In November of 1971, the officers of the Suburban Philadelphia Soccer Coaches Association were in contact with High School Representatives of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the intended desire of naming athletes to the High School All-American Team from our state and laying the groundwork for a statewide coaches’ association in Pennsylvania. It was their hope and desire that this statewide association would eventually pave the way for a statewide playoff system.
On May 13, 1972, the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association was officially established. In December of 1972, the first All-State High School Soccer Team was chosen by the Association. However, the goal of a statewide playoff lingered. Interesting correspondence is recorded between the PSCA, the PIAA Board of Control and the NSCAA. A letter was placed on Governor Shapp’s desk. In November of 1973, the first official statewide playoff system was put in place and the state honored its first state champion.
Today, the PSCA represents soccer coaches in Pennsylvania’s public, private and parochial schools as well as coaches in the colleges and universities of this state. In association with the United Soccer Coaches Association, PSCA seeks to provide input on rule changes and other improvements for soccer as well as providing an opportunity for coaches to meet and share ideas and concerns for promoting soccer throughout Pennsylvania. Most importantly, PSCA encourages and recognizes the development of young soccer players from our state, many of whom we are honoring here today.

W. Gene Davis was a principal, teacher, and soccer coach for 25 years at Octorara High School. He was an All-America player from West Chester University and led his team to the NCAA semi-finals in 1959. Gene passed away at the age of 47 on November 17, 1985. Each Honoree receives a copy of a letter written and read by his wife, Beth at the NSCAA convention after his passing. In the letter, Beth describes Gene. “Simply put, soccer was Gene’s life blood. It was his best medium for expressing his life philosophy, and it served him well.” This award honors Gene’s accomplishments and contributions to soccer in Pennsylvania.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Coach Wayne Capra for being such an exceptional coach and mentor to teenage girls like me in the 1990s and to the hundreds of teenagers he coached before and after me. In a time when so much focus is placed on material success, Coach Capra stood out as someone who truly cared about developing his players both on and off the field. He not only helped shape me into a better soccer player but also served as an incredible role model for what it means to be a dedicated and compassionate adult. His humor and encouragement made practices enjoyable, and his willingness to let us make mistakes and grow from them created an environment where we felt safe to push ourselves and truly fall in love with the game. Coach Capra’s passion and guidance were invaluable, and I will always respect and admire him for the impact he had on my life and so many others. Thank you, Coach Capra.
Amanda Smith Ray, Beadling
Congratulations! I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the positive impact you have had on my life. I will never forget the inspirational talk you gave me the night before we beat Mt. Lebanon my senior year. Your approach to coaching has had a guiding effect far beyond the soccer field. There are so many things I learned from you that I have carried with me throughout my life. You taught me the value of hard work, determination, and the most important lesson how to be resilient. I didn’t realize at the time you were preparing us for our futures far beyond our life as a soccer player. You taught me how to lead and how to believe in myself when I had doubts. You were always there to support us no matter how much we were struggling individually or as a team and you knew what to say to get us back on track. Thank you for your dedication, your guidance, and unwavering support over the years. You have made a lasting impact in my life and I am truly grateful. Congratulations on your induction.
Tara Albert Lavy #15, Upper St. Clair
Coach Capra has had a huge impact on my life. He instilled the values of determination, discipline, respect, teamwork and resilience in all of his players. He truly cared about his players as people and inspired and motivated us to reach our goals in both soccer and in life. Holly Law, Upper St. Clair
Coach Capra was one of a kind. He always pushed us to be our best but was also funny, playful, kind, and supportive. He allowed us to be ourselves and was never strict or mean. I knew I could always go to him. I am grateful to have learned so much in my soccer career from Coach Capra and would not have made it the 4 years without him! Ashley Ray, South Fayette
It is very easy to offer words and congratulations to Coach Capra! We coached together for both high school and club soccer, and I cannot say enough about Wayne’s soccer passion and intensity, commitment, good nature, and intellect for the game. He truly and deeply cared about the players and the sport. It was my honor to Coach with him and I will always remember those times fondly. Congratulations and well deserved! Brienne Colby Sembrat
Not only was Coach Capra a great soccer coach, but he was also a great mentor, teacher, and friend. He pushed us to do our best on and off the field while giving us room to be our goofy, fun-loving selves. As part of the “Dynamic Duo,” I will never forget how much fun I had being a part of Coach Capra’s team. Kayley Renz, South Fayette

SOCCER IN WESTERN PA CANNOT BE DISCUSSED WITHOUT MENTIONING WAYNE CAPRA. HE IS A SOCCER LEGEND! I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE COACHED BY HIM WHEN I PLAYED AT MT. LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL IN THE 90’S. WE WON THE FIRST EVER PA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1992 WITH HIM AS ONE OF OUR COACHES. IN MY FOUR YEARS AT LEBO, WE WON FOUR SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS, WE WERE TWO-TIME WPIAL FINALISTS, WPIAL CHAMPIONS AND WE WON A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. WAYNE CAPRA IS A LEGEND AND IS SO DESERVING OF THIS HONOR! -LIBBY MASCARO (MT. LEBANON)
SOME OF MY MOST CHERISHED MEMORIES WILL ALWAYS INCLUDE THE WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WON BY THE USC PANTHERS UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF COACH WAYNE CAPRA WAYNE POURED HIS HEART AND SOUL INTO THE TEAM, ALWAYS STRIKING THE PERFECT BALANCE OF COMPASSION, TOUGHNESS, AND STRATEGY HIS INFLUENCE WENT BEYOND THE FIELD HE WAS A TRUE LEADER AND AN INSPIRATION TO ALL OF US IT WAS A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE HIM AS A COACH, AND HIS POSITIVE IMPACT ON AND OFF THE PITCH WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY EVERY PLAYER WHO HAD THE HONOR OF PLAYING FOR HIM -MANDY LAW HUCKS (UPPER ST CLAIR)
WAYNE CAPRA IS THE KIND OF COACH WHO INSTILLS PRIDE AND HUMILITY IN HIS PLAYERS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS NEED NOTHING MORE THAN TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY, AND HE DID THAT, WHICH EMPOWERED US TO TAKE OURSELVES SERIOUSLY THERE IS NO GREATER GIFT AT SUCH A VULNERABLE TIME IN LIFE THAN THE REASSURANCE THAT YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS MATTER, THAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE GREATNESS, AND THAT YOU CAN DO SO GRACEFULLY AND WITH DIPLOMACY AS YOUR NORTH STAR WAYNE EMBODIES ALL THOSE TRAITS AND SO MUCH MORE HE TAUGHT ME A LOT I AM FOREVER IN HIS DEBT OTTS -EMILIE TRICE (UPPER ST CLAIR)
“COACH CAPRA WAS SOMEONE WHO PUSHED ME TO BE AND DO BETTER. THE ENCOURAGEMENT TO TRAIN AND BE THE BEST FOR MY TEAM STILL MOTIVATES ME TO THIS DAY. HIS CONTINUOUS SUPPORT FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOCCER ATHLETICS GOES TO SHOW HOW PASSIONATE AND OPTIMISTIC HE IS TOWARDS A GROWING SPORT. THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE SPORT!
-YOUR “RANGY” GOALIE, SARAH PRUSS (SOUTH FAYETTE)

PLAYING SOCCER AT USC IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS THAT I HAVE EVER DONE. I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE BEEN ON THAT TEAM AND IT WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT WAYNE HE GAVE ME A SPOT ON THE TEAM WHEN OTHERS MIGHT NOT HAVE- I HAD HEART BUT NOT A LOT OF TALENT I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT HE DID FOR ME. I LOVE MR. CAPRA. -DEIDRE BAUER (UPPER ST CLAIR)
I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW THANKFUL I AM THAT I HAD MY DAD AS MY SOCCER COACH AS A KID HE COACHED ME FROM ORIENT IN-HOUSE, STM, ON ONE OF THE FIRST GIRLS BEADLING TEAMS, STATE CUPS, REGIONALS AND ALL OF THE PRACTICES AND SOCCER CAMPS IN BETWEEN FROM THE TEARS AS A GK AT ORIENT TO A “FEW” OF THE YELLOW CARDS THAT I “EARNED” IN CLEVELAND AGAINST THE INTERNATIONALS- HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN BY MY SIDE I FEEL SO LUCKY TO HAVE SPENT MOST OF MY CHILDHOOD DOING WHAT WE BOTH LOVE MOST- SOCCER- TOGETHER AS AN ADULT, I WAS ABLE TO COACH BY HIS SIDE AND GAIN A WHOLE NEW PERSPECTIVE AND RESPECT FOR HIM –AMBER CAPRA (UPPER ST CLAIR)
I’VE HAD THE UNIQUE PLEASURE OF KNOWING MR WAYNE CAPRA FOR 20 YEARS, STARTING WHEN HE COACHED MY SISTER ALL THE WAY UP TO SEEING HIM EVERY DAY AT OUR CURRENT JOB HE HAS A WAY OF SPEAKING THAT LETS YOU KNOW TO TAKE HIM MORTALLY SERIOUS UNLESS HE LAUGHS FIRST, THEN ITS GAME ON CAPRA ALWAYS WANTED TO WIN, HIS EYE WAS ALWAYS ON THE HORIZON LOOKING AT THAT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME B UT NOT AT THE COST OF HIS GIRLS ONE SEASON WE HAD ONE OF OUR MOST QUIET TEAMMATES PIPE UP AT THE END OF THE YEAR, SHARING HOW GRATEFUL SHE WAS JUST TO BE APART OF THE TEAM, JUST TO BE INCLUDED IN THE COMRADERY OF IT ALL. SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUR WORST PLAYER AND WAS ON THE BENCH MORE THAN MOST BUT THAT DIDN’T MATTER TO HER AT ALL HIS POLICY WAS NEVER TO CUT PLAYERS, HE WANTED ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO BE A BLE TO BE ON THE TEAM REGARDLESS OF SKILL. SO WE NEVER PLAYED FOR OUR SCHOOL OR THE SCORE OF THE GAME, WE PLAYED FOR CAPRA HIS LEGACY ISN’T ONLY HIS LONG HISTORY OF WINNING TEAMS, ITS IN THE STRONG WOMEN AND BONDS WE FORMED ALONG THE WAY.- DIANE GRAESER (SOUTH FAYETTE)
