reach

is an aspirational concept. It’s about what you might want to do with your life, might dream of doing, and might—very possibly—DO. But you have to want it enough to . . .

reach farther than you thought you could— and touch your future.

By offering challenging programs, dedicated faculty at the top of their field, advice and help along the way, and costs that won’t drag you down after you graduate, YSU can help you do it. reach success for academic

Youngstown State University will provide you with everything you need to build a solid foundation for your future.

• Over 115 undergraduate majors from traditional to high-tech. • Programs accredited by the most prestigious national and international accrediting bodies, including AACSB (business); ABET (engineering); and NCATE (education). YSU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (see inside front cover of this viewbook).

Brionna Benson, below, a criminal justice major, worked in downtown Youngstown in the County Prosecutor’s Office this past summer.

internships

Internships are increasingly an essential ingredient in student success. As you apply classroom learning in the workplace, you also have an opportunity to explore your career options, network with seasoned professionals, and develop self-confidence, leadership skills, and professionalism. At YSU, you’ll find all the help you need to set up an internship in your field. Most internships are paid, some are not, but in either case, the experience you gain will prove invaluable in your career. And many—if not most—internships lead to job offers after graduation.

• Outstanding faculty, 83% of whom hold the highest degree attainable in their field. • High-quality students—201 of them were valedictorians of their high school graduating class; many more are at YSU on academic scholarships. • Undergraduate access to advanced equipment for research projects. • Funding for undergraduate research projects. • The latest computers and software. • Study-abroad opportunities (see page7). • Individualized curriculum options, so you can build your own major if you wish. • On-line research services and comprehensive libraries.

YSU undergraduates find themselves involved in high-end research usually reserved for graduate students at other universities.

2 Youngstown State University

YSU’s location in the heart of Youngstown provides easy access to prime internship sites. Omar Alhadi, a senior business major, spent this past summer at Revere Data LLC downtown, a five-minute walk from campus.

A bigger

If you’re the type of student who wants to dig deeper, take on challenges, and ask big questions, you might be a candidate for Youngstown State University’s Honors and Scholars programs. Honors classes and seminars are available in all colleges to all majors, and qualified students may take honors classes or may apply to enroll in the Honors Program. If accepted into the program, you have the option of living in Cafaro House, the honors residence (pictured below). Successful completion of the program will earn you an honors diploma. It’s the kind of credential that will open many doors for you.

Heather Coonfari, a business management sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, says she loves the Scholars program, because “I have such a great sense of community with the other students” in the program.

Cafaro House, the honors residence, provides students in the Scholars, Honors, and B.S./M.D. programs an intensive, academically focused environment, but also has plenty of comfortable gathering places, a fitness area, and living suites to accommodate your space needs. Like all YSU residence halls, Cafaro is wirelessenabled, with in-room cable connections.

At the

heart

of YSU is the academic enterprise —the high quality of the faculty, the classes they teach, and the programs that foster student success.

YSU offers a truly comprehensive selection of 117 major programs, so you can explore your academic interests across a broad spectrum without losing credits toward your degree.

colleges Business—The Williamson College of Business Administration is housed in a new, state-of-the-art “green” building (left) and accredited by the AACSB International, earned by only 5% of business schools in the U.S.

Liberal Arts and Social Sciences—CLASS says it all: top-quality faculty, limitless opportunities for engaged learning, innovative programs, and outstanding preparation for graduate work.

Education—The Beeghly College of Education is fully

STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-

accredited by the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education. Only half the teacher-preparation programs across the U.S. have NCATE accreditation. Students receive extensive classroom experience through field work that begins in the first year.

Fine and Performing Arts—Bliss Hall buzzes with

creativity day and night. YSU has an All-Steinway music school and full accreditation by NASM (music), NASAD (art), and NAST (theater), one of only three universities in Ohio to hold all three accreditations.

Health and Human Services— The Bitonte College of Health and Human Services is distinguished by top-notch clinical facilities, outstanding licensure pass rates, and excellent job placement in these high-demand fields.

ematics all in one college provides seamless integration of learning and research across disciplines. Undergraduate students regularly engage in high-end research with faculty, using state-of-the-art equipment like the transmission electron microscope that can show you what an atom actually looks like!

Graduate Studies—a full range of master’s programs

Junior Zane Kalik, a double major in biology and chemistry, wrote and presented an abstract and poster at the 55th Annual Biophysics Society meeting in Baltimore last fall. He is now finishing a manuscript that will be submitted to a major peer-reviewed scientific journal.

As part of your college education, why not explore an option that will change your life? Studying in another country will expand your knowledge, broaden your cultural awareness, and boost your confidence and self awareness. It’s also a very compelling resumé item. Through YSU’s direct agreements, consortium partnerships, and individualized programs, opportunities await you in more than forty countries. Studying abroad is more affordable than you may think, and most financial aid can be applied to approved overseas study programs. The professional staff of YSU’s Center for International Studies and Programs(CISP) is always available to help you make it happen.

Connections

Wireless YSU network connectivity across campus, including residence halls, for access to University academic resources and the Internet.

Staying Safe

YSU consistently ranks among the safest public universities in Ohio, kept that way by a highly trained campus police force, well-lit walkways and buildings, a network of campus emergency phones, surveillance cameras, and 24/7 security.

At the CISP, you will receive • • • • • • •

Help with finding the right study-abroad option for you The right coursework to fulfill your academic requirements Help with identifying funding sources Credit transfer Great travel advice and tips Pre-departure and re-entry orientation Help in identifying financial resources for study abroad, including scholarships and grants

Study abroad can take many different forms. Some programs offer a cultural and language immersion experience. Others offer coursework at a foreign university taught in the language of that country, which is ideal for students who have achieved proficiency in another language. In addition to programs in the English-speaking world, YSU maintains partnerships with universities in Taiwan and Turkey that offer a wide range of courses taught in English, allowing students to take a combination of language training and other academic courses in their majors.

A whole world awaits students who take advantage of study-abroad opportunities.

Studying abroad is, in the words of one student at YSU, “a life-changing experience.” Visit places you’ve only read about. Meet people whose outlook on the world is quite different from your own. Learn to see with new eyes. In a world gone global, you owe it to yourself.

There are also short-term programs in which students and professors travel abroad, teaching and learning along the way. 6 Youngstown State University
