D. R. CONGO, BAKONGO/ VILI/ YOMBE 247 Zauberfigur „nkisi“ Holz, Glas, Harz/ Wachs, Sockel An der Figur finden sich vier Bohrlöcher, die ursprünglich zur Befestigung von magischer Ladung dienten.

Sie zeigt eine selbstbewußte und herausfordernde Pose, der rechte Arm ist mit gestrecktem Daumen erhoben, die Hand hielt einst einen Speer oder Messer. Die Figur ist sowohl darauf angelegt Feinde abzuschrecken, als auch darauf, übelwollende Kräfte zu zerstören.

Die rituell gefeilten Zähne sind Beleg daür, daß die Figur einen Mann von hohem Rang und Würden darstellt. Möglicherweise ist sie eine Verkörperung von „ne kongo“, einem Kulturheroen und Begründer des Königreiches Bakongo, der ein großer Krieger und Jäger war.

With his left arm planted defiantly on the hip, his right arm is raised aggressively in a fist with raised thumb; it held a removable spear or knife, which is now lost. The sculpture depicts a protective/ aggressive male, simultaneously warning foes of his power and prowess while possessing the ability to confront and destroy malevolent forces.

A man of rank and title, as evidenced by his set of ritually chipped teeth. He probably portrays „ne kongo“, the cultural hero founder of the Kongo kingdom who was a famous hunter and warrior.
