PUBLISHER’S NOTE

October 2013 will stay etched on my mind as an eventful month as it brought a charming addition to our family - Bharath, whom my sister Divya married. Divya needs no introduction as she is the co-founder and editor of red. I wish them both a great married life and bright future. Thank you, Akka, for gifting me with a lasting friend. In this issue, I have given the vignettes of their wedding which was graced by celebrities from political, social, business, industrial and film circles. I thank all our guests for the love and affection they showered on us. The 7-day event left us a wee-bit exhausted but very gratified. Coming to this issue, breaking the tradition of spotlighting a single star, this time I splash Rana and Richa on the cover. While Richa is riding the crest of Bhai success, Rana is flexing his muscles for the upcoming Bahubali. Haute gives the details. The wheels of Sri Gopal Automotive Ltd, are run by a dynamic Srinadh. We capture the extent of his vision. Bisket Srikant set a new trend in organizing film previews in an ostentatious style and regaling celebrities. The Gennext focuses on the work of these two young men. Dr. Merle Fernandes has given new vision to eye health care in the region with her dedicated services as a cornea expert. Now thousands look upto her. An exceptionally enterprising Kamini Saraf has taken Hyderabad’s fashion quotient to a new high with her impeccably organized events. Eve talks of their tasks and targets. Mr. MVV Satyanarayana builds high rises but stays grounded. His chic and style are reflected not only in his projects, but also in his persona. Dr. Guru Reddy has switched his loyalties from haves to have-nots to give that much needed edge to medical services at home. He built a mega hospital in Hyderabad to prove his point that the cost has nothing to do with the quality of service. Meet the stylish builder and cheerful doc in our Life section. Before I wind up I must share with you my unbounded happiness over Chief Minister Mr. N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s visit to our residence. He came to bless the newly-weds. In a very pleasant aside, he patted me for red and said his wife had been an avid reader of the magazine. I owe this success to my readers. I thank you all for making it happen. Your love strengthens my resolve to further improve the magazine, not compromising on the standards I already set in keeping you informed and entertained.

V I Z A G VISIT RAISES MANY AN EYEBROW Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy’s recent visit to Congress leader and former MLA Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy’s house has given a gist to the rumour mills and raised many a speculation among the political circles. There is a buzz that Kiran is going to float a new party following the differences with the Centre over the state bifurcation issue. A few think that Kiran Reddy is trying to reinforce his strength and base in the region, by meeting Reddy, one of the senior party leaders. There is also a section that thinks it is the caste-affinity, whereas others think it was for old times’ sake because both the leaders enjoyed a perfect rapport as the chief whip and Legislator from 2004 to 2009. However, close circles of Gurumurthy Reddy say that the CM had responded to the invitation of his daughter’s wedding. Only time will reveal the real purpose of Kiran’s Gajuwaka visit.

HUNT ON FOR INCHARGE MINISTER Vizag district is orphaned in the absence of an incharge minister, ever since Dharmana Prasada Rao stepped down from his post following corruption charges levelled against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation. It seems the Chief Minister is on the lookout for an apt replacement for Dharmana. However, Kiran was at a loss to decide whom to choose. It is no easy task to find someone who can match the stature and calibre of Dharmana. During his recent visit to the region, Kiran had asked the party leaders to suggest a name. However, as is the Congmen’s wont, there were two groups each suggesting a different name. One need not make three guesses for what the groups are. One headed by Ganta while the other ruled by P Balaraju. Erasu Pratap Reddy’s prospects seem to be bright. Of course, one doesn’t know if Erasu’s name was suggested by which of these two groups. Or is it some other leader’s suggestion? Now the ball is in Kiran’s court.

HOPPING WITH HOPE Hopping about different political parties in search of greener pastures is not new to our politicians. It is learnt that Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao along with some like minded colleagues will switch loyalties to Telugu Desam Party. Everyone knows that Ganta was pitch forked into politics by none other than TDP supremo N.Chandrababu Naidu. Influenced by his idol Chiru’s cinema glamour perhaps, he later joined Praja Rajyam Party and the rest is a history (mystery) – PRP’s merger with Congress. Ganta seems to have suddenly become pro-active and has been mobilizing a number of leaders towards TDP after he had a quiet meeting with Chandrababu. Sources say that Ganta is leading a few MLAs including Avanti Srinivas, Chintalapudi Venkataramaiah, Panchakarla Ramesh and Kannababu Raju to jump on the TDP bandwagon sensing the fact that Congress is a sinking ship in the state.

VARMA’S VENTURES It appears to be raining tiaras in Vizag this year. It’s just been a month since Miss Vizag was held. The city is once again gearing up for one more gala event. The latter is going to be the first of its kind, which will add Mrs. Vizag category. Yes, you heard us right! To be organized by Jaichandra Varma, CEO, OM Jai Management Network Services, the upcoming event will host other titles too like Man of the Year and Little Miss and Master Vizag through his ‘Vizag Beauty Pageant 2013’. It has planned interesting free grooming classes which is a bonus for the participants. A few social activities like Green Marathon, beach clean, medical camp etc are also on the anvil. The firm has created a page on FB, which is flooded with likes and response, showing the popularity it has gained even before it occurred. People are waiting for the event with bated breath.

(UN)AWARENESS The Pink Ribbon Walk proved to be a huge success in Hyderabad with celebrities, socialites, elite and people from different walks of society participating in it. Now, Vizag has been chosen for this event. However, despite the fact that the recognition it earned it couldn’t whip up any enthusiasm locally. If the talk making rounds to be believed, the local organizers didn’t do their homework properly. They had chosen a date ignoring the warning of the meteorological department which predicted torrential rains. The organizers should have taken equal interest in informing people that the event was put off due to rains. Vizagites feel that organizers, who promoted the event to this extent, should have the same zeal to keep the people posted about cancellation and of the deferred date.

RAVISHING HARSHITA She personifies elegance. Tall and endowed with slender figure, she is a perfect example of beauty. She also proved that she is brainy too, taking care of the mega ATR Empire. Yes, she is none other than Harshita Rayudu, wife of Avinash, automobile tycoon and favourite daughter-in-law of AT Rayudu! She certainly is a head turner with her amazing dress sense and perfect looks, wherever she goes. While a few are impressed with her glamour quotient, a few others compete to match her style. Many socialites wonder how she manages to keep herself so young and pretty despite all her tasks as mother and business woman while others try to extract a few tips from her.

POPULAR PARAMITA If elegance and grace can win the race, it is just a cakewalk for her. She can easily march away with quite a few hearts tucked away in her hands in the first instant itself. Paramita Banerjee, Executive Manager of Palm Beach Hotel, can charm her way into anyone’s heart with her natural elegance and elan. Added to her advantage are her PR skills. Equally worth mentioning is her popularity. Her recent birthday bash proves it beyond doubt that the lady is strong on this front. Almost who-is-who of the town, page-3 people and celebrities from all walks of life were there in full force, that too with their spouses. The birthday girl was all glitz and glamour in a simple yet elegant white sari at the eventful do at the Dusk. There was an overflow of food and drinks. The guests had a rocking time. One cannot but help wonder how this Bengali Belle made the relatively alien place her home and built such a huge fan following.

MEGA ZERO He is called mega star in the celluloid world. But as far as politics is concerned he is reduced to a Big Zero. That’s Chiranjeevi who floated Praja Rajyam Party with social justice as its plank and of course to pip the ruling Congress at the hustings. The hero turned a ‘villain’ in politics and left his party MLAs in the lurch by merging the party with Congress that offered him a plum post and perhaps some other perks too. Now as the Congress party is sailing through a rough weather, he is nowhere to go. It is also not sure that whether his fans will accept this ‘Kotalarayudu’ who went to become ‘Mahanagaram lo Mayagadu.’ Looks like he will soon join his ilk like Dasari Narayana Rao and Rebel Star Krishnam Raju who remained also -ran in politricks.

SIX-PACK SUDHEER He has won the hearts of Telugu audience in his first film SMS itself. Made with a shoe-string budget, his second film Premakatha Chitram ran into packed houses and earned him many accolades. Son-in-law of Super Star Krishna, Sudheer Babu has come a long way in the Telugu Tinsel Town. Since it is a fad with the new generation heroes, this former badminton player too hit the gym that bore him a ‘basketful’ of fruit. He now is the proud ‘owner’ of a six if not eight pack body like his seniors Allu Arjun, Ram Charan Tej and Rana Daggubati. Though he is not a perfect match to them the upcoming hero has his own following. His fans are eagerly waiting to see his chiseled body in his forthcoming flick Aadu Magadra Bujji. There was a time when his detractors tore him to pieces saying that he had nothing to write home about except his royal ties with Prince Mahesh and Andhra James Bond Krishna. Besides proving them wrong by building a body never seen before in Tollywood, he also left Mahesh himself jaw-dropping. SHRAVAN, A NATURAL SUCCESS Creativity needs an imaginative brain and a strong will to turn imagination into reality. Shravan proves it effortlessly. Looking for a perfect attire for wedding or fashion event, with an assurance of absolute exclusivity? Then go to him. This is what the affluent Hyderabadis do. Shravan has become synonymous with pure fashion in town. He is the only designer who doesn’t import fabrics, but procures the pure natural material like khaadi and jute directly from the weavers to make his unique creations. With such specialization, he has obviously become the top choice to design fineries for high profile weddings. Right now he is working on almost 100 such projects. Despite his busy schedule at home, he manages to take part in the shows abroad, designing costumes for many a showstopper. Unlike many of his ilk, he is blessed with a gift of gab and sophisticated communication skills and can instantly put his clients at ease and in comfort.

PROGRESS UNLIMITED Born in Hyderabad, today it has grown global, completed 50 years, and earned accolades and honours. The first name to come to mind spontaneously is Pragati Offset Pvt. Ltd. when one has to go for printing paperboard cartons, blister packs, brochures, booklets or high profile wedding cards. Such is the name the firm, to be specific the man behind it, CEO Mr. Narendra Paruchuri attained. He is invincible in this industry! Winning the best Asian Printer of the world and the coveted Elephant award is no joke! It takes endless toil to keep up the quality to be at the top! Following an overwhelming response he has been receiving from world over he plans to open some more printing units in other states too, say sources.

SANTHI TO EXPAND REACH Shopping in exhibitions looks like the latest passion of Hyderabadis and the big names involved in such exhibitions, leave no stone unturned to feel the pulse of the customers and cash in on it! Santhi is a name in the list of such expert players. Her exhibitions have the best of her collection and attract the cream crowd. After creating ripples in the capital city, she has set her eyes on Vizag. The response she has received from the city during her two earlier stints has made her take a serious look at this new destination. She is going to make her show a monthly affair. Santhi’s move seems to have opened new trend among her peers who are now awake to the new prospects.

A CLICK TO FAME He started off his career as a junior artiste in movie industry. With his hard work and dedication, within no time he has created a niche for himself. Not known to many, it is Venky whom the world today knows as a celebrated photographer, especially the film industry. He has become the most sought after celebrity photographer in recent times. His fame has even transcended the national border, and his photography workshops have earned him a lot of fan following abroad too, especially in the US. Venky has also added wedding photography to his business kitty. His FB page, which was created recently and with over two lakh likes, vouches for his growing fame. Bravo Venky! Click it up!

SPREADING AANCHAL “She can’t go a long way!” “It won’t click!” “Just not possible!”- these were the few statements, which are now replaced with “How could she do it?” “Wow, she is superb!” Yes it’s for none other than Aanchal, the most talked about woman in town, about whom there were many apprehensions when she came up with her boutique Aanchal! She has proven all of them wrong. In a couple of months her boutique has become the hot favourite spot and the fashionistas are going gaga over the assortment of her collection. It is the uniqueness of her selection that earns her the eyeballs. She handpicks them. It is said she is going to come up with some more outlets. Fortune favours the brave, isn’t it true?

MESMERIZING MADHURIMA In today’s market, what looks good sells good! Talent too is equally crucial! Take the case of Madhurima Banerjee! The pretty damsel’s beauty is unquestionable; she has also established the fact beyond doubt that in acting skills she doesn’t lag behind. All her films fell like nine pins despite having big banners and ace leading men and super cast. Producers were wary of casting this jinxed actress. It is only natural that not many offers were coming her way, but it doesn’t mean she is doomed. Instead of lamenting over the spilt milk, she has chosen to fight it back. She is busy with photo shoots, which have created a rage among her fans. Smitten by her oomph, her social networking page is flooded with compliments. Even her detractors couldn’t help praising her and her talent.

DISCO SHANTI IN RACE? When the late actor Sri Hari joined Congress Party it was felt that he would be a formidable rival to YSRCP. Now with his sad demise, his wife may be roped into the Congress fold to contest from Kukatpally constituency. Like her late husband, Shanti too has a clean image. What is interesting is that Jayaprakash Narayan who is representing Kukatapally in the Assembly is also known for his scruples and as a paragon of virtues. It is rumoured that the former IAS officer may not contest this time on compassionate grounds to facilitate Shanti an easy win in the ensuing elections. People now wait to see if JP will really do that. If he does so this Good Samaritan gesture will stand in good stead for him, if he chooses to contest from elsewhere. However, right now all the major parties are trying to rope her in as she will certainly come riding on a huge sympathy wave.

LEGACY Srinadh traces the history. “My grandfather KVR Choudhary was a young ambitious person and leaving the agricultural field, he joined transport business (which was a rage at that time) at the behest of some good friends who were experts in the trade in Kakinada. With his aggressive approach and out-of-the-box thinking, he redefined the transport trade and founded Shri Ramdas Motor Transport (SRMT). In 1963, he established yet another transport company Gopal, which was plying buses between Kakinada and Vizag initially. It was the time when international tractor companies in association with Mahindra, were penetrating into the Indian market with tractors. Following the market mood, Mr. Choudhary, who had been already dealing with heavy vehicles through SRMT, shifted his attention to tractors through Gopal with considerable ease. Figuring in the top 20 list of tractor dealers was no big task for him. Srinadh’s father Mr. Ravindra entered the scene in 1969 joining Gopal. However, he had shifted to the sister concern Bhavani Casting. Gopal was the first and foremost company to be appointed as a dealer to market the mopeds that were being manufactured in Tirupati. By and by they had gained grip over the market and started marketing brands like Kinetic, Bajaj tempos etc. In 1995 Mr. Ravindra rejoined Gopal.

ENTRY AND CONTRIBUTION Though born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Srinadh never took things for granted. He realized the value of labour and respected it. Even as he was pursuing studies abroad, he took up many part time assignments purely to learn it hard way and gain experience as he was in no hurry to join the family business. However, he was compelled to alter his plans as his father and experienced staff took to politics, got busy with elections and successfully represented Rajahmundry constituency as a MP & MLA. Currently board member of TTD could not devote enough time to business. As his natural successor Srinadh, who by then obtained an MBA degree, entered business in 1999. “I was in a piquant situation. On one hand I entered a business that was well-established and had been running for years. On the other, I was left alone to fend for myself with no mentor or guide. It took me one and half years to find my bearings in this arena,” says Srinadh. The work experience he gained in various fields helped him look at issues from different perspectives. He also realized that there were occasions when his views were not in accordance with that of his father, leading to debates. He felt that dealing with automobiles related to agriculture was more lucrative and long lasting compared to trading personal vehicles that were

bought on people’s whims and fancies. Srinadh chucked out all the non-profit units like Bajaj tempos, Kinetic, paints, radiators, generators etc. and added TVS, lubricants etc. The steps he had taken to align the system into a profitmaking venture benefitted the company to a large extent. VISION When he joined the business, it was a Rs. 14 cr company. Now it has a whopping Rs.100 cr turnover. Srinadh has set a target of Rs. 200 cr growth for his business that includes corporate farming, construction and automobiles and is striving to achieve it in three to four years. INSPIRATION When one has a successful grandfather and father; comparisons and expectations are inevitable. “I haven’t reached up to their level and stature. I do push myself,” shares a humble Srinadh. Ruling out any long term plans and unrealistic goals, he evolves his own strategies. Taking one step at a time, he moves on to the next level. MOTTO Whatever we do, we must do well and try to be the number one. SUCCESS MANTRA “An individual alone can never bring a difference, as success is always the product of team work. I can plan things, but I need a team to execute them effectively,” says he. Considering himself fortunate to have a supportive brother Kalyan Prasad

and an efficient team, he reiterates that it was only through their cooperation Gopal could reach this level. Since it has an efficient team, the company doesn’t require his presence 24X7. USP “Our goodwill and credibility built over the past four decades.” RISK-TAKER OR A SAFE-PLAYER? It’s purely situational. If the goal is crucial, he doesn’t mind taking a risk. OFF-THE WORK Watching a movie or visiting parents is his best stress buster. At times he likes to shut himself off from everything. He simply switches off the cell phone and does random things like watching TV. A dedicated dad, he loves to play with his sons. Akarsh, his elder son, is studying in a boarding school in Hyderabad and the younger one Ashish keeps him on his toes. FUTURE PLAN They have been into a few major arenas like civil construction for the past five years and have projects in tie-up with L&T and Chettinadu Cement, some of them outside the state. Srinadh wishes to go back to his roots and plans large-scale farming in another year. ADVICE TO FRESHERS Do a thorough groundwork before venturing into any field. Do not go for something which doesn’t excite you. Pursuing something that is not of your liking turns out to be a drudgery and tough task. red | november 2013 | 77

assion-driven-profession can yield groundbreaking records - this is what he has established effortlessly. He has also pioneered the trend of screening the new and big releases. The events have all the works of a premier show except for the participation of the actors themselves. Now he has crossed the 100-screening-mark. He has also changed the face of festival celebrations in the city. Be it a Holi bash or a Diwali Dhamaka or Id or Christmas, New Year Party, he embellishes them with music, feast and unlimited fun and of course without giving a go-by to the age-old traditions. His entry into the world of couture with the event Fashion Runway is the latest addition to his versatile profile. It is only natural this young jovial man earned the sobriquets Premier King and Bisket. Ranita Ray ropes in Srikanth Soma and records his inspiring story as he narrates it.

red | november 2013 | 82

BACKGROUND After obtaining B.Com and MBA degrees, Srikanth went for a food technology course at CFTRI in Mysore. It was an obvious choice for him as he hails from a family which is into biscuit manufacturing for the past 30 years in Hyderabad, the Capital City for biscuit industries in India. Responding to the needs of the people and demands of the market, his father Mr. Soma Suresh Kumar established a biscuit manufacturing unit in 1983 under the brand name Biking Food Products Pvt. Ltd., which grew bigger and better over the years, manufacturing a variety of biscuits under the brand name ‘KING’. The add-on brand ‘SUMO’ biscuits too gained popularity within a short span. Biking Foods name spread far and wide as it also makes biscuits for Parle company; with such a strong base and backing, it was a mere cakewalk for Srikanth to start his professional life. However, creating his own label stepping out of his father’s shadow was always on his mind. So he took a diversion after working in his family business till 2007. A casual visit to the charity show on friend’s invitation spurred him to enter the entertainment industry and he organized the first ever movie screening. Since then there is no looking back.

biscuit, as one has to break it to consume it. This change proved luckier for him. SUCCESS MANTRA ‘Joy shared is joy doubled’ is the maxim Bisket follows religiously. He is a happy man. Stating that his happiness is highly contagious and that is what attracts people to his events, he advocates “be good to people and success inevitably follows you.” IMPORTANCE OF PR Good name and strong networking are very important. You may be rich but if you lack PR skills and fail to reach people, you go unnoticed.

WE CONNECT The concept was suggested by his friend from Melbourne. Explaining the purpose behind ‘We Connect’ he says, “Today we got to know about the different events and happenings in town within no time, but when it comes to get our spotted pictures, it takes a couple of days in a newspaper and if it is in a magazine one needs to wait for a month. Somehow it kills the excitement. We Connect pitches in here with instant photo service. We cover premium events and our team of photographers uploads the pictures instantly. The guests who are connected with our page get to see their pictures within an hour. This has fetched us over 10,000 likes in just five months on FB.

SECRET OF SCREENING The unique concept of free screening along with return gifts, it was bound to catch up. Though it all started for the sake of fun, the response he got in return had grown so large that today on every big release he receives requests from people to organize screening. It won’t be wrong to say that in recent years, Bisket Movie Screening has become a red carpet event. People feel privileged to get an invitation to it. With major business tycoons as his sponsoring associates, he has given a platform for such traders who want to create their brands and get noticed instantly. BISKET - THE NAME AND ITS USP “No one knows me by my original name Srikanth Soma, but identify me as Bisket. It’s a brand today,” says Srikanth. His dad’s business gave him the alias Biscuit and his friend and astrologer Raja Reddy suggested the spelling Bisket. It incidentally negated the feel of a break associated with red | november 2013 | 83

PHILANTHROPY Strongly believing in giving back to society, Bisket participates in philanthropic activities whenever he gets an opportunity. One such event which is close to his heart was ‘Satya Meva Jayate’ which he organized at Taj Banjara. This daylong event treated 2,000 blind children to entertainment, delicious spreads and return gifts. It could bring immense happiness on those innocent faces; and nothing could have been more rewarding than this, he says. DREAM He aspires to be at once a successful businessman like his dad and an entertainment guy. He wants to reach his Bisket Entertainment to Vizag, Mumbai, Bangalore, besides getting into movie production. A LEAF OUT OF HIS DIARY 7.00 am - Wake up 7.15 am - 8.15 am - Yoga session 8.30 am - Breakfast, reading newspaper 9.30 am - Leave for work Lunch at office and it has to be nothing but pure homemade food prepared by my wife. 7.30 pm - Back from work. If I leave little early I work out at the clubhouse 8.30 pm - Dinner Quite often we go for a small drive or ice cream treat post dinner. 10.00 pm - Watch TV for sometime WEEKENDS Saturday is my favourite day as I can relax the most. I work purely from home and evenings are for partying. It is always lazy Sundays. From breakfast to dinner we eat out and window shop or catch up with friends or family.

BOLLYWOOD MASALA BAREDEVIL LEONE It may look strange. But Sunny Leone, who made headlines for her ‘baredevilry’ in porn films, refused to go topless for a scene in her forthcoming horror flick. The shot demanded the actress to cover her bare boobs with her hands. But Sunny insisted that she be allowed to wear a bikini top. The makers, however, yielded to her urge/demand and she was allowed to shoot wearing a top. It was later removed using computer graphics and her ‘assets’ were then digitally superimposed from one of her earlier films much to the delight of voyeurs.

IRKED MALLIKA STALLS SHOOT A cuss word hurled against actress Mallika Sherwat by one of the contestants made her stop the shoot of her show ‘The Bachelorette India, Mere Khaylaon Ki Mallika’ for three days. In what was supposed to be the gathering of affable suitors on the sets of the dating reality show, the contestants had a verbal duel over difference of opinion on the actress. A contestant cast aspersions on Mallika reducing her to tears, even as celebrity guest Mahesh Bhatt was watching on. Upset over the incident Mallika left the shoot and refused to shoot for the show. She relented only when the top bosses of the production house convinced her. The show is a spin-off from the American competitive reality dating game show.

REIGNING T RANA REIGNING RAVISHING REIGNING RANA RICHA RANA RAVISHING he scion of Daggubati Family, Rana proved his mettle in his debut film Leader itself. The film fetched him Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut - South. Though one or two films failed to shake the cash registers at the BO, the towering hunk created a niche for himself in the tinsel world. Two movies Rudhramadevi and Bahubali will keep Rana on his toes till 2015. His beefed up body, toned muscles and broad shoulders, screamed only one thing Bahubali. He takes time out of his busy schedules to talk to us about the movie and others.

REIGNINGREIGNING RANA RANA RAVISHING RAVISHING RICHA RICHA

currently under production is a bilingual in Telugu and Tamil, directed by Hanu Raghavapudi of Andala Rakshasi fame. This will be my first film produced under the Suresh Productions banner. There are a couple of more films underway with ace directors like Selvaraghavan and Mani Shankar. You will be seeing me in a new avatar soon. Why are you fastidious about action movies? You have not done a romantic film for a long time. Well, based on the physicality that I have action films are the first that come my way. And also I have been inclined towards them while growing up. But, I would love to do any kind of role that’s offered to me.

Every actor has a USP. What is Rana’s USP? My USP is that I have no USP. I don’t like to be slotted into any particular image. A few years ago, I met Kamal Haasan garu in Chennai while he was dubbing for Dasavatharam and we happened to speak for a while. I still remember what he told me then. “The moment you feel that you cannot mould or adapt yourself to a particular character because of an image or inability, it’s time to stop acting.” So, I will always do my best to change myself completely to suit the character I play. I don’t like to be seen as ‘Rana’ in a film. I would like to be remembered for the character.

REIGNINGRICHA RAVISHING RANA RICHA EXCERPTS RAVISHING RICHA REIGNING What is your role in Bahubali? I play the negative lead in the SSR magnum opus 2-part war film. It’s essentially a tale of 2 brothers fighting for a kingdom. So that’s Prabhas and myself. A first of it’s kind for the auditorium and me.

It is heard that you made Mumbai your second home? Yes. Now that I have an official place to stay in Mumbai, I don’t have to live out of suitcase anymore. Also, this will help me dedicate quality time in Mumbai and focus on my ongoing and future Hindi projects.

So it’s Rana the actor and not Rana the star! (Smiles). Yes. I have some favourite genres and I have been trying to make one film in each of them. ‘Leader’ was a political drama. ‘Department’ was a cop thriller. ‘Naa Ishtam’ was a romantic comedy. And my characters in those films were not even remotely similar to each other. I will continue to challenge myself as an actor.

EIGNINGRANA RANARAVISHING VISHINGRICHA RICHA How is it working with Rajamouli? It has been a great experience. Prabhas, Anushka and Rajamouli have become an extended family as we have been living together on the sets for several months now.

It seems you sustained injuries while rehearsing for the movie. We were undergoing training in sword fighting and horse riding for the film. It was a minor accident during the training and I suffered a few injuries. Injuries have become a part and parcel of my work now.

You have a reputation for having a sound understanding of the dynamics of movie production. What is your vision for Suresh Productions 10-15 years down the line? I want to make Suresh Productions the No.1 movie production house in the country and I would want it to make movies in all languages. My grandfather Ramanaidu garu did it earlier, but somewhere along the line we stopped doing it. We should do it again.

FAVORITES REIGNING Food: Hyderabad Haleem and Biryani RANA On sets: Grilled Chicken or Baked RAVISHING Fish with Caesar Salad RICHA Non-food passions: Fitness - I hit the gym twice a day

REIGNING RANA RAVISHING REIGNING RICHA RANA

REIGNING RANA RAVISHING RICHA How is the film progressing? Sometimes the shoot was marathon. Certain days the team even shoots nonstop till early morning. Although the shoot starts at 7 am and packs up typically around 9 pm, sometimes the workshops, training, sword fighting, horse riding, gymming, etc. keep us occupied way past midnight. In fact, it looks like it may continue like this till we finish the entire shooting. What are your other projects? Rudramadevi - Gunasekhar’s prestigious historic 3D movie is another exciting film I am proud to be working on. Another film

Music: Rock/Pop/AR Rahman Attire: Shorts and T-shirt

What are your other interests apart from cinema? I am a very heavy reader and it is my favourite pastime. Mahabharatha interests me a lot and I have read several versions of it so far.

Your take on red. Vizag No.1 entertainment Magazine

Will you want to be associated with politics? Cinema is something I understand and politics is something I don’t. Yet, I tried putting across a dream through acting, which is what I can relate to most.

How does it feel to be on the cover page of red for the second time? It is a great feeling. I first appeared when it was published from Vizag. This time the magazine is being published from Hyderabad too.

You come from a family of actors and producers, has that been an influence in your decision to act? There is definitely a little more of an edge that I get from the family that I come from. So it has been a great influence in many ways. It’s like being in film school from when you’re in class 1. So I understand films in and out.

A message to your fans Thank you very much for the love you showered on me all these days.

Later she moved to Mumbai where she had joined a course in Public Health and Nutrition. Since Bengalis are fond of performing arts, she too is no exception. She participated in theatre during her school time and got trained in Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares, a school for actors. Apart from that she had done numerous modelling assignments and commercials like Dabur Vatika, Peter England People, Medimix. Besides being active in fashion scene, she walked on ramps.

other films after Bhai in which I acted with Nagarjuna Sir this year, even though I have been getting many offers. I do not want to take up any projects that I cannot complete.

Are you choosy in selecting roles? I make sure that every film and every role I do is very different from the other so that I can prove my mettle and talent, without just being a looker. I have been selective and done quality roles so far, instead of focusing on the quantity.

It is heard that you are taking a break from acting? Yes! It is true. I want to complete my studies and even pursue higher studies in the US. I am not quitting films. I am just pausing and prioritizing academics at this juncture in my life.

REIGNINGRICHA RAVISHING FAVORITES RANA RICHA RAVISHING RICHA REIGNING You worked with both the young guns of Kollywood - Dhanush (Mayakkam Enna) and Simbu (OsthI). Are they different in nature? Of course, they are! Everybody knows that. But doing films with them was a great experience. Though they are different personality-wise, they’re so ‘musically’oriented and artistically talented.

EIGNINGRANA RANARAVISHING VISHINGRICHA RICHA EXCERPTS

Why did the sudden switch to acting when you were basking in the glory of Miss India US Crown besides being a model? There is no hard and fast rule that people who start on one path should stick to the same till the end. One can try their hands at many things that complement one another or even try something different.

Looks like you are forced to speak very less dialogues when it comes to Tamil movies. Any specific reason? Some roles require expressions through eyes. Those who had already seen Dabangg knew what was my role to be in Osthi. It was about a simple but independent village belle who was caught up in her own world yet mysterious when it came to romance. In Mayakkam Enna, my character had to undergo a lot of internal struggles and the expressions were best seen through the eyes and body language rather than an overdose of dialogues which wouldn’t have had the same impact.

When I met the assistant director of Leader, he recommended my name to Sekhar Kammula. I had my audition in Hyderabad and I got selected. The offer was a birthday (March 20) gift for me. Tell us about Sekhar Kammula He is honest, sincere and humble. He has a great penchant for art and cinema. I saw his Happy Days for seven times. Since he gives a lot of importance to heroines in his movies, I am proud to be called his invention and honoured to be a part of his movie.

How was your experience with Prabhas in Mirchi? It was well. He is a very down-to-earth, laid back person who has no airs and is very carefree. He is one of the few tall heroes in the industry who can match my physical height and our team earns a lot of accolades.

MW 4 series convertible has arrived. The topless 4-Series boasts 13 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up and 7.8 with the top down. Longer, lower and wider than the outgoing 3-Series, the 4-Series Convertible is identical to the recently introduced 4-Series coupe from the rocker panels up to the belt line. Besides, it also gains a three-piece retractable hard top that electronically opens or closes in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 11 mph. The hard top provides a quieter ride and better all-weather insulation than a fabric top while giving the 4-Series a coupe-like silhouette when closed.

Doc

By Ranita Ray

“No time to go home to change, hence I got my dresses here itself. Give me a minute,” said she, as she wriggled out of the doctor’s coat and set down the shoulder bag. She snatches the intermittent time between two surgeries to be with us and she looks as relaxed and fresh as if she was between two pastime pursuits. Only a person who loves her profession passionately could be so cool and composed while at work. Tall, slim, simple and with a hearty smile that never leaves her face, she comes across as one of those rare doctors who can heal patients even before the actual treatment starts. We catch Dr. Merle Fernandes, Director, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Visakhapatnam and Consultant, Cornea and Anterior Segment Services on the scenic hospital campus adorned with beautiful trees, flowers and greenery and engage her in an interesting conversation.

red | november 2013 | 98

PASSION AND PERCEPTION Surprisingly, neither of her parents is a doctor. Voracious reader as she has been right from the childhood, Merle developed interest in medical profession, drawing inspiration from a story of a neurosurgeon she read in Reader’s Digest. She was nursing the dream of becoming a surgeon right from the age of ten. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, where she spent 14 years, she moved to Goa with her parents as that country offered very little scope for higher education. A rank student throughout, she obtained a degree in medicine, scoring the highest marks in ophthalmology. In 2000, she earned a fellowship in cornea surgery and got trained in LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. After working there for three years, she moved back to Goa and joined Apollo Hospitals, where she set up the ophthalmology department. However, serving in the hospital could not satiate Merle’s extensive intellectual needs. She returned to LVP and soon she was posted at Vizag as HOD of Cornea of the new hospital that was taking shape. She, along with three colleagues, developed the hospital stage by stage to be fully operational and justifiably heads it now. HURDLES “While we had nothing to fret over in the Hyderabad institute as it has been running for the past 25 years, we had faced quite a few hiccups here before we could really settle down to receive the patients. However, it’s part and parcel of the game,” says a non-complaining Merle. Though a non-local, the spirited doctor doesn’t find even the local language an obstacle to reach her patients. Of course, it could at times lead to hilarious situations, says Merle, recalling a funny incident. “Thinking that my Telugu was good enough to be put to use, I once started talking to a patient in the language. Even as I concluded, the puzzled patient said, “Naaku English raadu”. Of course, since then I came a long way and I can get across to the locals without any problem,” beams Merle. INSPIRATION LVP was the brainchild of Dr. Gullapalli Nageswar Rao, who returned home from the US to set up this leading eye hospital in 1986. He also happens to be the Chairman of the board. The institute draws its name from the movie moghul Mr. LV Prasad, who donated Rs.1 cr. and land for the main campus.

But the principles, facilities and services are conceived by Dr. Rao. Merle says she need not look beyond him for motivation. He is her mentor and inspiration too. STRONG SUPPORT Being single, her personal world is very small and cozy. Her parents, Mr. Sylvano Fernandes and Mrs. Angela Fernandes, teachers by profession, have always been her pillars of support. TREASURED MOMENT In her professional journey till now there are many instances that gave her immense satisfaction and sense

of fulfillment. However, she specifically mentions the first paediatric surgery she performed in Vizag. It was the case of a fourmonth-old boy with opacity due to white spots in both the eyes. It required cornea transplantation. The LVP eye bank did not have stock and the worried parent rushed to Hyderabad for the surgery. “Luckily we could procure a pair of cornea tissue here and recalled the patient. I transplanted it in both the eyes, performing surgeries. He is now six years old and can see this beautiful world. This school-going boy is a bundle of mischief. Can anything be more rewarding and gratifying than this?” asks Merle.

“For a woman who wants to pursue her career, the challenges are manifold. She can meet them only if she draws a distinct line between her personal life and profession.

ADVICE For women it is important to work twice as hard as men because it is only then they are taken seriously. They have to constantly prove themselves, negating the general perception that women lack professionalism. There is a misconception that their commitment to the family precedes everything else. SAY ON EYE DONATION Merle who also holds the post of Director of eye bank of LVPV, laments that there is minimal awareness of eye donation in India despite the fact that there is a huge demand for corneal transplant. We do have a number of eye banks, but many of them don’t function to the optimum. People here have to understand the eye or cornea donation of their deceased family member, doesn’t mean that the whole eye ball is taken out. It is only a part of the eye which is being used for transplantation. People have to be sensitized to this issue and we should make them realize the significance of such a gesture. There can be no nobler deed than giving sight to a fellow human. DREAM As the head of the organization, she wants to see this branch outshine the Hyderabad one. At personal level, she likes to be recognized as one of the top cornea surgeons nationally and internationally. OFF THE JOB The regular working hours are nothing less than 14-16 hrs. a day. But whenever she finds some time, she loves to read and her interest lies particularly in fiction. If her schedules are a little more generous, she goes for swimming or watches movies. BUCKET LIST With a spark in her eyes, she rattles out a number of wishes - world tours, charity work, white water rafting, bungee jumping etc.

T h o u g h t s 

The beauty of my profession is giving vision to those groping in dark.

It is important for all of us to develop a strong sense of integrity. Today, the whole country is under the grip of corruption. No matter what the situation is, one should not succumb to corrupt ways. This practice should start right from the individual level.

The medical scenario is totally lopsided. While the cities are booming with state-of-the art facilities, the rural areas don’t even have enough number of doctors. It has to change. The government must set right this faulty system.

Anyone, whether it is a man or woman, can dream high. red | november 2013 | 101

ow many of us dare to chase our dreams? And if it is in an alien land, perhaps only a handful dare to hold on to their guns! She is one such lady; which Hyderabad today reckons as a celebrated woman icon. Despite the lingual and cultural unfamiliarity, she not only braved every challenge that came her way, but also helped Hyderabadis fine-tune their tastes of fashion. She is certainly the trendsetter of highend exhibitions in the city. It was undeniably educating and motivating for Ranita Ray to meet Ms. Kamini Saraf whom she presents here with a particular focus on her decade-old unique Fashion Yatra.

FOUNDATION Though she was born in an influential business family of Dhanbad that runs Indiana Ghee and Hindusthan Malleables & Forgings Ltd., she did not have many opportunities except education. Her only contact with the outside world was during vacations when the family went to places like Kolkata and Delhi or abroad. The family was into intellectual pursuits besides its business activities. A glaring example of it was her grandfather, Prahallad Ray Ji Jalan, who had studied engineering way back in 1940 in Bishop Cotton, Kolkata, which was open only for Britishers.

Attributing her intellectual genes to him, she says it was he who inculcated reading habit in her. His frequent tours to countries like Germany from where their industries used to import machines, gave him quite a modern outlook. He ensured that the women of Jalan family are well educated and utilized their knowledge, are not confined to four walls of the house. ACCOUNTS AND FASHION Little Kamini was never into dolls or girly things and was fascinated by her father and uncles who were managing factories. Hence her leisure hours were always reserved for visits to factories and she used to dream of running such

industries all by herself someday. She had inherited accounting and drafting skills from her father, Mr. Prem Kumar Jalan and was often referred to as ‘the accountant’ by her friends. It was from her mom she had her lessons in fashion. Hailing from the famous Daalmia family of Kolkata, her mother Manjula Jalan, had complete exposure to high-end fashions and brands. Known for her mastery in transforming simple things into extraordinarily creative pieces or arrangements, Kamini gives credit to her mother for passing down her excellent designing skills. This is pretty much evident in her aesthetically acclaimed home décor.

FORAYING INTO FASHION Kamini enrolled herself in the fashion school after earning B.Com degree. But her marriage and the resultant shift to Hyderabad came in the way of her studies. She felt that Kolkata was the city of designs and creativity and much more advanced and cost effective than Hyderabad which was not so fashionably evolved during that time. To keep herself connected to the world of trends, she started importing designer women wear from Kolkata and kept holding small exhibitions at home. In 1997, she took over one of the biggest boutiques in Hyderabad and ran it successfully for two years. EMBARKING ON YATRA Kamini had to give up her boutique and wait for a couple of years for things to settle down as her son met with an accident and she had to meet some family commitments. She renewed her stint with fashion in 2001 holding the first upmarket exhibition with a solo designer from Kolkata and went on to add two more in the subsequent year. In 2003 not only the number of designers increased, but also there was a rise in the variety of products like jewellery, bags, shoes and accessories. In Dec 2004, she held a mega event – Yatra – with 30 stalls flaunting the biggies like Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani. Despite its being acclaimed as a fantastic show, it did not go well with Hyderabadis and Kamini incurred substantial loss. Stating that the city wasn’t ready for such high prices, Kamini insists, “Even today such collection is beyond the reach of most of the visitors.” She got due recognition in 2005 when she went international and people started urging her to organize such exhibitions. However, in 2006 when the travel site ‘Yatra.com’ was born she got a legal notice as the name was already patented. She renamed it as ‘Fashion Yatra’ (FY) and got it patented.

accept a lady boss as they did not know that she holds a degree in accounting. BOON OF BENEVOLENCE The spirit of philanthropy comes naturally to Kamini as she belongs to a cultured family. Being Arya Samaji, she is involved in a lot of social work and advocates liberal thoughts. Strongly believing in the maxim that charity should begin at home, Jalans take good care of their domestic helps and their families. Kamini continues the family tradition. However, her philanthropy doesn’t end here as she champions the cause of girl child. Under the ‘Nanhi Kali’ programme, she funds the education of 100 children, taking a considerable chunk out of her exhibition profits. Till date 2,500 girls were benefitted. CHERISHED MOMENT Once when she went for shopping at Charminar, a group of young women surrounded her. Before she got into a panic they told her that they were the beneficiaries of her largesse and wanted to thank her. PRESENT SCENARIO Fashion should always be a style which suits a person. Unfortunately people blindly follow the contemporary trends without thinking if they really suit their age, looks or figure. Fashion should be an individual’s distinct statement that instantly conjures up the person’s image. When you are a certain somebody, you should have a certain recall value; like Maharani Gayatri Devi reminds us of pearls and elegance. One can look fashionable in a Khaadi sari or a rugged jeans and a T-shirt too. Trailblazer Kamini remained unbeatable over the past decade in holding the event of this magnitude. It has already travelled six cities and come March and Fashion Yatra will go to Dubai and Singapore. DECODING THE FY Providing a platform in Hyderabad appealed to Kamini as it is beneficial to both customers and designers. While the buyers get the product for half the price, the designers get paid on the spot. By eliminating the middlemen’s commission the product can be given at a reasonable cost. Race Kamini sets her own parameters and refuses to compare herself with others, however mighty they are. “I am fiercely independent and never bask in the glory of my parents and grandparents, though they are my guiding stars. I follow only one principle – lend your ear to everyone, but do what you feel right. I may be inspired but never influenced by others,” she adds. ‘W’ Factor Stressing that she never faced any discrimination, she says, “Even Hyderabad had never given me any trouble.” However, she admits her experience with her husband’s steel factory (She took care of the accounts for a year) was not too great as the staff found it hard to

TAKE ON DESIGNERS Today most of them are replicators, not designers. There are only a few in India who actually create. Every designer should have his/her own signature style, quality and aesthetics. Her exhibitions don’t encourage replicators or shop owners and provide a platform only to budding and genuine designers, besides the established ones. FUTURE She wants to take her exhibitions to more cities. She also has plans to open a Media and PR company and take up branding. She also nurses the dream to own and design a boutique of her own. It will not be something cliché, but a place which will be a signature or a stamp of Hyderabad; a must visit place for fashion aficionados all over the world. BUCKET LIST A dedicated mom, she wants her son to be a good human being. Loss of her brother three years ago made her realize that money and rat race don’t really mean anything. Thus, she wishes to settle her brother’s family and help as many as people as possible. She wants to see the world; from her childhood she has a list of must see places. “I have a chakri on my feet,” says Kamini, thus she keeps travelling.

My father, the late Mr. Ranganayakulu and mother Mrs. Parvatha Vardhanamma gave me complete freedom to choose my own path. Not too keen on pursuing education after obtaining B.Com degree, I joined my father in his construction business. In 1994, I shifted to Visakhapatnam, seeking greener pastures and the shift really augured well for me and my business. Though I set off with building office spaces for HPCL, I developed a passionate love for building apartments. I have carved a special niche for myself, meeting the growing and varied demands of home-makers.

This business runs purely on reputation. This I earned purely through hard work and honesty. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER HOME BUILDERS? Our aesthetic designs focus on common spaces, unique elevations and worry-free processes. We also draw rave reviews for our fine craftsmanship and eye for detail. I am ready to sacrifice a foot here or a square there which may result in a bit of financial loss to provide the much needed relief that make the building look regal and grand. WHAT ABOUT HURDLES? Hurdles are an inevitable part of the game. What matters is how we tackle them. I meticulously plan my projects foreseeing the possible impediments.

WHAT ARE YOUR VENTURES? Though my mainstay is building apartments, I recently forayed into farmhouse and residential layouts that meet the international parameters. Developing a wide range of alternative living spaces, MVV offers economic and ergonomic designs for the benefit of upper middle class and upper class clientele. Of course, we also have cost-effective facilities, meeting the middle class demands too. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? Building apartments can be a tough and stressful task but one look at all those happy families in our homes makes my day.

E x c e r p t s WHAT ARE THE CHANGES YOU HAVE NOTED IN THE INDUSTRY OVER THE YEARS? There is a perceptible rise in the standards of designs, material and methods. People now are in the know of modern amenities, have more spending power and can spell out what they exactly want. The new technologies and products flooding the market have added many more dimensions to our task. It is growing tougher and challenging by the day and certainly more gratifying. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THE NEW BUYER? Though there are many building companies, only a few of them can really deliver goods, that too on time. Don’t go for a builder just because he has promised you a unit for a lower rate. He may leave you high and dry. Check the veracity of the project before signing on the dotted lines. You must do your homework thoroughly because it is a solid life time investment. HOW FAR HAVE WE ADVANCED IN THIS FIELD IN COMPARISON WITH THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES? We are at least 50 years behind the developed nations as far as the building technology or methods are concerned. Highly mechanized activity in those countries makes the job much easier and simpler. We still struggle, depending heavily on man power. Obviously, problems become manifold when there is human involvement. I with dismay say that we are progressing at a snail’s pace. WHOM DO YOU BLAME FOR THE TARDY PROGRESS? This is not unique only to our sector. It can be seen in every aspect of our society. We cannot blame a single person or institution. The entire system needs to be revamped. I hold the self-seeking politicians responsible for this situation. Of course, it boils down to the bad choice people make while electing their representatives. OUR CITIES ARE TURNING INTO CONCRETE JUNGLES YOUR COMMENT This is where we must emulate Singapore and Hong Kong. They are able to keep their greenery intact, despite massive construction activity. HOW DO YOU SELL VIZAG? There is something for everyone here because of the diverse demands. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY? By building good quality homes and setting high standards in the world of construction. I intend to educate the deserving poor children and want to talk of it only when I take some concrete steps in that direction. WHAT ARE OTHER ACTIVITIES YOU ARE INVOLVED IN? I served as the Chairman of Visakhapatnam Apartment Builders Association (the present CREDAI). WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU? I cannot take one person’s name or one phenomenon that inspires me. I am basically very observant and take good from everything I witness and every experience I go through.

Snap Shots ANY MEMORABLE MOMENT? May be the day I make a movie ARE YOU MISCHIEVOUS? No. Never. But I do have fun with friends whenever we go abroad. WHAT KIND OF ADVENTURE SPORTS YOU LIKE? I like doing workouts in gym. I ride bikes and drive cars, of course only at prescribed speeds. DO YOU LIKE MUSIC? I enjoy music while driving the car. ARE YOU A FITNESS FREAK? Yes. I am always eager to show others that I am fit. I spend a lot of hours at the gym. ON WHAT THINGS DO YOU SPLURGE? Clothes, shoes, wrist watches, spectacles, cars et al. And of course on the bungalow that I am constructing at Lawson’s Bay Colony. WHERE DO YOU WISH TO SPEND YOUR VACATION? Abroad HOW DO YOU DEFINE LUXURY? Definition of luxury varies from person to person. For me it is having cars, living in air-conditioned house and travelling by air. HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ARE ANONYMOUS? I think I would feel comfortable.

WIFE’S SAY

Mrs.Naga Jyothi has been a quiet catalyst in Mr. Satyanarayana’s life, besides being his business partner. She says that she has no problem with her hubby being on a tight schedule, having little time for the family. “Being together itself is romantic and he gives us quality time and completely relies on me as far as running the house is concerned. I admire him for his devotion to his profession.

SON’S SAY

Describing MVV as a totally devoted father, Sharat, a 3rd year engineering student of GITAM, says, “We are buddies. What is unique about my father is that though he is a builder par excellence and built a huge business, he never pressurized me to toe his line. He gives me total freedom and asks me to choose my own path. It is quite a common practice that men in business generally keep their children chained to their family concerns. But my father tells me that I should not take this world for granted and I should step out and establish my own credentials and shape my future. Despite his extremely busy schedule he takes time out for my mom and me.”

STRIDE D

By Ranita Ray

uring the three decades of splendid service in healthcare, he touched millions of lives and has proved that miracles do happen and doctors are angels on the earth – yes, there is a lot to boast and brag. Yet he displays contradictory traits. Accolades and achievements seem to have only humbled him. It is an honour to profile Dr. Guru N. Reddy (MD, FACP, FACG, FASGE), Founder, Chairman and Managing Director, Continental Hospitals. A superb endoscopist, he has a number of achievements to his credit-member of boards of several hospitals, voted as Houston's Top Doctor consecutively from 2006 to 2012, the first Asian to serve as President of Harris County Medical Society (HCMS) and Houston Academy of Medicine. Investing his immeasurable expertise in the 700-bed tertiary care hospital, he is here to redefine healthcare and advocates integrity, transparency, collaborative approach and evidence-based medicine. red | november 2013 | 116

EXCERPTS EARLY LIFE Born in Hyderabad to a teacher couple Mr. Guru Dutta Reddy and the late Mrs. Damayanti, Dr. Reddy had the best of lessons right from the early childhood. His love for biological sciences made him pursue medicine at Osmania University. Later, he moved to US for post-graduation. TURNING POINT Refusing to believe that there could be any substitute for hard work, he has always taken the arduous path to his goals and rules out any shortcut to success. Obtaining postgraduation degree and super specializing in gastroenterology, liver diseases, transplant hepatology and nutrition at the Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, opened numerous doors of opportunities for Dr. Reddy, who also served as the clinical faculty in the same institution. “Marrying Vasu is the best of my accomplishments. It is nothing but a divine blessing to get such a supportive wife,” admits Dr. Reddy.

We should not let the sick and healthy mingle. So we have multiple entries and exits. All the rooms have access to air, ventilation and natural light, vital for quick recovery. The 8-foot corridor and wide hallways are equipped with infection control devices. This has tremendous bearing as they answer for 60% of the actual treatment. Even our rates are very competitive. “Good quality can cost less - is my mantra. If all the measures are taken to keep up the quality, it lowers the cost and the patient is the end beneficiary. We shall prove it.” MONEY-DRIVEN SYSTEM Certainly, it is an issue of concern. Like in any other profession, here too we have bad as well as good people. Now the use of correct technology is imperative to arrive at the right

diagnosis. The cost of healthcare is directly proportional to the technology tag. Intuitive medicine, in which the local doctor used to treat just noting the symptoms, is passé. It graduated to empiric medicine based on technically generated data. Now it is personalized or precision medicine with no presumption and experimentation. Diagnosing tools are plenty and practitioners have all the freedom to use them and this leads to either over use or misuse. I cannot say if it is intentional or due to lack of expertise. Absence of a regulatory body and stringent rules are the reason for this. Doctors should be more transparent. Medicine is a co-operative science, which has to be practised in collaboration, not in isolation. Chances of mistreatment become minimal when the experts of various branches come together.

INDIA CALLING Glorious career, innumerable accolades and honours could not stop him from returning home. Driven by a passion to pay back to his native land and concern for the existing medical system which he intends to set right to the best of his ability, Dr. Reddy came back. Describing setting up a hospital in India as the mother of challenges, he says, “My DNA is such that I can’t stay away from challenges. I feel fulfilled only if I can make a difference.” It took much sacrifice on the part of his family and his own as he had shuttled between the two continents for seven years to realize his dream. CONTINENTAL - WHY THE NAME? I chose it because it encompasses my life as a global citizen. Moreover, physician shouldn’t be biased over a creed or ethnicity. IS THE COLOSSAL CONTINENTAL COST-EFFECTIVE? The infrastructure of our healthcare industry doesn’t meet the international standards. In 1980s, when this industry was left to private players and the corporate hospitals started developing, they acquired either existing or makeshift buildings to run hospitals and most of them don’t meet the medical requirements. Continental, which looks colossal is scientifically designed, facilitating the segregation of patient population.

VASU (WIFE) I was raised in the US. His neighbour and my uncle were close friends and we met through them. We are married for 31 years. I do admire him for his hard work and discipline. I understand his passion for work. But he is a workaholic. This is something which I like to change.

PERSONAL LIGHTER ONES UNWINDING The moment I step into hospital I am on a relaxing mode. I keep joking even when I am at work. One can be responsible and also easygoing. Then even work doesn’t get tiring. Of course, there are days when I am driven to my wits’ end. Yet I do get away. Reading also loosens me up. I am a people’s person and love to talk to people from different walks of life. I miss driving in the US, that’s my major cultural adjustment in India. My gastronomic passion is trying new joints and a variety of ethnic food. Simple pleasures of life unwind me! MONEY, SUCCESS OR FAME Success tops the list. Failure is never an option. I work on and on till I succeed. Fame and money are byproducts. I champion the principle “put your profession first, money will chase you.” DEFINITION OF LUXURY It is a very relative thing. The general perception is something related to riches or spoilt riches. But I feel, it is something extra in life that makes life comfortable.

PREFERENCES FAVOURITES COLOUR: Light blue BRANDS: Not obsessed, but use them on the societal demand SHOES: Johnston & Murphy

HOLIDAYING We travel extensively. No hankering after fancy places. Even a placid lake would do. I want to see China and Egypt. Even we need to explore eastern India.

CLOTHES:

ARE YOU ROMANTIC? I started my life with Vasu with a date. Although it was an arranged marriage the decision was left to us. We dated for just 6 to 8 weeks and bonded for life. I am romantic though I hide my feelings, much to my wife’s displeasure. She feels I am kinder to other women. I must correct myself and should be more demonstrative to woo her.

WATCH:

REGRET Loss of my mother last year- I wish I was there with her to treat her! It haunts me till date.

MOVIE:

BIGGEST WISH I wish a day had 48 hours. In addition to my professional work, I could do a lot more. I want to pen a book, especially on the transition from US to India. STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS I am an easy-going and honest person with a strong sense of integrity. I am a stickler for perfection and expect the same from others, which could be painful to them. I do want to change, but at the same time I am scared of weakening myself in the process.

I used to quietly push the car out of the garage when my dad used to come home for lunch and drive it secretly.

REVA (SON)

ANJANA (DAUGHTER)

My dad has always been an open parent. We have lively conversations. He is encouraging and supportive though a bit strict at times as he has very high expectations from us. In a way it is good as it motivates me to do my best. Though he wanted at least one of us to get into medicine, he never imposed his wish on us. My elder brother chose business. Dad was a bit upset over my decision to get into the business side of healthcare. But he is always there to guide me.

He is very outgoing and funny. He cares a lot for us and encourages us to chase our dreams. I still remember when I was five-year old, he used to carry me on his shoulder as soon as he used to get back from work and run all around the house. I used to feel as if I was on the top of the world. If I want to get something, it is my dad whom I rush to! It might sound selfish, but I take full advantage of the fact that he can’t say no to me! He is a sweetheart.

A

STITCH IN TIME‌ R

heumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto immune disease associated with stiffness and pain in joints. Typically it affects the peripheral joints, for example hands, wrists, shoulders and knees. Commonly joints on both the hands and feet are affected.

red | november 2013 | 122

CAUSE The exact cause of RA is not known. There is a strong association of RA in certain families. Although there is no heritable link in the transmission of RA certain genetic factors are known to have a higher association with the development of RA. Certain environmental factors like smoking and pollution have been shown to have a higher risk of development of RA. There is a complex association between certain genetic risk factors and smoking that can cause development of auto antibodies which cause RA. TREATMENT Though the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis has improved drastically over the last couple of decades, it could lead to permanent damage to joints if not treated appropriately and promptly. Early intervention prevents any damage/deformity to your joints. The cornerstone of treatment of RA is DMARD (disease modifying and rheumatic drug) therapy. On an as and when needed basis steroids and non steroidal antiinflammatory medications (NSAIDS) can be used but their use needs to be limited to the bare minimum. Biological treatment for RA has been in use for over the last two decades and there has been a remarkable progress seen in the care of the patients. Rheumatoid arthritis is like a small fire that gradually burns down the furniture. Pain and swelling are like smoke coming out of this fire. Just like stopping the smoke won’t stop the fire taking pain killers from a medical shop won’t solve the problem. DMARDs control the fire and lead to reduction of smoke (pain and swelling) DIET There is a popular belief that RA is caused by eating tuberous vegetables like potatoes, there is no scientific basis for this. There are certain European countries like France where potatoes are the staple food so the whole population should be suffering from arthritis. There are no dietary causes of RA however certain foods are known to make symptoms of RA. In general the advice is to avoid foods rich in fat and cholesterol and have foods less in saturated fats. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT RA • Early diagnosis and management is of utmost importance • Don’t ignore stiffness, swelling and pain in joints that have not had injuries • Complete remission (control of disease) can be achieved though medications • Although there is evidence of familial clustering this disease is not inherited. • Once diagnosed in addition to treatment simple exercises are advised on the affected joint to keep the muscle tone intact • Occasionally there can be an overlap with other connective tissue diseases like Sjogrens syndrome and SLE. Visit your Rheumatologist at the earliest.

MYTHS • There is a permanent cure to arthritis in alternative medicine • Potatoes and other tuberous vegetables cause arthritis • Knee replacement is the only cure for it • All allopathic treatments will have side effects in every individual ARE CHICKUNGUNIA AND RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS THE SAME? No, Chickungunia arthritis is a type of reactive arthritis whereby the body’s immune system responds to an attack by a virus with its immune system. There is usually a short-lived (usually lasting upto 6 weeks) type of arthritis. This type of arthritis mostly gets better by itself with some supportive therapy and SLE. Visit your Rheumatologist at the earliest.

FACILITY AT THE DOORSTEP At Dr. Adim’s Centre for Rheumatology we not only use the latest diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound for early diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis but also monitor disease over a period of time. We have the experience of treating patients with inflammatory arthritis for nearly eight years, six of which have been at the super specialist level. We adopt latest evidence based strategy for treatment of arthritis and have experience of using biologic therapy on more than 400 patients. We have been quick to learn and use ultrasounds guided injections for various joint injections and have experience of using musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnostic and interventional purposes over the years.

AGE

NO BAR A ge is just a number if you are physically active. It is important to stay healthy and feel fit at any age. In fact, mid-life fitness regimen increases chances of living healthy during old age. People above 50 years can experience a range of problems including: Reduction in... • Muscle mass, strength and physical endurance • Coordination and balance • Joint flexibility and mobility • Cardiovascular and respiratory function • Bone strength

Myth: Older people shouldn’t exercise. They should save their strength and rest.

SUGGESTIONS

Fact: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50. Inactivity often causes older adults lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalizations, doctor visits, and use of medicines.

Cardio endurance exercise: Cardio workouts walking, stair climbing, swimming, hiking, cycling, rowing, tennis and dancing, get the heart pumping and one may feel a little short of breath.

Myth: Exercise puts the old at risk of falling down.

Strength and power training: Strength training, using weight or external resistance from body weight, machines, free weights or elastic bands build up muscle.

Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina, prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually reducing your risk of falling.

Increase in... • Body fat levels • Blood pressure • Susceptibility to mood disorders

Myth: It’s too late. I’m already too old to start exercising. Fact: You’re never too old to exercise. If you’ve never exercised before, or it’s been a while, start with light walking and other gentle activities.

MYTHS & FACTS Myth: As you get older, you slow down. A 70-year-old can’t be expected to keep up with a 50-year-old on a bike or a hike. It’s only natural. Fact: One cannot deny the impact of age on speed and fitness forever, but research shows that one can push back, hard.

Myth: There’s no point to exercising. I’m going to get old anyway. Fact: Exercise and strength training help you look and feel younger and stay active longer. It lowers the risk of conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Myth: I’m disabled. I can’t exercise sitting down.

Flexibility: Stationary stretches and stretches that involve movement keep muscles and joints supple making them less prone to injury. Yoga is an excellent means. Balance: Try yoga and posture exercises to gain confidence with balance.

So, finally I would like to say…exercise regularly, look fit and stay active. LET THEM KEEP GUESSING, YOUR AGE!

Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges but can lift light weights, stretch, and do chair aerobics to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone and promote cardiovascular health.

EXERCISE & MENTAL HEALTH • Improves sleep • Boosts mood and self-confidence • Benefits regular brain functions and keeps it active. Prevents memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia.

I

t was a show filled with all that one can ask for - celebrity presence, music, dance, feasts and family bonding. Divya, sister of Mr.Chandu Tippala, CMD, red magazine and daughter of former MLA Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy and Mrs.Vijaya Lakshmi, exchanged vows with Bharath, son of Mr.Vellanki Lokanath Venkata Satyanarayana and Mrs.Padmalatha. It was a large, opulent and over-the-top wedding the city has witnessed this season. The seven-day-long event was a blend of traditional rituals and contemporary trends. Right from native Raata ceremony, Pradhanam, Bridal Shower as per the Andhra tradition to the adopted cosmopolitan revelry like Mehendi and Sangeet, the event had all the ingredients of a big-fat-Indianwedding. Trinkets worth crores, trousseau of millions, haute styling, plush backdrops conceptualised by ace Event Manager, Alka Jaju and venues, long convoys of swanky wagons ferrying the elegant and elite, vast spreads of rich delicacies served by Sri Sai Ayyappa Suppliers-the list looked endless. DAY 1 The family set the tone of the wedding, initiating the ceremonies with Raata ritual. The Haldi marked the auspicious beginning of the wedding rituals and beautiful Divya was dressed as the bride. She looked gorgeous in a traditional red and gold silk sari, adorning temple jewellery. The family and friends were there to bless and wish the bride. Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation Mr. N. Raghuveera Reddy was the celebrity guest for the occasion. Evincing keen interest in the initiating ceremony, Mr. Raghuveera Reddy took an active part in the raata ritual. Later he interacted with the bride as he partook in the feast. A scrumptious lunch was served to nearly 4,000 guests.

DAY 2 Pradhanam took place with traditional fervour. The bridegroom’s mother, along with her relatives visited the Tippala residence to present the bride with gift hampers containing jewellery, saris, sweets and fruits. Family friends Dr. T Subbarami Reddy, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee for Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, Minister for Registration & Stamps Thota Narasimham, Mrs and Mr. AP Chowdhary, CMD, RINL and Mr. Nagaprasad of People’s Combine were prominently present on the occasion.

DAY 3 Mrs Yerrayyamma, mother of Mr. Gurumurthy Reddy, led Mr.Chinna Appa Rao and family, Mr. Appala Swamy and family, who performed bridal shower and presented Divya with jewellery and clothes. Divya was looking radiant in a bronze colour sari and a designer- blouse with matching jewellery. This was a close door ritual in which only the family members and a few relatives took part.

DAY 4 In a surprise move, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy drove straight from the airport to the Tippala residence to bless the couple. He was accompanied by Ministers Satrucharla Vijayarama Raju, Ganta Srinivasa Rao and former Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao. Union Minister Dr. Killi Kruparani and A.K. Khan, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director, APSRTC, also blessed the couple.

DAY 5 When it is about the Tippala family, every celebration has to be grand. So was the bridal shower, which continued for more than one day to accommodate all the elderly of the family to shower the bride with blessings. It was Mr. and Mrs. T Ramana Reddy and family’s turn to perform the bridal shower. Even former Speaker KR Suresh Reddy joined the family for the occasion.

Day 6 It was the day of entertainment and it saw the entire family and friends going euphoric with high dose of music, dance and bit of drama. The stage was well decorated with the shimmering disco lights. There were two groups. One led by none other than the bride had her cousins and friends in the team competing with the boys’ team led by Chandu. It was a touching moment for Divya, who was regaled by her brother and cousins with their performances. The fitting finale was the fashion show in which all the girls flaunted their oomph striking a perfect connect with the latest trends. The DJ belted out some popular numbers. The bride’s mom Vijaya ramp walked taking the onlookers by surprise. Not to be left behind is the bride’s father Gurumurthy Reddy, who fell in step with revellers.

red | november 2013 | 138

Day 7 It was time for Bangle and Mehendi ceremony. Women from both the bride and groom’s side were there in full attendance to get their palms smeared with henna by veteran mehendi artiste Jayashree Parekh. The patterns were unique and eye-catching. The traditional mehendi songs were rendered by a group of professionals, who could get a few of the guests to sing along.
