Marni is an illiterate Javanese woman who still practices ancestor worship. Through her offerings she finds her gods and puts forth her hopes. She knows nothing of the God brought from a faraway land. Rahayu is Marni’s daughter, part of a new generation shaped by education and an easier life. She is a firm believer in God and common sense. She stands against the ancestors, even against her own mother. To Marni, Rahayu is a soulless being. And to Rahayu, Marni is a sinner. Each lives according to her creed, with nothing in common. Then comes the sound of the jackboots, disrupting and destroying souls. They have the authority to play with power, as they desire. They can turn the skies and the fields red with blood, their guns ready to kill anywhere. Marni and Rahayu, women from two generations who have never understood each other, finally have something in their lives they agree on. Both are victims of those in power. Both fight against the guns. Gramedia, Indonesia. Publication date: July 2013 272 pages, 14 cm x 21 cm, paperback. World rights available. Ahmad Fuadi

From Journalist to Novelist, from Sumatra to America Ahmad Fuadi was born in Bayur, a small village on the edge of Lake Maninjau, West Sumatra, in 1972. Fuadi traveled to Java to fulfill his mother’s request that he attend a religious school. At Pondok Modern Gontor (Gontor Modern Pesantren), he met kiai and ustad who were blessed with sincerity to teach knowledge of this world and the next. Gontor also taught him the simple yet powerful mantra, man jadda wajada—he who gives his all will surely succeed. Upon graduating with a degree in International Relations from Padjadjaran University, he became a journalist for Tempo magazine. His first class in journalism was done in reporting assignments under the guidance of senior Tempo journalists. In 1999, he received a Fulbright scholarship to take his master’s degree at the School of Media and Public Affairs, George Washington University, USA. Venturing to Washington, D.C. together with Yayi, his wife—also a Tempo journalist—was a childhood dream come true. While studying, they were also Tempo correspondents and reporters for Voice of America (VOA). They reported on historical news, such as the 9-11 tragedy, straight from the Pentagon, White House, and Capitol Hill. In 2004, another world window opened when he received the Chevening Award scholarship to study documentary films at Royal Holloway, University of London. As a scholarship hunter, Fuadi is always enthusiastic to continue his education and find more scholarships. He has had opportunities to live and study in Canada, Singapore, USA, and the UK. Currently, Fuadi is busy writing, being a speaker and motivator locally and internationally, and building a social foundation to aid in the education of the underprivileged—Komunitas Menara. Negeri 5 Menara (The Land of Five Towers) has won several awards, including the 2010 Khatulistiwa Literary Award (Long List) and the 2010 Favorite Fiction Writer and Book from the Indonesian Readers Awards.

Rantau 1 Muara (The Journey of One Destination)

Trilogi Negeri 5 Menara Kepercayaan diri Alif sedang menggelegak.

Man jadda wajada.

Namun Alif lulus di saat yang salah. Akhir ‘90-an, Indonesia dicekik krisis ekonomi dan dihoyak reformasi. Lowongan pekerjaan sulit dicari.

Life is perfect, sampai terjadi tragedi 11 September 2001 di New York yang menggoyahkan jiwanya. Kenapa orang dekatnya harus pergi? Alif dipaksa memikirkan ulang misi hidupnya.

Man shabara zhafira.

Muara segala muara.

Man saara ala darbi washala.

The Journey of One Destination is the third book of Fuadi’s trilogy. Alif feels like he’s standing on top of the world. He travels the globe, his writings are published, and he graduates with top grades. He is sure the top companies will kill to hire him, but it is the end of the nineties, when Indonesia is strangled with a monetary crisis and the country is in turmoil due to reform. One by one he receives refusal letters. A ray of hope emerges when he is hired as a journalist by a well-reputed magazine, and falls in love with a girl he used to distrust. Where will their relationship take them? He wins a scholarship to Washington, DC, finds a decent job and meets new friends in America. Life is perfect, until the September 11 tragedy at World Trade Center. He is forced to re-examine his mission in life. Where did he begin and where will he end? The third mantra is, “man saara ala darbi washala,” or, He who walks his path shall arrive at the destination. This guides him in the journey to find his mission in life. Life is essentially a journey. The Journey of One Destination is about the consistency necessary to walk toward a destination, the search for a soul mate, and finding a safe harbor. Inspired by true events, The Land of Five Towers tells the story of Alif, who had never set foot outside of West Sumatra. He passes his childhood searching for fallen durian fruit in the jungle, playing soccer on rice paddies, and swimming in the blue waters of Lake Maninjau. His mother wants him to attend an Islamic boarding school, a pesantren, while he dreams of public high school. Halfheartedly, he follows his mother’s wishes. He takes a grueling three-day bus ride from Sumatra to Madani Pesantren in a remote village on Java. On his first day, Alif is captivated by the powerful phrase, “man jadda wajada,” or, He who gives his all will surely succeed. He quickly becomes friends with five boys from across the archipelago, and together they become known as the Fellowship of the Manara. Beneath the mosque’s minaret, the boys gaze at the clouds on the horizon, and imagine distant lands like America and Europe. Where will these dreams take them? They don’t know. What they do know was: never underestimate dreams, no matter how high they may be. The Land of Five Towers is the first book in a trilogy that includes Ranah 3 Warna (The Realm of Three Colors) and Rantau 1 Muara (The End of Journey), also published by Gramedia. Gramedia, Indonesia. Publication date: November 2011 416 pages, 14 cm x 21 cm, paperback. World rights available, except for Malaysia. Namun kawan karibnya, Randai, meragukan Alif mampu lulus UMPTN. Terinspirasi semangat tim dinamit Denmark, dia mendobrak rintangan berat. Baru saja dia tersenyum, badai lain menggempurnya silih berganti tanpa ampun. Hampir saja dia menyerah. Rupanya “mantra” man jadda wajada saja tidak cukup sakti dalam memenangkan hidup. Alif teringat “mantra” kedua yang diajarkan di Pondok Madani: man shabara zhafira. Siapa yang bersabar akan beruntung. Berbekal kedua mantra itu dia songsong badai hidup satu persatu. Bisakah dia memenangkan semua impiannya? Ke mana nasib membawa Alif? Apa saja 3 ranah berbeda warna itu? Siapakah Raisa? Bagaimana persaingannya dengan Randai? Apa kabar Sahibul Menara? Kenapa sampai muncul Obelix, orang Indian, Michael Jordan, dan Kesatria Berpantun? Apa hadiah Tuhan buat sebuah kesabaran yang kukuh? Ranah 3 Warna adalah hikayat tentang bagaimana impian tetap wajib dibela habis-habisan walau hidup digelung nestapa tak berkesudahan. Tuhan sungguh bersama orang yang sabar.

7/11/11 10:29 AM

In the second volume of Ahmad’s trilogy that began with Negeri 5 Menara (The Land of Five Towers), Alif has just graduated from Pondok Madani. He wants to learn sophisticated technology in Bandung like Habibie, and then go to America. Spirit on fire, he returns to Maninjau and looks forward to college until his best friend Randai points out he will not be admitted without a high school diploma. How can he achieve his dream? He studies to break through the hard challenge. One after the other, storms keeps coming in. Alif is tired and starts to wonder how long should he stand against the test. He almost quits. The “man jadda wajada” mantra is not enough to win in life. He remembers the second mantra taught in Pondok Madani: “man shabara zhafira,” or He who has patience will have fortune. With the two mantras he faces the obstacles in life. Can he realize his dreams? Where will fate take him? What are the three realms with different colors? Why do Obelix, Indians, Michael Jordan, and the Rhyming Knights appear? How will God reward him for his patience and perseverance? Gramedia, Indonesia.

Tapi Ivano bergeming. Dia masih terus menatap pilar putih di depan katedral kota para mafioso Eropa itu. Semua yang dikatakan Raghi benar adanya.

While in mourning, Marshall meets John, a stranger who offers him a job as a contract killer. He carries out executions for major corporations and certain governments around the world, and sees how the global economy works against the developing countries. Marshall amasses a fortune from his assignments, but he is unable to fill the void left by his brother’s untimely death. A target in Indonesia takes him to Jakarta, and begins his journey of self-discovery. With this novel, the author distracts Indonesian youngsters from their fascination of Europe.

Semanis ludah Roro Mendut. Karya yang indah dan sayang untuk dilewatkan! —John-De Rantau, sutradara NOVEL /FIKSI Penerbit PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama Kompas Gramedia Building Blok I Lantai 5 Jl. Pak Raja is dying. In his last moments he calls for Jeng Yah, a woman who isn’t his wife. His three children— Lebas, Karim, and Tegar, heirs to Kretek Djagad Raja, a large cigarette factory—are anxious, and the mother burns with jealousy because of her husband’s last request. So begins the search into the deepest regions of Java for Jeng Yah to fulfill their father’s dying wish, and learn the truth about the family’s business and secrets. The heirs meet an old worker and discover the beginning of Djagad Raja Cigarettes before it became the number one brand in Indonesia. They also learn the love story between their father and Jeng Yah, the owner of Kretek Gadis, a local cigarette from the town of M that was famous in its time. Cigarette Girl is more than a love story and the soul-searching journey of its characters. Set in M, Kudus, and Jakarta, the story takes its readers from the Dutch colonial era to the development of the cigarette industry in Indonesia. Cigarette Girl is imbued with the scent of tobacco and rich with the fragrance of love. Shocking and rich with details up to the last sentence. Unknowingly we are taken along with three young Indonesians who attempt to straighten the history twisted by a generation dispersed during violent revolution and the most controversial political and social conditions in this country. (Cigarette Girl) is a beautiful work, and not to be missed. —John de Rantau, director of The Blue Generation

In The Land of Taboo, “Rebellion emerges at the edge of patience. Destruction lies at the edge of desire. And tears are only for the weak.” Winner of the Jakarta Art Council 2008 Novel Writing Competition, Anindita tells the story of Mabel, who believes that destiny won’t end well unless she watches her step, especially since she is a woman. Mace, her daughter-in-law, cannot forget her past trauma, and Leksi her granddaughter, likes to do whatever she wants. Luckily she has Pum and Kwee, her reliable helpers. They help Leksi learn how to live the hard life in The Land of Taboo. Mabel says, “We have to be strong… Never give up. Keep fighting for our future generations. They must have a better life. Anindita has written an ethnographic novel, not with a spirit of colonial exoticism, but an emphatic perspective. I get to know a girl named Leksi, from Papua, who demonstrates smart criticism with naivety, and Mabel, an example of a great woman, without the complication and cheekiness of an urban girl activist. —Kris Budiman, literary critic, Jakarta Art Council Gramedia, Indonesia. Gitanyali Memoir 901120544 ISBN: 9789799104502

Number 65 has always been part of Gitanyali’s life. The failed coup of 1965 brought a radical change in her life—the daughter of a prosperous party leader one moment, a pariah the next. In her effort to free herself from her father’s sins, she changes her name many times and defines freedom on her own terms. An encounter with Emma, the owner of an art gallery in Bangkok, shows Gitanyali the mystical meaning of the number 65. A new world full of love and hope opens, but if she wants to get in, she must leave behind her wild love affair with Tante Rosa in a small town in Central Java, Hilda in Bandung, and Christine in Paris. And she must make peace with the memories of her past. KPG, Indonesia. Publication date: May 2012 212 pages, 14 cm x 21 cm, paperback. World rights available. In the waning days of Dutch rule over Indonesia, a Chinese merchant bought the license to NV Nederlandsch lndische Spaar en Deposito (NISP) with his last assets and went on to run the bank successfully. By tradition, he was obligated to express gratitude for his good fortune by paying homage to his ancestor’s burial place in China. Unexpected complications hindered his return to Indonesia for sixteen years. The responsibility for the bank, ruined by senior manager embezzlement, fell to his son-in-law, Karmaka, a teacher with only a high school diploma. He gave respect to elders, remained true to his word, played fair with enemies, and had compassion for the meek while using his determination to overcome Indonesia’s economic turmoil of 1960 and the Asian economic crisis of 1997. The stress of his responsibilities coupled with grave threats to his health culminated in risky liver and kidney transplants. Karmaka and his resourceful wife not only kept NISP alive and thriving but also molded the characters of their five children, two of whom became the bank’s executives. A solid partnership with IFC-World Bank Group and OCBC Bank of Singapore has paved the way for NISP, recognized as the sole survivor from the past seventy years of Indonesian private banking history, to rise even higher in the new millennium. Based on in-depth interview with over twenty sources, Dr. Tjipta reveals what happened behind various historical events, like Soekarno (Indonesia’s first president from 1945 to 1967) being afraid of hypodermic needles, the 1974 post-malaria media shut-out, the tragedy of July 27, 1996, Soeharto (Indonesia’s second president from 1967 to 1998) taking his vengeance on Habibie, attempts to replace the head of National Troops (TNI), impeachment to Gus Dur, Megawati’s contempt towards Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and more hidden facts unknown to public. Understanding past and present leaders can teach much about character, as well as what kind of communication a leader should have and how this influences public reaction. They will receive our respect and dignity, or disdain and insult. The stories in From Soekarno to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will make readers laugh in delight or disbelief, and shows how they can better communicate. Gramedia, Indonesia. —Jusuf Kalla, Mantan Wakil Presiden RI

Jokowi: Politik Tanpa Pencitraan (Jokowi: Politics Without Imagery)

It’s time to end the paid polling that makes our transition to democracy costly. Politics is the art of gaining and sharing power in the public interest. We want leaders that run his or her elected office with dignity. Good politicians are elected for their achievement and reputation of honesty; we don’t want politicians who get into office by buying votes. Jokowi is a politician who projects himself honestly, with proven achievements and reputation. He has a unique and inimitable political brand. Everyone has a distinctive character, so each can build his or her own political brand without relying on false imagery. Jokowi: Politics Without Imagery is an important read for those who want to follow his example. Jokowi is a good listener. He listens to what people want and seriously takes them into consideration before any action. That’s the kind of leader Jakarta needs. —Jusuf Kalla, former vice president of the Republic of Indonesia

This is not an ordinary book. Discover the spirit of leadership through anecdotes and memories of Jokowi, a spirit from the banks of Kali Anyar. As mayor of Solo, he paid attention to humanity and acted as a guardian for his people. Following the relocation of one thousand street vendors without violence and eviction, ninety percent of the voting population re-elected him for a second term. “It’s because I myself was evicted,” he says. Jokowi’s pro-people leadership style is rooted in his early childhood. Since he was a little boy, he was always trusted and reliable. His colleagues and employees in his company admit that he’s good at leadership and diplomacy. Through many challenges, Jokowi remains energetic and enthusiastic in dealing with his people. Non Fiction RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY

Examining Islam in the West: Addressing Accusations and Correcting Dr. Alwi Shihab Religion/Spirituality 20401110040 ISBN: 9789792267716

Dr. Alwi Shihab, Indonesia’s presidential envoy to the Middle East and former minister of foreign affairs, addresses the modern conflict between Islam and Christianity, and demonstrates that followers of both faiths misunderstand the teachings of their religions. Examining Islam in the West is a meeting point necessary to build harmony between Muslims and Christians, because the two religions actually come from the same root. The negative image that many people in the West have of Islam is ungrounded and they need to learn about the real Islam. Rather than seeing one another as enemies, Alwi believes that Muslims and Christians must forge a new friendship and Indonesia, as the country with the greatest number of Muslims, should take on a greater role in creating a bridge between Islam and the West. In this book, Dr. Shihab demonstrates the power of one individual’s commitment to building bridges between two cultures. His exchanges with his students show how woefully ignorant young Americans are of Islam, and how much their negative impressions can change through exposure to sympathetic, accessible Muslim intellectuals. Their lack of knowledge suggests that the American government should spend at least as much time educating its own population about Islam as it does in public relations efforts directed at Muslim communities abroad. —Sidney Jones, director of the Southeast Asia Project, International Crisis Group True harmony among religious believers must be built, first and foremost, on the recognition understanding, and respect for the teachings, traditions, and values of other religions. [Dr. Shihab’s] testimony of the beneficial role of Islam to the world needs to be heard and shared. —Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja, SJ Gramedia, Indonesia.

For author Hanum Salsabiela Rais, Europe holds the mystery of a noble culture, the civilization of Islam. 99 Lights in the European Sky tells the story of her search for the ninety-nine lights of perfection on the continent. The journey introduces her to the heroes of Islam in the past, and she finds peace of mind about her existence. In the end, Europe is more than the Eiffel Tower and the Coliseum. It is a land of faith. Hanum gathers the pieces of the glory of Islam in Europe several centuries past. Furthermore, she sees the values of Islam in Europe. Traditional Indonesian snacks retain their popularity alongside the imported snacks we find more and more everyday. Indonesian snacks have their own charm and a sense of familiarity, as they are made of local ingredients. Since wheat doesn’t grow in tropic soil, plain and sticky rice flour, or sago and cassava starch are used. The chewy, soft, and oily texture come from coconut milk. An oven is not needed since most of them are steamed. First published in 1998 and reprinted several times, the latest edition of this bestseller has a new, more attractive look and format. expertise, a dedicated set of tools, and a regiment of processing methods which have been perfected for hundreds of years as a collective wisdom. I dedicate this book to all batik-makers in Indonesia. I say to them, the beauty of batik is your beauty, too.
