Welcome

Ask most people what they love about the Deepings & local villages and they will say “sense of community. The #LoveDeepings Campaign, led by the Deepings Business Club, recognises that thriving communities must have healthy local economic activity. Critical are good facilities, services, vibrant places to eat and to meet with friends, places to shop and enjoy. Local Trades and professional services provide employment, training and local investment. Most importantly many of these services are provided by local people with a strong interest and commitment for their Community. Many support local causes and help local charities too. Sadly, communities can dissolve into dormitory residential townships if the local economy is not supported adequately, as seen across the country. Hence the launch of #LoveDeepings . We have an amazing community and we want to help keep it that way! If you are a local Community leader a local business owner and would like to hear more about how the campaign can help you please come along to our launch on 7th May at 7pm. Contact info@deepings.co.uk for more info. - Alison - Deepings Business Club

NEWS Progress at the Signal Box rebuild is underway and Cllr Judy Stevens donated the third £330 of her £1000 discretionary allowance to help! Recent breakthroughs have included one by committee member John Clare who has worked out how the lever frame assembly works - a conundrum when Network Rail abandoned it sawn off! Former headteacher Karen Hepworth-Lavery has been recognised for her services to education with a Lifetime Achievement award by Peterborough City Council. Karen, who lives in Maxey, retired last summer after 21 years as the first headteacher of Heritage Park Primary School in Peterborough appointed when the school was first built in 1997. Heritage Park was her third and final headship appointment, with the school rated by Ofsted as outstanding in all areas following its latest inspection in March 2012.

SAVOUR EVERY MOMENT

Withdrawing socially is normal after losing a partner. But when the time feels right to join in again, local friendship group Nene & Welland Oddfellows say they can help make those daunting first steps a little easier to take. “There are so many wonderful things to get involved with locally. We’d recommend coming along to our Craft Club on Wednesday 8th May, it’s a great first event to meet new people.” To have a chat with somebody ahead of trying out an event, or to receive Nene & Welland’s latest events diary, contact andrew.spencer@oddfellows.co.uk or call 07729 519122 between 9.00am-5.00pm. The Deeping St Nicholas Community Trust recently ran their annual quiz at The Olde Bridge Inn, Crowland, raising around £250 to cover the expenses in setting up the Village Fete on September 7th. The Committee was set up by the Parish Council to provide a much needed village hall.

Gems & Jewels

ANTIQUES

by Kirsty Young BA HONS PJ.Dip MNAVA of Golding Young Auctioneers For many years jewellery has been prominent in all walks of life. In Victorian times, and much earlier, jewellery was used as a display of wealth with elaborate pieces being specially made and worn as a statement to all that the individual wearing them had wealth.

However, during the same period mourning jewellery was also highly sought after and this was more readily available to a wider range of individuals. The most common mourning jewellery was brooches which had a memorial panel to the back; these could also be inscribed with the initials of the deceased. Some of the more elaborate pieces of jewellery created during the Victorian period include the following highlights at Golding Young Auctioneers. This diamond star brooch sold for £26,000, along with the cameo bracelet which sold for £3,400.

There is also a high demand for Victorian mourning jewellery at present – the two examples shown opposite sold for £150 and £170 earlier this year. It is not always as expensive as these examples to collect jewellery. For many a more collectable market is what is classed as costume jewellery. D. Stacey Watchmakers & Jewellers A step back in time Dennis Stacey may have cut a diminutive figure with his shock of grey hair and gold-rimmed glasses but he was a commanding personality and added to the colour of the Market Place for many years. His double-fronted shop was meticulously cared for; dark brown wood surrounded windows that reached to the floor and every year they would be rubbed down and revarnished. Later shuttering would be put in place overnight. ‘Stacey Watchmaker and Jeweller’ was in neat gold lettering above the door.

organise events, and he was on the Board of Trustees of the Market Deeping Almshouses for over 40 years. He was the Trustee and executor to the two Sanderson sisters and oversaw the distribution of their estate. He was elected to the Town Council and later he fought for the bypass with local ex-policeman, Joe Smith. He expressed the opinion that ‘it is abominable that the people in Lincoln say the roads could stand three times the amount of traffic’ and he rightly predicted in 1984 at the age of 72 that he would not see the bypass built, as it was eventually opened in 1998, three years after his death.

But it was not unknown for him to order would-be customers out of his shop: a doctor at the local practice, some Americans to whom he took an instant dislike. But he was also known for his heart of gold; he helped set up the soup kitchen in Peterborough and he was also a Samaritan. As Pauline and Rob Redshaw put up the Christmas tree, Dennis would be there with cups of hot coffee laced with whisky of which he was partial to a tipple. He would watch the Carols from his window as he got older and would pluck pheasants for the Christmas meal while flitches of ham would hang in the passageway from a pig fattened by Jock Worsdell of Towngate.

Dennis was born in Wilton, Somerset, in May 1912 to Albert and Florence Stacey. Albert worked in a shirt factory. Young Dennis, though, learnt the trade of watch repairer that was to stand him in good stead for a lifetime, as a teenager with ‘Cousins’, a good-class business in Taunton. At 15 he was earning three shillings and sixpence (seventeen and a half pence) rising to four and six pence at 16, but with deductions for health contributions he was sixpence worse off. He would recount the tale of how he would mount the tower of the local church to wind up the30hour clock. While up there the Verger struck up on the organ down below. For devilment Dennis put his hand over the top of the pipes to muffle the sound, leaving the Verger wondering what was happening. Dennis took his hand away and sound resumed and then he placed his hand over the top again, leaving

A community stalwart, Dennis was a member of the Coronation Hall Committee where he helped to 16

the Verger in a state of bewilderment as to what had happened – he never did find out! After serving a five-year apprenticeship he advertised himself as a watchmaker improver in the old Daily News. He was offered two jobs, one in Ottery St Mary, Devon, the other at Drydens in Spalding. ‘I chose to come all the way to Spalding because they were a good-class county jewellers. The people in Ottery repaired bikes,’ recounted Dennis somewhat scornfully. With 27 shillings, carefully saved, he came up on the train from Somerset crossing London by Tube, quite a culture shock for a country boy. The rest, as they say, is history. He met and married Edna Sketcher during his five years at Drydens, then moved to Harvey Gills jeweller in Boston. It was here that the couple raised their family of two boys (David and John) and two girls (Jill and Anne) before in 1947 he bought the shop that stood proudly in the centre of Market Deeping from Fromonts the jewellers, premises that had once been the commercial hotel owned by the Newtons until 1916 when he moved across the road. Dennis didn’t drive and the family arrived in Market Deeping by bus! Next door was a wool shop owned by Mr Morton which on his death was bought by Dennis and Edna who took over the shop, ably assisted by Miss Branton until her retirement when Edna and Jill, Dennis’s daughter, who had left her job in Peterborough, took over. The living accommodation was very frugal, remembers Jill: ‘There was no electricity on the top floor where there were four bedrooms, there was a coal shed down the garden and the stove in the kitchen heated all the water. The long kitchen, bathroom, wc and playroom were all on the ground floor, along with a front room which served as a dining room. On the first floor were two bedrooms and the balcony room was the sitting room.’ In order to reach the

ground floor and the loo it was necessary to negotiate 34 badly lit stairs. But as you would expect, perhaps, each landing boasted a handsome grandfather clock! Dennis Stacey was more interested in the repair side of the business than in sales and he attracted a clientele from far and wide. Surgeons and doctors from Peterborough Hospital would make their way to Deeping and to Dennis. He carried out his repairs in a small workshop, formerly a pantry. He loved old tools and traditional methods and was sad that financial constraints had by-passed his way of working. He said

‘When I see a lovely Grandfather or old English bracket clock I think what a joy to spend two or three days on it. But you can’t work that way and make a living!’ As he reached his old age he gave away some of the tools he had bought as a young man including a Jacot tool used to finish watch balance staffs, driven by a piece of horsehair and whalebone and bought for just £4! Nothing was sold that was not of the best quality. With a reputation for replacing faulty goods without argument, Dennis wanted to ensure that this was not a regular occurrence. With a preference for silver he

would visit Sheffield on buying trips and Travellers would visit to sell their wares. One, Charlie Morrison from Francis Howards of Sheffield, would come to the area to sell in Stamford, Newark, Grantham and Peterborough and would stay with the Staceys for a fortnight ‘making a holiday of it’ and would leave a parting gift of silver teaspoons for the older grandchildren. Alec Bowles of Julia Isaacs of Sheffield would also visit, and Jill and Anne would each receive a silver charm. The family themselves though only once had a holiday together, a week at a boarding house in Skegness while for security Ron Frost the continued >

FEATURE Prudential Insurance man stayed and minded the business. It was a measure of the man that Dennis made a lifelong friend who became known as Uncle George from Derbyshire on that one week away. The family, though, enjoyed a Swallows and Amazons childhood, learning to swim in the river, fishing with jam-jars tied with string and playing in a boat donated by Girly Addy. Dennis had an account with Pelham Parkes who, among other items, supplied bikes. He encouraged sisters Jill and Anne and for every ten shillings they saved he would match it, until one day the girls came home with Margaret Holmes to find three bikes in the passageway which they learnt were theirs. They played marbles in the gutters and whipped a top up the middle of Church Street to school at the Green School. Uncle Sid Hare, the woodman from the yard on the old Co-op Jill Tindall site, would pop in on a Sunday and on the occasion of the Coronation the family gathered at his house on Stamford Road to watch on his TV. Electrician John Otter would call for a coffee every Wednesday and for tea prepared by Dennis on Friday evening. Dennis would attend Peterborough United Matches with Grandpa Newton from the Imperial Café, Dennis clutching a brown paper parcel which was a stool he could stand on to see. A tight knit community centred on the Market Place. Supplying sporting tankards became a lucrative part of the business, some annually for the Evening Telegraph fishing competition organised by Ken Sutton, editor of the Angling Times. In May 1955 200 players and friends were present at a social evening and dance held at the Coronation Hall by the Deeping Darts League. Dennis Stacey was on hand to present the Darts League Cup to the Wheatsheaf A team, and runners up were the Bell Hotel. A year later four teams of Red Cross Cadets tested their knowledge of first aid in Arthur Mellows Village College competing for the Stacey Trophy, donated by Dennis. Two teams entered from Deeping, one of which won, beating 18

Castor and Glinton who were third. All the Cups used in the Deeping Ploughing Match would be returned each year to Dennis to clean ready to be presented to the farmers who would travel from all over the country to the prestigious competition. Feisty Dennis Stacey certainly was. Memorably on one occasion, having tripped over the step coming out of the Estate Agents Norman, Wright & Hodgkinson, then on the bridge, the door slammed shut taking the top of his finger off. This resulted in the loss of his finger but the indomitable Dennis refused to stay in the hospital. On another occasion, after having a blood clot dispersed, he discharged himself from hospital after just two days. Dennis lived with a heart condition for 20 years, refusing treatment as he would not leave the shop to go into hospital. He worked into old age, after the death of his wife in 1984, helped by daughter Jill, after the wool shop had been sold to the Midland Bank. Dennis refused to leave the house unless it was to meet his friend and ex-employee Dave Ketteringham, who would meet him every day for coffee for at 11. Dennis had spotted Dave when he won a prize in an horological exam and persuaded him to do repairs and help with the business – a firm friendship was made. Dennis was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s when he died at the age of 83 in 1995. It was a tumultuous occasion and there was a furore among the whole community in the Market Place as windows and doors were tightly locked and Jill was unable to reach him. Doug Ellis, Dave Ketteringham and John Otter gathered and eventually John Otter gained access and Doctor Marshall pronounced him dead at the scene of a massive heart attack. It was what Dennis would have wanted, but for those that were left, it was the end of an era. Emma Lannigan Walks happy!

20

PROFILE FEATURE Toby demands attention – he is a Cyprus Poodle Terrier/Kokoni mix and is clearly the apple of Emma Lannigan’s eye! He was rescued in Cyprus having been abandoned as a puppy, flown from Larnaca to Paris and then on to the UK. For Emma he embodies the island she made her home where she enjoyed some of her transformational times, walking along the West coast line breathing in the azure sea and watching the sun, a big ball of fire, setting on the horizon. It was here in Paphos she developed an enduring love of walking which blew away the webs of acute depression and anxiety which she had fallen into during her mid twenties, whilst at the early stages of her career in marketing. Emma had moved to Market Deeping with her parents and sister, Caroline, while still in the early years of primary school. She attended Market Deeping Community Primary and later went to the Deepings School, leaving there to pursue a HND in Business Studies and Marketing at the University of Sussex which she then converted into a degree and postgraduate diploma. A London career beckoned, first in public relations with a West End agency in Rathbone Place. But Deeping called her back, as it so often does, and Emma came back to live with her dad in Langtoft; she joined the publishing and media company Emap (now Bauer Media). Then after a career break and a trip to Cyprus a marketing opportunity in Paphos came up and seemed too good to miss and she enjoyed an enviable life there for three years. While on a short visit to England her father died suddenly and Emma returned to the UK. She invested her time to retrain as a NLP practitioner and coach, Reiki and Holistic Massage Therapist. But the love of Cyprus was still in her blood and Emma returned, working as a freelance in marketing with a variety of interesting companies in interior design, finance to leisure and tourism. In 2010 she decided to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation through organising a number of events, shaving off her hair and walking the Great Wall of China. The walk was approximately 80 miles covered over five days. Emma recalls it was tough, especially on the part away from the tourists’ eyes where the steps were steep and uneven. She met some lovely people, blew some more of those

cobwebs away and the seed of an idea for walking and fundraising for the Mental Health Foundation was sewn.

Deeping. Whilst entry fee funds go to the Mental Health Foundation, walkers are also encouraged to raise funds by sponsorship for individual local charities.

It was at this time Emma wrote her book belifehappy. It embodies her belief that patterns of behaviour giving rise to stress and anxiety can be challenged by embracing the four steps: give, play, love and learn. These embrace the understanding of our balance of giving and receiving, to rediscovering fun and adventure and adding more ‘play to your day’; to taking time for self care, and developing greater self-awareness of thoughts and actions through self-reflection.

It is an event that aims to draw the attention of the community to the fact we all have mental health, affected by body image, life changes, physical illness, cancer, bereavement, redundancy, retirement, moving house, divorce and separation. There will also be contingents representing the Deepings Youth Group, Mindspace Stamford, Don’t Lose Hope in Bourne, Deeping Explorer Scouts, Kickass Ladies (raising money for PCH Oncology Unit) and many more.

At this time Emma decided she was ready to settle down and returned to the UK in the hope she would find her soul mate. Which she did! She met long-standing Scout Leader and Deeping lad, Steve Canham. It was the Scouting that made Emma want to know more and it was just the thing that Steve thought would put her off! The couple married at Normanton Church, Rutland, in 2014 and set up home together in Market Deeping. Emma continued to mentor business clients with marketing programmes and set up a permanent treatment room where she practised her coaching and well-being therapies. All the time, the four steps of her book would be running in the background.

Businesses throughout Deeping and the local area have been generous with their support including local estate agents Purple Bricks for donating drinks bottles to walkers (subject to availability), Empire Gym providing a venue, Orchard House Media for poster artwork and Tesco Market Deeping for providing free fruit. Charities and community groups have got involved too: Rotary and DSJ United Charities with funding, Deeping Explorer Scouts with route mapping and serving refreshments and Deeping LIVES First Responders for First Aid cover.

Having run a series of tea and talk events since 2010, in 2015 Emma took the step of organising the first Walk Happy event in the October when 14 people and a dog took to the streets of Deeping to raise awareness of mental health and to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. This was followed by another walk in May 2017, this time during Mental Health Awareness Week, when there were 46 walkers. By 2018 the event was growing in popularity and 85 walkers and several dogs put their best feet forward in a 4K or 7K walk around the Deepings. Not wishing to abandon the social networking opportunity of sharing tea and cake together, refreshments were provided as walkers finished the event. This year the walk has expanded and so have the routes; offering a choice of a 5K or 10K walk through the Deepings. Walk Happy takes place on Sunday 12 May. Entry fees are £10 adults and £5 under 16s with the sign-in point at 12.30 at Empire Gym in Market

When a group of members of Deeping Round Table donned superhero costumes and went to local hostelries collecting money for Children in Need little did they know that later on that same evening they were to give chase to gang of vandals through the streets of Market Deeping. Imagine what went through the minds of those that were apprehended by Batman and Robin! The story made the front page of the Stamford Mercury and the national press! So far so normal! The Deepings Round Table was first established in the Deepings by Tim Cox who bought the idea with him when he moved to the area

from Wem in Shropshire. Nationally the group had been established in Norwich in 1927 by Louis Marchesi to promote fellowship amongst young men and to ‘empower each individual to make a positive impact at home, work and in his community’. Open to young men between 18 and 45, there is always the 41 Club for those in their forties and beyond, and the equivalent Ladies Circle and Tangent for women. Tablers meet fortnightly when they engage in an activity – the scope of which is limited only by their collective imaginations. From sky diving to Morris dancing, there is virtually no pursuit that the group haven’t indulged in over the years. They were the founders of the Deepings Beer Festival later taken over by the Rugby Club, raised over

£300k over the years with a kart racing team, partook in the Beaujolais Run, ‘bangers to Barcelona!’ and a charity hitchhike to Barcelona – the list is endless! The group have raised funds for a house which they donated to Sense and have brought their physical prowess to use in helping actively with the DSJ entry into Britain in Bloom and in a variety of gardening projects in local schools and decorating tasks for families in need. Recently they have added to their successful Race Nights with Comedy Nights where they host a selection of nationally known comedians and play to packed houses. In doing so the group have donated over £45,000 to local good causes over the last five or six years. Want to brush away the cobwebs while making new friends and doing some good in the community? DEEPING LITERARY FESTIVAL

Heard of speed dating? Well, this is the Deepings Literary Festival version when you can have ten minutes each with an ace selection of eight local authors. It’s a free event at the Deepings Library on Saturday 25th May 2.00 - 3.30. No tickets needed. Books to buy.

Margaret Castle Margaret is the author of the novel The House on Stilts. She spent childhood summers on the coast of Lincolnshire with her cousins. One particular day she learned by accident of the tragedy that had torn apart her family in the winter of 1953. The House on Stilts is a fictionalised telling of that awful night, based on eye-witness accounts. Margaret has also had a story about working in a ‘school full of unruly children’ published in ‘Life’s Too Short’, edited by Val McDermid (Quick Reads 2010).

Sarah Bennett Raised in a family of bookworms, Sarah’s love affair with books of all genres has culminated in the ultimate Happy Ever After – getting to write her own stories. She is happily married and life has taught her that the best family is the one you create from friends as well as relatives. This is reflected in her books, which are warm and welcoming. Her best-selling Butterfly Cove, Lavender Bay, and the forthcoming Bluebell Castle trilogies, are published by HQ Digital UK.

Tony Forder Tony is the author of acclaimed bestselling crime thriller series featuring detectives Jimmy Bliss and Penny Chandler. The first three books are now joined by a fourth, The Reach of Shadows published in January 2019. Tony has also published his dark psychological thriller, Degrees of Darkness and Scream Blue Murder, with its sequel, Cold Winter Sun which appeared in November 2018. Tony lives in Peterborough.

Helen Claire Gould Helen discovered science fiction at nine and has written it since her teens. She met her husband at Peterborough SF Club and set up the Peterborough SF Writers’ Group. After graduating from Anglia Ruskin University in Geology and Planetary science in 2000, she taught Geology and Creative Writing evening classes. In 2014 she self-published her debut novel Floodtide, followed in 2018 by The Stallion and She…; her current WIP is The Zarduth Imperative: Discovery.

Ross Greenwood Ross was born in 1973 in Peterborough and, after leaving Kings School, lived and worked all over the country, before returning to Peterborough where he met his wife. They have two children. For four years he worked as a prison officer. His first book, Fifty Years of Fear, was completed when he was unable to go back to sleep after the 4 am feed. His latest book, Shadows of Regret, is inspired by his time on the women’s side of Peterborough prison.

MUMS MENTAL HEALTH

‘This Too Shall Pass’ As part of Mental Health Awareness month, local mum, Zoë Kornfeld urges other mums to be kind to themselves… The days are long, but the years are short. A cliché, perhaps, but, oh, how true! I have spent many nights over the last four years wishing the time away, hoping things will get easier. We are only a scroll away from some dodgy meme, telling us to ‘enjoy every moment’, but sometimes, when you’re in that moment, it feels relentless. Enjoying it all isn’t realistic. Being the source of food, warmth, comfort, entertainment, love, care and emotional support for tiny humans is sometimes exhausting, and you are allowed to feel like you can’t do it. You are allowed to feel lucky to be a mother, yet, feel like it’s too much and you need a break. Time changes when you become a mother. I have had days when I prayed that time would stand still so I could spend more time examining every inch of my babies. The same days where you feel like you could burst if you hear them giggle one more time. However, I have also had days when I have counted the minutes until my husband came home, so I could lock myself in the bathroom and cry. The huge

bespoke hormonal deluge, bestowed on all mothers, only adds to the tangible sense of ‘overwhelm’ that can creep up. Of course, you spend less time focusing on yourself – there’s a new VIP in the house who comes first, but it’s so, so vital to save some time for yourself. Time doing something that’s just for you. This could be walking, yoga, baking, reading, journaling, window shopping – anything that helps you reboot. Putting yourself first is not selfish – it is imperative. You are needed, and loved, and you matter too. We are not designed to get through our time on earth alone, let alone this motherhood malarkey, and even before our baby is born, many of us begin the campaign to surround ourselves. Another vital part of a mother’s survival kit is her ‘Village’ – her support system, who are there ready to catch her when she falls. Whether it’s searching out the support of a doula, signing up to an NCT ante-natal group, joining some online communities, or, of course, your own family, a network of those prepared to listen and share the highs and lows of your journey into motherhood are worth their weight in golden nappies.

So there you are, surrounded by your own Game of Thrones style, purpose-built army of support ready to take on the White-Walkers AKA unwanted-advice, self-doubt, sleep-deprivation, and any other enemies sent your way. Don’t forget to use them, involve them, tell them what you need from them. As hard as it is to admit that you’re struggling, one of the kindest things you can do for yourself is to ask for help when you need it. Apparently, my husband is not a mindreader… something I still have to remind myself of, on occasion. I try not to look at it as ‘I’m not coping’, but rather as ‘I am able to delegate’. As mothers, we are more often than not, the first port of call for our children, but if we are lucky to be co-parenting with someone who loves those tiny humans as much as us, then, if they’re anything like my husband, they will be desperate to share the load. Sometimes, our friends and loved ones don’t want to step in, for fear of doing the wrong thing, or making us feel like they are taking over. Let them help. It does not detract from how amazing you are. I remember being in my nursing chair, a few days into life as a mother of two, and as I was feeding my daughter, I was being spooncontinued >

33

MUMS MENTAL HEALTH fed some porridge by my husband. It’s no surprise that we call ourselves Team K – I couldn’t have done this gig alone. Everyone’s team will be different – perhaps it could even be that mum who you met at a baby signing class, who you thought was being grumpy, but it just turned out she got zero sleep the night before, had to ride a toddler emotional rollercoaster all morning, as well as an emergency ‘poonami’ nappy change, just as she thought she was ready to leave the house, but ended up being ten minutes late, only to realise she had baby vomit on her leggings! But, you recognised the same: ‘I’m not sure if I’m any good at this’ look in her eyes, and started talking, and now you can’t go a day without chatting – frequently messaging each other

words of support, in the middle of the night, when you’re both awake during a night feed – keeping each other sane. So, build your own all-star team and cherish them.

Some days you’ll feel like Wonder Woman, other days, it will take all your energy to keep your tiny human happy, fed and warm, leaving very little for yourself. Perhaps even leaving you drowning in self-doubt.

We all know life isn’t perfect, and, despite what a huge proportion of social media posts would have us believe, everyone else is not finding it so much easier than you. It’s easy to fall into the trap of wondering why other mums seem to have this whole parenting gig sorted. Trust me, they don’t! Beware of the sneaky ‘should’ – that makes us think I ‘should’ have a pristine house, my child ‘should’ be sleeping through the night, I ‘should’ be back in my pre-pregnancy jeans, I am so lucky to have such beautiful babies, I ‘should’ be happy. There’s no ‘should’, there’s just today, and there’s no doubt it really is a gift. But just remember, you are allowed to feel however you feel.

But believe me, you can do it, and you are doing it. Remember you are doing an INCREDIBLE job. In fact, tell yourself this on numerous occasions throughout the day – write it down on a piece of paper and blu tac it to your bathroom mirror if you have to, but remember. I bet you shower your children with love, I bet you tell your children all the time how amazing they are, and that they can do anything if they set their mind to it. Last week my three-year-old fell off his bike and scraped his face. Without thinking, I scooped him up, smothered him in love, told him it was OK to fall, and quickly encouraged him to get back on again. We must remember to talk to ourselves the way we talk to these loves of our lives. We must remember to be as gentle and compassionate with ourselves as we are with them.

RED KITE

High as a kite Better red than dead: how the Red Kite has soared to success by William Bowell The Red Kite is an increasingly common sight around the Deepings these days. Take a look outside, a drive around town or a walk along the river and you will usually see a large bird with a forked tail. Its chestnut body, grey head and white wing flashes make it a distinctive bird of prey and easy to identify. Their majestic, seemingly effortless, flight is such a permanent feature of our landscape these days; that it’s easy to forget that this species was extinct as a breeding species in England. During the early 20th century, in the whole of Britain only a handful of pairs remained in deepest, darkest Wales. Previously, in Tudor times, Kites had been common and widespread throughout Britain. They would have been a common sight even

in the centre of London where their penchant for colour would see them take hanging cloths to line their nests . Sadly, like all apex predators, they were soon seen as competition to humans and were slowly wiped out until just the few remained in Wales. It became believed that the entire population of Kites was derived from just a single female, as the population fell to below 20 pairs. The gene pool was limited and the outlook was bleak for this beautiful bird of prey. But this is a good news story. In the 1960s, the population rose to above 20 and the nation’s attitude started to change. A sign of a tolerant and civilised nation is the acceptance of fellow apex predators as they pose no threat. Red Kites are simply not strong enough to attack pets or livestock and actually prefer to scavenge carrion rather than hunt for themselves.

In the late 1980s the RSPB, English Nature and other conservation bodies teamed together to reintroduce Red Kites back into England and Scotland. They took young birds from nests in Spain, Germany and France and finished raising them in captivity in England and Scotland. Once old enough, the birds were each given their own unique coloured and numbered wing tags and released. It wasn’t long before Red Kites were breeding for the first time in the 20th century in England and Scotland. It soon became quite apparent that the reintroduction had been very continued >

35

RED KITE successful and in our area birds spread from the west and breeding in the Deepings occurred for the first time around 10 years ago. On a personal level, I remember my first Red Kite. As a birder, you don’t remember every first time you see a new species but the Red Kite is certainly one I do. It was in the late 90s, maybe early 2000s, and my father took me to Deenethorpe near Corby. I didn’t think there was any chance of seeing these mythical (to me) birds. But as we drove the country roads, there one rose up from behind the hedge. The colours and size were awe-inspiring. It was brief but rather beautiful. From then I have always been hooked on Red Kites and have even travelled to their former heartland, Wales, to see them swirl in their hundreds at Gigrim Farm. Now Red Kites can be seen daily flying over the centre of Deeping, their presence often announced

36

by marauding corvids and gulls. As they glide low across the chimney pots, they never disappoint and are always worth looking up for. Driving south of Peterborough on the A1 you may notice a huge kettle of them in the afternoon where they feed them. Individually they are super but as a collective they are magnificent. But this is also a cautionary tale. In the late 2000s the Red Kite population across Europe saw a drop. In Britain, however, it continued to go from strength and so it was decided to reintroduce British birds back into parts of Europe where the decline was worse. Our own history with Red Kites and the recent decline elsewhere in Europe should always act as a reminder that if we don’t look after what we have, as quickly as it is gained, it can be lost.

We are very blessed having these fantastic birds of prey on our doorstep and long may they soar high over the Deepings.

Will Bowell works at Grasmere Farm Butchers in Market Deeping but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/

Five mysterious facts

Sophie, Agatha and Poirot Saturday 25 May, at 3pm Priory Church, Deeping St James Sophie Hannah is a best million selling writer of psychological crime fiction, published in 49 countries. In 2014 and 2016, Sophie published The Monogram Murders and Closed Casket, both of which were national and international bestsellers. These were the first new Hercule Poirot mysteries since the ‘Queen of crime-fiction’ Agatha Christie’s death. Sophie’s latest Poirot novel The Mystery of Three Quarters was published in 2018. We’ve listed some mysterious facts about Sophie below, but there’s no mystery to solve when you hear Hannah talk about Agatha Christie and the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot at Deepings Literary Festival this month.

Agatha Christie is the world’s bestselling novelist, famously outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. With the blessing of Agatha Christie’s family and estate, Sophie has published three new Poirot novels. It is a brave author who takes on Christie’s mantle. Sophie said ‘The hardest thing was making sure everything about the writing, the story and characters were good enough for Poirot. He deserves the best.’

Most recently Sophie has published a self-help book – How to hold a Grudge, from Resentment to Contentment - The Power of Grudges to Transform your Life. What if grudges, when managed currently, are good for us? What if they can even make us more forgiving? Did you know it was possible to grade a grudge? The book is based on some of Sophie’s own personal grudges! It leads you to start considering your own… 38

In Sophie’s new Poirot novels, she creates a new character, Inspector Edward Catchpool as Poirot’s sidekick. She invented him as a way to introduce a new voice writing about Poirot. Catchpole is sidekick who learns from Poirot – which indeed happens in Closed Casket and the Mystery of Three Quarters.

Sophie’s current favourite Agatha Christie novel is The Hollow, a mystery puzzle with, she feels, the best discovery of the murder scene – ‘psychologically brilliant in so many ways’.

DEEPINGS YOUTH GROUP Jenny Spratt President of the Rotary Club of the Deepings, Barry Bedford, President of Oddfellows and Christine Sargeant incoming President of Oddfellows judged Youth Groups Got Talent - Josh Chalfont (pictured left) was the proud winner of a closely fought contest!

1970. The Beatles disbanded, Mungo Jerry was at number 1 for seven weeks with the optimistic ‘In the summertime’, and the Range Rover was launched, becoming a much-needed accessory for the Labrador. More importantly though, The Deepings Youth Group was founded, giving the children of Deeping somewhere to meet up, have fun, and more importantly, be away from the scrutiny of parents. Forty-nine years later, after another reboot, we’re still going strong. Headed by a team of nine trustees, each with their own strengths, the Group itself is run by the enthusiastic, untiring Cass Wales, and Sonni Sharma, her muchneeded helper. Currently running over two nights, on Thursday an older group of teens meet up at Wellington Way Scout Hut and on Friday younger children aged 11-13 meet at the traditional setting of the Cross School in Deeping St James. Whether you want to sit quietly on your phone, play games or use our recently donated top-of-the-range karaoke machine, there is always something to do. Cass comes up with a ‘themed night’ most weeks, the most recent one being a ‘Youth Groups Got Talent’ which saw the kids rehearse and then perform in front 42

of a panel of judges (selected from our Benefactors – budget wouldn’t stretch to Cowell). A top night, with lots of bonding, interaction and fun, and almost everyone is persuaded to take part in one way or another. Add in baking nights (‘Bake Off ’ type event),

traditional games nights, and the occasional disco thrown in, and you’ve got all the components for a great couple of hours, and all for £1!! Such is the importance of the Deeping Youth Group, and keeping our younger generation occupied (and more importantly, safe), that the Deepings Oddfellows Society has had them as their

chosen charity for the last two years, kindly donating large sums of money that they’ve raised, to keep the Group going. The Town and Parish Councils remain the main funders of the Group. In return for the generosity of the Deepings, some of the older teens showed their appreciation by helping with the litter picking initiative a few weeks ago, filling twelve big bags, before starting their night of fun and relaxation, proving that given the opportunity and nurturing, the up-coming generation has a lot to give! To help get the best out of the children (and to help Cass!) we are currently looking for someone to work with her on a Thursday night at Wellington Way. You will need to pass a DBS check, which the Trustees will pay for. It’s a paid position, but in fairness, the reward is in helping and interacting with the children. If you can dedicate a couple of hours every week, please contact Cass on casswales84@ gmail.com or call 07974524516 - Si Fox
