YWCA Jamestown 2023 Impact Report

Equal, Powerful, Unstoppable Our mission at YWCA Jamestown is simple, but far from easy: We strive to eliminate racism and empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. It’s more than a mission, it’s a movement that is universal and apolitical. Our history is proud and long. YWCA Jamestown has been here since 1906 with women leading every step of the way. We have advocated for women’s empowerment since before women could vote. We have provided housing for women who needed a place to live while they stabilized and met personal and employment goals since the building was erected in 1908. We have empowered women to work providing childcare since the 1970’s. Our present is active. Last year we reached more than 3,000 Chautauqua County residents with services including child care for working parents; transitional housing for homeless women and children; training for the community to learn more about equity and bias; and reproductive health education for adolescents. Our future is forward, because it is a movement being built in partnership with the community for the community. For us, that means a future in which families are free from abuse during custody exchanges. So, we are enhancing our Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Program to provide intentional services for those experiencing domestic violence and educating offenders to prevent additional abuse. It means a future in which young women are empowered to be leaders and have the confidence to address systemic and community issues. So, we are implementing a Choosing Action Program with facilitated leadership, employment, and community action opportunities for teen girls. And it means a future where everyone belongs and has opportunities to thrive. So, we are stepping in as the backbone organization for the I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility) Coalition of Chautauqua County. Together with community partners we will work towards developing solutions to challenges faced by Chautauqua County’s Black/African American and Latino/Hispanic communities. I am honored to be part of YWCA Jamestown’s mission: a call that has endured for decades, and one that will continue until the mission is met. And, as I learned when I first started, we are not alone. I am delighted to be in community with so many other organizations working for emergent causes who are working to make positive change. We value our community — all people — and will not stop advocating for their voice to be heard. We will keep moving our mission forward and building a movement toward a just future together.

ELIMINATING RACISM

Our Social Justice and Race Equity Program YWCA Jamestown focuses our efforts on bringing educational, advocacy, and public awareness events to the community. YWCA Jamestown has introduced community reading and discussion opportunities for all ages of the community, engaging the youth with our Book M.A.R.K. (Motivating Aspiring Readers with Kindness) program and offering book club discussions for adults to participate in meaningful conversations on topics of race, racism, discrimination, and cultural differences.

Childcare & Out of School Time Programs Providing safe and affordable care for children is crucial for working women. Further, it is proven that strong programs build resilience in children. We believe that all families regardless of income should have access to systems of early care and education. Our experienced and compassionate teachers not only provide exceptional care for your little ones, but they also prepare young children to succeed cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally. We provide high-quality child care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years and enriching after school programs for youth in grades K-8 at several Jamestown Public School buildings and we offer enriching summer care at the YW Lake Lodge and through LEAP at JPS.
