Great Expectations By

Charles Dickens

Dickens’ timeless classic is re-imagined in an epic stage version which relocates Pip’s extraordinary journey to nineteenth century India. Peopled by some of his most colourful and memorable characters, Dickens’ epic novel has been lovingly adapted for the stage by leading playwright Tanika Gupta. Following a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, young Pip is given an unexpected chance to better himself by visiting the reclusive and mysterious English lady, Miss Havisham. In the decaying colonial grandeur of her house, Pip falls in love with Estella and helped by an anonymous benefactor, Pip moves to the bustling city to pursue his dream of winning Estella’s heart and of becoming part of the educated elite.

The International smash hit Spirit of the Dance is one of the most successful shows ever to come out of Ireland and has been seen by more than thirty million people in fifteen countries around the world. Irish in origin and bursting with raw energy, this explosive and powerful show combines heartpounding Irish Dance with the sensual Latino rhythms of Flamenco and Red Hot Salsa in a thrilling production of strength and passion. Featuring highlights from the past 12 years, thunderous applause and standing ovations at every performance, Spirit of the Dance is one of the greatest dance shows ever.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon; his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, Private Peaceful is by third Children’s Laureate, Michael Morpurgo. His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Alan Bennett is the writer of The History Boys, Talking Heads and The Madness of George III; his latest play, Habit of Art, was a recent hit at the National Theatre. The Lady in the Van is based on his own recollections of the indomitable Miss Shepherd and is, as you would expect from Bennett, a beautifully observed, sharply intelligent and wonderfully witty drama.

Creative Cow presents

Barbara Nice – Hiya Look Back in Anger & Higher By John Osborne Directed by Amanda Knott

With Janice Connolly That`s “Barbara”... as in “Streisand”! ... and “Nice”... as in the “biscuit”!

Creative Cow presents the 55th anniversary Tour of John osborne’s masterpiece Look Back in Anger.

Everyone’s favorite housewife, Barbara – a frumpy, friendly and funny, post-menopausal mother of five from Stockport – believes in bargains, Take a Break magazine and getting the most from life.

The story of Jimmy Porter, a disillusioned graduate who spends his days ranting and railing his furies against the world that let him down, much to the suffering of his wife alison.

This well-observed character is instantly recognisable, and likeable, drawing even the most cynical of audiences and taking them along for the ride – even if it’s her coach journey down from the North-West or her next shopping trip to her favorite Poundstretchers.

When it was first performed at london’s Royal Court in 1956 it was regarded as a turning point in modern drama and swiftly coined the original phrase ‘angry young man’.

In demand on the comedy circuit, Janice Connolly has appeared with Johnny Vegas and Peter Kay, and is now wowing sell-out audiences all over the country. She returns to the Mill Studio after a complete sell-out last year!

With Creative Cow’s distinct production style, performed with skill and sensitivity - this will be a crisp and exciting revival of a brilliant piece of classic British theatre. www.creativecow.co.uk

Latin! Or Tobacco and Boys

By Harold Pinter Two hit men, one basement, and a mysterious hatch... Ben and Gus await their orders, but ‘Soup of the day, liver and onions, and jam tart’ is not quite what they were expecting. one of Pinter’s earliest and most famous plays, The Dumb Waiter is a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the two men grow more and more bewildered and frustrated, desperately waiting for answers.

By Caryl Churchill Directed by Samantha Dent Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9 is set in colonial africa and modern-day Britain, the play discusses relationships – between women and men, men and men, women and women - africa, power, work, politics, money, mothers, children, grandmothers, Queen Victoria and sex! Cloud 9 was the first play that gained wide recognition for Churchill, who also wrote Top Girls and the award-winning Serious Money.

“Brilliantly funny”

ByXXXXX Catherine Muschamp Performed by Eileen Page Eleanor of aquitaine, the only woman ever to have been Queen of france and Queen of England, now 82 and dying in her convent of fontevrault, defends herself against the ghosts of her past, whom she believes have come to judge her. Eileen Page returns to the Mill Studio with her highly acclaimed “tour de force” performance as Henry II’s Queen, who was married previously to louis VII of france. “ Page delivers a beautifully paced performance that should perhaps best be seen as an impressive calling card for a major classical actress deserving of fresh roles” THE STAGE

THE DAiLY TELEGRAPH

By John Godber Directed by Genna Hill Every town has its Shakers, the oh-so trendy cocktail bar where everyone wants to be seen: from the check-out girls to the yuppies to the local lads tittering at the thought of a ‘long Slow Comfortable Screw’. We are given a wickedly funny glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waitresses, offering a fascinating view of the reality that lurks behind the plastic palms and Piña Colada! Watch the ‘Pink lady’s’ serve you a ‘Cheeky Vimto’ looking out at the ‘Tequila Sunset’ with this unique collaboration of Guildford School of acting’s past and present... and that’s Shaken, not Stirred!

John Betjeman in Madame Blavatsky Lives Metro-Land

A play with music by Peter Gill

Written and presented by Kevin J. Last

A new comedy by Joan Greening

During the Great War, Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, a few short miles behind the front line, became a haven for thousands of allied troops – a ‘home from home’ where they enjoyed some home comforts and remembered the men that they really were. Run by a diminutive chaplain named Tubby Clayton the house became known by its army signaller’s code of Toc H and ultimately would be the inspiration for the association with that name.

In 1973 the then poet laureate, John Betjeman, made a landmark documentary film about suburbia, tracing the social history of the Metropolitan Railway from Baker Street to farthest Buckinghamshire.

Have you ever wanted to know about the future? Do you dream of wealth and happiness? Madame Blavatsky Lives will change your mind forever. It is a comedy that shows the affect of an all-knowing spiritualist on the lives of three women. Two of them are suddenly faced with dreadful futures and the other is suffused in happiness.

This play recreates the humour, music and wonderful atmosphere of this inspirational house.

Using extracts from the script, slides and his own poetry, John Betjeman in Metro-land relives this journey as a portrait, not just of suburbia, but of the poet and broadcaster. The performers all spent their formative years along this most ambitious of underground lines and include personal reminiscences to place alongside those of the man himself.

Which one of them will be faced with their worst fear? Will the predictions come true? All of them? None of them? This play will make you laugh at their predicaments and cry at their heartbreaks. You will never think of fortune telling in the same way again!

The World’s Wife Adapted from the poems by Carol Ann Duffy Directed by Di Sherlock With Linda Marlowe A new stage version of the acclaimed poems that imagine the wives’ perspective of famous men through the ages. From Mrs Faust and Frau Freud to Queen Kong and Mrs Midas, this delightful show slices through history and myth, whilst casting an astute glance over the modern world. Laced with dark humour and acerbic wit, this passionate exposé will enthral lovers of Duffy’s poems and newcomers alike. Linda Marlowe has enjoyed great acclaim for her previous solo work including Berkoff’s Women. This latest show tours direct from an acclaimed West End season.

News Flash 24 Following their success last year with Motion Like Dance MLD Dance Company returns with their new show News Flash 24. For one night only the Mill Studio will become the set for the only TV show that tells you how it really is; looking at the current issues in today’s society including the recession, drug abuse, fashion and more. So take a look at life through the lens and realise how the media spins you - the reader, the viewer, the listener, the story, and realise you have your own mind and don’t have to believe everything you read, see or hear.

“Brilliant, witty, subversive… What Linda Marlowe does in performing these poems is remarkable. This never feels like a onewoman show because the poems combine to describe Everywoman – Everywife”

Join us for a lecture and discussion during an evening of nostalgia and romance with music, narration and rhyme celebrating Betjeman’s love of trains, architecture and the follies of mankind.

With an enchanting mesh of mime, masking, movement and the music of voice, AJTC conjure storms and apparitions, lay bare treasons and counterplot before finally transporting you to a ‘brave new world’ of love and reconciliation. By Kate Betts

With Rosemary Hawthorne

On the cusp of her thirtieth birthday Claire takes a man home for the very first time; a man who also claims to be Jesus Christ. Fascinated by her story, he attempts to help her work through her past and problems with her estranged brother and the struggle of losing both parents.

Following another sell out performance, Rosemary Hawthorne returns to the Mill Studio as The Knicker Lady; the hit show that romps through the history of the humble knicker with a tempo and hilarity that leaves audiences – both male and female – spellbound and dying for more!

The play deals with difficult themes and leaves the audience feeling uncomfortable and challenges their perspective of familial relationships. “The play is as rich, complex, intelligent, provocative, difficult, moving, as ever’” Patrick Sandford, Nuffield Theatre

The royal couple request the pleasure of your company at their wedding reception, a spectacular garden party.

Surrounded by old suitcases, boxes and hat stands, Rosemary delves through two hundred and fifty years of bloomers, briefs and bustles, and presents the myriad of colourful characters that wore them, in a unique and enigmatic style of her own.

Housebound By Nick Lane Jim is fat, fifty-eight and fed up with everything. He’ll moan about everything, from speeding cars to noisy neighbours, making Victor Meldrew look like an amateur. And doesn’t his wife Lucy know it? Stuck at home with him rabbiting on every day since his early retirement, and nowhere to escape to… she’s housebound. And every day is starting to blend into every other… until one Halloween, when a rash act changes everything. A comedy for anyone who ever felt frustrated but didn’t know what to do once they were. From the writer of Hull Truck hits, My Favourite Summer (“Blissfully funny” The Daily Telegraph) and Me & Me Dad (“Beautiful and tenderly written” – Yorkshire Post)

Call Mr Robeson Written and performed by Tayo Aluko Directed by Olusola Oyeleye Paul Robeson is a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When he gets too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, is harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. This rollercoaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable life highlights how his activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. Winner of the Argus Angel Award for Artistic Excellence, the show features famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River, and a spectacularly defiant testimony to the Senate House Un-American Activities Committee. “A thrilling, moving and marvelously entertaining musical drama. Aluko’s singing of Robeson songs like Ol’ Man River and Steal Away is totally soulful and convincing – just like this show!” “First rate.”

Lord Byron and his greatest friends – including Percy Shelley and Mary Godwin – are staying at his Villa Diodati, on the shore of Lake Geneva. While a storm swirls across the lake, another rages inside the villa as the writers amuse themselves with philosophical debate, and by telling ghost stories. A challenge is set to see who can write the most frightening tale... From my Sleep with Horror is a haunting psychological exploration of the momentous night which inspired Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and which was probably the most important night in the history of Gothic Horror. This will help to ensure the future of Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. We have already made great progress towards this target, but we still need more audience members, like you, to support this campaign. For further information on how you can become one of our Angels please pick up a leaflet from the Theatre or call us on 01483 535818.
