Over the last few years, YWCA Evanston/North Shore has focused on building -- building flexibility and resilience to navigate upheaval and change, and building a physical space to grow and deepen our impact. It has been a tremendous amount of change in a short period of time! On October 1, we celebrated the culmination of this remarkable adaptation and growth by opening our doors and sharing our updated campus and expanded capabilities with the community – and with all of you.
YWCA Evanston/North Shore is a non-profit social justice organization dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women.
A board member recently shared one of her favorite quotes with me: “The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths to it are not found but made. And, the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.” YWCA Evanston/North Shore started on this path by envisioning a renovation and expansion about four years ago. But we couldn’t have turned that vision into reality without the purpose and passion of all of you. Whether you were there at the beginning of this journey or just recently purchased a commemorative brick, you have been an integral part of this monumental transformation. Your impact will be felt in Evanston and the 15 other communities we serve for generations to come.
Here are a few highlights of our bigger, better facility: •

Our expanded, trauma-informed emergency shelter provides twice as much capacity for survivors of domestic violence and emphasizes dignity, healing and safety. Our new community support center allows us to serve more women, children and families who are affected by violence and trauma. Five new spacious, state-of-the-art classrooms now provide workforce development, financial education and training, equity workshops and consulting services, along with space to foster collaboration to advance racial and gender equity. The renovated and enlarged Flying Fish aquatics center provides an upgraded and welcoming environment for all who seek health, safety and personal growth in our pools. It also offers more gathering space.

Doubling capacity, delivering hope Domestic Violence Program
Our new emergency shelter, which opened in the summer of 2021, improves our ability to serve survivors and their families. THE PRIVACY AND SAFETY AFFORDED BY THIS STATE-OF-THE-START, TRAUMA-INFORMED SPACE MEANS WE CAN OFFER SURVIVORS A PORT IN THE STORM IN WAYS WE COULDN’T BEFORE.

OVER 400 SURVIVORS FILED ORDERS OF PROTECTION WITH ONE OF OUR LEGAL ADVOCATES, WHO HELPED THEM NAVIGATE THE COMPLEX LEGAL SYSTEM AND FIND PROTECTION FROM THEIR ABUSERS.
If a pandemic were to occur again, the private rooms in our new shelter would mitigate the need for hotels and other stopgap protective measures, which we have employed in the past. Moreover, our new shelter doubles the capacity of our old one, allowing more survivors to access our services and find paths to healing and freedom. In 2021, we expanded on the lessons learned in 2020. Responsiveness and flexibility now permeate every aspect of our work, allowing us to adapt to any situation. We are continually learning new ways to deliver services, strengthen our community partnerships, and build adjustment and resilience into everything we do. Here are some highlights of 2021: l We provided 2,370 nights of shelter to survivors seeking safety from abuse. l 24 women and their children had space to rebuild their lives at Bridges, our longer-term housing for survivors. l 413 clients received services from our Legal Advocacy Team, who helped obtain 220 Orders of Protection. l 135 participants completed our 40-hour Domestic Violence Training, learning how to better support survivors.

OUR FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE TRAINING PROGRAMS HELP WOMEN BUILD THE SKILLS THEY NEED FOR ECONOMIC STABILITY. AND INDEPENDENCE.
OUR CAMPUS EXPANSION INCLUDES FIVE NEW STATE OF THE ART CLASSROOMS TO PROVIDE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL WELLNESS EDUCATION AND TRAINING.
In 2021, our economic empowerment programs, which were held virtually in order to adhere to public health guidelines, were more important than ever as those who had lost jobs or were furloughed due to the pandemic looked for ways to recover economic security. In 2021: l We held six virtual Financial Education Workshops, helping 52 women learn about the basics of investing and planning for the future. l We held 17 Basic Money Management classes, training 162 participants about budgeting, credit, and the dangers of predatory lending, a 160% increase from the prior year. l Due to safety protocols, we paused our YWCulinary Program in 2021. Our redesigned program, launching in spring 2022, will offer students hands-on experience in our newly designed shelter. YWCulinary students will be working alongside our chef to learn culinary skills and serve healthy professionally prepared meals to our domestic violence shelter residents. l 42 women participated in YW Tech Lab, improving the

women graduated from our first two cohorts of YW Tech Lab, setting themselves up for careers in tech
trajectory of their careers and their earning potential. These participants also benefited from the expertise and networking advice of the members of our Women in Tech Council, who represent organizations such as Google, Kraft-Heinz, Exelon, and Northwestern University. Virtual classrooms helped us continue to deliver programming throughout the pandemic. We now imagine a future in which we are able to offer financial education, coaching, and workforce training both virtually and in-person, reaching more women and deepening our impact.

Increasing racial and gender equity Equity Institute
YWCA’s commitment to racial and gender justice and civil rights is longstanding and unwavering.
This made me think harder about moments when I let implicit bias creep into my thoughts in negative ways. - a Racial Equity workshop participant

WE INVITED THE PUBLIC TO PARTICIPATE VIRTUALLY IN THE STAND AGAINST RACISM AND THE RACE AGAINST HATE– AND THEY RESPONDED!
The events of last few years have pushed many people to reckon with the reality of racism. This has accelerated the demand for our Equity Institute programming. At the same time, the restrictions of the pandemic have forced us to quickly find new ways of delivering this critical work. 2021 highlights: l People from all walks of life joined us in May for our annual Equity Summit, which covered topics such as reparations on a local and national level, equitable housing in Evanston, and the Black Queer Equity Index. l 276 people participated in a Racial Equity Workshop, a 700% increase in the months since the pandemic started. l Our Equity Institute was called upon frequently by local companies and institutions as society yearned for change. Contracted consulting work of the Equity Institute expanded by 58 percent last year. l We have begun or deepened partnerships with Chicago Public Schools, Oakton Community College, Northwestern University, and the City of Evanston, all of whom have sought out the expertise of YWCA Evanston/North Shore as

they engage in internal equity assessment and planning. l While we couldn’t gather to Stand Against Racism or Race Against Hate, we invited the public to participate virtually – and they responded! Many shared their supportive, anti-racist messages on social media. YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s ongoing racial justice work has created space for all of us to hold difficult – but essential – conversations on race and injustice.

Fostering equity, confidence, and water safety Flying Fish Aquatics
Why is Flying Fish Aquatics different? We are changing old norms with our mission-driven programs, providing access to the lifelong health, safety, and personal growth opportunities that swimming provides. OUR SWIMMERS LEARNED TO ADAPT TO CHANGING PUBLIC HEALTH RESTRICTIONS. WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT THE FAMILIES WE SERVE WERE UNDERSTANDING, FLEXIBLE, AND SUPPORTIVE.

SWIMMERS PARTICIPATING IN THE 24-HOUR OZ RELAY RAISED $15,000 TO SUPPORT OUR AQUATICS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YOUNG SWIMMERS.
In this challenging year, we focused on doing what we could to provide opportunities for community members, young and old, to find respite in the water. Our aquatics staff continued to stay nimble and flexible, providing programs to as many people as possible while keeping Covid-19 safety protocols at the forefront. l As 2021 unfolded, despite the limitations of the pandemic, we focused on what we could do -- not what we couldn’t do -- and gradually expanded swim instruction and swim team participation. l Older members of the swim team began attending limitedcapacity swim meets in late spring. And younger members of the swim team completed a delayed swim marathon in May, raising over $22,000 to support the mission of the YWCA. l The strength and resilience of the Flying Fish community was evident throughout the year, whether through supporting the campus expansion, quickly adjusting to everchanging public health guidelines, or enduring construction challenges like the absence of our lobby, locker rooms, and parking lot.

l Despite the many obstacles of the past year, swimmers continued to line up at our temporary door on Ridge Avenue. Our dedicated staff ushered them in, and, at least for a little while, in the oases of our pools, life felt somewhat normal. Our aquatics programs are still not operating at full capacity due to the pandemic. But with our beautiful new upgrades and expanded space, we envision opening our doors even wider and offering access and opportunity in more ways than we ever dreamed possible.

YWCA SHOP FOR GOOD AND CROWDED CLOSET HELP REDUCE WASTE, BUILD COMMUNITY, AND EXPAND OUR MISSION.
YWCA Shop for Good, located at 1107 Central Avenue in Wilmette, enhances our work in multiple ways. Acquired in 2018, the YWCA Shop for Good is an exciting draw for both volunteers and shoppers, who learn about our work each time they step inside this charming, high-quality resale boutique. One hundred percent of proceeds from the shop benefit our programs and services. YWCA Crowded Closet, acquired in 2020, is a high-end women’s consignment shop located at 808 Dempster Street in Evanston. Like the Shop for Good, proceeds from the Crowded Closet fund our programs, including our domestic violence and women’s advancement services. In addition, women in our economic advancement programs and survivors of domestic violence we serve are encouraged to shop both stores at no cost. The synergy between the Crowded Closet and the Shop for Good has increased our visibility and enhanced our presence in our local communities, leading more people to join us in our mission.
