Barnes & Ross McAuley
Lesley Barnes and Ross McAuley live and work in Glasgow. Lesley works as an illustrator and her distinctive, bright and joyful work spans the worlds of fashion, music, children’s literature, film and product design. She has worked with clients such as Apple, Google, The New Yorker and the New York Times, as well as institutions such as Tate and the V&A in London. Ross is a painter, originally from Toronto, whose work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and Glasgow Print Studio among others.
They have come together to create their largest and most ambitious collection of sculptural work to date, which explores how form, colour, and shape can dance in space, creating an immersive environment of colour and pattern which is so synonymous to Barnes’ work, and which captures the sense of endless possibility and adventure that fashion can offer.
This exhibition features 33 hand turned and decorated wooden sculptures, fabric wall hangings printed at the internationally renowned Glasgow School of Art and a stunning array of vinyl images, designed by Barnes, which decorate the walls alongside hand painted and decorated plinths with perfectly contrasting colours, spots, stripes, diamonds and geometric shapes and patterns, creating a visually stunning exhibition.
Fashion Play features beautifully designed, handmade wooden figures inspired by Lesley’s most recent book, Fashion Play (Counter-Print Books, 2024), an interactive book for lovers of fashion, colour and pattern. The book is divided into three sections, allowing you to mix and match fashion outfits in a delightfully playful manner, creating an endless fashion playground. As well as new sculptural works and illustrative prints, the exhibition features new large scale figurative mobiles and textile wall hangings, based on spots and stripes with a bold use of colour bringing energy and joyfulness to each unique piece.
A range of merchandise has been developed for the show, including magnet and sticker sets, wooden pin badges and a tote bag, all designed exclusively for YSP by Lesley Barnes. Works are viewable within the YSP Centre, including the Upper Space Gallery, and concourse areas, and includes a new collection of wooden figures, mobiles, and textiles.
Prices range from £250 to £850 with all proceeds going direct to the artist and to Yorkshire Sculpture Park to support it’s charitable work.
