Intro

We’re late- we know. There are a million reasons which when typed thru the keyboard just read like excuses. Partly it was writer’s block, partly it was this average surf summer, partly it was my commitments to other work, but mainly it was procrastination about all of those things and then some. But here we are 30 issues deep. 30 doesn’t represent properly how old 09 Magazine is- a concept sprouted over decade ago- so there should be more like 60 issues of 09- clearly procrastination is the 09 Mag’s style. To be fair to myself, over that time it hasn’t been all mine, former ediots Leigh Hawker, Rowan Klevstul and Paul Greenland are all pretty adept at the skill- it’s how we writy types roll. This issue was supposed to be about all the cool side stories

that happened around the Hyundai Nationals at Piha this past January, and there are pix [this spread included] sprinkled throughout 09’s folds this issue- but the reality is the Nats are old news- they were fucken sick and there were heaps of those side bar fables- but you’ve seen my pix from that week all over the interweb and the newpapers months ago- you know Billy Stairmand won; I’m not meaning this negatively- but it’s just old news. So this issue had a complete rewrite, January’s content mainly binned- but hey 30 issues in 09 Magazine is still going!!! Holey shit balls- bet no one pegged that- I reckon the next 30 are going to be coming at ya a bit more faster- not a lot; you gotta ease into a commitment like that- but definitely a bit –CPL

bethells beach te henga waitakere

Located just to the west of Auckland, Te Henga – which refers to its sand dunes being shaped like over-turned waka (canoes) – was an important settlement of the Te Kawerau a Maki people. Europeans arrived there in the 19th century and began a series of major changes to the character and shape of Te Henga. The most significant was the clearing of land for timber and farming that began in 1854 and continued until the 1920s. A dam on the Waitakere River was completed in 1910, radically altering the level of the riverbed and reducing the flow of water to the sea (local surfers often speculate how good the surf could have been with the Waitakere river in full flow, thus creating much-needed sand banks). Original settler John Bethell sold the land that is now known as Te Henga Park to the Waitakere County Council and the beach and park area have been popular with Auckland residents ever since. Te Henga has also featured as a favourite location of TV shows like Zena and Hercules.

Billabong 2

The second annual Billabong City Squared took over 09’s Aotea Square for a Saturday late February. Skaters from all over New Zealand pushed the limits on the rail, ledge and quarter-pipe set up. A last minute edition of a vert extension on the quarter-pipe added a whole new element to the rail and stair orientated setup. In a heated final that saw eight of NZ’s finest skateboarders go head to head, James Kingston came out triumphant. Hot on his heels were fellow Cantabarian Jack Woodrow in fourth, South Auckland’s Cameron King in second and Ohakune resident Dallas Marshall in third. With an impending storm rolling in James Kingston landed trick after trick, most first try. A backside Smith-grind down the rail in the closing moments securing him the win and $3000 in prize money. Cam King stomped stylish switch and normal frontside flips, while Dallas Marshall kickflip noseslide the down ledge and general assaulted the stairs. Jack Woodrow took a refreshing approach with switch Smith grinds and switch backside 50-50s on the down ledges. Best trick went to Mitchell McCarthy with a kickflip backside lipslide down the rail. It was an epic event with a massive turn out from Auckland’s skate who’s who and an impressive crowd of public who enjoyed the gnarly skateboard battle in downtown Auckland. The afterparty at the Monte Christo Room was nothing short of mental. It’s sick to see skating back in Aotea Square- good on you Bong for backing the skate community.

Jolly Good Luck “Luck.” That’s what Piha surfer Anna Jolly says is the secret to her success at this year’s 2012 Hyundai National Surfing Championships. “Luck! And also when you’re a Mum you can’t be too fussy about surf conditions so I’m used to surfing crappy stuff just like in the comps.” Whatever the strategy, the powerful natural-footer managed to surf through the crappy conditions at Piha to win the women’s longboard division for the second time – repeating her success in Taranaki back in 2007. Not content with just one title, Anna also cut some length off her longboard (or perhaps she owns more than one surfboard?) and dominated the small but competitive group of over 30s women, taking the women’s senior title. In all Miss Jolly now has four national titles – two in 2012, the longboard in 2007 and one in 1991, when she won the first women’s junior title – putting her among the legends of New Zealand surfing. As well as surfing crappy waves, family is a big part of Anna’s surfing story. She admits having four-year-old daughter Cassidy means she gets less time to surf but the stoke factor is certainly there: “I definitely get a lot less water time these days and as I said before, I can’t be fussy about conditions anymore. But I get so stoked taking her surfing and on surf trips, especially with Poppa Mike!” Poppa Mike would be Anna’s father Mike Jolly, the man behind Piha Surf who ensured she grew up on healthy doses of surf satisfaction and Jolly joy. Anna still enjoys living at Piha – which is perceived by many in the 09 as living the surfer’s dream. “Sometimes it is like living the surfer’s dream, especially as a teacher you can pull off a dawnie and an evening session. But as we all know, Piha can make you wait a while in between sets in the winter....” Perhaps this is the reason why Anna ensures there are no barriers to her type of surfing equipment, excelling on shortboards, longboards and even admitting to wanting a stand-up paddleboard. She finds inspiration from the likes of Daniel Kereopa (DK), Michael Fitzharris, Thomas Kibblewhite and Piha teen Zen

Wallis: “Those guys rip on just about anything...seriously DK could probably do an air reverse on a door. “But I guess I just love being in the water and so will surf whatever will let me have the most fun in the conditions. I’ve even been hankering to get a SUP, though I got a fair bit of flak for saying that from some of the Piha Locals.” It is this go get ’em attitude that saw Anna celebrate her birthday this year in a tent, buffered by on-shores, sand and pohutukawa leaves as she waited for the Sandy Bay Hyundai Tour contest to start. “When I won the Nats I just thought well, gotta give the circuit one last shot.” - By Denise Piper

09 Surf Survey People who surf in the 09 are urged to carry out a 5 minute online survey which seeks information on usage levels for Auckland surf breaks and what users value about the breaks. The survey, being run by the Auckland Council is co-ordinated by Matthew McNeil, a Coastal Specialist at the Council and long time 09 surfer. Survey results will be used as supporting evidence in identifying regionally significant Auckland surf

breaks and in developing policy aimed at protecting these breaks from conflicting uses and developments. The anonymous online survey asks people to rank their favourite 10 Auckland surf breaks from a list of 39 breaks and answer a few questions about them. Information sought from participants includes how often they surf at each break, how many other surfers they typically observe at a break, wave

quality and amenity values for each break. We all know that the Auckland coastline is home to a large number and wide variety of surf breaks which cater for all levels of surfing abilities. However factual evidence to support the values and usage levels of Auckland surf breaks is currently lacking. It is expected that the number of people surfing will grow as the regional population grows. At the same time there will be pressure for increased development and works along the coast which will increase the pressures on the regions surf breaks.

Activities that can adversely affect surf breaks include dredging, sand extraction, reclamation, shoreline armouring, coastal structures and discharges of contaminants. Such activities may occur landward, or some distance offshore within a surf breaks ‘swell corridor’. It is hoped to get in excess of 1000 responses, so take the below survey link and contribute your surf break knowledge! Survey link: http://engage.ubiquity.co.nz/ surveys/0wkJzyNaR0ebOgjOookQlg

Rippn Ratty As you should remember- even after your 4-week bender over New Years, our very own Iain 'Ratso' Buchanan is a World Champion. He is the best Master surfer in the world....too rich??? No, the Rat is a fucken legend and really, the 2011 victory in the ASP Masters is a vindication of his status. In brief; most amount of National Open titles- tied with Wayne Parkes, first Kiwi to really give the ASP World Circuit a proper consistent nudge in the late '80's, master shaper- has shaped 1000's of boards, turned his back on retail to work his way through the ranks of ASP judging and is now the Head Judge for ASP Europe. Wears an All Back's T-shirt or a Silver fern emblem everywhere he travels- I don't mean that metaphorically- he actually- literally flies the NZ flag everywhere he goes- stone cold mutha fucken legend. That was a pretty massive week for you Ratty, Paul Botica's shock funeral, the anniversary of the CHCH quake- that you were in, and then the ASP awards night on the Goldcoast- talk about an emo rollercoaster huh? Yeah, it was a big week, Paul’s sudden death hit us all pretty hard, I was grateful I got to spend some time with him at his home on the Gold Coast in Nov. But for the rest of his bro's at Piha, they hadn't seen him in a long while and he was due to come out to stay at Piha with his family for the next week, so it was hard. The CHCH earthquake is still one of the heaviest things I've ever experienced in my life, and the city is still devastated beyond what people might think it looks like, which I mentioned in my speech, so the anniversary brought back some heavy memories of what I saw. The awards and getting my trophy was one of the most proud moments in my life and all my fellow judges surrounded me, so it was a very special moment for them too. So, how do the Awards work- did they fly you there and put you up- or did you have to pay for your ticket into the venue? ASP paid for expenses, flights, hotel and the awards ticket, I took my good mate Mark Polly Poldark, who is a great friend of Pauls as well, so that made and even more special night.

What's the Awards night like- like is it a crappy venue with 30 people there and the media just make it look busy and big? It is a massive night held in a big convention centre, there was over 600 people there, it is usually $380 a head for a ticket, includes a 3 course meal and free drinks all night, there was heaps of media; main stream TV and surf media. This year it was open to the public for the first time, so I was pretty nervous before my speech. That speech was pretty killer Rat, you bagged the Aussie's ever so subtly, highlighted the competitiveness of your fellow finalists, nailed a few well aimed words about judging and then even brought attention to the Christchurch earthquake. You'd been rehearsing in the mirror surely?! I started thinking about what I was going to say months ago, I thought the best way was to break it down into three categories; talk about the Masters contest, give NZ and the Kiwi surfers on tour some recognition and give the judges a plug about how we feel about judging. I never practiced in front of a mirror; I just had it all in my head, so I just had try and not get too nervous and blow it. I had 3 or 4 beers during the arvo, getting ready, but I just drank water the last 2 hours before going on stage, true! So you walked off stage, everyone after your speech was like- I'm having the drink with Rat- how'd your night go? After Slater rated my speech at the end of his speech, I got swamped by heaps of crew, all the judges went crazy, Occy came and gave me a big hug, which meant a lot to me, he was at the Rio Masters event also, lots of big names, Simon, Pottz, Tom Carroll etc, too many to mention, and then heaps of people wanting photos, random Kiwi's coming up to me. Miles Ratama's brother came and gave me a hongi in front of everyone; I was stoked and made me really proud to be a kiwi. Then me and Polly got stuck into lost time in the drinking department and we got pretty hammered and the night carried on into the small hours.

09 with Maz 09 Quinn

1. So Maz, we’re seeing a lot of you on the West Coast of the 09; how come? Well I’m working a bit for Quiksilver now and it’s easier working when I’m actually at the office than if working remotely from Gisborne. Plus the waves have been really good at Piha since November pretty much. I’ve only been home for New Years and Waitangi weekend both times was crap. Saying that I’ve always spent time at Piha in summer, love out there. Waves are usually so good this time of year.

4. You were a notable omission at the Nat’s- why? I hurt my back on the 2nd Jan surfing crap waves in front of my house at Wainui. Just pulled of a wave on a right and felt something go. Wasn’t too sore at first but next wave I couldn’t stand up. full lock up. Getting my wetty off was hell, a complete mission by myself. I couldn’t bend forward one bit. Anyway aggravated lower disc. Plus the physio said my pelvis was out of line as well. On my back for 3 weeks, surfing in 6 weeks. Still real sore some days after a surf.

2. What is your position at Quikkie? Team manager and marketing assistant

5. You were practising heaps at Piha too huh- you were working the hometown advantage hey? Haha yeah had all of November and some of December out there. Yeah I’ve got a good strike rate out Piha; the waves are usually over 2 foot too.

3. How you handling 09 traffic bro? Well I’m staying with my girlfriend up in Browns Bay so traffic is sweet going to work in Albany. With the new motorway it’s pretty quick going out Piha and ‘specially Mud bay. Been caught in traffic a few times but not too bad yet.

6. How’s the recovery going? It’s going well, still got a whole lot of exercises to do everyday to strengthen the muscles around the injury. Like I said before still sore after surfing and sore if I stand I one spot for too long. 7. You’re holding 4 Open National Titles, Ratso and Parksey have 5, is this a goal? Yeah it’s still a goal, would have liked to have got it by now but if it comes I’ll be over the moon but if it doesn’t well it wasn’t meant to be. I’m not a spring chicken anymore.

8. What’s the worst thing about being based in the 09? Well some say traffic but that’s not too bad where I’m staying, just being away from Gisborne and my house and bed. If swell looks amazing though I can shoot back for a few days. 9. What do you like most about the 09? My lady Lucinda’s here, Piha, good coffee.

Maz Quinn; pretty average turn for the old rooster. Seq CPL

NZSurfPix.com You’d think being a surf photographer was a dream job huh? Travelling with the pro’s to all the best breaks in the country, even the world, surrounded by bikini clad groupies arrhhhh the memories…I wish. The reality is a few degrees different, yes it is a dream job, but it’s hard yards getting baked on the sand in the sun. The expectations are high and there’s a public visual document of your performance. The clincher, you’re going to all these cool locations – you ain’t surfing buddy- you are there to document other people surf pumping waves- you [might] get to surf when it’s onshore and sloppy- i.e. not shootable.

Silas Hansen was acing his report cards as KSM’s Senior photographer for the last 3 years. In fact during this tenure KSM became NZ’s most read surf mag- outselling NZSM for the first time in it’s history. He was really cracking it- then, late last year the Aussie owners sold KSM, the new owner’s formula meant longstanding editor Chris Millet, Silas Hansen and Gav Bisman had no ongoing contract- Merry fricken Christmas fullas. Necessity is the mutha of invention; Silas kicked in his Plan ANZSURFPIX.COM the concept is simple- he shows up where the surf is good, shots absolutely everyone within range and then creates online galleries for us all to view and if you like your shots you’ll buy them. 3 months in and he’s starting to gain some real traction. I’ll be honest, I’m happily surprised at the amount of visits and ‘conversions’ nzsurfpix is getting- ‘cos the thing about us surfers is, we all wanna see pix of us surfing but we’re fucking ridiculously tight when it comes to actually shelling out a few pesos’ for the high-res. I’ve seen the emails Silas has to broach with fuckers trying to bargain him down off his rate card- which is actually cheaper than what the Indonesian pho-

tographers charge using crap 2nd hand off-cast gear. I have to say, if Silas got a shot of me actually near a lip with a NZ background in the shot, I’d have the fucker blown up living room wall size- course the chances of that are reliant on me stepping my game up than Silas. Just as we go into production Silas got dealt another blow, he was shooting with his waterhousing out at Indy’s, done, he returned to the Whale Bay carpark to discover his camera bag with over 10k of gear has been heisted…WTF talk about put the fucking steelcap in when a fulla is down. Word is the thieving pricks have a scanner that can unlock any car with an alarm- Silas’s insurance had lapsed after KSM and he couldn’t afford to keep the payments going. 10k of gear gone- it could be soul destroying, but even that night he posted the Indy’s shots to nzsurfpix.com legend. Check his site, chances are you’ll already know if Silas has shot you ‘cos he would’ve left a card on your windscreen or given you a wristband. BUY your shots, so we can all keep getting shot- CPL
