Welcome Fifty local-icious issues! And still more stories to tell, pictures to take and events to celebrate! Of course none of them would be possible without Gary, David, Joy and Ian, Zoe, Sue and all our friends and neighbours who have supported us over the last few years and to them our grateful thanks for their words, their photographs, their advertising and support. Special thanks are also due to our faithful band of loyal deliverers without whom the news simply would not get through! But most of all, this magazine would not be possible without the vibrant, colourful and committed community of which we are all lucky enough to be a part! Perfectly illustrated by the winners of the fifth Deeping Dog Show – A bark on Jubilee Park! Judy Stevens 3

50 years of the Lincs Wildlife Trust by Dave Vandome

16

FEATURE

April 9 1969 was the day that the first British-assembled Concorde took to the air for the first time. Hundreds of newsmen from around the world were gathered at Filton and RAF Fairford to report on the event. Alas, Concorde is no longer gracing our skies, but locally (and more quietly) a new Group was formed. The Bourne Area Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, which also covers Stamford and Market Deeping, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Group held its inaugural meeting on 9 April 1969, and now organises a lively local agenda for Trust members living in the area, currently numbering over 600 households. Non-members are also welcome to attend most events. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust was formed in 1948, originally known as the Lincolnshire Naturalists’ Trust and it was the third County Trust to be formed, preceded by Norfolk (1926) and Yorkshire (1946). By 1969 it had acquired 30 reserves covering some 2,500 acres and had just over 2,000 members. To support the Trust’s work at a more local level 17 area groups were formed. Their purpose was to organise local meetings and events, promote and raise funds for the Trust and encourage volunteering on local reserves and special projects.

Clearing the visitors’ route, Deeping Lakes, September 2003

Image: D Vandome

The Bourne Area Group will hold a number of special events to celebrate its golden anniversary. In addition to its open day at Deeping Lakes in June the Group plans to hold two special family events in July and October, the second of these having a Halloween theme. It also will introduce visitors to some of the lesser -known smaller reserves through afternoon or evening guided walks. The anniversary year was officially launched at the Group’s March meeting. The Methodist’s Church Hall in Bourne was packed out for the event, with past and present Committee members and Chairmen in attendance, along with Paul Learoyd, the Trust’s Chief Executive. A slide presentation by Dave Vandome formed the framework of the meeting, with lots of memories being recalled by members of the audience. Hazel Williams had baked a cake for the occasion, which was ceremonially cut by Paul Learoyd. After the refreshments’ break Paul, assisted by Trustee and Trust’s Deputy Chairman David Sheppard, presented a ‘President’s Award’ to Trish Stubley and Roger Favell. The award, represented by a silver lapwings pin badge, recognises their outstanding contribution to the Trust over many years. Paul Learoyd closed the meeting with a slide presentation updating the work of the Trust, and looking forward to the future of the Trust and nature conservation in the county.

FEATURE It is impossible here adequately to record the work of the Bourne Area Group, but luckily new technology can. The first newsletter produced in 1969 was typed on to a stencil, which was then duplicated for a very limited circulation. Later came photocopiers and now the internet, e-books and downloads. Dave Vandome has produced an e-book entitled ‘Fifty years of the Bourne Area Group’, available at: https//issuu. com/davevandome/docs/50years – or as a download available on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust’s website. If you have any queries about the Bourne Area Group or would like to volunteer in some way or have any comments that you’d like to share then please contact them by e-mail at LWTBAG2018@ gmail.com. Details of the Groups programme and volunteering is on the Group’s website (http://www.freewebs.com/bournetrust/) with updates on their Facebook page (search for ‘Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust – Bourne Area Group’). Details of all the Trust’s reserves and how to become a Trust member are available at www.lincstrust.org.uk/

PROFILE FEATURE

Michael Goode

in conversation with Kevin Hughes Michael Goode has a confession. He has lived and breathed football for most of his life, but never actually been to a watch a Premier League fixture. “Amazing, really,” he says, chuckling slightly. “The truth is, my own football career has kept me so busy, I’ve never had the time. That’s definitely one on my wish list.” There can’t have been many spare Saturdays in the past 30-odd years. For Goode, football has been his second career virtually for as long as he can remember - and Deeping Rangers has been at the heart of that. Goode’s association with his hometown club is a lengthy one; a pathway through junior and youth football – starting at U12s – and breaking into the first team at 16 years old. He was part of the Rangers side that won the United Counties League title in 2006-07

and, since 2015, has been first team manager at the club, based at Outgang Road, Market Deeping. We’re talking on the eve of what will be his fifth consecutive season at Rangers and, impressively, his 10th season of management overall in the UCL. With his playing career drawing to a close, Goode took up the position of joint-manager at Stamfordbased Blackstones before moving on to Peterborough Northern Star, again sharing the managerial duties. His time at PNS came to an abrupt end. “We were sacked, when we were sitting in 7th place in the league,” he recalls. What followed was an enjoyable break from the game – for a time. “I spent the next few months just being at home,” Goode says. “Being with the family, going to the coast, taking time out. It was lovely.” In 2015, a route back into club management opened up; for a local lad the opportunity to manage Deeping Rangers was too tempting to turn down. “I knew the Deeping job might be coming up,” Goode recalls. “I spoke to a few people at the club. I spoke to Jack Marsden (assistant manager), to see if he’d be interested. We went to a couple of games, to see what the team was like. We were both up for the challenge. “The club is close to home, which helped. But also, my life was geared towards this routine - training, playing and so on - and had been since I was 16 years old. Football has been a part of my life for so long. It’s ingrained in you. You just step back into it.”

In four seasons under Goode, the club has finished second in the UCL twice, played in a number of highprofile FA Cup ties, and won the Lincs Senior Trophy in April 2019. Yet, the decision to commit to another season was not an easy one.

“It was a really tough decision, approaching this new season,” admits the former Deepings School student. “We’ve managed to improve every season; we were second in the UCL in 201819, won a cup, had a great run in the FA Cup, were three wins away from Wembley in the FA Vase. You do think, ‘is it time to call it a day? Can we go any further?’ I’ve got two girls now, so there’s my family to think about too.” “But we’re going to give it another go at promotion. As a management team we’re as driven as we can be. We try to make everything as professional as we can, in the way we prepare, train and plan.” Goode’s coaching team have also committed for a further season, with Marsden, Danny Bircham and Martin Bond all on board. Leigh Porter joins the team, too, as joint assistant manager. The support is crucial for Goode. The role might be voluntary but it absorbs huge amounts of time and with family life and work commitments – the 43-year-old is Head of PE at Hampton College – to consider, balancing it all is no mean feat. “I have to juggle work around the football,” he says. “There will be times when I can’t be at a game - a parent’s evening when we have a midweek fixture, for example. That’s why I have a great coaching team around me. Moving forward, I’ll need them more. I need to get better at managing my time.” That time is taken up not just with match days but travelling, training, meetings and phone calls - mainly to his players. “I make all my football calls when I’m out

walking my two dogs,” says Goode, who lives in Deeping St James with wife Pamela and their two daughters. He laughs. “Ask the lads – they often hear the wind whistling in the background and say, ‘you’re out with the dogs, aren’t you?’” We speak for a while about how next season’s squad, strengthened by a handful of new signings, is shaping up and Goode’s enthusiasm and ambition burns brightly. On the field, a top two finish in the UCL Premier Division would give Rangers a chance of promotion; off the field, increased revenue from sponsorship, commercial opportunities and attendance would help enormously.

“We’ve had big crowds at the Haydon Whitham Stadium for friendlies against Peterborough and Doncaster, and FA Cup games against Kidderminster and Rushden & Diamonds,” says Goode. “If we can start to average of 130, 140 for UCL games we’re getting somewhere. When people do come to see us, they often come back. It’s only a few quid to get in, the football and the atmosphere is good.” “We’re always interested in talking to potential new sponsors and advertisers. The stadium is up to scratch, and the club is working to develop a sustainable model. Deeping Rangers are ready for that the next level.”

DEEPINGS LITERARY FESTIVAL

Book Shop Band

The Deepings Literary Festival really was a chance to showcase the Deepings and its local businesses to guests who travelled the length and breadth of the country to attend. After a launch which featured local poet Si Fox and Peterborough Poet Laureate Clare Currie the festival started with Judith Allnatt, author of The Poet’s Wife and well known to lovers of all things John Clare. Judith enjoyed her morning so much she stayed in the Library for the afternoon talk from new author Guinevere Glasfurd Brown. Meanwhile, at Lilli’s, the audience was treated to a delicious afternoon tea while listening to Sunday Times Top Ten best-selling author, Cathy Bramley. The evening catered for an entirely different audience when endurance athlete Mimi Anderson spoke to an appreciative audience at the Spin Room, with catering from new Bourne charity, Don’t Lose Hope. At the Deepings School Dr Patricia Fara of Cambridge University spoke about her book A Lab of One’s Own - Science & Suffrage in the First World War to a packed house. Day two kicked off with pastries and coffee in the lounge at The Stage where thriller writer Darren O’Sullivan interviewed million-copy-selling thriller writer, Louise Jensen. The festival then adjourned to the magnificent setting of the Granary, West Deeping. Graham Magee takes up the story

‘It wouldn’t be every day that you would find me being coerced into a round of communal singing of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, however, Susie Boyt had charmed us all with her thoughts on family and friendships and an almost philosophical question and answer session with Martin Fisher had the audience gripped. It is of course her love of all things Judy Garland, the subject of Susie’s books, that had led us all somewhere over a rainbow on that super sunny Friday. This was all perfectly rounded off with a mini afternoon tea. On Saturday afternoon Carol Drinkwater arrived for her stay at the Granary and to attend the gala dinner that evening. After a tour of the house, finding out all about the Granary and having a go at running the water wheel at Molecey Mill she settled in, ready for the night. Carol was new to the Deepings, so we keenly promoted the area to her ensuring she knew what a landmark location she was staying in. It was apposite that on the day after the second woman Prime Minister resigned, the Deepings should host political broadcaster John Sergeant who had been present at the noteworthy resignation of the first woman Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. At breakfast on Sunday we learnt the background to Carol’s life in Provence. She and her husband Michel have restored an old olive farm and saved the magnificent ancient trees, learning how to produce oil. Her home in Provence is just as historical as ours and has one of the earliest outdoor swimming pools on the Côte d’Azur. continued >

Carol’s books cover many aspects of Provençal life and the work she has done If the Festival needed gravitas that was provided in bucket loads by great-greatto the Olive Farm. She held everyone grandson of Charles Dickens, Gerald, who was accompanied by the Book Shop captivated. After Carol’s departure the Band en route to a gig at a slightly larger festival at Hay on Wye. Lincolnshire stage was reset for our local village artist author Barbara Copperthwaite spoke at the Coronation Hall followed by bestNick Tearle and poetry by Becky Owenselling crime writer, Elly Griffiths. Refreshments ably provided by Pete and Di Fisher. Nick’s work is inspired by the Wheatley raised over £300 for Macmillan. At the Priory Church crime fiction stunning local landscape which surrounds writer Sophie Hannah spoke about her life as a writer and Fresh Ayre welcomed the Deepings. Nick’s paintings provided her to the church with their own brand of mediaeval music. Independent authors an amazing backdrop to all of our Granary Julie Stock and Lizzie Lamb rounded off the Festival over coffee and apple pie. But events. Deepings Lions Club ensured that more is to come! Simon Scarrow has postponed his talk to July 14th at the Iron the afternoon was perfected with bubbles Horse; a writers’ workshop is planned for September with crime writer Alison and strawberries.’ Bruce, and a Pint of Poetry will be held with local poets at the Waterton Arms this autumn. Planning for the 2021 Festival has already begun! Barnsley lass Milly Johnson appeared first at the Boundary’s River Restaurant where she regaled the audience with tales from her books and her life, while the audience tucked into a hearty helping of fish and chips. She performed again at the Coronation Hall on Saturday morning. Her side-splitting humour will long be remembered by Deeping folk. Lucien Young hot-footed to Deeping from London to amuse at Godsey Coffee, where he spoke about his titles, including Alice in Brexitland and The Secret Diary of Jeremy Corbyn. Down the road at the Open Door Church the Festival was filmed (left) by reporters from the One Show who were keen to catch up with members of Market Deeping Si Fox reads a poem he wrote for the event Model Railway Club who had 32

1950’s vintage memorabilia

50’S MEMORABILIA

by Jessica Wall of Stamford Auction Rooms When I think of the 1950s, I think of it as the era of a colourful change in the world following the darkness of wartime. This colour is reflected in the distinctive 1950s memorabilia, from bright vintage dresses, kitsch collectables and vibrant kitchenalia that we see often coming through the saleroom doors. British ceramics of the 1950s are highly evocative of the decade of optimism and change in British life following times of austerity, which was replaced by a new generation of young consumers who demanded ceramics which were bright and modern. The well-known design by Homemaker epitomises the period, together with the vibrant Poole, Susie Cooper, and Midwinter iconic 1950s pattern,s to name just a few. Stamford Auction Rooms has sold many of these examples which have gone through a resurgence of popularity in the last few years, but are still affordable.

In addition to the colour injection into ceramics patterns, it can be seen in examples of 1950s glass, such as Murano figurines which we sold in January for £160, and bold use of single colour, for example, in our 27th April auction, where we saw two large 1950s coloured glass bottles with stoppers sell for £75. Mid-Century Danish furniture design has also become increasingly sought after, and the Stamford Auction Rooms holds specialist ‘Mid-Century’ auctions, which include many designer pieces from the 1950s. Furniture designers such as Harry Bertoia and Ray Eames achieve high prices at auction.

When the tough gets going well the tough get painting! Well that was the case for Rachael who following an horrific accident in a gym which caused her to have a stroke she took up her paintbrushes as part of her recovery and literally painted herself better. As a result she works in a variety of styles, She lives and works for Centrepoint in London but with family in this area she is exhibiting here for PAOS.

Lexy’s love affair with Encaustic Wax started about 18 months ago when she saw it being demonstrated at a craft fair. Since then she has taught others how to paint with wax and exhibited her own work at various local events. Lexy is particularly enthralled with the fantasy effect that it gives, which can’t easily be achieved in any other way - a technique that dates back to Ancient Egyptian times. Lexy is a primary school teacher in Peterborough and attributes her enduring love of art to her grandfather who first inspired her as a child.

Ellie grew up in the Deepings, and now lives by the river in Deeping St. James. Having spent much of her time at school doodling covertly on the last pages of her exercise books, she went off to do a degree in Graphic Design at Bath Spa University, where she specialised in illustration, followed by a Master’s degree in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. After graduating in 2007, Ellie wrote and illustrated picture books alongside teaching art classes in a primary school. Now freelance, she works from her studio, creating books and running a small children’s art school called Art Stars. Ellie’s latest book, published in January 2019, is called Everybunny Dream (a sequel to Everybunny Dance and Everybunny Count). She is currently working on picture book number eight, which features lots and lots of dogs! Ellie will be selling signed books, limited edition giclee prints and original artwork (including her dog character sketches!). Visit www.paos.org.uk to find over

Two sisters united in their love of art - brought up in the Hertfordshire countryside, their father a master printer and inveterate sketcher of places and things. The pair left home, married and had children, travelled the four corners of the earth and returned to take up their paintbrushes, put up their easels and create artwork, each with their own individual style. Susan, with a looser style Barbara Susan than her sister, has had a more commercial career, painting dogs for sale at Crufts and beyond. Barbara paints in far more detail than Susan but since they joined forces to care for their mother they have lived in a lodge on the lakes at Tallington, easels up, paintbrushes at the ready - an indominatable team!

SAMS

Sams rebooted Si Fox takes a look When Sam and Bhanu bought the off-licence in Rycroft Avenue in 1980, they weren’t just starting a busness, they were building a legacy for the people of Deeping. From that humble beginning nearly four decades ago, ‘Sam’s’ has grown and evolved with its clientele into its current guise, ably watched over now by a new generation of the Parbat family; Sam and Bhanu’s son and daughter-in-law, Vikin and Shama. Extensively recently refurbished throughout, the place now has a modern feel to it, with a place for everything, and everything in its place. A bank of chillers and freezers around the edge keep things cold, from a wide selection of beers and wines, through to the sausage rolls, burgers, bacon and sausages from the local, award-winning Grasmere Butchers. ‘Keeping it local’ is something Shama is very passionate about. Apart from Grasmere, they also sell Sneaky Peacock ale (a Deeping Brewery) and a selection of hand-made fudge, from Deeping Fudge. If you prefer your confectionary to be a little more ‘gingery’, Hawkins Gingerbread is also on sale, using an original Lincolnshire recipe from 1740! Conscious that there are many businesses in and around Deeping who would benefit from shelf space in a busy community shop, Shama is fully behind the new #LoveDeeping initiative, which tries to keep local people’s money local. The big thing, though, is giving the attached Post Office its own space within the shop. As Deeping loses its last bank in the Market 50

Not only can you buy the odd thing you’ve run out of, you can get amazing food deals from the Premier side of the store, which are advertised in a monthly leaflet, a wide selection of greeting cards for that last-minute birthday, a great selection of wines, spirits and beer, selected fresh fruit and vegetables, or you can just go in and get a coffee whilst you’re waiting for your pie or burger to heat up in the microwave. Whatever the reason for going in, we deserve to support them as much as they try to support us.
