that springs to mind when you think of Singapore, the small but incredibly busy South-East Asian island city, whose imposing tower blocks and eternal hustle and bustle never seem to end. But venture ten minutes beyond the mainland and you’ll find Capella, a spacious and peaceful resort on the island of Sentosa, where roaming peacocks, sweeping views of the South China Sea and beautifully landscaped grounds make for a heady recipe for pure holiday bliss. Set amid 30 acres of tropical rainforest, the Foster + Partners-designed resort is the perfect blend of old and new: two former 19th Century British Army barracks are flanked by contemporary curved structures that flow with the hillside. Capella is elegant, chic and eager to please – before your stay a personal assistant contacts you to to see if they can help personalise your time here, saving your energy for those all-important decisions such as which one of the resort’s three cascading pools to sunbathe by.

THE ROOM

S

pace is definitely not an issue at Capella and rooms, which start at 77 sq ft, are some of the most generous in the city. We stay in a luxuriously appointed Garden Villa, a one bedroom double-height villa with its own private plunge pool and outdoor shower – perfect, if you can ever drag yourself out of the kingsize bed or stop twirling around in your walk-in wardrobe. Aesop products furnish the bathrooms and in-room facilities include a Nespresso machine, mini bar with free soft drinks, BOSE entertainment system and a futuristic touch-screen control panel for lighting, drapes and temperature.

DINING

C

antonese fine dining restaurant Cassia, designed by famed interior designer Andre Fu, is an intimate space that sits within the hotel’s colonial building and is well worth a visit for its refined take on haute Cantonese cuisine. We sample its exquisite weekend dim sum brunch and are blown away with its quality. Breakfast is taken at the seafront-facing Knolls restaurant, which transforms into a Mediterranean-inspired dining experience for lunch and dinner. And if you can pry yourself away from the pool, the outdoor daybeds at Cuban-inspired Bob’s Bar are the only place to be in the evening. ◆

he award-winning Auriga spa is one of Singapore’s best. Its Organic Pharmacy Rose Crystal Lymphatic Facial, which utilises a lifting acupressure massage, lymphatic massage and Collagen Boost Mask, is incredibly soothing and leaves my skin noticeably nourished and restored. Massages are centred around the lunar cycle – New, Full Moon, Waxing and Waning Moon – are designed ‘to align you with the rhythms of nature’. Allow time to savour the spa’s invigorating vitality pool before hopping into the utterly divine peppermintscented cool mist experience shower.
