l-r Peter Davies, Club Chairman, Sir Rod Stewart, Bill Sowerby

Welcome This may well be a once in a lifetime opportunity for this magazine to feature a picture of Rod Stewart so there are no apologies for doing just that! If 2019 showed us anything, it was how a group of people, in this case Market Deeping Model Railway Club, can turn their fortunes around and emerge from the depths of despair to be even stronger than they were before. In this they were aided by the generosity of folk across the world and notably by a £10,000 donation from Sir Rod. After their layouts were trashed on the night before their annual exhibition at Stamford in May, the intrepid modellers worked out a way to honour a commitment and show at the Deepings Literary Festival at the end of that month. They have subsequently shown their resurrected layouts at local events as well as at the Warley National Railway Exhibition and at the Peterborough Festival of Railway Modelling where they raised funds for Little Miracles. They are now developing plans for their annual show 16-17 May 2020, now extended to two days and occupying every large space of the Stamford Academy building, giving more room for layouts and also of course, traders. Sponsored by T.C. Harrison (Ford Main Agent) and with site security provided by Land Sheriffs Ltd, advance tickets are available on https://www.mdmrc.org/ Judy Stevens 3

FEATURE

An exciting project has been going on in the Deepings in the recent months - you may have seen it in the County News or advertised on social media and in our very own Deepings Advertiser! The Extensive Urban Survey, which is being run by Lincolnshire County Council and funded by Historic England. This is the latest in a series of national surveys which have been looking into the history, development and character of our towns and villages on a county by county basis. Market Deeping and Deeping St James have been the most recent to be included in the survey; the history books have been checked, the Lincolnshire Historical Environment Record has been consulted, officers from the council have been out and about in the village and the results are in! Market Deeping and Deeping St James have an extensive history. The area was intensely occupied in the prehistoric period; settlement and occupation evidence from the Mesolithic through to the Iron Age is well recorded in the area immediately to the north, east and south, including the remains of round houses, evidence for salt making and agricultural activity. Archaeological remains from the Roman period found in the same location as earlier prehistoric remains demonstrate that many of these settlements continued to be occupied from the prehistoric into the Roman period. These settlement sites did not, however, continue into the early medieval (Saxon) period (c410-1066); the lack of archaeological remains from the early medieval suggests that the focus of settlement moved elsewhere, possibly further into the area of present day Market Deeping and to the west and north of the town. It is possible that early medieval settlement remains are beneath later development, leading to a gap in our archaeological knowledge of the Deepings in this period. Remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross are recorded around St Guthlac’s Church and documents from the 9th century demonstrate that there was a settlement in the town from this time. The name ‘Deepings’ is widely thought to mean ‘deepfen’, or ‘the deep place’ in Old English (which is approximately AngloSaxon). The Deepings really boomed in the medieval period (c1066-1539). Deeping Priory, in Deepings St James, was founded in 1139 and St Guthlac’s Church was built in 1299, although it is very likely that an earlier church was extant prior to the current church’s construction (possibly an early medieval structure). The first market within the town dates to 1220 and a fair was granted shortly after. The street plan of both of the historic centres suggest they were carefully planned in the medieval period, with long thin plots (burgages) extending to a connecting ‘back lane’, which is still visible in the layout of the town today, and a wide market place in the centre.

continued >

15

FEATURE The buildings still standing in the town (apart from the churches) are largely post-medieval (c15401900), following a prosperous period of expansion from the 17th-19th centuries. The centres of the two towns are built of local limestone, demonstrating that the towns were successful throughout this period, likely partly due to trading on the River Welland and the location of the towns on it. A small amount of new expansion into new land occurred at this time, but most of the development was confined to the medieval settlement. The 20th century has seen the largest amount of development within the towns since the medieval period. New residential developments in both Market Deeping and Deeping St James have taken place and have produced one large town in place of two smaller settlements. The new developments are mostly residential in nature; however, schools and shops have also been built as part of the expansion. The market place in Market Deeping has seen change in the 20th/21st centuries to accommodate the traffic requirements within the town, but the historic

imprint remains largely intact. The suburban expansion which has taken place to the north and east of the settlements has generally been of 20th century fashion in various styles, characters and housing types and generally does not conform to the historic character. However, both Market Deeping and Deeping St James maintain their pleasant, small town characters and are an asset to South Lincolnshire; the local environment is evocative of a long and interesting history. The full report, including maps and descriptions of the character of the town, videos showing the growth of the towns and extra information is all available online at www.Lincsabout.town or if you would like to get in touch you can contact us through social media on twitter at @UrbanSurvey, Nicola Grayson Facebook Lincolnshire EUS or via email at lincseus@lincolnshire.gov.uk. 16

PROFILE FEATURE

If you do one thing this year... Suzie Legge had just won the premium bonds when I visited her at the beginning of December and she looked quietly pleased with herself. But for Suzie this is just another prize in a line up of goodies that she has amassed over the years in a lifetime of competition winning! It started when she was just eleven years old at school in Essex and won a boxful of artist’s materials including brushes, oil paints and watercolours – she triumphantly took them to school to show her art teacher! After school she moved to the Canaries where her time was taken up running her own restaurant and her competition days seemed to be behind her. But on moving back to the UK and becoming assistant manager of a hotel in Broadstairs while she waited for a nursing course to start, a Radio Times competition for a holiday for four in Hollywood caught her eye. The holiday was to take place during the making of the Batman movie in 1991 and included a trip to the film studios. And guess what? She won! By the turn of the century Suzie had taken up her nursing career and was living in Worthing where a new radio station, Splash FM, had been launched by Diddy David Hamilton. The station featured generous on-air competitions on a daily basis and Suzie embraced the challenge with aplomb, netting M&S vouchers, stationery, flowers every month for a year, tickets for the ballet in Brighton, hampers, champagne, lunch for two at a restaurant, chocolates, a treatment at a beauty salon and a signed cookbook by Aldo Zilli. This winning spree culminated in the opportunity for local restaurateur, Daniel Clarke, to prepare and serve 18

a meal for eight at the lucky winner’s home. All that needed to be done was for the competitors to amass five red items over a week in the lead up to Christmas in celebration of the chef ’s restaurant, Red. Easy enough for this accomplished winner over the four days but then on the fifth day, Suzie took her winning ways to a new height. She collected as many red items as she could muster and headed off to the restaurant from where the live competition was being broadcast. She calmly ordered a glass of wine and waited for the broadcaster to announce that the first person to arrive at the restaurant with a red bauble would be the winner. Calmly she rummaged through her bag and produced the red bauble to claim her prize. Chef Daniel visited Suzie at her home to plan the menu, arrived on the appointed day to prepare and cook the food with his sous chef and with a waiter to serve – Suzie was beginning to get a taste for the high life! So when broadcaster, sommelier and alumni of Stamford School, John Radford, held a competition each week for a month to win a trip for two entitled Cook Espana - Drink Espana in Barcelona – Suzie determined that she would be the winner! Fluent in Spanish following a decade on the peninsula she knew that Cocido Madrileno was a stew from Madrid – that was week one in the bag. Second week and she identified the three wines that make up champagne: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier – naturally! She sailed through to the final in the fourth week and claimed her prize! Taking her friend and fellow nurse, Julia, as her companion the couple were surprised when John himself joined them on the trip and taped them with the accompaniment of his mellifluous tones on their adventures which included a meal in a tapas bar and a trip to the underground

caves of Codomiu in Sant Sadumi d’Anoia where Cava is produced. Eventually the station entreated this multiple winner to have a six-month break to give other members of the public a chance to win! Suzie was mortified to discover that when the prize sheets were completed, it was her name and address that was on autofill! Her attentions diverted to a local department store where a luxury Advent calendar was up for grabs. Suzie was preparing for work early one morning when a local radio’s researcher rang her back and found her in the bath. Sploshing about in the bubbles proved compelling listening and Suzie was soon broadcast live and asked the question, which was Cliff Richard’s famous Christmas hit? Mistletoe came easily but Suzie had a mental block and the full title escaped her and so did her winning ways! When she arrived at work that morning the anaesthetist was playing the hit ‘Mistletoe & Wine’ at top volume! Now living locally, I shouldn’t have been surprised when Suzie won the I’d rather be in Deeping competition for a bottle of red wine ‘Ned’ in the August issue! And now? She is busy getting to grips with the Sunday Times competition ’Where Was I?’ It can only be a matter of time! If you do one thing this year, treat yourself and enter a competition – you never know, the thrill of the win could be all yours! Far fewer people than you imagine enter. And every month we will be running a competition! We haven’t asked Suzie to give others a chance just yet!

Interrailing

INTERRAIL

with Harriet Spriggs It all started in May 2018 … a group of young people from the scouting community of Lincolnshire attended a selection camp, which consisted of a number of challenges which were used to decide who was chosen for the trip. Within the next few weeks we found out if we made it or not after anxiously waiting. Over the next year we attended multiple training camps, which were held over a weekend in order to plan and organise the interrailing trip, down to the tiniest detail, as well as getting to know the other individuals who were selected to experience travelling around Europe.

Harriet Spriggs

On 25 August 2019, 24 people involved in the scouting movement arrived at Grantham train station ready to embark upon the most amazing adventure. However, it was unknown to us that the train from Grantham to London was going to take 147 minutes more than planned due to the weather conditions. Nevertheless,

the morale couldn’t have been kept at a higher level – excitement overtook every other emotion. After 23 hours of travelling we made it to our first destination – Berlin, Germany. Throughout our time here we visited many places, including the Berlin Wall, the Holocaust memorial site, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg gate and Hitler’s bunker… let’s just say it was a lot of walking. Next city… Krakow, one of the oldest cities in Poland, known for its old town features and underground museums. One out of the two days at this stop was spent exploring the city and its historic features, the other was a very difficult day trip to Auschwitz. Needless to say, it was a shocking experience, but one that everyone, if they get the chance, should encounter. Prague was the next location on the agenda. Known for its extraordinary architecture, Prague is also known as the heart of Europe. We were lucky enough to attend a music concert in this location, as well as visit the Lennon wall and a wax museum. Next stop – my favourite place – Salzburg, Austria. A very popular tourist destination for its music history, river cruise and

cultural heritage. Across the two days we spent here, we explored the city on a river cruise, as well as visiting the birthplace of Wolfgang Mozart. In addition to this, we travelled to scarily high altitudes on cable cars, which disappeared above the clouds – I can safely say I’m not doing that ever again, storms and cable cars do not mix! After the packed days we had been through so far, we finally had a day to relax in Saverne, the most peaceful destination yet. We had the opportunity to spend time with the group, enjoy the sun and avoid the thought that the trip was coming to an end. It was obvious to us at that point that none of us wanted to leave. Finally, it was time to go to Paris, where we visited the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame, followed by shopping… a lot of shopping. Then came the final group meal. What a memorable experience, which I definitely won’t ever forget; I know that we’ve all made friends, who will be there forever. The only thing I can say is thank you to everyone who made this trip possible, from the leaders on the trip, to the generosity of the people who donated to help raise the expenses; it has truly been the best thing I have EVER done. 21

The Mists and Mysteries of England’s Fens Jamie knows you don’t need mountains to create spectacular landscapes.

PHOTOGRAPHY

By Jamie Overland

The Fens can be a desolate place. It’s a flat 15,000 square mile expanse of reclaimed wetlands in the east of England, from Lincoln in the north to Cambridge in the south, an area known as East Anglia. Some would say it’s not the most photogenic of landscapes. Having grown up in the Fens, I beg to differ. The Fens has character, especially in the early morning mist and fog, or under dark stormy skies. In fact, the Fens is famous for its uninterrupted big sky panoramas.

The Silver Birch Forest of Holme Fen One place I’ve enjoyed photographing is Holme Fen, near Peterborough. Holme Fen, part of the Great Fen, is the largest silver birch forest in lowland Britain, 2.75 meters below sea level. Silver birch trees are very photogenic and there are plenty of compositions to find in the fen woodland. The best time to visit is in the early morning mist or fog. I was lucky enough to experience a lovely foggy morning in Holme Fen, where the forest turns into an ethereal wilderness. The maintained paths and tracks, aid your compositions providing great leading lines into the disappearing mist.

The Fens Has Always Been a “Man vs. Water” Battle The Romans tried to control the water coming into the flat marshy Fens by building barriers. But once they left, nature quickly took over again. In the twelfth century, Benedictine monks started the massive project of building better defences and drainage systems and reclaiming the rich land for agriculture. This was accelerated in the seventeenth century, by businessmen led by the Earl of Bedford. Since then, much of the Fens has been drained by the creation of man-made rivers. Today, it’s some of England’s richest farmland. There isn’t much of the original marshland Fen remaining. However, some areas do still exist and are preserved and protected as National Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). 25

Look for the Wind Pump in Wicken Fen Nearby Wicken Fen is a haven for landscape photographers and birdwatchers. The iconic wind pump provides a great subject to shoot amongst the reed beds. Nearby, you’ll find a family of Konick Ponies and even Highland cattle. On a frosty winter morning, compositions are plentiful.

Woodwalton Fen, Like Entering a Lost World Another nearby remaining section of the ancient wild Fen, is Woodwalton Fen, also part of the Great Fen. A visit here is like entering a lost world. Charles Rothschild, known as the “Father of modern conservation” acquired this Fen and nearby Wicken Fen and established the first nature reserves in Britain. Rothschild sold Wicken Fen to the National Trust in 1899 but kept Woodwalton. Woodwalton is still kept today as a natural fen marsh and woodland. Again, early morning mist and fog is perfect to capture atmospheric images here with a mixture of marshes, drains, lakes and natural woodland providing plenty of great compositions. Woodwalton Fen is full of wetland wildlife, birds and insects. I spotted this lonely swan in the mist one morning. For me, it perfectly depicted the tranquility of the place. 26

Jamie Overland Jamie was born in Wisbech, the capital of the Fens, and spent his childhood helping his parents on their arable farm, which is where he got his love for the great outdoors. Today, he lives on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens, in Market Deeping. He’s been a keen photographer for the last 30 years, but it’s only been the last four years that he has discovered a real passion for landscape photography. He now focuses his photography in the flat east of England, primarily in the Fens, showing some of the photographic potential this part of the world has to offer. He regularly shares his journeys, experiences & photographs on YouTube, where he has his own channel YouTube.com/jamieoverland - so why not look him up and subscribe! Feeling Crafty with Zoë Kornfeld

CRAFTY KIDS

It is inevitable, as the winter months set in, that those of us with young ones will be spending more time indoors, and it’s always handy for parents to have a wealth of fun, simple, engaging activities to reach for, before the boredom fairies set to work. Having a well-stocked family craft box, and armed with plenty of ideas, the sky’s the limit. Crafting provides a long list of benefits for young hands and minds. However, projects should not be just be seen as a way to fill the time, but a fantastic opportunity to encourage and nurture creativity and selfexpression. Children are able to develop their fine motor skills – cutting and sticking, as well as holding pens and brushes all require muscle strength, dexterity and control, which can improve through practise. These are great building blocks for eventually learning to write. Little ones also have a chance to make decisions, perhaps choosing colours, or materials: they will relish the oppportunity to have control over how the finished article looks. Just as important, is the boost to a child’s self-esteem - the resilience needed to concentrate on a project, culminating in the joy and sense of achievement felt whilst proudly holding their finished piece aloft. To inspire us all to take on new crafty challenges at home with our children, I asked four local parents to tell me all about a recent project they enjoyed together:

Pom-pom craft with Hannah Watts There is nothing worse than a cold, wet, winter’s day, and nowhere to go with the kids. Mine usually get bored just sat around at home and playing with their tablets, so we love to get out the craft box, to have some fun getting messy, and see what we can make. One of my favourite things we have made is these large letters to brighten up the reading nook. All you need is a cardboard box to cut the letters out of, some colourful pom-poms, which can be picked up at most supermarkets, or craft shops and some glue. If you can’t get to a supermarket, you could use things you have lying around the house such as buttons, painted bottle tops or beads; just anything colourful! They’re really simple to make and look so effective. The kids loved making them, and are really proud to have them on display.

Junk Modelling with Emma Bakewell If you are anything like my family, we accumulate a lot of recycling. We tend to pile it up on the side then the “Recycling Fairy” takes it out to the grey bin. That is unless Toby gets his hands on it first! He is a massive Junk Modelling fan and his Nanny keeps a huge stash of recycling at her house for him too. Junk Modelling is easy and purse friendly. All you need to do is raid your recycling pile, find something sticky, and add in an imaginative child. All sorts of old containers work, but make sure they are clean and dry. For example: toilet roll or kitchen roll holders, butter/margarine tubs, ice cream tubs, or plastic drinks bottles. Equipment: PVA glue, Sellotape, glue dots, and scissors. Optional extras: paint (acrylic or poster paint works best on plastic), paper, googly eyes, or pipe cleaners. The possibilities really are endless! Some of Toby’s creations include a bug hotel, robot, space rocket and shaker. 33

CRAFTY KIDS

Eco-bird Feeder with Hannah Davies We boiled 1/4 cup of water and stirred in a sachet of gelatine, then took it off the heat and stirred in a cup of bird seed. It goes quite sticky, so after the first attempt I decided to lightly oil the biscuit cutters. We then just packed the seed into the shapes, and added a straw to make a hole for the string. The seed needs to be well-packed to hold together (baby spoons are brilliant for this!). They set hard, so we leave them overnight to be sure they’re done, then use a skewer to help get them out of the cutters. Thread the string and hang up! This year we’re giving them to teachers in a reusable veg bag (from Sainsbury’s) to make them super-eco-friendly. I thought these would be great as a fun and easy activity for the kids to get hands on and a bit sticky, but my daughter’s favourite bit is watching the birds. She loves sitting at the window, counting them, and spotting all the different colours.

Painting with Rebecca Jones My daughter shows a keen interest in my profession as an artist, so I thought what better way than to include her in what I do she enjoys the collaboration. We paint on canvas using various things such as brushes, pallet knifes, hands, spoons etc. Ophelia chooses the colours and then gets creating. Also, if feeling a little extra, I also paint one of my animals over the top of her work. So this piece Ophelia has created will feature either a tiger or monkey - her choice – which I will then paint it over the top. So, it’s a lovely joint effort, and we get some cool artwork for the house... and the best part is any object can be used to paint with! I have found that having the space to express herself through drawing, painting and just general hands-on creating helps with her toddler frustrations. It’s a space for her to let off energy, and be herself.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 25-27 January This year let’s put The Deepings on the Big Garden Birdwatch Map! Over its four decades this amazing bird-watching project has united the country as close to half a million people annually chart the winners and losers in the garden bird world. Nearly 9 million hours have been spent watching garden birds since the beginning in 1979 with more than 137 million birds counted! It was one of the first surveys to alert the RSPB to the decline in the number of song thrushes in gardens. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979 but 30 years later its numbers are less than half those recorded in 1979. By 2019, numbers of song thrushes seen in gardens have declined by 76%, coming in at number 20. Rebecca Munro, RSPB Director of Communications, said: ‘With nearly half a million people now regularly taking part, coupled with 40 years’ worth of

data, Big Garden Birdwatch allows us to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are doing. With results from so many gardens, we are able to create a “snapshot” of bird numbers across the UK. ‘The popularity of Big Garden Birdwatch shows just how passionate people across the UK are about their wildlife. Everyone has a role to play in saving nature and protecting our wildlife. This event is an enjoyable, easy, inclusive activity that anyone can do and a great opportunity to connect with nature.’ The house sparrow remained at the top of the Big Garden Birdwatch rankings as the most commonly seen garden bird with more than 1.2 million recorded sightings in 2019. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2020, watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour at some point over the three days. Only count the birds that land, not those flying over. Record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total you see in the hour.

Bring a slice of Spanish sun into your life and brighten up a January day - oranges from Seville are strong and add tang to the marmalade on your breakfast table! Set aside time to make your marmalade play some of your favourite tracks and move gently into 2020!

Image: Ken Bunch

RECIPE

First things first - collect your jam jars! INGREDIENTS 1.25kg/2lb 12oz Seville oranges 1.5kg/3lb 5oz granulated sugar Method 1. Scrub the oranges and place them whole in a large stainless steel or preserving pan. 2. Cover with 2.25 litres/4 pints water, then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for about an hour until the fruit is soft. 3. Preheat the oven to 140C/275F/Gas 1. Wash 8 300ml/10fl oz jars well in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly under running water. Leave jars and lids to dry, upside down, in the oven. Place a few saucers in the freezer to chill (these will be used to test if the cooked marmalade has reached setting point). 4. Remove the oranges from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside to cool. Carefully measure out 1.7 litres/3 pints of the cooking liquid, discarding any extra or topping up with water as necessary. Return the liquid to the pan. 5. When the oranges are cool enough to handle, cut in half and scoop out the flesh, pith and pips into a bowl. Pour the orange pulp into a muslin bag and secure with kitchen string. Add to the pan. 36

6. Chop the peel into shreds as fine as you like and add to the pan. Set the pan over a low heat and add the sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. 7. Bring the marmalade to a rolling boil for 10-15 minutes. Skim off any orange scum that rises to the surface. 8. Test for setting point by dropping a little of the mixture onto a chilled saucer, leave for a moment, then push your finger into the marmalade. If it wrinkles it is ready. Alternatively, dip a spoon into the marmalade, allow the mixture to cool a little, then slowly pour it back into the pan. If it is at the setting point, the drops will run together to form a hanging flake (this is known as the flake test). It can take up to 30 minutes to reach setting point, so keep testing. 9. When the marmalade is ready, remove the pan from the heat. Carefully ladle into the hot sterilised jars (a sterilised jam funnel makes this much easier) leaving approximately 1cm/½in space at the top of the jar. Twist the lids on the hot jars to seal. The marmalade will continue to thicken up as it cools.

Five great dolls houses

This dolls house was made by Nancy Titman’s grandfather, Harry Potter - no less! He was a solicitor’s cashier in Islington and had the most beautiful handwriting. He made this dolls house from cigar boxes as a birthday present for his daughter, Edith when she was five years old. It was a miniature of a three storey London town house and has the date 1885 above the central front door. It was furnished in Victorian fashion when Nancy played with it - it was painted red, modernised and equipped with electric light. As time went by the furniture also changed. Nancy’s grandchildren loved it, passed through many families and discovered, again, in time for her 100th birthday celebrations! Kian House was named after local artist, Anne Smart and her step daughter Kim who both share a love of dolls houses but neither had one! They bought a pre-loved one locally and set to work -staircases and separate banisters and doors were stained and fitted, a stair carpet was laid with stair rods made out of cocktail sticks polished with Rub’nBuff. Lighting and a fireplace were fitted and cooal for the bucket was made out of Fimo, baked in the oven. Anne painted a screen with flowers, stained and wax polished a wardrobe and working tea trolley and then made tray cloths out of fine lawn edged with cotton lace and starched!. Work has now been started on the inherited people - clothes knitted for a bisque baby doll using 2-ply and size 16 needles! Wine has been bought! 38

When Elaine Anderson bought her dolls house and created a tearoom with living accommodation upstairs she called it The Sticky Fingers Tea Room after the little tea shop in Uppingham where her own children had been welcomed to tea and cake and given a lollipop each as they left. Elaine an accomplished artist and illustrator has added delightful touches to personalise her house, lead flashing around the windows actually made of aged cardboard, weathered chimney pots on which five doves perch, one for each member of the family. The climbing rose around the door was yellow when bought but she has also painted it red to reflect her favourite variety, Masquerade. Would you like a cup of tea?

G R AY T O N E S I was living in a tower block on the Old Kent Road when this dolls house came into my life! I saw it at a little dolls house shop called The Singing Tree in the New Kings Rd and looked at it for several months before it became mine one Christmas in the early 80’s. I have spent a lot of time decorating it in bursts usually when things were going wrong elsewhere in my life. I look at it from time to time and put the lights on! I love it - one of my most treasured possessions!
