Welcome Nancy Titman has been part and parcel of life here in the Deepings for the last century! A great storyteller with a fantastic memory and a sharp mind, Nancy has been adding her own brand of wry humour to the tales that she has told of her childhood here in the Deepings where she was bought up in an old thatched farmhouse on the river. Without Nancy we wouldn’t know about the ghost of the Rev John George, of the oldest hot cross bun in the country or the myriad anecdotes of daily life which she has recorded in her book Swift to Tell and in the numerous articles and newsletters she has contributed to as part of the congregation of the Priory Church, Deepings Heritage and latterly the Deeping St James Local History Group. Nancy’s memories have been recorded in these pages and without her positive encouragement and steadfast loyalty it is quite likely that the magazine would never have been published. Many in the Deepings were taught by Nancy and have fond memories of her down the years, and along with Her Majesty the Queen we all wish her a very happy birthday!

Vehicles of all ages, colours and types turned up for the inaugural classic car meet at The Five Horseshoes pub, Barholm on Wednesday evening 26 April. It took more than a few April showers to put off the car enthusiasts from bringing along their classics that included British heartland favourites, American and European examples, campers and light commercials. The age-range of the vehicles on display ranged from the 1930s to more contemporary classics. Organised by Peterborough car restorer Mark Fishpool, it is hoped to hold further classic meets at the popular pub over the coming months. David Brown

You will have noticed the work being done to Stamford House as you have walked or driven by – now there is an opportunity not only to have a peek behind the blinds but to learn a little of its history too! Wealthy businessman John Perkins, born in 1802, was one of the large family of Daniel and Elizabeth Perkins of Sheepskin Hall. As well as building the Granaries alongside his home, Welby House, which he had purchased from William Laxton in the early 1830s, he had also had the imposing gothic Victorian property built at the top of Mill Lane, now Stamford Road. Intending to live in the smaller property as he reached old age, it was in fact his niece, Eliza and her husband James Needham who made their home here. The date-stone bearing the couple’s initials is still in evidence at the side of the building (pictured overleaf). Eliza had been born in Market Deeping in 1838, the daughter of Mark Wright and Ann Perkins. Baptised at St Guthlac’s Church she was also married to James here. A man of some standing, he was a Trustee of the Feoffee Estates in the 1880s and it was he who had been responsible for the erection of the Commemorative Tablet in St Guthlac’s for his Uncle John Perkins who died in 1879. James had come a long way for the son of a shepherd who in 1851 was working as an agricultural labourer in Melton Ross, a small village in North Lincolnshire. When John Perkins died he left his substantial estate, including the Granary, The George & Dragon and The Crown Public Houses in Deeping St James, to his niece and her family.

Naturally James, like Uncle John, became a corn merchant and maltster and continued to live at Stamford House with Eliza and their seven children ranging in age from James, born in 1863, to Maude who was born in 1879. They employed at least one domestic servant and at the time of the 1891 census this was Martha Whitwell. Entertainment was on hand with a seven-octave upright grand piano and the family also owned a large boat for messing about on the river. The house was furnished with some grandeur; in the bedrooms there were feather beds with iron bedsteads, one slightly grander with a Spanish half-tester bedstead complete with striped hangings. There were mahogany and painted wardrobes, dressing tables and washstands. The dining room chairs had Morocco leather seats and in the drawing room there was an octagon-shaped inlaid table. Above the fireplace was a large gilt framed mirror and, of course, only the finest cut glass was used. When the 1901 Census was taken, James was not at home but nephew Henry Perkins from Peterborough, a 30-year-old farmer’s son had moved in with them. James Needham died at about this time and Eliza moved to Eastbourne with her eldest son and daughter Sarah. J.G.

Medcalf was instructed to sell many of the household items at auction including a Lester’s Alexandra cream separator in perfect order and many outdoor effects, including bedding plants. This he advertised in the Stamford Mercury in March 1904. In July of the following year, the house was sold to Mr McCraith for £780. The house was described as a stone residence with a conservatory, stabling and grounds. At the same time he also bought a grocer’s and draper’s shop and house in the Market Place, which also belonged to Eliza, for £700. Mr McCraith was acting on behalf of Elizabeth Sawbridge, aged 70, a widow. Her husband, Robert Cooper Sawbridge Esq., a Canadian who had been a Captain in the Prince of Wales Own Regiment of the 10th Hussars, had died in 1886 and left his wife just over £5,500. Elizabeth settled into Stamford House with her daughter Margaret and two servants, sisters Eliza and Sarah Shore, who was the cook. Margaret won many prizes for her drawing and painting and in 1910 she won a special prize at the Lincoln Art & Industrial Exhibition. After World War I Elizabeth moved to Belgium to be near the many friends she had made while her husband had been overseas serving in the military. She died there in 1925. continued >

FEATURE Barnack-born Walter Soames then moved into the house with wife Lucy and children William, Millicent and Walter. Born in 1876, he was an astute businessman who had his own dairy business in Ecclesall, Yorkshire, by his 35th birthday and from 1909 the local newspapers showed he had been buying land and property in the area. In 1926 he was the proud owner of five cinemas in the district, the largest at Bourne, but unfortunately the Market Deeping Carpets Primo Ultra from Crowland Carpets. A high Picturedrome he owned quality heavyweight twist chosen for its excellent wear resistance and colour fastness had been destroyed by fire. Walter was an accomplished plantsman and was mentioned in the local paper in 1924 for his fine bed of spring onions, all one size and up to 1lbs 10ozs each! He hit the headlines again a year later to report that his son Walter had had a nasty accident when his motor cycle collided with a car, resulting in a broken leg. In December 1931 Stamford House was the scene of a grand wedding when Millicent Soames married keen amateur cyclist Frank Stockbridge of Little Gransden. She was attired in an ankle-length dress of white charmeuse with a matching coatee trimmed with white fur The sheaf of lilies she carried was a gift from the groom, and her headdress consisted of orange blossom and a tiara with a lace veil. Two bridesmaids, the groom’s sister Hilda and Kathleen Andrews, a friend of the bride, carried bouquets of pink and white chrysanthemums. Best man was Bert Cooper, a friend of the groom. As the couple left the church for a reception at the House they were presented with a wooden spoon by Master Peter Robinson. This was the last occasion of its size at the House as shortly after it was put up for sale by the Soames; it was now considered too large for the couple, the children having all left home. Local Councillor Edgar Dane Ferrer-Rowe was the next occupant, having bought the house for £925. 18

Now the house boasted electric lights and had gas fitted, dining, drawing and living rooms, six bedrooms, a bathroom with hot and cold water, two flights of stairs and outside a greenhouse and gardens. The son of Revd John Ferrer-Rowe, Edgar was born in Sandwich, Kent, and educated at Uckfield Grammar School, pursuing a career at the Bank of England. He had married Mrs Baker just a year before his untimely death in March 1934. Insurance broker Arthur Bissel, who ran the business with his three sons Eric, Arthur and Percy, then moved into Stamford House with the boys’ mother Sarah and their divorced sister, Nancy. The family were not to stay in the House for continued >

long and moved about 1941 when Norman Broughton Stephenson, an area investigation officer for the Ministry of Food took over the occupation of the house, moving just after the end of World War II. Mr & Mrs White bought the house after the War, running a company known as Ingelwhite Ltd. Ultimately the company did not thrive and there was a meeting of creditors on 10th February 1956 at 21a Bridge Street. By 1955 they had sold the house to Gwen Wilbourne. Gwen was a dancer trained at the Legat School who had danced professionally all over the country alongside stage greats from the days of Variety theatre. She had performed with ENSA during the War years giving her last professional performance in Mother Goose at the Embassy Theatre in Peterborough. She started the Deepings School of Dancing in 1955 with Stella Sutton and had three schools altogether, one

at The White Horse in Market Deeping, one in Stamford and the other at Yaxley. In 1986 she handed the Deeping St James School over to Marina Palmer who had just moved to the area. Marina had sold a large school in London where some of her pupils went onto the Corona, Peggy O’Farrell and Italia Conti Stage Schools, appearing in film shows alongside Ken Dodd and his Diddymen and Sir Cliff Richard in Summer Holiday. Gwen had also been involved with the Market Deeping WI and the Welcome Club which would meet in the Green School. Latterly she was a resident in the Laurels retirement home. After Gwen’s death it is thought that she left the house to a charity. It was bought and redeveloped by Neville Wright who was the famous local businessman who had run the successful Kidddicare and sold it to Morrison’s for £60 million.

Pat Brown County Cricketer Being driven the short distance from his home in Baston along Outgang to the Sports and Social Club where he would train with the Deeping Cricket Club coached by Andy Malton, the young Pat Brown would never in his wildest dreams imagine that he would one day be playing for the first team of Worcester County Cricket Club. Pat’s parents had been very keen that he and his sister should be brought up with lots of opportunities and so were proactive in encouraging out of school activities. Pat played football for Deeping at age-group level and also joined Market Deeping Cricket Club when he was around eight years old. In this he took after his father, Darrin, who was a keen cricketer. Both Pat and his sister, Niamh, learnt to swim before they could walk, inheriting a passion for the water from their mother. They joined the Deepings Swimming Club when Niamh was about eight and Pat eleven. Niamh had a natural ability for swimming and a strong competitive instinct and gave up dancing and gymnastics so that she could concentrate on swimming. She was successful in reaching County and Regional levels before calling it a day and concentrating on her GCSEs. Pat was selected to play for Huntingdonshire County Cricket Club from the Under 10s and stayed with them through to the under 17s. He combined cricket with swimming for a few years until it became clear that his passion was for cricket and he dropped football and swimming at this point. He would train 22

once or twice a week at Market Deeping Cricket Club and was soon playing for the Junior Team at the Club. Pat was playing in the Sunday second team at 13 and then was the youngest team member of the Saturday first team when he was aged just 15. It is probably true to say that his studies for A levels at Bourne Grammar School in Maths, Economics and Business Studies played second fiddle to cricket. However, Pat maintains that you grow up fast and learn a lot playing in a team where all of your fellow players are older than you, ‘I have always enjoyed sport” he says, “and you learn a lot about yourself both good and bad when you are under that pressure to compete at a high level.” The qualities of endurance and flexibility that swimming gave Pat have certainly given him a good grounding for his cricket, and the fact that he didn’t specialise too early has helped him develop into a better cricketer. Pat had been spotted at a Pace Factor open day at Wellington School in Somerset – effectively an open day for young fast bowlers who might have been missed by the first-class counties –and his potential was such that he was soon offered trials at six counties. But Matt Mason, the Worcestershire bowling coach, and Ross Dewar, the Worcestershire strength and conditioning coach (who also helped organise the trial), were among those in attendance and persuaded Brown to join them in the academy at New Road. He was offered a Cricket Scholarship at the University of Worcester where he now studies Business Management and made his Championship debut against Sussex during the 2017 season as an 18-year-old. By the end of the 2017 season he had played six T20 games for the first team and had made

four County Championship appearances, culminating in being part of the winning team on the final day of the season, winning Division 2 and promotion to the First Division. And what a ground Worcester have with a view of the magnificent cathedral, extensive development completed in recent times with a fabulous new corporate and members’ building looking out over the green sward on land that was once three sheep fields rented from the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral.

PROFILE

Pat Brown third from left, second row. Reassuringly tea and cakes are still served in the Ladies Pavilion and the ripple of applause can still be heard as the leather thwacks against the willow and the quintessentially English scene plays out before an appreciative crowd. Pat has settled into the routine of the Club well, training four days a week in the season and fitting his studies in around that; there isn’t time for the University shenanigans that are well documented elsewhere. Visits home are few and far between but

when he is back in the Deepings he might try and drop into the Fitness Factory which he would use back when he was playing for the local club. Now it is in a gym in Worcester that he likes to spend his down time, building up his strength and focusing for the game. Now a city boy, Pat loves the life and is enjoying the opportunities he has to see the world, recently spending ten days training in Abu Dhabi. He has certainly fulfilled his parents’ ambitions for him.

Monthly the sporting attributes of young members of the Deepings community are documented in the pages of this magazine, and it is with great pride that we acknowledge the achievements that are made on the national and international stage.

Mel Greville

Sarah Raven is now almost a household name. Her chic brochures on matt paper, flaunting bold and beautiful blooms in eco-friendly containers, are welcomed through letterboxes up and down the land. Her family were academics, and she herself was a doctor but now she is known for a dynamic and colourful approach to gardening attractive to bees and pollinators, a champion of nectar rich flowers which had previously fallen from grace. Why Sarah Raven? I hear you ask. Is she an acolyte of the Deepings? No! But actually in this locality we are harbouring our very own Sarah in a tucked-away part of Peakirk with the church close by. Mel Greville of The Wild Garden, as the name suggests, is not one for neatly manicured lawns and show-perfect blooms but her garden is a haven for hedgehogs, for birds and bees, where companion planting is much more

THE WILD GARDEN

likely to be the order of the day than the use of pesticides. Setting up home with her husband and two daughters in what used to be a bakery, with the old oven still in evidence, the house was the village post office in the early 1900s, later becoming a fish and chip shop after the Second World War. The garden is extensive and the outbuildings perfect for harvesting and creating the natural and artistic arrangements for which Mel is becoming renowned. Starting off studying accountancy Mel quickly jettisoned this in favour of horticulture and, as they say, the rest is history! Training at Notcutts and with the RHS, Mel most enjoyed her time at the Helpston Garden Centre but with the birth of her girls, she cleared a small part of her garden and gradually her cutting garden was born. Attending several courses in floristry, Mel uses seasonal flowers for her work, cutting down on air miles and largely rejecting the use of outof-season flowers raised in far-off continents in favour of organic blooms which, if not raised continued >

THE WILD GARDEN herself, are supplemented by those grown by other British growers, especially in the winter. Her posies, neatly arranged in jam jars with gingham ribbons around the neck, contrast with the extravagant creations for weddings and other events,. Her weekly bunches are a welcome feature at the Northborough Post Office, wrapped stylishly in brown paper fastened with her own label and costing just ÂŁ8.50. She crafts decadent winter wreaths using foraged pine cones, seedheads and berries and then in the dark days of winter the delicate paper whites she sources from the south west can be found with grape hyacinths displayed with interesting branches she has cut in the garden. As you read this the aquilegias will be giving way to a mass of sweet williams, sweet rocket and foxgloves. As summer gathers speed there will be cornflowers, love-in-the -mist and sweet peas. An English country garden, no less, in our midst!

Tractor run drama! The annual tractor run organised by Newborough Young Farmers hit the national headlines this year for very unexpected reason! The run came to an abrupt halt when mumto-be Amy Fisher from Market Deepiing was held up in the convoy as she was being taken to hospital by husband Paul. She said, ‘The contractions were coming pretty frequently and I was screaming with pain and Paul could see we were about ten cars back from the roundabout where police on motorbikes were holding traffic to allow the enormous column of tractors to pass!’ Quick-thinking Paul flagged down a motorcyclist who was able to go to the front of the queue and talk to one of the police outriders. The helpful bobby came back to the

TRACTOR RUN

car and having ascertained that Amy was in fact in labour told Paul to follow him. With sirens and lights blaring he was able to open the roundabout for long enough to allow the car through. ‘He escorted us pretty much all of the way though to Peterborough City Hospital,’ reflects Amy. ‘I was very grateful indeed.’ Baby Kylo emerged into the world a few hours later weighing in at a healthy 7lbs and 4ozs to join sister Sky. Event organiser for the Young Farmers, Charles Parkinson from Essendine, said, ‘This event is becoming more popular but this year it has been made particularly noteworthy because of the birth of baby Kylo! We look forward to him cutting the ribbon at the start of the event next year!’Farm—Thorney Park Park Farm—Thorney

A Vision for the Countryside

NATURE

Richard Astle reports

When the Langdyke Countryside Trust was set up in 1999, a core group of four residents of Etton and Helpston had a vision to make a difference to the countryside around them and to take action to halt the losses in local biodiversity and to encourage more local people to understand and enjoy the rich world of nature all around us. Today the Trust has over 170 household members, manages nearly 180 acres of land across six nature reserves and owns its own flock of 104 sheep! And it has a very clear vision for the future of the countryside between Peterborough, Stamford and the Rivers Nene and Welland. That vision is as follows

Small copper butterfly

We want to work with others to ensure that we conserve the beauty of our landscape and our heritage and establish an area characterised by • Outstanding natural biodiversity through major habitat restoration connected through a mosaic of smaller wildlife havens and corridors • Unspoilt countryside that is used by local people and the people of an expanding Peterborough, providing them with a large area of unspoilt countryside on their door step. • Cycle paths, footways and ‘quiet roads’ – a green transport infrastructure - where priority is given to walkers and riders. • Well-kept heritage sites, accessible to all and working together to involve and attract visitors • Prosperous and successful farming, profiting from a combination of environmentally friendly farming practice, sustainable tourism and recreational activities Our six nature reserves are central to the achievement of this Vision. We purchased our first reserve, Swaddywell Pit, Helpston in 2005. John Clare wrote two of his most famous poems about the site and

it became one of the very first nature reserves in the country in 1915, before being destroyed through a combination of quarrying and land-fill tipping! It is now recovering its former glory fast and is a great place to visit in June and July when hundreds of orchids cover the field and dragonflies and rare butterflies such as the grizzled skipper buzz around the pit. Torpel Manor Field, also near Helpston, is a scheduled ancient monument, the site of a Norman manor house, with the bumps and humps still there to intrigue the visitor. It was bought by the Trust in 2009 and formed the heart of an exciting Heritage Lottery Fund project with the University of York to uncover its history – all of which was written up in ‘Torpel the Biography of the Landscape’, published last year.

gulls are nesting and making their presence known! Look out too for brown hares in the meadows and even the rare water vole in the ditches. Cuckoos and turtle doves, increasingly rare elsewhere, can still be heard and seen on the reserve in the summer and orchids are rapidly spreading across the site. Since 2012 the Trust has also been busy creating community allotments and orchards on land at Etton High Meadow – an oasis of meadows and hedges in an intensively farmed area and has just this month taken control of Vergette Wood-Meadow another 15 acres of grassland flooded trees, just across the road, making Brown hare a large block of wildlife friendly habitat. We are currently looking at improving public access to both sites, so that more people can enjoy them. Already barn owls hunt over the land and the small falcon, the hobby can be seen overhead.

Barn owl

Finally, the Trust also leases land off National Grid at Bainton Heath, behind the fisheries, which we manage with a particular focus on improving habitat for butterflies, dragonflies and a very selective group of lichens and mosses! Like Swaddywell, Bainton Heath is another former land-fill site, the home of debris from the Blitz covered over with ash from power stations – making it an intriguing and unique landscape and habitat! When the rabbits dig their holes it is ash and clinker that comes up, not soil!

Jacob sheep

Full details of how to access the sites are on the Trust’s website – www. langdyke.org.uk The Trust is always looking for more people to help with the achievement of this Vision and we have four local groups committed to working together in that cause. The groups have a great track record – creating a community orchard and allotments; encouraging the return of several species of rare orchid; setting up bee hives; and through our Heritage Group, publishing books on local history. So if you support our vision for the future and want to get involved do get in touch with our group leaders as follows • LCT South – Castor, Ailsworth, Sutton – Mike Horne michael.horne@hotmail.co.uk • LCT East – Maxey, Glinton, Etton – David Cowcill dcowcill@aol.com • LCT West – Helpston, Ashton, Bainton, Marholm – Chris Topper c.topper@btinternet.com • LCT Barnack/Ufford – Michael Jarman - langdyke@fbhh.org.uk • LCT Heritage and Archaeology Group – Mike Clatworthy mikeclatworthy@hotmail.co.uk You can also keep in touch with us via Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/langdyketrust/ Illustrations by Ivan Cumberpatch

RECIPE

Short and sweet!

Catch fresh local asparagus in season! Working closely with Will Frankgate, Mark Tomeo is the new Head Chef at the Bluebell at Glinton. As his name suggests Mark’s father is from the Lazio region of Italy and while he was influenced by Italian cuisine, it was his Mum who first drew him into cookery with her love of baking cakes which she passed on to the young Mark, who started baking his own cakes from the age of ten.

containing Vitamin K and Vitamin C which boosts the immune system. A mild diuretic, asparagus is thought to detoxify the body and it is said improves the libido and can even help hangovers!

Earning his spurs at the Institute of Directors in London, Mark has worked at The Bull in Peterborough and The Lodge at Old Hunstanton since moving from his home in Tottenham, North London, to Deeping St Nicholas nearly 20 years ago.

For the wild garlic pesto, Mark took a handful of washed wild garlic which he combined with a small bunch of curly parsley, 60g of toasted pine nuts, 60g of grated parmesan, I teaspoon of lemon juice, a pinch of salt and a pinch of black pepper. Having blitzed this is a food processor for a minute or two until all were blended, Mark then slowly added 150ml light olive oil to combine. This was then set aside while the asparagus was prepared.

The growing of asparagus is a labour of love, each spear harvested by hand when it is just the right height. The season is short and sweet but worth the wait as asparagus is packed full of goodness,

Mark chose to combine this dish with the flavours of spring, wild garlic pesto, poached duck egg, fresh peas and topped with crispy pancetta and Pecorino shavings.

continued >

39

RECIPE Remove the ends of a bunch of asparagus peeling the bark off until half way up the stem, Mark blanched these for three minutes in boiling salted water. Podded fresh peas can be added in with the asparagus together for three minutes. Then he poached two shelled duck eggs in boiling water with a tablespoon of vinegar, turning the temperature down to allow it to simmer not boil for four minutes. Expertly Mark then swirled the wild garlic pesto onto a plate and deftly arranged a trellis of asparagus spears with the duck egg on top. The peas were spooned carefully around the dish and then the lightly grilled pancetta, broken in two, was added on top. The dish was then ready to be decorated with pea shoots which can be found in most large supermarkets. Voila! Another triumph from the Bluebell at Glinton and what you would expect from a gastro pub with stellar credentials, including a mention in the 2018 Michelin Guide and a fabulous new garden room and delightful garden. Update from Nurseryman Colin Ward Now Summer seems to finally be here (famous last words!) the garden here at Swines Meadow is cracking on at a pace. The Hostas are getting lots of ooo’s from visitors and the trees and shrubs that were planted to give them the dappled shade that they prefer are busy leafing up. At the other end of the garden the Holboelia climbers are kicking out beautiful perfume from their ivory to pinky flowers. This time of year can be very tiring on the nursery with all the watering and long days but at the end of the day I usually go for a wander round the garden to wind down and see the changes that occur daily. There are studies out there claiming plants and gardens are good both for physical and mental health, something I have suspected for a long time. Last month the gardening world lost Beth Chatto at the ripe age of 94 who apparently was mooching about in her garden a couple of days before her death. A good testament.

Childhood memories of David Lunn are sparked having read Carrs the Butchers in the last issue of I’d rather be in Deeping David recalls, ‘I live in Deeping now but when I was very young, and I mean 13 or 14, I lived in Shakespeare Avenue, New England, with my brother and sister. Those days you had a job doing paper rounds etc. Well, I had a job in a butcher’s shop, along with my brother who did the rounds on a trade bike. My mother did the cooking in the back of the shop and in the afternoon I came in and did the scrubbing down of the block. I used a wire brush and very hot water that we heated in an old copper. Later on my brother left the shop to go to work at BT so I took over his place. My first day for delivering the orders was terrible: having got the bike out and put all the orders in the front I went out on the road and promptly fell over, I just could not hold the weight of all the meat. Bob came out and helped me with the orders and together we washed all the meat and the next time I went out with half of the orders. He was very understanding and after a few weeks I got the knack of it. After I delivered my orders in the morning, I spent the afternoon cleaning the back of the shop till about 6 o’clock, and then I went next door to the sweet shop and bought some sweets to eat while watching Juke Box Jury. Happy memories. I will be 74 next week but still think I had a good time!’

Rabbits Rabbits are a highly intelligent, inquisitive and social animal therefore keeping them in a pair is ideal. The best combination to keep together is a neutered male and neutered female, this is supported and recommended by the RSPCA. If your rabbit must be kept alone then ideally they should be kept indoors as you will be the one providing them with the important muchneeded companionship. Bunnies make great house pets and are easy to litter train. Hutches should be large enough for your bunny to move around freely, stand and stretch without touching any of the sides or the roof. We stock a wide range of runs which can be used indoors and out and 3 sizes of indoor cages. Remember if they are out in a run they need access to a shaded area. Bunnies teeth constantly grown, to prevent dental problems fresh hay should always be available and provided 80% of their diet. A good quality hay is essential every day. Our hay & straw comes from a lovely family run farm in Devon. It is pesticide free and is dust extracted several times to lower the risk of mites. At just £3.99 for an XL bag it’s incredible value for money. We also stock lots of herb mixes which can be added to hay to encourage natural foraging behaviour and help prevent boredom.

Feeding a good quality pellet food is another essential for a healthy rabbit. We stock a variety of both muesli and pellet foods. Pellet foods are a better choice to feed as this can help to minimise selective feeding, which can be a problem with muesli mixes. Selective feeding can cause an imbalance in the essential vitamins that are needed for a healthy rabbit. Vegetables are also an important part of a rabbit’s diet, remember younger rabbits will need to be introduced gradually to different vegetables. With the warmer weather now arriving it can bring the arrival of the dreaded fly strike. It will be even more important to be checking your rabbits frequently, especially around their bottoms, as in hot weather flies can be attracted to any mess that is stuck or left behind. We stock sprays to help combat this. We have an incredible range of bunny products instore including hides, logs, gnaws, toys and lots of healthy treats. We also carry most of the Excel and the Science Selective ranges. As always, our staff are on hand to answer any questions you have, 7 days a week. You can even bring your bunnies in to say hi đ&#x;˜Šđ&#x;˜Š Next time cat & dog Nutrition, Do you know what’s in your food?

Feeling Young, Wild & Free… Huge development benefits await children who make nature their playground. There’s something very special about giving a child a playground where the sky is the limit, and their imagination can soar. Thankfully, the Deepings are within a short drive of some incredible landscapes, stately homes, gardens, meadows, forests, lakes and rivers. In every location, you will find so much to absorb and learn about for children of all ages – risk-taking, communication, observation skills, animal and plant life, not to mention the sensory, almost primal, connection that we have with the earth and the elements. Let’s face it – playing outside is good for the soul – not just for children, but for the whole family. Zoë Kornfled suggests five ways you can make memories in the fresh air locally...

Fineshade Woods A must for any Julia Donaldson fans (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), this ancient woodland, near Corby, boasts not only a Gruffalo Orienteering Course, but a Highway Rat Activity Trail. There are routes to suit adventurers of all ages, to be enjoyed by foot, cycle or even by horse. Every month, ‘Baby Bushcraft’ sessions are led by keen Forest School experts. My husband and two-year-old son recently enjoyed a wonderful few hours exploring the environment, and learning some essential forestry skills, including: building a shelter, lighting a campfire, spotting wildlife… and hunting for Stick Man!

Hills and Holes This area of outstanding beauty, near the beautiful village of Barnack, does exactly what it says on the tin! Once there, you are free to indulge in one of the greatest of childhood pastimes: chasing up hills and hurtling yourself down holes! As a designated ‘Special Area for Conservation’, due to its orchid-rich grassland, and formed around the rubble of a medieval quarry, our family love being amongst the wild flowers there. After chasing butterflies, you could enjoy a picnic at the summit of one of the hills, before exploring the aptly named ‘Limestone Walk’, which has special links to Peterborough Cathedral. 46

The Spinney Nestled just outside Little Bytham, the Spinney combines both open and sheltered woodland space, providing hours of fun for its visitors, together with an adjoining arable meadow to explore. Volunteers have been working hard to introduce both an orchard and sensory garden. A short walk from the car park, adventurers of all ages can be discovered, zooming down the zip-line and playing on the swings. You will also find a popular slide, see-saw and play houses in between the native trees, with hills to run up and down. Time and attention have been given to make the playground feel part of the existing environment – it feels part of the woodland, the way it should be.

Nene Park For years, this beautiful wide-open space, in the heart of Peterborough, has been a tried and tested stomping ground for dog-walkers, runners, water sports enthusiasts and trainspotters alike. With a recent refurb of one of the main playground areas, the newish Badger Park has added new obstacles to navigate, and a fantastic den-building area. The award-winning sandy haven of the Otter play area near the café is a firm favourite of ours, and we also often treat ourselves to a mini boat trip around the lake, just to go duck spotting. There’s always something going on here – a fantastic combination of hustle and calm, with plenty of open space to breathe and ‘reboot’. Plus, there’s even a regular ‘Nature Tots’ group that runs monthly – check out the Facebook page for more details.

Deeping Lakes I have to admit to only venturing to this most local area of natural beauty for the first time just this week. On arrival, I felt instantly relaxed by the water’s edge. It was a bright fluffy-cloud kind of day, with a breeze to show off the long grasses and teasels at their best. We completed the circular walk and met others with binoculars and cameras, taking advantage of the wide range of wildlife to spot. There are bird hides dotted all along the route, with a beautiful dappled woodland walk way leading to a raised pathway along the river where we came across swans, geese, oriental ducks, sheep and horses. The walk was perfect for younger legs, and there was so much to spot that we are already planning another visit.
