GLENDALE JUNCTION After 16 years in New Row, Deeping St James, Glendale Junction, the garden railway shop will be closing in the next few months. Brian & Caroline started the business in 2001 from their previous premises in Orton Wistow, but the business grew quickly and they soon realised they needed to move to a shop with more space and plenty of parking. They found their current property (house with shop attached – formally a hairdresser’s) in New Row, Deeping St James and moved in during October 2001. The business continued to grow even faster when they moved to Deeping St James. Brian commented: “It has worked perfectly having the shop connected to the house so that if the shop wasn’t busy, we could be getting on with office work or be in our home”.

The time has now come for them to retire. From the beginning of 2019 the shop has been open by appointment only and mail order from their website. This will continue to be the situation until they fully retire and/ or sell the premises. They would like to move home for the next chapter in their lives to be nearer to family and explore a new market town or large village, although they will miss Deeping St James. The house with shop attached is on the market with Newton Fallowell, Market Deeping with an asking price of £397,500. Business available by separate negotiation.

Welcome

What a month February turned out to be! Unseasonally warm temperatures saw all ages trying out the new trim trail at Jubilee Park! The first Harry Potter Day at the Deepings Library encouraged wannabe Harrys and Hermiones from all over the Deepings, (440 in all) to take part in a whole range of activities at the Library, from wand choreography to broomstick lessons on the car park! There was even an appearance from a real owl courtesy of the Exotic Pet Refuge (whose first open day of the season will be on Easter Sunday 21st April). A record amount of over £800 was raised for Three Shires Dog Rescue in the quarterly quiz staged by Di and Pete Wheatley. And as if that wasn’t enough just under 30 young people from Deepings Youth Group gathered to learn about Internet Safety with a presentation from PCSO Rowena Everitt and youth worker, Cass Wales. Proving that the Deepings remains at the cutting edge of topical issues. Meanwhile tickets for the Deepings Literary Festival are selling well. Have you got yours yet? Judy Stevens 3

Suitable aids can be critical in helping a patient recover more quickly after an operation or an accident. After hip or knee replacement surgery for example, it is vital to have the right height seat, toilet seat and shower chair so that the joint is not put under strain. Since this equipment is often only required for a few weeks, it may make more sense to hire rather than buy. Words of welcome from David Shelton, Market Deepings Mayor

Andrew Bowell, Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council

Further to the reacquisition of our Town Hall that I have reported, we are now having transferred two pieces of land from Persimmon Estates, behind the Community Primary School with opportunities for community usage.

Just at the start of spring the “Trim Trail” has been installed on Jubilee Park, a collaboration between the Friends of Jubilee Park, and the Parish Council. The Council is currently organising the Annual Parish Meeting to take place on 23rd April - a chance to meet your Councillors and to see what they do. During the evening the “Making a Difference Awards” will be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire. The awards honour people nominated for going above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference to peoples lives.

I have also referred to before the SKDC planned Deepings Leisure/Culture Centre, for which Market Deeping and Deeping St James Councils had a working party which produced a Deepings Requirement Specification. The Centre Proposal announcement will now be made by the Leader of SKDC Mathew Lee on 4th March. A new Town Saturday Market will be launched with a formal opening on Easter Saturday 20th April. Lastly, I am pleased to thank all those who will be coming to Nicky and my Mayor’s Ball on Saturday 6th April as it is a 120 ticket sell out already. SKDC/InvestSK have a table including the Leader, Deputy Leader, Chief Executive and InvestSK Chief Executive. Also many local businesses are coming, several having also taken whole tables. We look forward to a great evening on behalf of my Mayor’s Charities, Dementia South Lincs and Special Needs Support for children in our local Primary Schools.

At the moment the Parish Council are writing a Four Year Plan to set out their vision, identify priorities and the role of the Council in making this happen. It is hoped that this document will provide clarity of direction, and will help identify more effective ways of working together. It will also enable the public to measure the progress of the Parish Council against its priorities. The Council are pleased to support the SKDC sponsored Deepings Literary Festival 23rd-26th May and look forward to welcoming a programme of renowned authors to the village.

Call the Deepings’ Midwife It was over 25 years ago now when I had the pleasure to interview Nurse Aldridge in her cottage in Church Street, Deeping St James. There was chintz at the window, a warm glow in the grate and a choice of cakes for tea. I settled back into the armchair and listened to Margaret recount tales of her life as a midwife in Deeping St James. Born Evelyn Margaret in 1919, but always known as Margaret, she had two sisters, Violet and Eileen. The sisters were brought up in the cottage by their parents Kate (née Mumford) and Wilson, who was the Chief Mechanic at the bus depot in Horsegate. Margaret had memories of riding in the bottom of her grandmother’s wheelchair, a little like a wicker chariot – the small front wheel was attached to a rod which the rider used to steer the vehicle. One of the memorable occasions of her early life was being a bridesmaid to her Uncle Sidney who in 1923 married Clarice Morton, daughter of the Mortons at the Queen’s Head (the house where Eastgate joins Church St next to Black Cab Framing). She had worn a dress of white silk and carried a basket of chrysanthemums. She was a cosy lady and it was easy to understand why gypsy mothers travelled from miles around to tap gently on her window and ask her for help during their confinements.

‘Everything was always ready for the new baby and it was always spick and span.’

‘I can remember one family distinctly, it was during the fifties before petrol rationing had come to an end. I followed my father to a farmyard in Wilsthorpe, through a gate into a grass field and out through another, half a mile down a 14

track, and there it was: a modern caravan in a glade. A lorry was parked close by and several little faces bobbed up and down from underneath a tarpaulin. A log fire roared with pots of every description hanging over it. ‘The baby wasn’t quite ready but I hadn’t enough petrol to go home and come back, so I gave the mother a whopping great enema and waited. There were plenty of cups of tea served from the most beautiful china. At that time gypsies were moved on by the police after five days, so I made just three visits to the new baby before the family disappeared.’ Margaret’s fondest memories are reserved for the horseshoe caravans with their black leaded stoves, shining brass and a curtained area behind which could be found the beds. ‘Everything was always ready for the new baby and it was always spick and span.’ Margaret recalled wanting to be a nurse from quite a young age. Her mother had been a children’s nurse and her work had obviously had an effect on her young daughter. The year was 1937 and Margaret was just 17 when she started her four-year course to qualify as an SRN at Peterborough Memorial Hospital. ‘I went to Leicester City General to become a State Certified Midwife, taking Parts 1 and 2 of the exam which took six months and meant that I could practise without a doctor being present.’ It was whilst biking around the poorest parts of Leicester during the blackout that Margaret was befriended by one of her patients whose baby Carol she had delivered. ‘She treated me to egg and chips for supper once a week,’ Margaret recollected. ‘We remained firm friends until her death in 1992.’

Nurse Aldridge’s first job as a junior sister at Stamford Hospital was followed by a period at the cottage hospital in Matlock and four ‘glorious’ years at Sidmouth. In 1949, while back on holiday in Deeping, Margaret met up with her old friend and classmate Evelyn Hughes, now a district nurse. ‘It was Evelyn who persuaded me to come home and go on the District,’ Margaret explained. The county authorities at Sleaford awarded their new district nurse a moped. ‘It frightened me half to death,’ laughed Margaret, ‘so Nurse Lambert taught me to drive and I was given a little Standard. After that my car was changed every five years and I finished up with a Mini.’ The early 50s was an age in which not many had water toilets and the standard of living was not what it is today, but Margaret could remember no cases of neglect through poverty or cruelty in a village where she knew everyone by name. In 1951 Margaret married Francis Percival John Aldridge and moved to 65 Broadgate Lane. Francis was born in 1907 in Aldeburgh, Suffolk; he became a marine and diesel engineer, and was apprenticed at Blackstone’s in Stamford. He worked at Brotherhoods during the war years and completed his career at Perkins. It was at the old pub and lodging house known locally as ‘The Can’, that Nurse Aldridge was to experience the most dramatic moment of her career. ‘The building was thatched and it was felt not safe enough for electricity,’ Margaret explained, ‘so the landlord’s daughter-in-law was giving birth by candlelight. Mrs Shuttlewood, who was helping me, suddenly noticed that my dress had been caught alight by the candle! For a second I was in a quandary as to whether to dampen down the fire or deliver the baby!’

The first welfare clinics were introduced after the war. Held locally in Belton’s Chapel and in the dining room of the New Inn, now The Stage, Market Deeping, Margaret would take her own son John in his carry cot when she returned to her rounds just three months after his birth. ‘I think he felt a little uncomfortable that his mother had brought most of his friends into the world!’ Margaret chuckled. In Margaret’s early days the role of the district nurse was much less specific than it is now. Then general nursing, midwifery, health and social visiting were all in a day’s work. ‘At that time I averaged a delivery a week, though of course it was possible to have two in a night,’ she said. Gradually her workload declined, however, as the introduction of 48hour discharges from hospitals saw more mums at Stamford, The Gables and Thorpe Hall in Peterborough. Naturally enough this was unpopular with the district nurses who had derived much of their professional pride from providing a continuity of care from the early days of their mothers’ pregnancies until the end of their first year. ‘Some fathers were the biggest bug-bear against home delivery, but in my view there was much less chance of cross infection at home and I never had any fainting fathers,’ she said. 16

The many functions of the district nurse were eventually separated with the appointment of other professionals. This culminated in the division of the district nurse’s roles into midwifery and general nursing. ‘Just before my retirement, when my husband’s heath was failing, I took over as a general nurse, but in my last days as midwife I was delivering the babies of babies I had delivered many years ago!’ was Margaret’s proud boast! During the 1950s Margaret was one of the organisers of the Baby competition at the Rose & Sweet Pea Show. After the death of her husband in 1977, Margaret moved to the little cottage at Norfolk Villas in Church Street where she lived with her younger sister, Violet.

Spring Flower COLLECTION

Retro Renaissance with Kirsty Young Collecting items from the mid 20th century is an extremely popular pastime, from nostalgic buyers who want a piece of their childhood, to interior decorators who look for different items and the sharp lines often associated with the 1950s and 1960s, through to purchasers who simply want old things, that look the part and are often different from what we recognise on the high street today. Whether it be furniture or collectables, business booms for many objects from the 1940s to the late 1960s. It was a time of change, the wartorn 1940s and the recovery in the 1950s was replaced by the statement designers, musicians and film stars of the 1960s that are all key collecting names today. Take popular culture and say the 1960s music

industry, big names then command high demand now. Memorabilia became the norm by this period, autograph hunting changed from hobby to obsession and has become big business now. Often the big names command most interest so anything associated with The Beatles or Rolling Stones is highly desirable with event posters changing hands for five figure sums and autographs selling into the high thousands. Autographs of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones recently sold for £2100 and £1100 respectively. Basically names sell; anything used or worn by a star, whether it be Sir Geoff Hurst’s 1966 England World Cup Final Jersey, a Jimi Hendix guitar or clothes worn by Elvis - names and rarity create interest. Furniture design is similar. It was a time of great design from household names such as Arne Jacobsen, Joe Colombo or Charles and Ray Eames. Similar designs to the illustrated chair and foot stool by the latter can

still be seen in modern high street stores: this 1960 example realized £1300 at our Lincoln Saleroom. Design and desirability come in various levels and Homemaker pottery as illustrated for example, make great additions to any modern home. Bought for little, they are becoming collectable and are obviously useable and statement pieces now. There are a great many things from the mid 20th century attracting buyers. It is much more likely to see vintage and retro teak in homes than Georgian mahogany, people want to be different and the designs and trends of this era are certainly that. If you are looking for any such examples why not visit goldingyoung.com and see what our sales have to offer.

Debbie Dayley

& The Long Ears Legacy Lizzie Longton is half human and half elf and you can tell by looking at her ears – but that’s another story! Lizzie has been abandoned at birth when her griefstricken father took to his heels after the death of her mother in childbirth. Lizzie, who is brought up by her grandmother, is unhappy at school where she is ostracised by her contemporaries, the ringleaders of whom are the Bray twins. But lady luck smiles on Lizzie: she wins a competition and she and her grandmother are whisked away on a train to London where they board a Tube destined for a luxury hotel. In fact, the train takes them through a portal to another world, occupied by mythical creatures – some of which are the family of Lizzie’s mother! And so the tales of Lizzie and of spells and elves evolve into a captivating series of books, The Harp of Elvyth, The Dragon Flyers and The Light Knights. Debbie is currently working on the fourth in the series which will bring the story of Lizzie to an end. When you talk to Debbie, a sparkly feminine person, it is clear that she has been carrying this story with her for a very long time. She has always been fascinated by magic and the world of fairies and elves, wizards and witches and is an avid reader of Terry Pratchett, Robert Rankin, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. It was, however, tragedy in her personal life that provided the impetus for her to take pen to paper and to create her own world of magic and mystery. Debbie was a young mum with two children at Deeping St James Community Primary School, 20

commuting daily to a high-powered job in central London. It was then that tragedy struck. Her younger brother Russell, who himself had had pointy ears, was killed tragically in an accident and Debbie was forced to re-evaluate her life. She took a job at home instead, working with her husband Shaun, a software designer, and gradually started the journey of creating a world on paper. Debbie missed the hurly-burly of the south of the country; she is from Ealing and met her husband when he was playing in a rock band, Night Games, in the Rising Sun in Sudbury Hill. The couple decided to relocate their home to Surrey. To supplement the family income Debbie took a job at Nescot College in Epsom. Here she became an advocate in encouraging literacy and numeracy with SEN students and developed a passion for encouraging young people to read and enjoy books. So when the family moved back here it was natural that she should look for employment in education and soon she was working at New College, Stamford. With two books under her belt she continued to write, concluding the third book at the end of last year. The first book was published for Kindle only but people expressed a desire for a ‘real’ book and a screenwriter friend encouraged Debbie to ‘give it a go’ and to self-publish. So now her books, as well as being available on Kindle, are self-published under the FeedARead imprint, supported by the Arts Council and linked to Random House. Marketing is

left to the author and Debbie has become proficient at social media, using Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The books are now read all over the world and one of the highlights was a tweet from a Yorkshire schoolgirl, completely unknown to Debbie, who had gone to school on World Book Day as her heroine, Lizzie Longton! Now, having taken early retirement, Debbie writes whenever and wherever the inspiration takes her, whether that is sitting on the edge of the bed, in the conservatory or occasionally, when needing a change of environment, she will retire to a local café or to the Library to further craft her stories. With her own children, Max and Elenya, grown and pursuing their own careers in London, Debbie is already well into the plot of the final book in the series, which has a working title of The Shield of Elthur. Still pursuing her enthusiasm to encourage children to read she takes time out to take workshops in schools and is coming to the Deepings Library on Saturday 30 March, 1.30-3.00pm, where she will hold a Dragons workshop. Tickets are £1 and are available at the Library counter or call 01778 346528

You can find out more about Debbie and her books on her website www.debbieddaley.co.uk

Why Mum knows best by Zoë Kornfeld From the moment we are born, we start learning - our senses on overload, soaking up every drop of our surroundings. Early experiences form millions of connections in our brains and, of course, the relationships we have with those around us form a huge part in moulding who we become. Zoe and her mum, Ann One of my earliest memories is the view from my highchair, watching my mother busy in the kitchen. Fast forward a few decades, and I now have my own little “sponges”, watching my every move. Everything I do, and say, being soaked up and absorbed - the good, the bad and the ugly. I do sometimes feel a little overwhelmed by this, as it seems like such a weight of responsibility. Of course, in reality, we all know that there’s no such thing as a perfect parent, and along the way, we realise how much our children can teach us - about the world, about ourselves and about love. Even though she is no longer with us, my mother has even managed to teach me an incredible amount. Her life lessons have included patience, humility, strength, the value of friendship, the importance of loving yourself, and so much more. Without even perhaps realising it, thousands of beautiful seeds had been sewn in those early experiences, cultivated over the years, and have only recently begun to bloom. With Mother’s Day this month, I asked some wonderful friends to share with me what their mothers taught them.

Gemma and mum Maggie My Mum gave up her life to raise her children. She’s always been a very homely person and her family have meant the world to her. She taught me the two most important things that cost absolutely nothing yet mean everything. Time and love. She spent every second with us and did so much with us to ensure our optimal happiness. She showed us unconditional love and I have the warmest memories of this - the endless cuddles and warm smile that we were always greeted with when she entered the room. She put everything into us and still would do anything for her children. She would come on every school trip with us and even became a voluntary classroom helper at our primary school. Since becoming a teacher myself, Mum has still helped out in my classroom! It wasn’t until I became a Mum myself that I realised the unconditional love and selflessness that she showed when raising us. It’s now wonderful to watch her as a Grandma to my son who she absolutely adores! If anything she’s also taught me to be thankful and grateful. Thankful for the precious life we’ve been gifted with and grateful for everything in it. Thank you Mum for making mine so special x

MOTHER’S DAY

Lucy, and her mother Amy Jenny, and mother My mum is so kind Margaret hearted, loving and patient. She is my source of inspiration when I think how I wish to parent my own two girls. Her values have built a strong foundation in my life and I hope to pass these on in my parenting. I can always rely on her to listen when I need her and offer her words of support and wisdom when I self-doubt. She is beautiful inside and out, and I can only wish to have the same relationship with my daughters as they grow up. She has taught me to love and cherish my family closely and that it’s good to laugh when life doesn’t always go to plan. Love you Mum x

Whether she knows it or not my mum taught me the importance of being your child’s biggest supporter. She would always tell me she was proud of me, that I had done a good job, that I looked beautiful and so on. She still tells me those things today. Now I do the same to my children to try and build them up like my mum built me up to have the confidence to face the world. I have always known that no matter what, my mum is there supporting me, I hope my children know that too.

Alycia, and her mother Maxine Be who you want to be - I feel so lucky that my mum has always been my greatest fan no matter what! Yes, she encouraged me to try my best with education/ exams etc. but if I had told her I wanted to be a toilet cleaner she would have told me I’d be the best toilet cleaner in the world and backed me all the way. Be kind - there is nothing more powerful than kindness. It doesn’t matter if someone is rich, poor, old or young, treat everyone with kindness and smile. Be grateful for what we have - we are always striving for more but really when we sit and think about what we have there are thousands of other people who are dreaming of having what we already have. If you have a roof over your head, food in your tummy and the love and support from family you’re as lucky and rich as you could ever wish to be. How to be a mother - until I became a mother myself I had no idea just what the word ‘mother’ truly meant. It’s about sacrificing your last piece of your favourite chocolate because you know it will make them smile (and end up smeared all over your freshly washed jeans). Walking round the supermarket like a lunatic, with carrot sticks up your nose and spaghetti in your hair because it means they stay sitting in the trolley happy and not screaming. And being absolutely exhausted yet still finding yourself staring at their beautiful sleeping face wondering how you got so lucky. And finally if times are tough - a couple of glasses of wine always makes things feel a little bit brighter! Think of it as medicinal - she’s a nurse so she’s got to be right surely? continued >

MOTHER’S DAY

Megan, and her mother Wendy Firstly let me introduce my Mum, Wendy Smith, more commonly known in our family as Miss Marple. My rock, my number one supporter, and my right arm. I think as a child I was a Daddy’s girl, and to an extent I still am, but now in my 30s my Mum is the biggest best friend I have. Growing up she taught me to speak my mind - when appropriate! One of her funniest memories was ‘losing’ me temporarily on a holiday when I was about 8 years old. I’d left the hotel room and asked some teenagers down the corridor to turn their music down as it was far too loud. Being able to speak my mind in a constructive way has come from my Mum, along with the confidence to do so.

Promises - one of the only things in life that can’t be fixed once it’s broken. You can’t even attempt to fix a broken promise. A saying my Mum taught me but I live by it. I won’t promise you something and fail on that promise. She has a philosophy on life that just resonates with me and sticks with me. She taught me not to take life for granted and to do things while you can “because you can”. Mum has taught me many “life lessons” - always be kind, pick your battles, don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today, probably too many to list and talk about - but also practical skills. One of her fabulous skills is cooking and baking. I now make a mean cheesecake thanks to my Mum teaching me - and cheesecake is pretty amazing. Any flavour, you name it, she can make it and teach you how. Vital life lesson as far as I’m concerned. She still hasn’t taught me to make the best roast potatoes but I have an amazing Aunt Bessie for that for now!

What Katie did next ... To say that Katie Hand took to the National Citizenship Service is to say the least an understatement! Designed to make 15-17 year olds feel challenged and changed, engaged and empowered, Katie certainly embraced the experience last summer. Whether it was rock climbing or raft building, organising a sports day on Jubilee Park or devising a walking route from John Eve Field – Katie loved it all. As much as anything it was the team building and the making of lasting friendships that Katie enjoyed. And the Deepings School was a Champion School for the scheme last year, signing over 80 students for the four-week course. Mentors for the scheme in the Deepings included Izzie, a graduate in Drama from the De Montfort University, and Keira, who recently left Bourne Academy to study Drama and Spanish at university. The Sports Day on Jubilee Park raised funds for the newly installed trim trail. NCS, originally the brain child of David Cameron, is heavily subsidised by the Government. The actual cost of the four-week programme is £1,500 including a residential stay – for Katie at Nottingham University Halls of Residence – transport, food and all the activities. The participants pay just £50 with an earlybird registration fee set at £25! On 25th March representatives of the scheme will be back at the Deepings School and as part of their presentation to Year 11 students, Katie will be recounting her experiences. The culmination of the summer of the NCS for Katie was her election to the Regional Youth Board, one of 14 members from the East Midlands Region. As part of the Youth Board, Katie participated in five days of activities in the Kick Start programme. Describing it as the ‘best experience she had ever had’ Katie met young

Best Independent Craft Store 2019 in the International Craft Awards

KATIE HAND people from all over the UK, striking up firm friendships and developing a strong sense of perspective. The course culminated in a final assembly with Will Poulter, star of Maze Runner, which the young people had watched on bean bags eating popcorn as part of their experience. There were taster sessions where the young people were encouraged to ‘check their privilege’ and not to judge a book by its cover. With army trainers they cooked with army rations in the field on camp stoves and a social injustice course opened their eyes to the possibilities for their subsequent year-long project. Meeting four times during the year, the group of which Katie is a part selected mental health issues as their main topic area. They have already embarked on an email campaign to encourage schools to install gender-neutral toilets.

Katie herself is currently studying for A levels in English Literature, History and Maths. In her spare time she tutors younger students in Maths and attends ballet classes. She completed her work experience in Barristers’ Chambers in London, serving papers to the Royal Court of Justice and attending the Chancery London Central County Court. She was invited to a Women’s Garden Party at the Inner Temple last summer and participated with fellow members of the Chamber in which she was assigned in the London Legal Walk to raise funds to support pro bono work (not for profit). At an Awards ceremony organised by the NCS at the King Power Stadium, the home of Leicester City FC, Katie gave a powerful speech in which she explained how the NCS had developed her confidence and enabled her to take on some unique activities and projects including raising awareness of mental health issues. Not unsurprisingly, the Regional director tipped Katie ‘for great things in the future’.

Bakewell - a Deeping Day Out

The town has picture-book houses of honey-coloured stone that meander from the river to the Old House Museum in an English gentleman’s residence that tells the town’s history through eleven room sets. Built in the reign of Henry VIII as a tax collector’s cottage it was expanded in the Elizabethan period, and during the Industrial Revolution it was reused for mill workers’ cottages by Richard Arkwright, who had built his third cotton spinning mill in the town.

Mediaeval courtyards, secluded squares and a jumble of fascinating back streets, Bakewell straddles the River Wye and lies in the glorious Peak District, well earning it‘s title – the capital of the Peak – a perfect location for a day out from Deeping! With a quaint five-arched bridge that dates back to Roman times, a Grade 1 listed church originally founded in 920 but which was completely rebuilt in the mid-19th century by William Flockton, the town also boasts two ancient Saxon crosses which can be found in the churchyard.

No less than three shops in the town serve Bakewell pudding made to the ‘original’ recipe. The famous Bakewell pudding was invented accidentally at the Rutland Hotel, when a cook misinterpreted instructions and poured egg mixture over the jam instead of mixing it in the pastry, and what should have been a tart was now a pudding. The Hotel also has a literary connection in that Jane Austen is reputed to have stayed at the hotel whilst writing Pride and Prejudice. It is widely accepted that Bakewell was the inspiration for Lambton in the novel, and nearby Chatsworth the model for Darcy’s Pemberton.

At the heart of the town are the Bath gardens, beautifully maintained and an idyllic space in which to stop and watch the word go by. There is a colourful selection of cafes and restaurants offering drink, food and conviviality. A healthy number of independent shops include The Bakewell Bookshop which doubles as a cafe and an acclaimed florist, Sweetpea Macfie.

Deeping’s answer to Bakewell Tart served at Lilli’s Tea room and Cakery

Fortunately, all you have to do to savour the delights of this market town is to contact Impressions Holidays who will be visiting the town on 8th April and 15th July. 31

SWANS

The ugly duckling by William Bowell

Image: Candida Hopkinson

Everybody loves swans. They are a symbol of grace and there are many myths and stories surrounding them. Everybody knows the Ugly Duckling story. They do mostly mate for life. In the Deepings, they are a familiar sight on the Welland and often cause local discussions when they hold up the traffic with their apparent lack of road sense.

protection from a nearby road. This nest has been used for decades, perhaps not by the same pair as Mutes, only live for 10-20 years. However, when a mate dies, the survivor will find another mate and this cycle will continue so well-placed nests will be used for years and years.

We have three regular species of swan which frequent Britain but only one resident – the Mute Swan. This is the species we see on the river in Deeping and, amazingly, along Deeping Highbank there can be as much as one per cent of the total British population present in the winter. They gather in large herds which graze on the farmland and roost on the river.

For all the graceful virtues and symbols of love swans are often associated with, they are also known for their aggression. They will hiss and peck when provoked and although one of the heaviest flying birds, they can not source some kind of inner super strength to break your arm.

Image: Candida Hopkinson

The other two species of the swan found in Britain are visitors from the north. Bewick’s Swans are the smallest and have a black with yellow bill compared to the larger Whooper Swan which has a yellow with black bill. OK, that might seem like terrible descriptions but they are incredibly similar and both make a noisy whooping call.

In Deeping we have a couple of pairs which nest along the river. One pair has touched the hearts of the locals so much a small fence has been erected to offer some Image: Will Bowell

SWANS From a photography point of view, there are some great photos of swans taken in Deeping at sunset or sunrise. More than simply a big white bird, these birds appear graceful and serene and with good weather conditions, make for fantastic subjects. With spring in the air there are plenty of opportunities to photograph their fantastic heart shaped courtship display. Will Bowell works at Grasmere Farm Butchers in Market Deeping but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http:// justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/

Image: Candida Hopkinson

In our area, Bewick’s are barely annual however six are currently wintering along the Highbank with the swan herds. Whoopers are far more frequent but vary in numbers. This winter has been a good one with over 40 wintering along the Highbank with the other swans. For the best views and experience of these species a visit to the Nene or Ouse Washes is a must. Welney WWT on the Ouse Washes is famed for its daily feeding sessions which offer an up close and personal view of these beauties.

This swan is entirely depicted in coloured pencils by Su Donley. It is approx 38 x 40 cms although larger when framed. Framed with art glass by Black Cab Framing. Available at £240 contact geoff52su54@gmail.com

To apply for an allotment leave your details at asst. clerk.dsjpc@btconnect. com. It is £20 pa with an initial set up fee of £25. Plots are 100 sq.metres and often come available in early spring and October. Join the Allotments Assoc for a small fee and access benefits including discounts on seeds, compost and an annual BBQ with prizes for different achievements. It is expected that at least 50% of weeds are kept under control and the plot is worked as per the tenancy agreement.

The Good Life ‘Time to go down to the allotment’ would be words frequently heard in our house back in Blackburn, Lancashire almost 60 years ago as my dad headed off for his weekend retreat down on his beloved ‘ plot’. He would come home hours later laden with fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers for our family. Now 60 years later I have finally decided to take on an allotment plot of my own on the Hall Meadow Road site in Deeping St James. Plot 30B is now my own little piece of fenland soil thanks to Kathy and Julie down at the Parish Council Offices in DSJ. So for the princely sum of £20 per annum I will be attempting to grow a variety of vegetables and fruit depending on how quickly I can turn what must be said is a rather derelict and sadlooking plot into one of which I can be proud. Plot 30B has lain unworked since October 2018. Our first task will be to burn most of the wood that has been left on the site by previous tenants, cut back 36

an elder tree that is of no benefit to the site and to trim what appear to be a plum tree and a pear tree. We aim to generally tidy up the perimeter fencing and make the site at least look better. I have already been advised by a couple of gardeners down there that the soil is quite heavy and predominantly clay (not like the rich fenland soil I expected ) and so rotavating the entire plot is my plan initially, before throwing on to it countless loads of manure and compost as well as garden lime. There is a small wooden shed on the plot which will be treated, as well as fitting some new felt on the roof – cosmetic yes but essential to keep the shed in reasonable condition. I have already become a member of the Allotments Association, paid my £5 annual subs and sent off through them for my first lot of vegetable seeds which I have to say have worked out much cheaper than most garden centres. This season the plan is not to be too adventurous and to grow basic veg such as

potatoes, onions, beans, carrots, parsnips and outdoor tomatoes. There is certainly a lot of hard work ahead of us but with the weather already feeling spring-like I am looking forward to harvesting the fruits of our labour come the summer months. Already other allotment holders who have been on the site for a number of years are offering us help and advice as what to grow and what doesn’t grow well. There is nothing like some good advice from old hands who have been doing this for years! My partner Olwyn is more than happy to lend a hand on the site and I did notice the other day she came down to help she had no ‘wellies’ to wear so what better present for Valentine’s Day… yes, a new pair of flowery wellies!! Here’s to a productive gardening year. Dave Turner

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE AT DEEPINGS LITERARY FESTIVAL TO BOOK VISIT HTTPS://DEEPINGSLITERARYFESTIVAL.CO.UK/ OR CALL 01780 763203

Amidst the stunning array of talent at the Deepings Literary Festival (23-26 May), we have chosen five of the best for sheer variety and entertainment. Plan carefully and you can see them all!

Endurance Athlete Mimi Anderson’s book Beyond Impossible is well named and, like its author, inspirational. Mimi found her love of running at the age of 36, discovering an ability to run silly distances by entering the uber-tough Marathon des Sables in 2001 - with just a year of running under her belt. She has run across deserts and mountains, enduring freezing temperatures of the Arctic, the heat and humidity of the Peruvian jungle and the extreme heat of Arizona’s Death Valley. Along the way she has set course and world records and on occasions beaten the men Beyond Impossible shows what’s possible with drive and determination to succeed. Mimi is speaking at The Spinroom Studio at 7pm on Thursday 23 May. Tickets £5

Lovers of a good sonnet will find that comedy writer Lucien Young - once a member of the famous Cambridge Footlights company - delivers something intriguingly different. His collection of Shakespearean verse on such unlikely subjects as Kim Kardashian and Tinder is just one slightly off-beat example. Others are Alice in Brexitland and Trump’s Christmas Carol, and he has written for TV programmes such as BBC Three’s Siblings and Murder in Successville. In the grand tradition of The Diary of a Nobody comes the secret diary of the twenty-first century’s most unlikely leader: Jeremy Corbyn - a committed allotment holder, expert jam maker, dedicated manhole cover inspector… oh, and occasional Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition. Meet Lucien on Friday 24 May at 7pm in the Godsey Lane Coffee Shop. Tickets £10 to include coffee and cake. 38

Listening to best-selling author Darren O’Sullivan in conversation with Louise Jensen is not to be missed. Darren enjoys bestseller status in America, Canada and Australia with both Our Little Secret (set in his home town of Peterborough!) and Close Your Eyes. His third psychological thriller Closer Than You Think is due for publication soon and he is currently working on his fourth novel The Village. Louise Jensen is a perfect conversation foil for him as a million-copy author of global Number 1 psychological thrillers The Sister, the Gift and The Surrogate. Join their conversation on Friday 24 May at 10.30am at The Stage. Tickets £10 including tea/coffee and a pastry.

INNER WHEEL

Allied to the Rotary Club of the Deepings but with a strong identity of its own, The Inner Wheel Club was founded here in 1975 and currently has 20 members. An international women’s organisation founded in 1924 by Margarette Golding, there are now over 100 Clubs throughout the world. In Deeping the Club meets every first Wednesday of the month at The White Horse and has three objectives, to promote true friendship, to encourage the ideal of personal service and to foster international understanding. These aims are achieved through events which combine personal service, fund raising, fellowship and a common aim to serve the local community. As well as financial help members give practical support wherever there is a crisis; locally, nationally or internationally. The Club support The Three Hills Action Trust which in turn supports an impoverished village in Kenya, makes baby bundles to send to areas in crisis and this year the President, Jill Thomas’s charity is Neurofibromatosis - a genetic condition which can cause serious health problems.
