Y Soft is a Czech company that operates on a global scale to offer a unique print management solution (software & hardware). Our product enables businesses and other organizations to effectively control printing costs, reduce waste, increase user convenience, and have a positive impact on the environment.


So who are we?

Y Soft was founded in the city of Brno in 2000. At a time when no entrepreneurial incubators existed in the Czech Republic, a student company – today we would call it a “startup” – was created with the vision of developing into a truly global Czech company. To successfully compete in today‘s global environment takes not only innovative thinking, great ideas and resources, but also a sense of fairness. Y Soft wants to go even farther, making ethical business one of our key values. Y Soft first emerged as a tiny sprout from a few grains of sand. In the beginning everyone said we were crazy – and they were right. The first five projects we participated in failed. But our founders persisted, saying, “We look for ways to succeed, not excuses for failure.” In 2003 our sixth project, YSoft SafeQ, succeeded – and the success of this product enabled Y Soft to grow into the global company it has since become. Today Y Soft employs more than 180 people, 135 of whom are based in the Czech Republic.

What do we do? Y Soft is a product-oriented company. The core of our business is the YSoft SafeQ family of products for medium-sized and large businesses. Our portfolio continues to grow into the future, with new solutions such as the Public Cloud. Y Soft creates products that answer our clients’ immediate needs – products they can use now, in a year or five years. YSoft SafeQ is used by four of the five biggest companies in the Czech Republic and by numerous Fortune 500 enterprises, financial institutions, large manufacturers and service organizations. You can find YSoft SafeQ everywhere – in banks, insurance companies, car factories, hospitals, universities and high schools – and also in government offices, power plants, manufacturing operations and oil rigs.

Products YSoft SafeQ – isn’t that the software that keeps track of what I print? Yes, but it’s much more than that. YSoft SafeQ is the print management solution that offers three basic benefits: security, cost tracking, and greater convenience. How many times have you left a document at the printer that wasn’t supposed to be left there for anyone to see? Have you ever had to wrestle with a broken printer or wait in a line of people like you’re at a supermarket? We solve these problems and handle many other sophisticated needs for our clients. We help with the administration of print volumes that may climb to hundreds of millions of sheets of paper every year, assign costs to departments on a monthly basis, and track the carbon footprint of print operations. All this in environments that include hundreds of print servers, thousands of printers, and hundreds of thousands of people who need to print. Color printing is expensive and wasteful – but you would not believe how many prints users make and then never even pick up. They just leave them at the printer! This is the kind of waste YSoft SafeQ prevents.

We work with advanced user authentication mechanisms and provide 24/7 service. Thanks to this service, users in multinational businesses can print their documents in Brno and pick them up when they arrive at their New York subsidiary by simply swiping their ID card on the local printer.

We are not alone in this! Y Soft collaborates with producers of multifunction printers and with other technological partners. Y Soft is a platinum partner of Konica Minolta (www.konicaminolta.com) and Xerox Corporation (www.xerox.com), and is a development partner for many other corporations such as Ricoh, Sharp, Toshiba, and HP. In the domain of identification technology we are a major partner of LEGIC Identsystems, HID Corporation, and Sony.


Technology What software do we work with? •

In Java we work in Eclipse, and/or in IntelliJ Idea using Windows and Linux. We are

currently working on the Java 6 platform and will soon begin working with Java 7 or 8.

• On the Microsoft.Net platform we use Microsoft Visual Studio 2010/2012

with a De-vExpress CodeRush plugin.

Our product comprises several subsystems and modules. We work with J2EE applications (Tomcat/ Apache) on the frontend layer, with the backend implemented as services supported by a servicewrapper container. We use relational and object-oriented databases and work with data cubes and data storage systems. Today YSoft SafeQ is a distributed system built on technologies like JBoss Infinispan. When it comes to all the special buzzwords like Maven, Gradle, JUnit, TestNG, NuGet, LinqPad, JProfiler, OSGI – yes, of course we use them all.

R&D How do we work? We believe in small teams. Each team of developers consists of 5 – 6 members and a Team Leader who coordinates the work of the whole team. Each team has great freedom in organizing its work – and the team’s client is not a crowd of managers but the Product Owner.


…and what is our development environment like? We enjoy our success and invest in the infrastructure we work on. For research and testing, we have an Internet testbed, a farm of Dell servers running the VM Ware Cloud Suite, and other tools. We have 96 CPU cores available (with hyperthreading this amounts to 192 virtual processors), 1.5 TB of RAM, and an EqualLogic storage system with a total capacity of 11.5 TB for fast data saving on SSD disks. Running on top of all this is our continuous integration system, automatic loaders, and function tests (we use Selenium and Quick Test Pro). All developers can have a test environment customized for their needs. If we need to fine-tune any specific function, we can even transfer the entire production environment from the client to our site.


Our clients need to be able to rely on our hardware products for 4 – 6 years after deployment. Imagine that you go to the bank to sign a contract and your banker cannot print it because the card reader on the printer does not work.

This is why all hardware products are tested in our climate lab where they are exposed to, among other things, extreme temperature and humidity environments. This way, we can simulate aging and verify the quality of the materials and components used. The fitting technology based in the headquarters Brno is “more fun than a washing machine”. The machine fits 18,500 components per hour – all with an accuracy of about 30 μm, i.e. 0.03 mm. The final soldering process is done in a lead-free nitrogen atmosphere. For quality control during the production process, we use a machine called AOI (Automatic Optical Inspection). This machine scans printed circuit boards with electromagnetic radiation of varying wavelengths and benchmarks the resulting image against a pattern, so it can automatically evaluate the quality of connectors, accuracy of component positions, etc.


Work ergonomics

At Y Soft we believe that if we want to supply top-class products and professional services on a global level, we need to offer professional working conditions to our staff. We therefore pay great attention to the work environment. So, for instance, to ensure sufficient daylight in our Brno head office and identify better with the environmental aspects of our products, we cut our building in half and planted 10 trees down the middle.
