed to enhance students’ personal and leadership development. Alumnae also benefitted from Convention’s programming. In a partnership that began at Convention 2012, Phired Up Productions, a fraternity/ sorority educational firm, hosted sessions geared specifically for alumnae members, officers and District Presidents. Led by KJ McNamara, the two-part workshop focused on alumnae membership retention and how to make each member feel valued. “People join an alumnae chapter because they want to matter,” KJ said. “What keeps them coming back is lifelong friendships. You never outgrow your need for friends or a powerful female support system.” As the Fraternity’s official governing body, Convention also served as a time for business—not even Hollywood can run without a little hard work. During the Business Meetings, new and reactivated collegiate and alumnae chapters were recognized, policies were discussed, and a new National Council was elected (see page 18). As Mrs. Riddle retired from National Council after 11 years of tremendous service,
Mrs. Carpenter was elected to serve as National President for the coming biennium. Alicia Patten Williams, a former District President became the new Vice President Alumnae II. Like any outstanding Hollywood production is recognized with awards, ZTA offered plenty of recognition to our top-performing members and chapters (see pages 20-25 for a complete list of award recipients). Bonney Stamper Shuman (Gamma Pi Chapter, The University of Georgia) was also named the ZTA Foundation’s Outstanding Alumna for her entrepreneurial success (see page 19). The Recognition Banquet Saturday evening served as ZTA’s Academy Awards, complete with red carpet interviews and the receipt of the Fraternity’s highest chapter honors. Thursday evening, ZTA celebrated our sisterhood further as we welcomed Rachelle Douglass, an emergency room doctor and niece of longtime National Officer Nona Douglass Richey into the Fraternity as the Convention Initiate. During the week, attendees were also fortunate to take in poignant performances of the songs “I Was Here” and “I Still Can’t Say Goodbye” by Executive Director Deb Ensor, her last before her passing. As always, Convention 2014 served as a challenge for all Zetas to strive for excellence and make the ZTA experience a story worth sharing—from Hollywood and beyond. “Did you know you would be starring in an instant classic?” Mrs. Riddle asked Convention attendees. “Every single one of us in this room has a part in this movie … if we stay true to the purpose of Zeta Tau Alpha, we will all be stars in the classic experience that is Zeta Tau Alpha.” Fall 2014 · 13
Day One Brand Identity Launch
Convention was full of big premieres, and it started with the biggest. At the end of Wednesday night’s dinner, National President Keeley McDonald Riddle launched ZTA’s new brand identity. Each member in attendance received a T-shirt with the new brand marks, had the opportunity to take photos with specially-made banners, and utilized the social media hashtag, #WeAreZTA. Convention’s second big premiere was the launch of Crowning Achievements, ZTA’s new academic achievement program. Caroline Bullock of Iota Rho Chapter (East Carolina University) helped launch the program members were able to try while onsite. See pages 26-27.
Alumnae Crown Chapter Awards recognize chapters that maintained excellence in operations in the biennium. An impressive 161 alumnae chapters received awards this year. Alumnae Programming Sessions led by Phired Up Productions offered alumnae chapter leaders tips to show each alumna she matters. Chapters were reminded “Zeta Is Forever” and the alumnae experience should help every Zeta continue to learn and grow.

The After-Party Like every great Hollywood event, Friday evening ended with The After-Party, the ultimate ZTA dance party.
Day Four Fun in the Sun Zetas hit the town Saturday afternoon during free time to explore the city. A guided bus tour took attendees through Hollywood with stops at Rodeo Drive and The Walk of Fame. Other Zetas took the time to enjoy the beach and boardwalk with a trip to the Santa Monica Pier.

Outstanding Alumna Bonney Stamper Shuman
As chief executive officer of a thriving corporation, Bonney Stamper Shuman approved millions of dollars in expenditures. But one check, written in 1977 for $28.75, set the course for her to be named the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation’s 2014 Outstanding Alumna.
collegiate officer. “Some days you can juggle your life, family, friends, ZTA, school and faith well. Sometimes you are going to drop one of those things and that’s okay,” Bonney said. “My ZTA experience taught me this life juggle and contributed to my success.”
Bonney kept that cancelled check for 37 years and shared it with the Convention audience. It was her payment for recruitment fees at The University of Georgia. “One week after writing it, I pledged ZTA and never looked back,” Bonney said. “I quickly learned the value of relationships, hard work, continued learning, philanthropy and the life juggle.”
Four Gamma Pi Chapter sisters who served as officers with Bonney joined her at Convention. “I am thankful for the honor; for the chance to reconnect with many special, talented women; and for the opportunity to revisit such a fun journey that I’ve had since my ZTA start,” she said.
Bonney used the lessons learned in ZTA to team in 1983 with a fellow University of Georgia graduate to form Bar Code Systems. They sold camera-ready bar code art to packaging companies to track products. In 1983, bar codes were a virtually unknown technology—a seemingly meaningless arrangement of lines, spacing and numbers. “I wish I could now claim to have had an incredible insight into how this technology might truly change our lives,” Bonney said, “but I didn’t have that vision. I was just excited about a new opportunity and the ability to build something from the ground up.”
Bonney’s daughter, Mary Ellen, now a sophomore at UGA and a member of Gamma Pi Chapter, watched with pride as her mother received her award. “It is hard to put into words how special that was,” Bonney said. “It was a joy to share that moment.” You can read the full text of Bonney’s Convention address and the Outstanding Alumnae brochure on the ZTA website.
Bonney sold the concept of using Universal Product Codes to track products efficiently and accurately to major retailers like The Home Depot, Napa/Genuine Parts, Sara Lee, Federated Department Stores, Saks and Coca-Cola. In 1998, the company became Stratix Corporation with a concentration on total solutions and software products. By 2011, Stratix had 160 employees and just over $150 million in revenue. “Bonney represents all the qualities ZTA hopes to instill in our members,” said ZTA Foundation President Becky Hainsworth Kirwan. “Her loyalty, dedication, hard work and trailblazing entrepreneurship make her a role model for us all.” During the growth of her company, Bonney also served ZTA as Province President for six years and as Vice President Collegiate II from 1993 to 1995. Her alumna experience reinforced the lessons learned as a

Helen Margaret Harrison Award
The highest award presented to a collegiate chapter Gamma Pi, The University of Georgia As recipient of the Helen Margaret Harrison Award, this marks the second consecutive Convention Gamma Pi Chapter has been honored with the award, a feat it also accomplished with the 1982 and 1984 Conventions. It is also the sixth time Gamma Pi Chapter has received ZTA’s top honor—more than any other chapter—so it’s clear the chapter knows how to sustain excellence. During the 2012-2014 biennium, Gamma Pi succeeded in recruitment, pledging Quota, maintaining Total and initiating 99 percent of its new members. Chapter programming included fitness and environmental training classes, workshops on citizenship and voting, and 56 service projects that raised more than $125,000 for the ZTA Foundation.
Nelly Galloway Shearer Achievement Award The second-highest award presented to a collegiate chapter Gamma Iota, University of Florida A well-rounded calendar of events keeps Gamma Iota Chapter members ever striving to “Seek the Noblest” in all they do. In the biennium, the chapter held 48 service projects, which included tutoring local children in addition to Think Pink® events. Twenty-three membership enrichment programs educated the women on nutrition, anti-bullying and careers. A top recruiter on campus, Gamma Iota initiated more than 98 percent of new members and boasted a chapter GPA higher than 3.41 in all semesters of the biennium.

Top Awards Merit Award
The third-highest award presented to a collegiate chapter Epsilon, University of Arkansas This very large chapter—with more than 375 members—has found continued success in all areas of chapter operations and member engagement. In the biennium, Epsilon Chapter initiated more than 95 percent of new members, an impressive feat as it pledged 287 women. On a highly competitive campus, the chapter maintained a GPA over 3.3 during the biennium and saw its members become active participants in campus life. Members of the ZTA Foundation’s Founders Club raising more than $50,000, the chapter also hosts unique service events, including Princess for a Night with the children of local alumnae.
Betty McGehee Schuessler Award
One of the two highest awards for an alumnae chapter, for outstanding operations including support of a collegiate chapter Houston, TX Association It is said “everything is bigger in Texas.” The same can be said for Houston Association’s operations. With more than 150 members, the chapter offers something for everyone. It hosts daytime and evening meetings and 40 different events each year that tailor to a variety of interests and ages. Women also support their local collegiate chapter by participating in mock recruitment and legacy teas. Its annual Think Pink® luncheon is a Houston-area social highlight as it partners with a prestigious medical center to bring publicity to ZTA and breast cancer awareness.
Nan Barkley Boettcher Award
One of the two highest awards for an alumnae chapter, for outstanding operations where no collegiate chapter is present in the community San Diego, CA These women believe in adding a personal touch to membership. They make phone calls to local Zetas and set up carpools to and from chapter events. Beautiful newsletters, chapter website, emails, social media and standard mail pieces keep members informed. The chapter is also known for its philanthropic involvement. Each year, it distributes thousands of pink ribbons with the San Diego Chargers and at the Race for the Cure®. Each chapter meeting also includes its own service project, like collections for local children and military members.

Kay McCoy McKelvey has left an indelible mark on the Fraternity throughout her 48 years of membership. Through her service as a long-time chapter advisor and National Officer, she has taught collegiate members the value of alumnae membership and proven “Zeta Is Forever.” From 1994 to 1998, she served on National Council as SecretaryTreasurer. Upon her retirement, she continued to work with chapters to develop strong financial practices and immediately joined the ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation board of directors, in which she still serves as a Director-at-Large. Most recently, she became a Mentor for Upsilon Chapter (University of California, Berkeley). Every Zeta who has worked with Kay has been immediately struck by her genuine love for ZTA.

Z-Learning & Crowning Achievements Bringing the Learning Experience to You

It is the night before her paper is due, and she is only on page two. Along the way, she has put off writing her paper by answering emails, checking social media and hanging out with sisters. Kristin, like so many of us, is a pro at procrastination. Luckily, ZTA has a new, comprehensive academic program called Crowning Achievements to help us overcome procrastination and learn many other strategies to enhance our academic success. Lynn Compton Chapman, Vice President Collegiate II, says this collegiate program fulfills a key need National Council identified.
“We are excited to offer a program that supports the ZTA mission and that, we hope, will help our members grow as individuals and as students throughout all phases of their college careers. Right now, most chapters do group academic programming and incentives, but they have been asking for resources.” The Crowning Achievements program is the first of its kind in the fraternity/sorority world. It is a comprehensive, easily accessible academic achievement program that will assist collegians in the areas of organizational management, studying, test preparation, stress management and career planning. The program complements what collegiate chapters already do and is another tool for the Academic Achievement Chairman to offer members a wellrounded academic program.

Everything about the program was designed with purpose, including the title. CROWN in Crowning Achievements stands for five key tenants of academic development—Concentration, Resources, Own Your Goals, Wise Choices and Nurture Yourself. These are reviewed and impressed throughout the different workshops. Crowning Achievements includes online components as well as in-person chapter programs facilitated by the Academic Achievement Chairman. Online programming comes straight to members through ZTA’s new, online educational platform called Z-Learning. Sarah Wells, President of Alpha Chapter (Longwood University) said, “One of my favorite features is the interactive tools to find tips about improving study skills and outsmarting your procrastination habits.” In-person programming connects to what members are learning
online. These workshops include a Crowning Achievements kick-off at the beginning of every year, academic goal setting at the beginning of every semester/ quarter and a menu of other programming options. Each workshop includes a step-by-step facilitation guide and worksheets. As a member of ZTA, it is our hope that through your experience you are enabled and encouraged to grow personally and professionally. Changing the Conversation ZTA launches first fraternity-sponsored mental health program
By Hailey Rogers, Delta Psi How often do we discuss working out, eating a balanced diet and drinking enough water? Our physical health is constantly on the forefront of our minds, woven into our discussions and splattered across our Pinterest boards. Mental health, however, does not share the same spotlight. Zeta Tau Alpha seeks to change that with new programming. At Convention this June, ZTA launched a brandnew, cutting-edge mental health program for collegiate women, Behind Happy Faces. Thanks to ZTA’s innovative, forward-thinking leadership and a partnership with Ross Szabo, a mental health expert, we are proud to be the first fraternal organization to provide this type of programming. “Mental health challenges are unavoidable on college campuses,” said ZTA National President
Carolyn Hof Carpenter. “We think it is time to take action and create a curriculum to better prepare our women to manage their mental health while in college and after.” Collegiate chapters will conduct workshops using videos, web resources and engaging activities to begin removing the stigmas surrounding mental health. The focus is to help students understand mental health issues, stress and more; as well as learn skills to manage coping mechanisms and to help a friend in crisis. Mrs. Carpenter said, “There are so many issues that affect us—from stress to a break-up or a serious mental health disorder—and we want our members to know they are not alone. Behind Happy Faces helps make that possible.” ZTA’s goals for Behind Happy Faces include normalizing mental health and starting conversations that can save lives.

“There’s a large focus on getting college students to seek help,” said Ross. “Unfortunately, most people view mental health as a dichotomy. They think you either have a mental illness or you don’t need to seek help. This curriculum makes mental health more approachable. It provides the crucial steps to allow students to understand they are not alone and empowers them to talk to their peers.” When it premiered at Convention, Behind Happy Faces was received with excitement. Many students are not sure how to approach the topic of mental health. This program, the first of its kind, will empower members to take charge of their own mental well-being, as well as that of others. “As someone who had my life changed by loved ones unable to effectively cope with their mental health, I cannot express how imperative it is for ZTA to implement Behind Happy Faces,” said ZTA Traveling Leadership Consultant Traci Wiess. “I am incredibly grateful for this curriculum and appreciative of everything ZTA is doing to better the lives of others.” “We are proud to offer this type of program to our members. It will strengthen the emotional bonds in our chapters, encourage women to seek help earlier and help members support their friends,” said Mrs. Carpenter. “The conversations prompted by this curriculum will bring light to a subject that is usually hidden and ultimately save lives.” Like so much of the Fraternity’s inventive programming, one of the driving forces of Behind Happy Faces was ZTA’s late Executive Director Deb Ensor. Deb constantly sought ways to improve the lives of chapter members, and this program is a big step toward ensuring members can effectively care for themselves and others.
Ross Szabo Ross is the CEO of the Human Power Project and a leading mental health expert. He coauthored the book “Behind Happy Faces” and adapted it into a program for ZTA in 2014. Ross turned a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at age 16 into an opportunity to educate others. His natural ability to make difficult topics comfortable for large groups of people has led to countless media appearances and articles. He pioneered a movement of youth mental health advocacy and has created trainings to assist new speakers to reach their full potential.

Think Pink® Since 1992, ZTA has supported breast cancer education and awareness as our national philanthropy, and Think Pink® is the umbrella program for all of these initiatives. In February 2004, Think Pink® became a registered trademark of the ZTA Foundation. At Think Pink® events across the country, Zetas distribute pink ribbons and breast health information and honor survivors battling the disease. In the past 22 years, Zetas have distributed more than 10 million shower/breast examination cards, 11.2 million breast self-exam reminder stickers and 14 million pink ribbons. Pink Out Events Collegiate and alumnae chapters alike plan Pink Out athletic events on campuses and in their communities to raise breast cancer awareness. At these events, spectators—and in many cases teams—are encouraged to wear pink. Zetas are also on hand to distribute ribbons, honor survivors and educate fans about the disease. Scholarships For the 2014-2015 academic year, the Foundation awarded $703,041 in scholarships to 271 Zetas pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees. In each of the past six years, the Foundation has set a new record for the amount of scholarship money given, helping to offset the rising educational costs for deserving members. In the Foundation’s 60-year history, more than $7 million in scholarships has been awarded. Many scholarship recipients for the current academic year were on hand to be recognized at Convention 2014 in Los Angeles and are pictured here. “Imagine my surprise (and relief!) when I opened news of my Maud Jones Horner Founders Grant,” said Eva Woodward (Alpha Upsilon Chapter, Oklahoma State University.) “I appreciate deeply the skills I learned as a ZTA collegian and have carried them successfully into my graduate school career, in part, thanks to your financial support.”

For example, Alpha Chapter’s (Longwood University) Kiss Away Cancer event gives campus and community members the opportunity to purchase paper lips honoring a breast cancer patient or survivor. Donor List Traveling Leadership Consultants Thanks to partial funding from the ZTA Foundation, the Fraternity’s Traveling Leadership Consultant program allows for on-the-ground training for collegiate chapters in officer education, leadership development, recruitment, new member education and more. With an increased focus on supporting existing chapters in the past biennium, 847 TLC visits were made—a 20 percent increase from the previous biennium—with each collegiate chapter visited at least once. For the 2014-2015 academic year, 19 women are serving ZTA in this important role. “I have such a passion for personal growth, development and leadership,” said TLC Kayla Kaczmarek. “I aspire to use that passion to benefit the lives of collegiate women I will have the pleasure of working with this year.”

Survivor Recognition ZTA remains dedicated to honoring breast cancer survivors in our communities. One in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease, and the ZTA Foundation strives to honor those who have fought the courageous battle. At more than 140 Race for the Cure® events across the country, Zetas volunteer in excess of 50,000 hours manning Survivor Recognition Tents and pinning “In Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” back signs on race participants. ZTA is proud to be a founding sponsor of the Race for the Cure National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program. Today, ZTA and Bank of America remain title sponsors of the program.

ZTA and the NFL 2013 was a milestone year for ZTA’s partnership with the National Football League. Not only was it the 15th year partnership on breast cancer awareness initiatives, ZTA distributed its 5 millionth ribbon at an NFL event. To celebrate the occasion, teams across the league participated in our 5 in 15 campaign, and the Washington Redskins— ZTA’s first partner—had the honor of distributing the record-setting ribbon. To date, ZTA has partnered with each of the 32 NFL teams at “A Crucial Catch” events to bring breast cancer awareness to fans.

Beta Sigma Omicron and ZTA By Susan Beard, Delta Psi Patricia Cords Levitte, Beta Phi Archives Committee Co-Chairmen Any milestone chapter anniversary is a cause for celebration, and this fall, seven chapters will celebrate their 50th. However, these chapters each have a history more storied than a half of a century. You see, in 1964, ZTA absorbed many of the chapters of Beta Sigma Omicron Sorority. Beta Sigma Omicron was founded in 1888 at University of Missouri. Its Alpha Chapter had a short life, but the sorority quickly expanded to many of the same types of schools as ZTA did in our early years, particularly finishing schools and female seminaries.
However, when ZTA stopped opening chapters at these junior colleges and closing existing chapters to meet National Panhellenic Conference membership criteria, BSO did not, severely stunting its growth and development. Finally, in 1933—31 years after NPC’s founding—BSO made the necessary changes and joined the Conference. Unfortunately, the sorority was still unable regain its expansion momentum after the Great Depression and did not grow at the same pace as the rest of the NPC groups. By the early 1960s, the decision was clear; Beta Sigma Omicron needed to be absorbed by a larger NPC organization, a decision many other

smaller sororities had made over the previous three decades. It was at Beta Sigma Omicron’s 1963 convention that it celebrated its 75th anniversary and made the decision to vote on absorption or disbanding. Over its lifetime, BSO had installed 61 chapters, with almost 15,000 initiated members. At the time this vote was taken, only 13 chapters remained, and BSO no longer met NPC’s membership requirements. The vote for absorption was unanimous, and its national officers began the dismantling process. ZTA Academic Achievement Committee member Nancy Morris Roberts (Zeta Alpha Chapter) was a member of BSO and the delegate from her chapter at University of Evansville at that 1963 convention. She remembers being “very excited about it and knew it was the best thing for Beta.” Later that summer, BSO’s National President Norma Newbill Brooks reached out to ZTA’s National President Jane Shotwell Kerr (Beta Phi Chapter, Michigan State University) and expressed interest in our organization. Mrs. Brooks felt ZTA was very similar to BSO based on our founding, early history and membership. The discussion continued for months with the pros and cons being weighed by each side. On Aug. 7, 1964, the Grand Council of Beta Sigma Omicron met with ZTA’s National Council at ZTA’s headquarters, then located in Evanston, Illinois. The legal papers were signed that day for the dissolution of BSO, and the absorption process was scheduled.
Beta Sigma Omicron leadership sent this letter to the presidents of its chapters being absorbed by ZTA. It detailed the Installation and Initiation events and the collection of BSO ritual equipment. Not all of the remaining 13 BSO chapters joined ZTA. Three small chapters at urban schools in New York and Ohio chose to become local sororities, and three chapters at schools where ZTA already had chapters (Louisiana State University, Baldwin Wallace University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania) were released. Each eventually became chapters of Alpha Phi Fraternity. The first Installation of the seven chapters took place Sept. 17, 1964, at Samford University (then called Howard College), with Delta Psi Chapter becoming the first BSO chapter to join our ranks. The Grand Council of BSO was initiated into ZTA the next day in the Nu Chapter house at The University of Alabama. Each of the former national officers was allowed the privilege of being entered on the initiation roll of the ZTA chapter at the school where she graduated.
Within the next two weeks, the remaining six chapters were installed and their members were initiated: • Delta Phi Chapter (Millsaps College) Sept. 20 (now closed) • Delta Chi Chapter (William Jewell College) Sept. 26 • Zeta Alpha Chapter (University of Evansville) Sept. 27 • Zeta Beta Chapter (Thiel College) Sept. 28 • Delta Omega Chapter (Westminster College) Sept. 30 • Zeta Gamma Chapter (Youngstown State University) Oct. 3 All other BSO alumnae had one calendar year from the signing of the agreement to be initiated into ZTA as alumnae, and hundreds took advantage of this. This increase in new Zetas also led to the creation of alumnae chapters in cities where ZTA had previously had none. Many of these women, including Mrs. Brooks and Mrs. Roberts, went on to serve ZTA on a large scale. Mrs. Brooks served on ZTA’s National Council from 1966-1974 as our Extension Director. Because ZTA absorbed BSO, none of its traditions or practices carried over into ZTA. Instead, the history of BSO has been preserved in the ZTA Archives. A large amount of sorority material was donated by Mrs. Brooks in 1964, including documents, jewelry, BSO awards, and many bound volumes of its magazine, The Urn. Other members, like Ruth Ott Arthur (Alpha Xi Chapter, Indiana University), have donated additional items, giving us greater insight into BSO.

Founders’ Day Proclamation 2014 Thirty years have passed since Zeta Tau Alpha celebrated Founders’ Day with a Founder still among us. Ruby Leigh Orgain was the last of the little band of nine to pass away; she died Oct. 22, 1984. I was a new member of Theta Tau Chapter at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and wore a black ribbon beneath my carpenter square new member pin in Miss Ruby’s memory. Few living Zetas had the privilege of meeting one of our Founders, but those who did love to share their stories. As a Traveling Leadership Consultant, our beloved Executive Director Deb Ensor met Miss Ruby and joyfully recounted that story whenever she could. This year will mark the first time since 1985 that ZTA will commemorate Founders’ Day without Deb as our Executive Director. She passed away from ovarian cancer July 18. 52 · Themis
Deb had much in common with our Founders—a dedication to our values, a commitment to our Creed and a love of horses. Her father was a thoroughbred race horse trainer. The History of Zeta Tau Alpha records that Alice Grey Welsh and Helen Mae Crafford were both accomplished horsewomen. “She is the epitome of modern days: fresh, vividly alive and interested in everything,” Shirley Kreasan Strout wrote of Helen.
Deb’s death, Miss Ruby’s Legacy ran her first race—in Indianapolis—and finished in second place.
Vividly alive and interested in everything is also how we will remember Deb. During her ZTA travels, she met Ashley Amoss of Delta Kappa Chapter at Louisiana State University. Ashley’s father is also a thoroughbred trainer and helps his stable owners name their horses. With Deb and Ashley’s influence, a colt became “Seek the Noblest” and a filly became “Miss Ruby’s Legacy.” The week after

As we remember our Founders today, we will also remember Deb and pledge to run our ZTA race with the fiery spirit, grace and majesty of a thoroughbred. We will truly live Miss Ruby’s Legacy and that of the other Founders as we “Seek the Noblest” in all we do.
