Same-Sex Marriage in Costa Rica Marriage between a couple of the same gender was legalised in Costa Rica in May this year, becoming the seventh country in Latin America to do so. This was followed by the country’s Supreme Court ruling in 2018 the act declaring the illegality of equal marriage ‘unconstitutional’, giving the government eighteen months to present the court with a strong reason as to why the act should stay in place. After failing to do so, same-sex marriage became legal on the 26th of May, the President of Costa-Rica saying, “You have begun in law what has existed in love.”
