umbers were down when President Mrs. Trenna Eatts opened the March meeting on Wednesday 8th. Our roll call was to "Was there an ambition that you had that you haven’t achieved?"

We then read & confirmed minutes from our February meeting. We will be holding an Election Day raffle with a grocery parcel & roses donated by Corporate Roses. It was decided that members would donate $4 and two members would purchase items to make up the grocery parcel. We will discuss our 60th Birthday to be held in September at the April Meeting, and also the invitation we received from our Link Branch Morphett Vale for the 16th May to listen to a p r e s en t a ti on on R a wl e i gh s products. Trenna gave a report on the Branch Officers meeting where

the main topic was making plans to hold a fund-raising day called Danish Delights in May at Hindmarsh Valley. We were Encouraged to supply Danish souvenirs if we had them, provide for a cake, produce and plant stall and provide wrapped bottles containing a variety of contents to sell by ticket number. We also had a report on State Council, which Trenna had attended, on our behalf.

After attending to business we proceeded to Yankalilla where we visited Bungala Pottery. Mark Pearse entertained us with a demonstration of pottery making.

Jill then provided us with a lovely afternoon tea. Members were treated to a tour of Bungala House.

i everyone!

It is the start of a new term of the State Labor Government. There was a decided swing towards Labor, including the seat of Finniss with about 8%. With a swing of over 15% required, however, Mr Michael Pengilly has stepped into the former seat vacated by Dean Brown. It will be interesting to see how Mr Pengilly handles the issues that relate to our vibrant and diverse - although often overlooked - electorate.

The Sheepdog Trials were a success and congratulations to the Lions Club who also picked up an Award at the Fleurieu Tourism Awards Night in March. The sheepdogs did however draw the wrath of one local resident, who apparently approached one of the dog owners, insisting that she ‘shut the dogs up’. If anyone knows how to train a dog to silently round up sheep - perhaps using sign language or charades - they may be required for next year.

The dump issue was resolved at a meeting of the Yankalilla Council on 16th March.

The Yankalilla Dump will cease to operate

as a dump and will become a Transfer station. Rubbish will be dumped there and taken to pedlars creek after sorting. For more details contact the Yankalilla Council.

Summer sports are over, winter sports are in and daylight savings are at an end (so you can stop worrying about those curtains fading!) and there should be rain on the way. Roll on, winter!

Congratulations and happy retirement to Bill Borlace, a long serving employee of the Yankalilla District Council. Bill spent many years on the garbage collection truck before it was taken over by Solo and the wheelie bins appeared.

Easter bunny is on the way (or is that the more environmentally friendly Easter Bilby), so enjoy the Easter break and maybe the dentist would like to see you afterwards.

Don’t feed the excess chocolates to your dog! It does nasty things to their health and wellbeing.

S.A. SEA RESCUE (WIRRINA FLOTILLA)

he Wirrina Flotilla of the S.A. Sea Rescue Squadron has had an exceptionally busy time since Christmas attending to some thirty incidents, which has kept all operational members very busy. During our slack periods we were able to assist in erecting our boat shed complete with concrete floor.

The location of the boat shed has greatly improved our response times for emergency call outs. I am happy to report that our new craft "Sea Rescue 5" is performing very well and living up to all expectations. It's greatest attribute is it's fuel economy, using around a litre a nautical mile which is pretty good for a boat of this size.

Congratulations go to Stephen Marshall on being appointed "Skipper" of S.R. 5. Stephen comes to us with a wealth of boating experience having

skippered boats on the Great Barrier Reef and spent some time involved on ferries in Back Stairs Passage. I am sure Stephen will be a great asset to our organisation. We are looking for a person who would like to be a radio operator from your home to operate a radio b ase v iz. ( S ea Re sc ue Normanville). All equipment will be supplied as well as the necessary training to obtain the necessary licence. This position would suit a retired person, male or female who would like an interest with out leaving the comfort of your home. This is a very important yet very rewarding when you pick up a distress call and a rescue is put in motion. Many thanks to our previous base operators who have had to relinquish the position due to work commitments etc. On the Adelaide Cup long weekend we had a boat over due en route from K.I. to Wirrina. After trying to contact this craft by radio without any luck a voice came over the V.H.F. "THIS IS COAST WATCH AIRCRAFT 4 61 CAN I BE OF ANY ASSISTANCE". In no time at all the aircraft had set up a relay between the overdue craft and myself and, the whereabouts of the craft soon plotted. We seem to think that "Coast Watch" only operates in the north of Australia, but it is nice to know that they are also patrolling our local waters. By the time you read this article the event I am going to mention will have been and gone. If you saw a lot of sea

rescue boats, police launches, SES and a lot of Police on Sunday the 19th March, this was because a very large multi agency exercise was held off of Wirrina. I will write further about this exercise in the next issue of Yankalilla news. That's all for now, safe boating and tight lines.

WINING & DINING ON THE SOUTHERN FLEURIEU

Yaccaroo releases first vintage - 2004 Shiraz.

T

he 11 acre Yaccaroo vineyard is situated in the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula wine region and is located just north of the township of Yankalilla. The property comprises 140 acres, with 40 acres of native scrub, including wildflowers common to the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges. The name was chosen to reflect the many yaccas and kangaroos that dwell on the property.

Shiraz vines were planted in 1997 and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1998.

Gavin (formerly from Kangaroo Island) and Julianne (formerly from Eyre Peninsula) and their families have had lengthy associations with agriculture dating back to the early settlements of South Australia.

Following family tradition, sheep have been the main focus of farming practices, until the late 1990’s when a vineyard was established.

Gavin and Julianne Schubert formed “Yaccaroo Wines” in 2004 as a means of marketing wine from fruit grown on “Yaccaroo”, The fruit had previously been sold to Southcorp.

The first wine produced, the 2004 Shiraz, was sourced from approximately 4 ton of fruit harvested by hand

on the property on April 8th 2004. It was basket pressed to open fermenters then put in American oak barrels for 18 months by winemaker, Justin Lane of Redheads Studio, McLaren Vale. The wine was bottled in November 2005 and has now been released.

Paul & Joseph had the opportunity of sampling the 2004 Shiraz. It contains 14.8 % alcohol and shows typical varietal characters. It is deep purple in colour with bouquets of chocolate and cassis and is full bodied on the palate. Smooth tannins lead into balanced fruit flavours with classic pepper and spices.

It can be enjoyed immediately - after breathing for an hour or so is best - and it would improve over time in the cellar.

A sweet taste from France - Renowned French pastry chef captivated by the Southern Fleurieu

enowned pastry chef and teacher Serge Pannetier captivated the staff at cafe Lilla's with his surprise visit last month.

After having enjoyed a meal there, he discovered he was sharing the same passion with the Chef / owner Colleen, for good

quality food, pure and simple ingredients and well established savoir faire, Our community has been enjoying Colleen’s delicious cuisine for the last 18 months. Serge was excited talking with his cooking peer .He came back two days later and offered to share some of his well practised and perfected pastry recipes.

In Lilla's kitchen Serge was carried away.

Colleen’s staffs were undoubtedly intrigued, inspired and interested by this passionate French artisan. Enthusiastic with pastry like an artist with brushes in paint, he hoped he would not disappoint. He did not: Lemon curd tarts, strawberry tartlets, plain and chocolate brioches, peach tart, “pains aux raisins”, almond biscuits are just some of the mouth watering pastries Serge managed to create in one day, from 8am to 5pm, non stop! His energy was infectious.

Colleen and her staffs were very interested

and eager to learn more about these traditional delights, and intend to keep making what Serge demonstrated. Equally they charmed him by their relaxed and fun ways of working together.

Serge phoned me from France to say that the warm welcome of our locals has been the highlights of his holidays.

In La Baule his home town on the French Atlantic coast, Serge Pannetier is a well known as a baker and pastry chef. There is typically a queue of 20 people every day at the opening of his shop. He is also well travelled and has taught in the USA and Japan.

n Wednesday March 8, 2006, the Yankalilla Lions Club were awarded the Community Award for their outstanding contribution to tourism at the annual Fleurieu Tourism Awards at Whaler’s Inn. 2006 FLEURIEU PENINSULA TOURISM AWARDS

leurieu Peninsula tourism industry last night celebrated its eighth annual Tourism Awards at Whalers Inn Resort in Victor Harbor.

The Gala dinner and awards presentation attracted 220 guests from across the region; including operators, sponsors, the judges and local and state government representatives.

Guests were spoiled to a beautiful South Australian evening, with spectacular views over the Bluff, Granite Island and Encounter Bay. Guest presenters during the evening were Member for Finniss, the Hon Dean Brown, SA Tourism Commissions Regional Manager, Michelle Hocking, Chair of Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Mr Jock Veenstra, the Deputy Mayor of Victor Harbor, Deane Michelmore.

MC Mr John Evans entertained the crowd throughout the evening and all enjoyed a fantastic evening with what the Fleurieu Peninsula represents - exquisite local produce, wines and merriment.

One lucky award goer walked away with a prize of 2 return tickets, including vehicle on the KI Sealink ferry, which was kindly donated

by Kangaroo Island Sealink.

Entries were received from 42 businesses across the Fleurieu Peninsula with the most actively contested categories being Hosted B&B/Farmstay, Tourism Restaurant/Café and Festivals & Special Events categories. More and more the Fleurieu Peninsula is being recognised for its amazing food and wine, entertaining events and quality accommodation facilities.

The prestige award of the night was the Outstanding Personal Contribution award. This award was presented to Mr David Thomas, a considerably worthy recipient. Mr Thomas has contributed significantly to tourism on the Fleurieu Peninsula. He has operated a B&B, volunteered at the local information centre in Strathalbyn, and joined several committees and working parties generously giving his time, knowledge and expertise. Mr Thomas has been an Executive Committee member of the Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism Association and has been involved in major projects such as

developing the Fleurieu Way, Wellington Ferry information booth and lastly as the Sales Consultant for the 2006 Fleurieu Peninsula Visitor Guide, increasing industry participation by 35%.

Persecution

have heard a disturbing story about one of Normanville's senior citizens. The persons in question will remain anonymous as to protect them from further persecution from the very people she loves and respects. Now this lovely 75 year old has met up with and decided to marry a equally lovely 76 year old so they both decided to move in with each other. This is when the trouble started. Now they are being accused of living in SIN. Now the 75 year old who has been single for 28 years is a member of a church in Yankalilla, has donated money to this church and been a devoted parishioner for some years but is now being JUDGED by the church as to the way they live. This couple are now beside themselves with worry and have decided to live apart until they are married. Now I'm sure it says somewhere in the Bible that to judge others is to judge yourself and let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. The distress these two elderly citizens are now going through has been very upsetting and done nothing for their health and may even push them out of the district. It seems a real shame that so called upstanding Christian people have nothing better to do with their time other than going around

sticking their big noses into other peoples business. It shames me to think that two people in their twilight years who have found love and companionship in each others arms have decided to bow to the request of such narrow minded people.

obin and Beverley Paine wish to thank all those who offered support and friendship to Irene Paine during the past five years. In May 2001 Irene lost her husband to bone cancer and moved to Normanville to be close to her family. Despite being hindered by a life-long hip problem, she enjoyed trips to the beach to read the Sunday paper and to the Senior Citizens to play cards until her own battle against cancer made getting around too difficult. She often commented at the friendliness of the people in this area and how much she felt "at home". Irene died peacefully in Noarlunga Hospital on the 4th March after a sudden set-back in health.

TV Reception Re TV reception at Normanville and surrounds. ome months ago I consistently complained to the Council per telephone about the exceedingly bad TV reception we were getting, mainly when trying to watch channel nine, I was told that I was the only one complaining, and that more than one complaint was required before they would pass this complaint on. We live at Carrickalinga, so I rang a couple of others in the area and YES they were also having major problems with their reception. I asked that they also call the Council so that something could be done. I am unaware if this caused any action to be taken, but the useless reception still continues to this day. The worst reception is always channel nine, with seven and ten slightly affected. The weather seems to be a major factor with heavy rain producing rapid dots on the screen, but the real killer is strong winds causing intermittent blackouts, squares and blocks on

L E T T E R S the screen rapidly coming and going, accompanied by the sound disappearing in time with the lack of picture clarity. This makes it impossible to view, listen or comprehend any of the programs.

Last week I watched channel seven (perfect viewing) while recording channel nine. My video recording was just a mangled mess of flashing squares, stilted sounds and black outs. Turning the video off and returning to channel nine direct, this same description of our reception still prevailed - so it was not a faulty video. I had given up complaining to the Council as this seemed to be a fruitless exercise, but if we ALL get behind this and complain consistently, loud and long, whenever problems occur, just maybe someone will get off their backside and do something we deserve better than this!

everal weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting your lovely state, and in particular your region. Firstly to visit some old friends, and secondly to pay my respects and to experience the final resting place of the HMAS HOBART, a ship in which I lived and served through the years of 1968-1970, including two tours to the Vietnam Conflict. Old sailors always have an unusual affection for a ship in which they served and me HMAS Hobart was indeed mine. Unfortunately I

would have to say that to describe my feelings for the memorial as a disappointment would be an understatement. I felt that some further information could be appropriate, such as...

• There was no signage whatsoever indicating that the HOBART ‘laid’ in that spot not in Yankalilla or Normanville.

• When we found the memorial there was nothing to show us in which direction she lay, how far out to sea she was scuttled.

• Most disappointing was the lack of attention to the history of the vessel. At the very least I would have thought a bronze plaque with her details and battle honours would have served as a minimum.

To perhaps reinforce this point, it is a little known fact that two men lost their lives and hundreds more lost their innocence aboard HOBART doing the most difficult and challenging of times, war. Personally, I feel that these individuals and their families deserve more. I look forward to your response in due course; I have taken this opportunity to note my feelings to ensure the history of this vessel is maintained not only for now, but for future generations.

This is the first time this kind of funding has been available in the Yankalilla district. This funding program was formulated to ensure that there are transparent funding methods, and every community group gets a fair chance.

Yankalilla Ladies’ Probus Club

ur guest speaker was Dr Lillian Mwanri who originally came from Tanzania in East Africa where she graduated as a Dr of Medicine. She first came to Australia in 1993 and attained her Masters Degree in community Nutrition at the University of Queensland, returned to Tanzania and then came back to SA to pursue a PhD in Public Health as the University of Adelaide. Lillian worked from Whyalla into the far north of South Australia especially into the accessibility and affordability of healthy food in the rural areas of S.A. She was also involved in a project dealing with the issues of falls in the elderly. After 2 years she returned to Adelaide and was involved with communicable food-born diseases in a program of collaboration between the Commonwealth and the States with a network which helps to get on top of the situation quickly.

In 1999 Lillian conducted a project to conduct study of the effect of a diet supplement of Vitamin A and Iron on primary school children in Tanzania. Iron

deficiency is a very serious health problem in developing countries due to a lack of foods of animal origin. Vitamin A is also a serious and major problem and it is the single preventative condition which causes blindness in developing countries. This project formed the base of the thesis for her PhD which she gained through the Adelaide University.

She described her homeland as a beautiful country which contains the natural resources of the Serengeti National Park and the Selous Game Reserve and also a large part of both Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Mixed farming is carried out on small holdings of around 3.9 hectares. Maize is the staple cereal food. The climate is typically tropical with the wet and the dry seasons. Poverty is a big problem and the infrastructure is poor as is the public health system. Anaemia is prevalent in children, as it is in most developing countries and blindness, malaria and HIV- aids are also wide spread.

Lillian showed the club a video about the study involving the school children. The classrooms were open and there was not even enough space under the roof for all the children and not enough desks and seating.

Those outdoors had to sit on the ground. All the children tend to be undernourished and

small for their age because the area of the study was poor. 136 children were needed and were divided into 4 groups: one to receive iron, one vitamin A, one both and the control group to receive a placebo. A baseline was set up by recording haemoglobin and anaemia levels, (those with very low anaemia were rejected).

Weight, height, general physical and eye condition were checked, memory and attention span were tested by written and oral tests, and all were recorded. During the study the children were all given some extra food mid morning to alleviate short term hunger which impairs short term memory.

After 12 weeks, checking against the baseline showed marked improvement in anaemia and weight gain. The conclusion was that long term improvement of general health could be affected by supplementing with vitamin A and iron and helped by poverty reduction.

Our members were very interested in Lillian’s talk and video and she enjoyed lunch with some of us. She had not been to this area before and was taken to see our beach and coast, before returning to Adelaide with a lasting memory or our beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula.

or those in small business who have just bought a new computer, you will have been offered the option of buying the latest version of Microsoft Office for a few hundred dollars upward depending on what programs you need. For anyone using existing systems, some of those old copies of Office or Works are probably showing their age in features and compatibility. Others are using pirate copies ….shame shame !

Then there are many applications like Photoshop (editing photos) and Adobe Acrobat (creating pdfs) that cost a fortune even though you will only use them every blue moon. However, there are alternatives in a range of free late model substitutes available.

The Test

We were to travel to TAFE that morning To mind baby Justin lee I arose with the sun’s pink dawning And laid out clothes for Paul and for me

The toaster gets redder and hotter As I throw in the organic eggs My tummy is rumbling a lot now As my wake up calls become begs

Now instead of complaining and winging I decided to learn how to sing No matter how late or how much howling I won't let him spoil everything

The cat began crying and howling ‘Feed me’ was his main request As I put Paul’s clothes on the dowling In the dryer for warmth on his legs

I’m starting to feel agitated As I’m getting nowhere real fast If he’s not up by eight at the latest Tanya’s typing test time will have past

So I started to sing in the shower I felt pretty safe in there As my singing got louder and louder It was more than the poor boy could bear

Now I’ve tried being friendly all morning And I’ve even been scratching his back But that only got me a warning And a dose of verbal attack

His arousal was prompt and ungraceful As he jerked to his feet in his socks And staggered out side to the front porch To relieve himself on his new pot

Determined not to start screaming Or raising and straining my voice I take out my bells and begin chiming But this only makes him get worse

This only worsened his sourness As he came swinging and lurching for me But by now I was dry and well dressed And calmly drinking chi tea

I tried to get him up slowly and gently But I’m now at a complete utter loss He’s just laying there groaning and moaning Like he needs an electric prod

So he slumped on the couch in confusion And rolled over and fell on the floor Wearily rubbing contusions And beginning to swear even more

After all they do it to cattle When they refuse to move in the shute So by now I am feeling quite rattled And would love to just give him the boot

Get up now get dressed I sang to him And eat all that fried food from the shop It’s like singing in grease the musical Pardon the pun but again my attempt is a flop

He slept once again on the sofa He’s too scared to sleep in his bed And because he's becoming a lofa The room's always in a mess

And then I promised MacDonald’s But that only inspired him to jeer And so I had only one option And that was to promise him beer

As he lies there mumbling and dribbling He says go to shop and buy food So i come back with milkshake and villies But he's snoring and it does no good

The effect of this word was amazing He was suddenly up on his feet And though his thinking was hazy He demanded his clothes for the street

I set about hanging up laundry And neatly making my bed Gently prodding and nudging my son now Who’s so still he actually looks dead

I am very pleased to say that everything seems to be coming together and hopefully we can continue our yearly programme.

Our first meeting proved to be a worthwhile and pleasing session under the skilful and guiding hands of oil painter, Betty Mahoney. On April 6th, we will welcome a new tutor to our group, water colourist and acrylic painter, Wendy Jennings.

May I take this opportunity to remind everyone that the Easter Art Exhibition is just around the corner and I would encourage all members to enter as many paintings as possible. This Exhibition has proved to be a show case for our area and is always well attended during the Easter week-end. Put my jeans in the dryer and warm them But I’ve done that already I said They’ve been in there for hours and hours Your socks and your shirt and the rest He went to the bathroom quite slowly And turned on the water spray jet And stood under and let water flow over Himself while he went back to sleep As time slipped away further and further I banged on the bathroom door Beginning now to sing like blue murder As he snored on the shower floor My only retort was to freeze him So I turned on the hot water taps Around the house and the kitchen Knowing he'd really feel that The scream could be heard all over The house and worse even outside as well As he bolted out shivering all over In a temper really most foul As he ran for the clothes in the dryer

Hastily putting on jeans dry and warm I already planned my next move here "You can back the car out the drive" came forth So he just grabbed the keys that were hanging In the kitchen upon the blue hook And then jumped in the car in the garage And revved her up well and good He let out the clutch very quickly And sped out backwards real fast Without opening the gates or thinking He flew past and tipped me right on my arse As I get up on my feet to assist him Being an ambulance officer and all He plants his foot back on the pedal And I go down for another fall

As I sat there nursing my bruises With all other strategies gone I promised him a carton of coopers And in one minute flat we were gone So the journey to TAFE went quite slickly It was all downhill from there on All Tanya had to do was type quickly And then we could have lunch and be gone So we walked up and down the east building Finding the office of business admin.

But were gaily informed test was last week We will ring you next year try again!!!!!!!

Now as we sat drowning our sorrows In cappucino, coke and chi tea The girl in the office called our mobile And said test in on come in promptly

Get out I scream now and let me in The singing a thing of the past But he flies out into the wheely bin As the garbage truck lifts it real fast

The result of the test was a good one And I like to have happy endings and all But I’m still mystified by the morals Of when to sing or buy beer for Paul

So we sit here this glorious morning Aware we have little time left I give thanks for the beautiful dawning But wished I had gone back to bed

So whether you’ve given birth or adopting You’ll need an answer to this parenting tale Maybe the secret is not in the singing But it’s all in the coopers pale ale!!!!!!!

ello readers. Well , it’s been quite some time since the last police report. The above statistics represent the period covered. You will easily note that speed offenders far outnumber other offences listed. This reflects a greater number of people committing that particular offence, rather than any great focus of attention by us. You have perhaps noticed that we are giving the first bit of Willis Drive some attention (the 60kph area) of late.

Everybody has a different opinion about us giving that location the attention we currently are. Can I say, though, that the average speed of motorists we are issuing fines to is in the high 80’s to mid 90’s. We have issued fines to several motorists traveling well above 100kph in that particular location. I don’t believe we are being unreasonable. Four people have been issued with on-the-spot license disqualification for periods of 6 months because of the speed they were traveling at.

People dropping kids off at the Yankalilla Area School will be receiving some attention soon also. Specifically those people who insist on parking immediately next to the traffic lights and then doing a ‘U’ turn over the single continuous white line. This is an offence and has the potential to cause serious traffic problems.

Don’t be lazy; just drive that little bit further up the road and do the

‘U’ turn both legally, and more importantly, safely.

So far we have survived the fire danger season without any great dramas. As we near winter, however, people tend to become a little complacent and start to light fires which are still in breach of fire restrictions.

The fire danger season does not conclude until the 30th of April. The on the spot fine police can issue for an illegal fire is $310. Courts issue fines starting at $1,000.

FIREARMS We have recently conducted some firearms enquiries that were instigated by the Firearms Section in Adelaide.

As a result only one person was reported for firearms related offences. However, all of those people we spoke with had the potential of being reported for firearms offences. People need to be a little less complacent about their firearms – have them secured legally/safely, keep your firearms license up to date and do not be in possession of illegal firearms. A local person was reported for firearms offences some time ago and as a result received a $10,000 fine. Not a very good birthday present. So please, be careful with your firearms and keep your license up to date.

7/3 Patrol of Deep Creek Conservation Park re another missing person. Located at Pt. Elliot.

12/3 Commence sea search operations between Marina St. Vincent and Kangaroo Island.

Search terminated when vessel was located by aircraft.

Poor equipment standard and failing to adhere to stated intentions again gave rise to this potentially very expensive search being commenced.

13/3 Patrol search of Carrickalinga for male person intending to suicide. Not located.

Well those were the most interesting bits of news.

There was plenty of other activity however.

Tip of the day: Always remember this – if you get a fine for speeding it isn’t the fault of police. And if you think it’s just revenue raising then you should treat it as a voluntary tax you just paid.

SEALINK WINS SECOND AUSTRALIAN TOURISM AWARD

ealink won the Major Tour and Transport Operator category of the Australian Tourism Awards for its Australian ferry, tour and holiday packaging business to Kangaroo Island. The awards were announced in late February on the Gold Coast.

It is the second time it has won

an Australian Tourism award, having won the same category in 2000.

Judging for the Award took place before Sealink opened its new $2 million ferry terminal at Cape Jervis, which is helping to boost visitor numbers to Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Cape Jervis Community Club

fter a reasonably quiet January and February at the Club, special activities for the year ahead will begin soon.

A memorable event was Australia Day which brought an imaginative flag raising ceremony with the round Australian flag raised appropriately with fishing line and in an a t mo s p h er e o f r es p ec t a n d patriotism. A new flag also hangs from the flagpole at the Club.

The first pool competition for the year between the Community Club and the Cape Jervis Tavern was held on at the end of March. Regular

comp nights will follow, alternating the venue between the Club and Pub. Interested players contact the Pub or Club for further details.

Preparations are well underway for the Family Day on Easter Day, Sunday 16th April. Free activities will include a fish tossing competition, kite building and flying c o mp e t i t i o n ( ma t e r i a l s a n d instruction supplied), photographic competition From the Hill to the Sea (local artists are being asked to judge the photography), drawing/ painting competition for children of My Favourite Place, face painting

and camel rides. A sausage sizzle will be available and the bar will be open.

Other events planned for the year include a Euchre competition in May, a Barn dance during the June long weekend and Christmas in July.

Later in the year events will include a rock and roll night, a picnic day in October and a Melbourne Cup luncheon.

And don’t forget the dance floor is uncovered on the first Saturday of each month so bring along your dancing shoes and favourite music.

Finally, a collection of old photos of

the area is being created. These will be scanned into the computer and available for a display in the Club foyer and for other uses. If you have any old photos you are prepared to loan the Club please let us know.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday evening for a snack and get together and Saturday nights for an inexpensive, delicious meal from 6pm.

ur promised evening session on Lizards and Reptiles to be presented by Chris Daniels, Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide’s School of Earth & Environmental Sciences and Director of the Biocity Centre for Urban Habitats will be held on Friday April 21st. The session will begin at 5.30 pm with a free sausage sizzle and Chris’ presentation will begin at 6.00 pm. Chris has promised to bring some live exhibits and will be more than happy to answer questions on the habits of lizards and reptiles in our local area.

Findings of Fleurieu Peninsula 2005 Eagle Survey February 15, 2006

On February 15th Terry Dennis, Eagle Survey Coordinator for Birds SA, presented the findings of a survey he recently conducted of eagle nesting locations in our region. The project set out to determine the number and distribution of large eagles (White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Wedge-tailed Eagle) on the Fleurieu Peninsula during the 2005 breeding season. Terry had an excellent response to his call for information about eagles and found that people in the Fleurieu

rural community generally had a positive attitude toward eagles, particularly landowners lucky enough to have them nesting ‘in the gully up the back’. Thirty three people enjoyed a sausage sizzle prior to being entertained

by Terry as he shared his findings with us. Terry found that: only one occupied White-bellied SeaEagle territory was found over ~150km of coastline and the lower Murray River estuary areas, and despite an early breeding attempt no young were produced; in contrast, Wedge-tailed Eagle territories were found distributed throughout, with a total of 29 occupied territories identified; active nest sites averaged ~7 km apart and the average home territory was ~34 km2; most pairs had commenced egglaying/incubation by mid July and most young had left the nest (fledged) by late November; and productivity was determined for 22 territories, with 0.86 young being fledged per nest and only one of these managed to fledge two young.

Beef producers learn to manage margins

group of local beef producers are clear on how they can improve profit margins within their business after attending a marketing workshop in the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The day-long Marketing Performance workshop in Hindmarsh Valley last week was designed to help producers assess and improve the marketing performance, and therefore profitability, of their enterprise. It’s one of a handful of red meat marketing courses, offered

by Meat & Livestock Australia’s EDGEnetwork, which have become more popular among producers recently.

Solly lead producers through an exercise where they analysed the total, average and net returns for each market segment of a beef enterprise case study. Mr Solly also demonstrated the costly penalties that applied for not meeting market specifications. He said delivering compliant produce was one way producers could significantly improve their bottom line.

Producers at the marketing workshop were also guided through the new cost-of-production calculator, developed by Meat & Livestock Australia. Mr Solly said knowing the cost of production was central to establishing profit margins within an enterprise. He said most producers found it difficult to calculate cost of production, but the new calculator made the process very simple.

The group also had time to review benchmark data from a range of beef properties and analyse the costs, risks and benefits of various selling methods.

Victor Harbour beef producer Kathy Davis attended the workshop and said it had changed her perspective on marketing.

“I’ve learnt that it’s not just about making sure your product meets market requirements, it’s also about actively finding the right market to sell your product to,” she said.

Mrs Davis said she’d also learnt the importance of accurate record-keeping for calculating profit margins. She said it was critical to keep detailed, accurate data for each segment of your livestock enterprise rather than as a whole.

“This way you can calculate your profit margins for each sale-class of livestock and compare their performance. Only then can you make informed decisions about the management and marketing of your business,” Mrs Davis said.

Many producers at the Marketing Performance wor k s h op h a d r ec e n tl y c omp l e t e d EDGEnetwork’s pasture-based PROGRAZE course. Victor Harbour consultant Tim Prance, who facilitated the workshop, said the Marketing Performance workshop was a logical progression from PROGRAZE. “Producing a meat product from an efficient

pasture-based grazing system is important, but knowing how to market it is equally as important,” Mr Prance said.

The EDGEnetwork is a national training program that, through practical workshops and learning opportunities, helps farming families and businesses improve the skills and knowledge needed to manage their livestock enterprises more profitably and sustainably.

EDGEnetwork is an initiative of Meat & Livestock Australia and the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. More than 10,000 producers across Australia have taken part in an EDGEnetwork workshop since the program began more than five years ago.

YANKALILLA LION'S SHEEP DOG TRIALS

T

he 2nd Lion's Sheepdog Trial was held at the Yankalilla Show grounds on the 5th & 6th March 2006. Ninety-six entries were received coming from Victoria, South Australia's Riverland Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, South East, Mid North, and the Fleurieu Peninsula's entries were from, Victor Harbor, Strathalbyn, Milang, Mount Compass and local entries from Bill Pearce, Torrens Vale and Craig Crawford, Hay Flat. The event was over two days starting at 7.30 am and finishing at about 7 pm each evening.

The Open winner and runner up was Bill Trembath from Bute with Fairly Dave and Bumdale Ben. Bill and Fairly Dave was the only South Australian trialler who represented Australia in the 2005 Trans Tasman Cup held in New Zealand, and came home with the cup. Congratulations to the four triallers and their Border Collies who represented our country with great success.

The improvers final was won by John Gallpen from Cashmore Victoria with Glen Romian Susy and a close 2nd was Alien Mabon from Naracoorte with Allmore Queen.

Mike Deppeler from Condah Victoria, won the Novice section with Deppeler's Chips and John Gallpen was second with Glen Romian Susy. While the Encourage Final was won by

Two board paddlers, and 2 life savers aboard the IRB (Inflatable Rubber Boat), supported all those game enough to participate in less than ideal swimming conditions. Mick Shipard, Tara Smith, Todd Scheer, Ray Simms and Mark Rothwell all took turns to swim and assist.

Daniel Wilkinson said “Although it was a delightful sunny day the conditions were not necessarily ideal. Some of the biggest waves we have seen at ‘the heads’ hampered the beginning of the race. It took three attempts to get the IRB into the water.”

Todd Scheer, from the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club said “Half a kilometer into the swim, two dolphins swam directly underneath me. They were obviously guiding us all safely to the finish – but it was a little frightening at first as none of us were sure what they were. I was glad to see the dolphins leap out of the water right behind me.”

ark chapter 16 verse 17; ‘and these signs shall follow them that believe.…’.

The following story is an account of the miraculous healing power of God. Kelani - born 4/11/05, Adelaide, Australia At twenty three weeks gestation, Paul and I found out we were having a little baby boy but with this news came something we had never expected. Our unborn baby had some serious problems.

To begin with, we were told he had left atrial isomerism. Instead of the usual four chambers existing in the heart, our baby had just one single chamber meaning his blue and red blood was mixing. Some of the major arteries to his heart were missing or blocked and were also situated in the wrong places meaning without surgery, his heart would be of no use to him. At this time they also told us he may either have no or several non functioning spleens. If this was the case they believed healing after major open heart surgery could be compromised.

All of our little boy’s (who we named Kelani) organs were in the wrong place and his intestines were twisted meaning an essential gastrointestinal operation hours after birth and he had what was called an echogenic gut which indicated he was bleeding from his intestines. And last of all we were informed there was a one in two chance he was Downs Syndrome and a one in four chance he had another chromosomal abnormality which would mean he would die in the space of a year after birth once his body had slowly deteriorated.

Sitting in a little room with my husband and hearing this news from a man who was completely unaware of the healing powers of God, we got the distinct impression he was waiting for us to break down and lose it. As we were informed the chances of this all happening together were 1 in 5.8 million, we were thankful it had happened to someone who knew the Lord and to a child who was capable of miracles in his life. We were instructed that the best option was abortion which of course, we refused.

Both Paul and my parents have bought us up attending the Revival Fellowship and hence we have known the truth about God and seen his provisions from a very young age. We were taught that to enter the kingdom of God we needed to repent, be baptized by full immersion and receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. As we both got a little older, we realized we needed a personal relationship with God rather than one that involved our parents. We were encouraged to read our bibles and ask questions to confirm what we had been taught was in fact true and all answers we received always came directly from the bible.

At different stages in our lives Paul and I began to seek for the Holy Spirit and we both received it with the evidence of speaking in tongues and were baptized by full immersion. No one had to tell us we had received the Holy Spirit. We knew when a language we had never before learnt began to flow out of our mouths. That was when our personal relationship with God began. We now knew that we had the ability to pray to the Lord all on our own and that he would listen and answer accordingly. And we also knew that God existed not because someone had told us so but because we had the evidence in our very own lives.

On the way home, Paul and I felt a little numb. Sometimes when you know the Lord, you feel so sheltered from the storms that when it rains on you, you’re not quite sure what to do. We knew the Lord would never give us something we couldn’t handle and somehow we were both quietly confident with the Lord and each other, we could handle anything. We told friends and family and began to pray that very night.

Kelani’s case was being reviewed by specialists Australia wide the following day.

We received a phone call to say that they had found some things very uncharacteristic of either of the two chromosomal syndromes in our baby. The chances of him having either of these were less than that in any normal baby. It seemed our prayers were already working.

Bible Truth Expounded – know your Bible.

They will turn away their ears from the TRUTH and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:4 Handel’s Oratorio – “THE Messiah” In the current series of articles we are examining the Bible texts that George Frederick Handel selected to put to music. We are looking at the wonderful truths expressed in the selection of scriptures Handel made and as we stated many of them are in themselves challenges to much of Christian teaching today.

PART THE second The Jewish people were not satisfied with a meek and lowly Messiah. Their minds were filled with prophecies of the Old Testament that promised national greatness for Israel, when Jerusalem will be the Metropolis of the world and a divine law will proceed there from to all nations, filling the earth with peace and goodwill (Isaiah 2:2-4, 62:6-7; Psalm 87:3; Zechariah 8:3). They had ample scriptural testimony to support their anticipations and hopes, but they failed to appreciate the twofold mission of the Lord (1 Peter 1:11-12). They did not understand that the cross must come before the crown, that the Messiah must first appear as the Lamb of God for the sin of the world and afterwards take up his great power and reign. They expected a mighty military leader; they were disappointed to find a lowly Nazarene, a humble carpenter, proclaiming a doctrine of non-resistance to evil, calling upon men to submit to wrong and place their trust in God. He explained his mission to his disciples telling them that he had appeared to “put away sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Hebrews 9:26), that his first advent was not the time of glory promised by the prophets (Mark 9:31), that he must ascend into heaven to act as mediator to those who would approach God through him (John 14 :28), but that in due time he “will come again” (John 14:1-3) in order that he might fulfil the great and thrilling prophecies of glory.

The tragic and sorrowful experiences endured by the Lord in his suffering for sin 2000 years ago are told in some of the solos and choruses in the second part of the Oratorio: “He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” The lord possessed the nature common to all mankind; one that is in bondage to sin, and whose destiny is the grave. He had to conquer the former that he might snap the chains of the latter, for apart from a resurrection from the grave to life eternal upon the earth there is no hope for man; the doctrine of an immortal soul that finds its way to heaven after the death of the body, finds no support in the Bible.

The hope that is consistently set forth is in a resurrection from the grave to life eternal upon the earth at Christ’s coming. Matthew 5:5, Revelation 5:9-10, Psalm 37:9, 11, 22) Apart from this, as Paul so definitely states: “they which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished” (1 Corinthians 15:18). Christ’s mission was to open a way from sin and death for all who would accept him (Hebrews 2 :14; Revelation 1:18). To do that, he himself, submitted to its power: “He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon him” declares the chorus quoting the words of Isaiah 53.

Though man forsook him in the time of his humiliation, God did not. He received strength from on high to conquer. Sun 12th March saw a convoy of horses and members head off to Mt Barker where Mountain Pony Club hosted the annual Southern Zone Pentathlon.

There were five events - Running a 75m relay with a soft gravel skid turn; Swimming a 25m relay (with bottoms intact Trudie?);

Darts; Horseshoe Throw; and Handy Horse (a novelty riding event with tricky cups, bouncy tennis balls; watery twists and bends.

We took 4 teams. Two junior and two in the 'open'. They were…

'Boguns' - Elisha (Captain) and Renee Gallagher; Danya Button; Jamee Dobson; and Jess George, coming in 4th .

'The Fab 5 from Fleurieu Emily (Captain) and Tom StockHemple; Bella Fyfe; Carley Wenham and Kat Belle. Tom and Kat were asked to join the team at 0830 that morning. These guys came in 10th (out of 12 teams).

'Fleurieu 5' - Cindy Whittlesea (Captain); Carol Button; Trudie Dobson; and Tracy Wilson.

(Lucky counting was not an event).And our winners - 'A bit twisted'.

In the Handy Horse event the junior teams rode 'Muffy' and 'Thomas' and the Seniors rode 'Darkie' and 'Spike'. Thank-you to the Gallagher Family for the use of 'Spike' and 'Thomas' and for floating them to Mt Barker. Also thanks to Denise Dawson for the use of 'Darkie' and 'Muffy' and to Libby for floating them.

Everyone had a great day at this fun inter-club event and 'A Bit Twisted' bringing home the shield was a bonus. Thanks to Libb y for her boundless enthusiasm and encouragement organizing this event. A special thanks to Kat and Tom for participating at the last minute; Tom being a non-riding member; and to Sean - who supports his riding family and the club by participating in club activities.

Easter thoughts Questions about the crucifixion. here’s something about the death of Jesus that stirs us – particularly as we think about the injustice and barbarity of his crucifixion.

Thoughtful people ask, ‘Why did they kill Jesus?’ And a deeper question is: Why did Jesus die?

Why was Jesus killed? Why should the best person who ever lived be tortured and nailed to a cross? How could they hate Jesus like that?

The answer is that Jesus didn’t fit, and was committed to his claims. At his trial, Pilate, the Roman judge, said, ‘I find no fault in him.’ The Jews said, ‘We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.’ John 19:7 When Jesus claimed to be the Messiah and the Son of God it was not on as far as the Jews were concerned. But why wasn’t he ignored as a misguided fanatic?

What couldn’t be ignored were the miracles which strengthened his

divine claims. Blind people were given sight, lame people walked again and lepers were healed.

Jesus was killed because of who he said he was. Who, in their right mind, would be crucified for false claims? He was, indeed, ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Why did Jesus die? Why did Jesus walk into danger and go to Jerusalem when he knew death was certain?

The big thing about the death of Jesus is that it was voluntary. He said, ‘No one takes my life from me, I lay it down freely of my own will.’

John 10:18 ‘I am the good shepherd, he said, ‘the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.’

In his transfiguration Jesus demonstrated to his disciples that he was no ordinary person and that crucifixion was his choice. He was not a victim of circumstance.

His death was undeserved. A lot of questions are asked about the Bali nine and others who have been executed for drug trafficking. Do

they deserve life imprisonment - or death by firing squad? We all have levels of culpability, but, in the life of Jesus, there was none. He was the most perfect and pure person who ever lived.

He died for others. The mockers at the cross said, ‘He saved others but he cannot save himself.’ They came very close to the truth. It would have been more accurate to say, ‘He saved others but he would not save himself.

Prior to his crucifixion he said, ‘Greater love has no man than this; that a man lay down his life for his friends.’

Jesus, the Son of God, pure in nature and character, suffered and died for the foul and sinful. He died for our sins. He died for us. In a way that none of us can fully understand, Jesus paid our debt, took our place so that we might be forgiven and experience a life change and come to know God. The Bible says, ‘He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that

we might die to sins and live for righteousness.’ 1 Pet 2:24 We can truly live because Jesus died and rose for us.

ONE HUMP OR TWO?

W

hether one hump dromedary or two hump bactrian, they are both from the camel genre, which includes lamas and alpacas.

Dromedary is derived from the word ‘dromos’, Greek for ‘road’, and actually referred to the riding or racing camel, hence the ‘road’ bit, but dromedary now is the nationally accepted word for the one humped camel.

Probably, the first ever sight of a picture of camels, was right from religious teachings or Biblical instruction when we were made aware of the three wise men bearing their gifts and they travelled on camels. Apart from that recollection, not many had been seen, they certainly were not kept as pets where I lived.

From observations made by C T Madigan, an explorer of the Simpson Desert, he succinctly puts into words his actual experiences working with these unusual ‘ships of the desert’ (called this due to their movement of travelling with front and rear legs on one side together and then the opposite side following, alikened to the rolling motion of a ship) Madigan said in his remarks “at first they are queer, awkward, slow, hard to understand, stupid, smelly, unapproachable and unfriendly, horribly noisy with their awful groans at loading time, generally repulsive, and trying on the nerves of everyone in a hurry. Their pack-saddles always seem to be wretched affairs, continually coming to pieces and whole process of travelling by camel seems antiquated and exasperated. But when the temperature begins to pass 100 degrees F day after day, when the feed disappears and only dry brambles can be found, and finally when water and the possibility of water becoming nothing but a wild hope, then the camel comes into his own.

There he kneels, uncomplaining and unconcerned, a tower of strength and comfort, living on the fat of his hump and good for another 200 miles”.

Talking of the fat stored in their humps, and their access to this emergency food source when water is scarce, sometimes this fat is accessed so much that the hump actually starts to sag and flop. (similar to a balloon being pricked and losing its air.) When things are getting really drastic, the worst scenario is that the hump, now minus its holding fat, starts to slide down the camel’s side.

The groans that C T Madigan refers to when a camel is being loaded up, I have always thought, ‘the cruel buggers, take some of the load off,’ but I have seen the light so to speak, as one must compare a weightlifter and the noises he makes as he strives to lift, well, this is the equivalent in a camel’s world.

In finishing this educational lesson, it is great to know that the dromedary, the one humped camel is not on the world extinction list, as it is definitely thriving, including Australia, especially in the dry, desert areas. So from three camels that arrived in Melbourne in 1840, overlanded to Sydney and being the first camel trek ever, were the seeds sown so to speak of the heritage, history and settlement of remote areas largely assisted by these animals from the other side of the world.

Now we come to the bactrians, the two humped camel. They are on the decline being classed as an endangered species, only numbering 300 – 700 and located in the Gobi desert and considered a wild population.

The dromedary is said to be evolved from the Bactrian camel and, whilst the one hump animal is mostly found in the Arabian deserts, the two humped is an Asiatic one with long hair and shorter legs, and can outrace a horse over long distances.

If you have seen documentaries of the Mongolians, you will have noticed the yurts, tent like structures

these people live in, bacterian camel skins provide the covering.

The matter of the reliance on the fat stored in the hump of the dromedary and the collapse of the holding hump when fat storage reaches danger point, conjures up the picture of a poor bactrian with his humps drooping down his side in the same circumstances. Perhaps it is evenly matched, with one each side of his body.

There has been no record of bactrians in Australia, so hopefully, the numbers can be increased to enable this unique animal to be around for a long time.

In closing, a little bit of advice for the frequent camel traveller. Although, it is known that a camel can be stubborn and will totally ignore any instructions given, should you wish your camel to sit, be firm, assertive, look into its soft, doe like eyes, at the same time admiring its gorgeous, long eyelashes to die for, ignoring those horrible teeth that badly need orthodontist treatment and say “HOOSH!” This should bring the required response.

I saw a telly programme recently, and this camel gave a woman a full-on, open mouth, slobbering kiss on the lips, a sight I had nightmares about.

Enough said!

nstead of our usual monthly meeting in March, we decided we would like to go to Range Road Uniting Church Fellowship Garden Party. This was held on Thursday 2nd. March at Willow Creek . We were asked if we would like to give a hand setting up and manning stalls etc., to which we gladly agreed. It was a very hot day but the garden was beautiful and shaded by large eucalypts. We had a very pleasant afternoon with delicious refreshments provided. Joy Rowland read to us various interesting events that had taken place in the Fellowship since it began. Some of the Uniting Church members, whose names were mentioned, were at the Garden Party and were able to add their memories. Thank you to the Fellowship for a lovely afternoon.

Dental Disease

T

he teeth of dogs and cats are prone to getting dirty as quickly as ours. We brush our teeth at least twice a day and have check ups at the dentist.

Cats and dogs age a lot faster than we do and if they don't get the right diet to clean their teeth they will get dental disease.

Periodontal disease is an inflammation of support structures for the tooth, such as the gums, cementum, periodontal ligament and jawbone. The hard outer layer of the tooth is the enamel.

Underneath that and making up most of the bulk of the tooth is dentin, which is similar to

enamel. Deeper to the dentin is a softer substance called cementum, which also covers the root of the tooth. In the core of the tooth is the pulp cavity, which is the sensitive area. Each tooth sits in a socket in the alveolar bone of the jaw and is held in place by a periodontal ligament as well as the adjacent cementum. They keep the tooth in place but allow a very slight movement of the tooth. The enamel can get worn away (seen in dogs that chew on stones) exposing the dentin on the grinding surface. The nerve of the tooth does not usually get exposed, because there is a proliferation of secondary dentin that back-fills the pulp cavity. layer made up of a mucous substance, cells from the lining of the mouth and bacteria. It starts forming on clean teeth within hours after eating.

Normally the plaque would be removed from the teeth when the animal eats a raw bone or chews through a chunk of meat.

If the plaque remains on the teeth, mineral salts combine with it and form a hard deposit called calculus or tartar. This hard crusty matter impinges on the gums and causes injury to them, which changes the acidity of the mouth and allows a proliferation of abnormal bacteria. These bacteria produce by-products, which erode the support structures of the tooth, eventually causing a wobbly tooth. Dental disease can be graded in severity. Grade 1 has mild inflammation of the gums, seen as a fine red line dividing the pinkness of the gums from the whiteness of the tooth.

Grade II dental disease will cause the gums to bleed when examined and there is swelling of the gum tissue. At grade 111 there is infection with pus evident. The tooth loses a quarter to half of its attachment due to bone loss- At grade IV the tooth is obviously wobbly and there is severe bone degradation with more than 50% of the tooth's attachment being lost. Any form of dental disease usually results in a smelly mouth. Dental disease is commonly seen in animals over the age of 2 years if they have been on a poor diet, but cats and dogs over the age of 6 months can be affected. Some of the toy breeds of dog are predisposed to developing dental disease because of crowded mouths.

Matter gets caught between the teeth and stays there and rots, creating a food source for bacteria. Dogs that groom themselves may get hair or fur jammed between their teeth.

Dogs and cats that have malformed jaws with an over bite or under bite will have some teeth that do not meet in a proper bite so they do not rub against each other when

chewing. Sometimes a dog will present with a swelling or a seeping wound below the eye in the cheek area. That is usually due to an abscess in the root of the big cheek tooth, which requires antibiotics, and removal of that tooth. Infections in the mouth can lead to infections elsewhere most commonly on the valves of the heart. Dentistry in dogs and cats i s d o n e u n d e r g e n er a l anaesthetic. The teeth are cleaned with an ultrasonic sealer and then polished and buffed.

Prevention is better than cure, so introduce the puppy or kitten to raw bones to clean the teeth naturally. They often start biting things when they are teething.

There are also dental treats available, but some are better than others. In the more mature animals dental care biscuits can help, some of which are also a fully balanced diet. Ask at the vet clinic what ones are recommended for an animal of your pet's age.

n update on the development of the “Men’s Shed” at Yankalilla Centre The “Men’s Shed” at ACH Yankalilla Centre was erected last year with the notion of offering a space for the male residents to gather, as well as to accommodate “workshop” type activities for the people who reside at the centre.

The shed has been in place now for a few months, and during that time ACH Yankalilla Centre have developed the grounds around the shed to make it more conducive to visitors and residents. Electricity has been connected, allowing for lights, actions and the installation of the all important bar fridge that had been donated by Brock Harcourts Real Estate.

The Lions Club has taken notice of this new venture and have been very generous in donating an outdoor setting and an umbrella. This addition has improved the use of the area allowing for more room to gather. A sincere thank you to the Lions Club for their support.

in the show .This was a great pleasure, being a Florist myself, I appreciated the beauty of all of the blooms and vegetables. I even got to bring home a champion flower and cucumber.

I had several people approach me after the talk to report bites and re-occurrences.

The Monday after I gave this talk, I received a call from one of the ladies that attended, to tell me her son had been bitten and was in a rather distressed state.

If you are member of a group and are looking for a speaker, I am available for Schools, and any clubs, I charge $50 which covers my petrol and photo copying of notes to hand out to interested people I have been in about 8 documentaries on Spider Bite, and these seem to air around the World, at different times, and just recently I received a call from England from a lady who

recognised the symptoms she was suffering from one of these doco’s. She was bitten in Darwin while on holiday there and thinking it was a mosquito bite flew home and it was then her wound got really bad and she found her Doctor had never seen anything like it, so she hunted on the internet and found me. She is very grateful for the help I was able to give.

Men at Work A volunteer with ACH “Friends Of Yankalilla Centre”, Philip Coulter, has recently devoted 2 mornings a week to spend time in the shed developing activities with the residents. He hopes that together, he and the residents can bring some life to the shed by collaboratively working on ideas to put the shed to good use.

Firstly it has been decided that the shed needs “things” – preferably “blokey things” to help create the right atmosphere. Philip approached Michael Aistrope at the Yankalilla Recycle Depot, who donated bits of wood and other handy resources.

Michael has also kindly agreed to keep his eye out for anything else appropriate, and we thank him for that.

ello readers. This month begins the first of a regular series. Over the last few months people have been asking about yoga. Where are there classes, and what types of yoga, and why are there different types of yoga? Actually one of my students wrote a little note, when she could not attend an informal meeting of students, and she made some valid points, including some of the ones I just mentioned. Of course this started me thinking, and I came up with the thought that it would be good to share information about this lovely practice. One of my dreams has always been to bring the different teachers together for a day of yoga, in the one venue, so that students may try the

different styles of yoga for themselves. So at the moment I am researching the possibility of running a one-day workshop in the area. Expressions of interest are most welcome, in fact, needed, so that I can gather the different teachers together. If you think that you would like to experience yoga for yourself, but have never tried, then this would be a perfect opportunity for you. Some of the reasons for people not experiencing yoga, are; they are not sure if it is suitable for their health condition; they think that they do not have time; some body has told them that it is too hard; they think that yoga is a religion or a cult and the most common comment they believe that they are not flexible enough to try.

NORMANVILLE SAILING CLUB COME SAILING WITH US

T

he sailing season is drawing to a close with the last club sailing day scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 16.

This season has seen an increase in club membership, with more boats competing in the different classes (single hulls and catamarans) and therefore more skill required from those intrepid yachts people who desire to win the weekly competitions. It has also been good to see a certain member back on the water again after his tangle with a power saw.

T here have been some interesting sailing days over the summer months with varying weather conditions posing challenges for all levels of sailors ranging from the experienced to the novice.

Autumn however is one of the best seasons, with typically mild to warm days and more stable wind patterns. It is therefore usually a good time for sailing and allows us to finish the season on a good note. Windy days are difficult of course and can result in sailing being cancelled, but often the greatest challenges occur when the winds are light

and highly variable as the boatie must be prepared to trim the boat for unexpected changes and all their skill is required to maximise speed in such conditions. Luck can be involved too, and if the boat is in the right place at the right time then the boatie may experience favourable conditions when no one else can.

Luck isn’t so important on the land afterwards, as members usually socialise after the sailing and often have barbeques. Members help others out with the setting up of boats and packing them up, as well as giving friendly advice and sailing tips, so it’s a good atmosphere to be involved with and a great opportunity to mingle with others. Remember, new members and visitors are always welcome and members are happy to arrange a trial sail if you are interested in joining.

This always makes me smile a little, after all, one of the main reasons to practice yoga is to become more flexible! Yoga is a wonderful way to improve your general health and well being, to improve your strength and stamina, and of course, to become more flexible. And I am tal ki n g ab o ut r e g ai ni n g flexibility in the spine. This is hugely important at any age, as all the messages that travel from the brain to the body, do so via the nerves that run along and through the spinal column.

There are many types of yoga being practiced in the area, and there will be one to suit every body. And of course, we save the best for last. The relaxation at the end of class. This makes it all worthwhile, as relaxation is deeply healing for the body and the mind. Perhaps you have tried yoga, once or twice, and did not think it was "your thing" like all new learning experiences, it takes more than and hour or two to learn the new skill, and perhaps it required a little more time or patience.

Perhaps you may have felt awkward at first, sitting on the mat, and yes it does take time to adjust to not sitting in a chair. I know my brother, who is very fit, was a bit frustrated the other day when I asked him to sit cross-legged on the floor. He found it quite difficult, only because he is not used to doing that. Once again, it is what we are used to, and it does take time to master any new skill.

The body also needs time to adjust to these new different requests! After a while,

however, new students begin to relax more, and to realise that it is not a competition, and that they have all the time they need, to learn, and that it is a very supportive environment, in which to learn. I would welcome any questions readers may have about yoga, and I am available to discuss any of your concerns. A yoga day excursion to have a class with a popular teacher is also planned in the near future. I always recommend to my students, that they go and try different teachers and styles, and find the teacher that they resonate with. I have a saying, in yoga. At first you drag your body along to yoga class, and then after a few weeks or months, your body drags you back to class! Human bodies love the benefits that yoga brings. I myself have helped myself back to health, after two serious car accidents, through the steady practice of yoga. So I know it works! And remember, it is never too late to start, so why not start today, and find a suitable yoga class.

very successful season has just come to an end and we have a Premiership to celebrate.

Congratulations to Division 3 Seniors on winning the trophy this year. Congratulations must also go to Division 3 Juniors who were runners-up this year after drawing their Grand Final and having to replay the match the next day. Division 4 Juniors also made it to the finals but lost their Semi Final, on the Sunday after drawing their

match on the Saturday. So it has been a stressful few weeks for some parents. The juniors have improved so much this year and we wish to thank all Division 3,4, 5 and 6 players and parents for their dedication and hard work. Thanks must go to all involved in the running of the Club, without you we wouldn't have one. Look forward to seeing you all next year.

e would like to thank the parents of Yankalilla Basketball for getting behind their children and supporting them by enabling the children to participate in the 2006 Junior Country Basketball Championships, March 11th, 12th & 13th at The Distinctive Homes Dome (home of the 36ers) Without you and your support there would not have been teams representing Yankalilla in Under 12 boys and Under 14 girls and boys.

The unity between the parents and children over the weekend was fantastic.

he South Australian Junior Country Championships were held in Adelaide over the weekend of the 11-13th March.

Yankalilla entered 3 teams into the competition and played at the Distinctive Homes Dome (That’s where the Adelaide 36ers play).

All 3 teams competed fairly and learnt from the experience. The under 12 boys team made the semi finals and went down fighting to Keith.

The association would specially like to thank the support from Dean Revill & Jason Hughes both of whom coached, Allan Hinks who travelled down to referee, Southern Fleurieu Realty for providing warm up tops for all the players. We would like to thank all the parents who supported the teams both at training and in Adelaide.

We are sure that the children got the most out of hearing the support from the parents.

YANKALILLA CHILDRENS COMMUNITY CENTRE

very big Kindy welcome to all our new children and their families who started in term 1. They are Mackenzie, Denver, Zayli, Kayla, Cain, John F, John M, Elijah, Brandon, Campbell, Olivia, Brianna, Erin, Orion, Esther, Jayden, Asees and Harmony.

We are also very lucky to have our amazing team of teaching staff back again, Cathy, Mary and Lucinda. The Kindy wouldn’t be the same without

you!! We have continued Letterland Programme this year.

Each week the children learn a different letter, followed by activities like show and tell, songs and art that represent that week’s letter. To celebrate ‘F’ week, the children had a fancy dress and food day, where they dressed up in something starting with ‘f’, like firemen and fairies. Then they feasted on fish fingers and fruit flummery.

As you can see by our photos, the children were very creative with their costumes! As part of the ARTSmart programme and the Adelaide Fringe Festival, we went to see “Dancing with the Diprotodons” at the Botanical Gardens. Then we went to the South Australian Museum, which provided the children

with a unique insight into the fantastic beasts which roamed the Australian continent and the habitat in which they lived. The children had an amazing time and a big thank you to all the parents who helped out that day.

With Easter fast approaching, look out for our Easter Raffle, as all the profits go straight to making this centre even more amazing for our kids! As you can see this term is proving to be yet another jam packed
